Mike “Flash” McVay welcomes a seasoned fighter pilot and Wild Weasel veteran to break down the evolution of the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses mission in the Viper community. From crafting airplanes out of bobby pins as a toddler to executing real-world SEAD missions over Baghdad, this guest's career spans decades of pivotal moments in combat aviation. Listeners will hear how a single incentive flight in an F-16 transformed a lifelong dream of flying Eagles into a passion for the Viper's multi-role capabilities. The guest shares his formative years at Nellis as a maintenance officer during the transition from F-4G to F-16CJ in the Weasel role, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at how the mission set developed. He discusses deployments supporting Operations Northern Watch and Southern Watch, including a gripping account of being in Turkey when 9/11 occurred and the following political complications. As the conversation shifts to Operation Iraqi Freedom, he recalls leading night SEAD sorties over Baghdad, vividly describing the chaos, coordination, and execution of real-time missions under fire.

EA-6B Pilot Matthew Maher and Electronic Countermeasures Officer Ethan Williams dive deep into the world of electronic warfare with a spotlight on the legendary EA-6B Prowler. In this episode, our guests take us back into the cockpit, explore the complex jamming systems that helped protect air and ground crews, landing on a pitching aircraft carrier, and multi-aircraft missions. We also answer several audience questions about the Prowler. After all, we do this all for you! This one is going to be cool!Key Takeaways:Our guests were inspired to join the Navy at a young age. Matthew grew up watching airshows and Space Shuttle launches and Ethan came from an Air Force family, but decided to attend the Naval Academy.Landing on an aircraft carrier is tough, especially in the Prowler. Matthew discusses the challenges of both day and night traps. The Prowler was one of the loudest airplanes on the deck, requiring dual ear protection.Maintainers worked day and night on the Prowlers, even replacing entire engines so the EA-6B could fly missions the next day.Ethan discusses the process it took to detonate IEDs in the Middle East remotely and how the Prowler's role changed over time.Matthew and Ethan tell us about the differences between the Prowler and the Growler and why the Growler is ultimately a better aircraft.Matthew has flown more than 22 aircraft during his career, and even flew the exact Prowler displayed in our Museum!Resources:Behind the Wings EA-6B Video with Ethan WilliamsNational Naval Aviation MuseumProwler WikiGrowler Wiki

In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, I'm Stewart Alsop, and my guest is Nathan Mintz, CEO and co-founder of CX2. We explore the fascinating world of defense technology, the evolution of electronic warfare, and how consumer tech is reshaping the battlefield. Nathan shares insights from his experiences, including his work with CX2, a company focused on building affordable, scalable electronic warfare systems for modern conflicts. We also touch on military tech's impact on broader societal trends and dive into the complexities of 21st-century warfare. You can find more about Nathan and CX2 at CX2.com. Nathan also writes on his Substack, Bow Theseus, which you can access via his LinkedIn.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:23 The Gundo vs. El Segundo Debate01:32 Tech Hubs in the US: San Francisco vs. LA02:41 Deep Tech and Hard Tech in Various Cities04:59 Military Tech: Software vs. Hardware09:54 The Rise of Consumer-Scale Warfare13:32 Nathan Mintz's Background and Career22:17 The Evolution of Military Strategies26:57 The Evolution of Air Combat Tactics28:29 Vietnam War's Impact on Military Strategy29:23 Asymmetric Warfare and Modern Conflicts31:43 Technological Advances in Warfare34:16 The Role of Drones in Modern Combat38:38 Future of Warfare: Man-Machine Teaming45:13 Electronic Warfare and CX2's Vision46:44 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsKey InsightsThe Rise of Consumer-Scale Warfare: Nathan Mintz discusses how warfare has reached a "consumer scale," with small, affordable, and widely available technologies like drones playing a massive role in modern conflicts. In Ukraine, for instance, inexpensive drones are regularly used to take out much larger, multi-million-dollar military assets. This shift shows how accessible tech is transforming the nature of warfare. The Importance of Spectrum Dominance: A central theme of the conversation is the increasing importance of controlling the electromagnetic spectrum in modern warfare. Mintz explains that the ability to maintain secure communications, disrupt enemy signals, and ensure the operation of autonomous systems is critical. As battlefields become more technologically complex, controlling the spectrum becomes as important as physical dominance.Hard Tech's Role in Military Innovation: Nathan highlights the growing importance of hard tech—physical hardware solutions like satellites, drones, and electronic warfare systems—in the defense industry, especially in regions like LA. While software has dominated in areas like San Francisco, LA has become a key hub for aerospace, space tech, and hard tech innovations, crucial for the future of defense technology.Dual-Use Technologies in Defense: A significant insight is the role of dual-use technologies, where products developed for consumer or commercial markets are adapted for military use. Technologies like drones, which have everyday applications, are being repurposed for the battlefield. This shift allows for more cost-effective, scalable solutions to military challenges, marking a departure from traditional defense industry practices. The Future of Manned-Unmanned Teaming: Nathan describes how the future of military operations will involve manned-unmanned teaming, where humans will act as "quarterbacks" managing a fleet of autonomous drones and systems. This strategy is designed to leverage the strengths of AI and automation while keeping humans in the loop to make critical decisions in contested or unpredictable environments.Electronic Warfare as a Key Battlefield Domain: One of Nathan's key points is that electronic warfare is becoming a primary battlefield domain. Modern warfare increasingly involves not just physical attacks but also the disruption of enemy communications, navigation, and targeting systems. This form of warfare can neutralize advanced technologies by jamming signals or launching cyber-attacks, making it a vital aspect of future conflicts.Innovation in Warfare through Startups: Nathan discusses how small defense tech startups like CX2 are becoming crucial to military innovation. These companies are building nimble, affordable solutions for modern challenges, contrasting with the traditional defense contractors that build massive, expensive systems. This shift allows for quicker development and deployment of technologies tailored to the changing face of warfare.

It's no secret that space is an increasingly contested domain. The U.S. didn't want it to be this way, but our adversaries chose that vector and now we must respond. Electronic warfare stands as the Space Force's leading offensive counterspace capability at the moment. It's also a means our adversaries possess and have used against us. This is a big deal given that space operations depend on cyber and the electromagnetic spectrum to connect the enterprise both within space and to downlink stations on earth. We explore these realities with two of the Space Force's top experts on the topic. Understanding the risks, capabilities, and limitations of space electronic warfare is crucial to inform the ongoing discussion regarding counterspace capabilities and the need to improve the U.S. space architecture's resilience. There are huge implications for cross-domain operations as well. Silicon Valley emerged from work in World War II led by Stanford professor Fred Terman developing microwave and electronics for Electronic Warfare systems. In the 1950's and 1960's, spurred on by Terman, Silicon Valley was selling microwave components and systems to the Defense Department, and the first fledging chip companies (Shockley, Fairchild, National, Rheem, Signetics…) were in their infancy. But there were no computer companies. Silicon Valley wouldn't have a computer company until 1966 when Hewlett Packard shipped the HP 2116 minicomputer.

Dmitri Alperovitch talks with Michael Kofman (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace), Rob Lee (Foreign Policy Research Institute) and Andrey Liscovich (UkraineDefenseFund.org) how the proliferation of FPV drones and countermeasures to them are changing the nature of warfare in Ukraine. They discuss: - Advantages and disadvantages of these new platforms - The development of new tactics and force structures employing them - The challenge Ukraine is having with developing and procuring munitions for drones - The cat-and-mouse battle in electronic warfare countermeasures used by both sides - Whether FPVs provide an advantage to defense or offense - The implications of drones on counterbattery and naval warfare - How Ukraine has emerged as a testing ground for these new technologies and the vital need for Western militaries to better absorb lessons learned from this conflict - How drones are becoming the cheap 'generic', albeit lesser capable, alternatives to expensive 'brand-name' weapon systems such as missiles, torpedoes, ISR platforms, etc. Andrey also discussed how his 501c(3) charity, UkraineDefenseFund.org, is helping train new Ukrainian FPV operators at the total cost of just $500 in 3 weeks.

Welcome to the seventy-third episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit Show! I am your host Mark Hasara, former KC-135 pilot and air war planner.   The US Air Force is replacing the EC-130H Compass Call with the Gulfstream G550 EA-37B, missioinized to perform the same electronic warfare missions and functions. This episode describes what some of those functions are and gives historical examples from air operations how electronic warfare dominated the battlefield... Israeli Air Force Operation Mole Cricket 19 and the Bekka Valley Turkey Shoot to the opening night of Operation Desert Storm and the takedown of Saddam's Integrated Air Defense System via PooBah's Party. This episode of the lessons from the Cockpit show is sponsored by the book Tanker Pilot, found in all four formats on Amazon: hardback, softback with black and white pictures, Kindle and Audible. The Kindle and Audile versions have an extra file with the thirty-two pictures which downloads with the book. Lessons from the Cockpit is also financially sponsored by Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. Go by www.wallpilot.com and chose from 138 very detailed Ready-to-Print aircraft profiles printed on vinyl in four, six, and eight foot long images you can peel off and stick to any flat surface. Wall Pilot can create custom profiles of your favorite aircraft with your name, tail number and weapons load on aircraft from World War II to Fifth Gen fighters. In the electronic warfare arena, if commander's want to hard kill an Surface-to-Air Missile site they send in the Lockheed Martin F-16CJ Wild Weasel. This Viper Weasel is named BOB, the 35th Fighter Wing's flagship aircraft. The Crew Chief used a grease pencil to fill in the left sides of the eights to create BOB as it's tail number! The 55th Reconnaissance Wing from Offutt Air Force Base is the home of two RC-135W Rivet Joint electronic intelligence collection squadrons. This RC-135W flies with the 343rd Reconnaissance Squadron and plays a critical role in the exploitation of the electronic battlefield. General Dynamic EF-111A Raven was employed throughout Operation Desert Storm to jam Iraqi air defense early warning and acquisition radar system. This EF-111A Spark Vark as crew's called it flew with the 390th Electronic Combat Squadron Wild Boars during Desert Storm. It was based out of Mountain Home Air Force Base Idaho before being retired in May 1998. On their last combat deployment before retiring the airframes to the Boneyard, the LTV A-7E Corsair II flying off the USS John F Kennedy were part of PooBah's Party in taking down Saddam's SAMs in and around the Baghdad area. This A-7E belonged to the VA-72 Blue Hawks Squadron Skipper, Commander JR "Shooter" Saunders. The A-7E is armed with AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles or HARMs. Thanks for taking the time to download and listen to this epidsode of the Lessons from the Cockpit Show! This week I'm extremely honored to have back on the show for a second time: MK Ultra survivor, targeted individual and technological mind control victim, voice for the voiceless, writer, and author of the book ”21st Century MK Ultra Slave: A Vintage Transhuman Tale”: Ron AlanA little bit about Ron if you missed his terrific 1st interview where he shared his testimony: Born in 1953 as the 4th son to a father who was a US Navy Pilot and early developer of radar, and a mother who was a ‘Grey Lady' for the American Red Cross, Ron's abuse and programming quite literally started at birth after he was given to the Valley Forge Army Hospital by his parents for 10 days immediately after he was born. Valley Forge Army Hospital was “coincidentally” used for the CIA's Project Bluebird (which precursed Project MK Ultra) and his hospital doctor, Dr. Beck, had many suspicious links including to the CIA, to Manchurian Candidates, as well as to the False Memory Syndrome Foundation - which he joined at its inception and continued being a board member throughout his life. Ron has been an MK Ultra experimental subject since birth - first by early CIA and US Army / Navy doctors and later joined by FBI COINTELPRO. Ron and his older brother, Gordon, were chosen for Project MK Ultra and it wasn't until 2005 when Ron's memories began flooding back at age 52 that he would be awakened to the hard reality of what he didn't know he was forced and programmed to forget.  The last time Ron was on, he shared parts of his incredible testimony from childhood ranging in memories from within the MK ULTRA projects he was subjected to, to the haunting death of his beloved brother, Gordon, to the threads of his family and people who he was associated with from birth that weave together to form the tapestry of Ron's complicated, painful and inspirational life story. What most people think is that when you ‘quote unquote LEAVE' these projects and systems that a survivor's life just returns back to normal and the torture and horrors stop, but for many survivors, this couldn't be further from the truth. Electronic warfare and technological mind control such as directed energy weapons (or DEWS) plague survivors for life and even as a survivor, they still remain a victim. Ron's incredible memoir, “21st Century MK Ultra Slave: A Vintage Transhuman Tale”, - which I encourage you ALL to get - outlines and details the life of an MK ULTRA child mind slave and the different methods of targeting that can - and often does - take place that make it almost impossible for a victim to even become a survivor as an adult. I wanted to give a reminder that if you are a survivor or whistleblower who wants to share your story on the podcast or wants to share any information privately with me, you can now email me at IMAGINEABETTERWORLD2020@GMAIL.COM! The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the twenty-eighth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guests are the cyberspace electromagnetic activities (CEMA) cell's officer-in-charge (OIC), for JRTC's Plans / Exercise Maneuver Control, MAJ Luke Plante (Zulu 88) and one of JRTC's opposing force's senior members of their information warfare cell for 1st Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry Regiment, CW2 Christian Lehr.   1-509th IN BN is the opposing forces unit for the Joint Readiness Training Center, the infamous “Geronimo.” The information warfare cell coordinates and executes the collection of tactical information, assurances that their information is valid, spreading of propaganda or disinformation to demoralize or manipulate the rotational training unit and the replicated civilian population, undermining the quality of the RTU's information, and denial of information-collection opportunities to the RTU as well as impede operations within the electromagnetic spectrum. Information warfare is closely linked to electronic warfare, psychological warfare, and cyberwarfare. EW is designed to deny the RTU the advantage of—and ensure friendly unimpeded access to—the EM spectrum. Psychological warfare that focuses on influencing the opinions, emotions, attitudes, and behavior of the RTU. Cyberwarfare attacks computers, software, and command & control systems of the RTU, multinational forces, and replicated civilian population.   Cyberspace electromagnetic activities (CEMA) is the process of planning, integrating, and synchronizing cyberspace operations and electromagnetic warfare in support of unified land operations (ADP 3-0). By integrating and synchronizing cyberspace operations and EW, the RTU gain an information advantage across multiple domains and lines of operations while disrupting the OPFOR's efforts across multiple domains. The CEMA Cell for P/EMC acts as the higher headquarters for the RTUs' CEMA elements and/or efforts.   In this episode we discuss how brigade combat teams prepare their battalions and companies for large scale combat operations across multiple domains through the employment CEMA and information warfare. Geronimo not only has the “home-field” advantage but also the competitive advantage of innovation by utilizing unique and tailored solutions using emerging technologies to answer various tactical problems encountered.   A reoccurring theme is the dismantling of the idea of a short-cut to unit cohesion and effectiveness. Instead, modern formations must focus on the fundamentals and being able to execute them violently across multiple domains. For staff's these means getting “sets & reps” of the going through the entirety of mission planning and execution.   Part of S11 “Conversations with the Enemy” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please checkout our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating.
