And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world.  John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath.  Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. Bob Daisley: The Unsung Hero of Rock and Roll For over five decades, bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley has been the powerhouse behind some of rock's most iconic recordings. From thunderous metal anthems to soulful blues and progressive ballads, Daisley's versatility and talent have made him a cornerstone in music history—working alongside legendary artists across the globe. Early Years: From Australia to the World Stage Born in Australia, Daisley moved to London at 21, chasing a future in music. On his 22nd birthday in 1972, he joined Stan Webb's band Chicken Shack. Just a year later, he signed on with Mungo Jerry, recording the hit single “Alright, Alright, Alright” and embarking on extensive international tours. Breaking Through: Widowmaker and Rainbow In 1974, Daisley rejoined Chicken Shack, but his creative ambitions led to co-founding Widowmaker in 1975. The band released two albums: Widowmaker (1976) and Too Late to Cry (1977), earning acclaim in the UK rock scene. Later that year, Daisley was tapped by guitar virtuoso Ritchie Blackmore to join Rainbow, alongside vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell—forming what many consider the band's definitive lineup. Their explosive live shows and the album Long Live Rock ‘n' Roll solidified Rainbow's place in rock history. Blizzard of Ozz: Defining a Genre In 1979, Daisley partnered with Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Randy Rhoads to form the Blizzard of Ozz. Their self-titled debut soared to #7 on the UK charts and went platinum in the U.S. They followed with Diary of a Madman (1981), which also achieved platinum status and further cemented the band's influence on heavy metal. Beyond the Blizzard: A Storied Career After a brief departure, Daisley returned to work with Osbourne on his third solo album. Tragedy struck in 1982 with Rhoads' untimely death, but the band pressed on, recording Bark at the Moon (1983) with new guitarist Jake E. Lee, earning international success. Daisley also joined Uriah Heep during this period and launched a prolific collaboration with guitar legend Gary Moore. He contributed to Victims of the Future and toured globally, later reuniting with Moore for Wild Frontier (1987) and Still Got the Blues (1990)—Moore's most successful album to date. 1990s & Beyond: Writing Hits, Shaping Legends Daisley returned once again to the Osbourne fold, co-writing and performing on No Rest for the Wicked (1988) and the chart-topping No More Tears (1991). That same decade, he formed Mother's Army with Jeff Watson of Night Ranger, releasing several albums showcasing his songwriting depth. Throughout the 2000s, he remained an in-demand collaborator, contributing to projects with Yngwie Malmsteen, Living Loud—a supergroup with Jimmy Barnes, Steve Morse, Don Airey, and Lee Kerslake—and revisiting classic Blizzard of Ozz material. Author and Legacy Builder In 2013, Daisley released his autobiography For Facts Sake, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at his life in rock. Though he has stepped back from touring, he remains a respected figure in the music industry, continuing to inspire through studio work and guest appearances. A Legacy Etched in Rock History Bob Daisley's basslines have underscored some of the most memorable moments in rock and metal. Whether writing, performing, or mentoring, his passion for music endures. With a legacy spanning continents and genres, Daisley remains a foundational figure in the world of rock and roll. #BobDaisley #RandyRhoads #OzzyOsbourne #JohnnyBeaneTV #RockLegends #BassGuitarIcon Want to create live streams like this? HEAVY Music Interviews
Paying Tribute To RANDY RHOADS Down Under With KELLY GARNI From QUIET RIOT

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersHe may have been taken from us far too soon, but the legacy and memory of guitar great Randy Rhoads will live forever. Rhoads' name is revered in the music world, where, for a period from the late 1970s through to the early 1980s, his playing and presence left a shadow of brilliance that is as strong today as it was back then. The virtuoso guitarist, who co-founded Quiet Riot and propelled Ozzy Osbourne's solo career with Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981), remains one of heavy metal's most important figures. Before his untimely death in 1982 at just 25, Rhoads redefined guitar-driven rock, blending classical influences with blistering metal to pioneer the neoclassical metal subgenre. His iconic riffs, featured in timeless songs such as Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, and innovative techniques, including two-handed tapping, vibrato bar dive bombs, and intricate scales, set a new standard for the 80s metal scene and inspired countless guitarists.Recognised with a 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Rhoads' legacy endures as a cornerstone of heavy metal evolution, with his signature Jackson Rhoads guitar symbolizing his revolutionary impact. To most of this current generation and beyond, the life and music of Randy Rhoads will always be that of past reflection, unable to bear witness to the great man on stage with precious little preserved on camera or film. But this December, thanks to XMusic, fans can get as close to the glory days of guitar as possible when A TRIBUTE TO RANDY RHOADS - The Stories and Music Behind the Legend - hits this country for a performance that includes live renditions of Rhoads' finest moments as well as an in-depth Q&A session. This is more than just a tribute performance, with Rhoads' long-time friend, confidant and co-founder of Quiet Riot, Kelly Garni, heading the evening alongside Rhoads' first-ever guitar teacher, Scott Shelley. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Randy Rhoads - a true guitar legend - whose influence still resonates in every power chord and soaring solo played today. HEAVY had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Garni ahead of the tour, and among the topics of conversation was the sheer magnitude of putting together and the need for a performance of this scale."I don't pursue these things," he stressed. "People come to me, and they ask me to do them. There's a very, very large fan base for Randy Rhoads, and pretty much I'm the last man standing (laughs). Of course, I don't have Kevin (Dubrow, vocalist), who I sure do miss. Although if you read my book, you wouldn't believe that in a million years, but boy do I miss him. He was a great, great guide for me, and I learned a real lot from Kevin. But anyway, I've been approached several times, and I've been all around the country over the last few years here in America, and now Japan twice. People want anything left of Randy, and I guess I'm what you get. It's an honour to represent my best friend. Of course, anybody would do that for their best friend, if they're any kind of a friend. And so, since people are so excited to hear that music again, I happily oblige and go and do these shows."Garni had many tales to tell, among them how Alice Cooper shaped much of what was to eventually become the sound of Quiet Riot, albeit without having ever met the two impressionable youths."When we saw Cooper, we said we're gonna be rock stars, whether anybody likes it or not," he smiled. "And you know, in my mind, Randy did, but I never really did. And I never really wanted to. And that's okay because things had changed over the years to where I didn't want to be in the music business any more, but because of my association with Randy, I find myself very heavily involved (laughs). And I gotta say, to see and meet all the fans who come to these shows is really, really something that makes you feel good in your heart and your soul."In the full interview, Kelly addressed the excitement among fans and the importance of celebrating Rhoads' legacy, highlighting the involvement of key figures from Randy's early career to enhance the authenticity of the tribute. He spoke about the rest of the band, including musicians from Snake Bite Whiskey and the Van Halen tribute band Van Hager, along with a Q&A session featuring Scott Shelley, Randy's first guitar teacher. We spoke about the Q&A session and the personal nature of the questions and how emotional it could get.Reflecting on his and Randy's musical journeys, Kelly shared insights into their early influences and the challenges they faced, including Randy's struggles with confidence and vocal abilities. He recounted the band's evolution, including a misguided image overhaul that led them to adopt a look that felt disconnected from their original sound. We also spoke about important moments of Randy's life and the impression he left on others, including Kelly, the ever-lasting legacy left behind by his untimely death and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Hair Metal: The Soundtrack of Suburban Rebellion The term "hair metal" is often loaded with contradictory emotions. For some, it carries a pejorative tone, evoking images of overproduced, superficial music that prioritized style over substance. For others, it symbolizes a golden era of hedonism and carefree excess—a nostalgic portal to the cultural climate of the 1980s. Whether you're a Gen X'er reliving the glory years of 1981-1987 or a Gen Z'er discovering the era's flamboyant spectacle for the first time, hair metal offers an intriguing entry into a bygone cultural zeitgeist. Origins and Influences: A Hybrid of Excess Hair metal is best understood as an amalgamation of diverse influences: the shock rock theatrics of Alice Cooper and KISS, the virtuosic intensity of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), and the pop hooks reminiscent of 70s classic rock. The genre's genesis can be traced to Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, amid the decline of hardcore punk and new wave. Unlike the disaffected rebellion of punk or the cerebral stylings of new wave, hair metal embraced a more commercial, hedonistic ethos that resonated with suburban youth. Key Players and Early Success Van Halen's meteoric rise in the late 70s, driven by Eddie Van Halen's guitar innovation and David Lee Roth's charismatic theatrics, laid much of the groundwork. Yet, it was Quiet Riot that first achieved mainstream success with 1983's Metal Health, the first metal album to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. Their cover of Slade's “Cum on Feel the Noize” exemplified the blend of hard rock bombast and pop sensibility that defined the genre. Simultaneously, Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz (1980) featuring Randy Rhoads, redefined what metal could be—dark and heavy, but also catchy and accessible. This formula of blending metal's aggression with pop hooks became the template for hair metal's commercial domination. The Cultural Politics of Hair Metal Unlike punk's overt challenge to conservative politics, hair metal offered rebellion as a commodified spectacle. It was less about collective resistance to authority and more about personal indulgence. The Reagan and Thatcher years saw the rise of neoliberal individualism, and hair metal became the soundtrack to this ethos: drugs, sex, and flashy excess. Bands like Mötley Crüe, with albums such as Shout at the Devil (1983), exemplified this aesthetic, blending occult imagery with glam decadence. However, by the late 80s, the genre began to cannibalize itself. Bands influenced by early hair metal—such as Poison—were producing sanitized versions of the form. By 1988, hair metal had become a bloated commercial enterprise. Simultaneously, the rise of bands like Guns N' Roses and Faster Pussycat, who rejected the cartoonish glam aesthetic, signaled a shift. Mötley Crüe's 1987 album Girls, Girls, Girls symbolized this transition—gone were the lace and makeup, replaced by leather and a grittier image. The Decline: From Cultural Dominance to Nostalgia The genre's decline was swift, for many hastened by the rise of grunge and alternative rock in the early 90s. While I don't discount the raw authenticity of bands like Nirvana, and how it  stood in stark contrast to the excesses of hair metal; By 1987 most of the “hair metal” songs were pop music with distorted guitars. Def Leppard's 1983 Pyromania was to be their “Thriller”. This was less an authentic genre, and more a media moniker, and everyone with a Marshall stack and hair spray wanted to use that moniker to get in the business.  By the early 90s, the genre was relegated to nostalgia tours and retro compilations, a relic of a pre-grunge world. Make no mistake: these albums kick ass. But, like anything involving the Prince of Darkness, there's more to the story than meets the eye. Sure, these records gave us unforgettable tracks like “Crazy Train” and “Over the Mountain,” but behind the scenes, things were a total circus. After recording Diary of a Madman, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake were kicked out of the band, setting off a firestorm of lawsuits for royalties. And just when you thought things couldn't get any wilder, Sharon Osbourne decided to go back years later and had their parts re-recorded by different musicians — all without really telling anyone. November 18, 1983 Put your '83 hat on and travel back to the days of yore when OZZY OSBOURNE was still a relatively new solo artist struggling to bounce back after enduring the tragic and untimely demise of guitarist Randy Rhoads following The Ozzman's first 2 legendary albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman.   Enter Jake E. Lee, Rhoads' successor, and the debut of his shred skills on Ozzy's 3rd studio release, BARK AT THE MOON. While perhaps a departure from those first 2 records with Rhoads, BARK AT THE MOON has a more keyboard centric, pop-oriented sound that left some fans confused, yet it was just another example of OZZY rising from the ashes like a phoenix and reinventing himself once again. Always remember to never write a song in the “afterglow” that you'll ultimately grow “So Tired” of. “Slow Down” before being aurally assaulted by some overly emphatic keyboards because it's time to get “laminated” and take “One Up The B-Side” after you “wash the evil off”.  Find out what happens when you get “plastic surgery to look older”, embrace your “Olde Faece”, summon up your playlist of farts, and brace for the onslaught of our upcoming OnlyFans cooking page when you JOIN US as we dive into the “Centre of Eternity” that is BARK AT THE MOON.   OZZY on the InterWebs: https://www.ozzy.com/   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. Well, if you've ever seen a Season 1 SVU, you'll know that the show worked a little differently back then. If you see this episode from Season 1, you'll gain entrance to a world where things are fully upside down. Here we see tan lines in wildly improbably places, sex-positive waitstaff, disgraced pedophiles who blossom as well-intentioned tailors, train-obsessed teens, and, quite possibly, a travel writer with an unspeakably bizarre kink. As if that's not enough weird, we Munchers go even further off script and dive deep into tainted muskrats, Le Corbu furniture, impossible addresses, and the origins of the Garifuna people. Yeah, we go hard in this one people.
