Why You're Still Doing Everything – Even Though You've Hired a Team

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2025 17:53

Hello and welcome to Episode 268 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In this weeks episode I'm chatting about why you might still find yourself doing everything – even though you've hired a team.We start by looking at the common misconception we have that more people will immediately reduce our workload. In fact the opposite can be true. More people can often mean more work when we haven't hired the right people, for the right roles, and created the right structure. The key to having a business that delivers success and freedom to you, the business owner, is the right team (not just any team) and this includes the right team structure. When we get that wrong – we end up building a team which has a dependency issue – a dependency on us. And this can sometimes be exacerbated when we are a natural control freak. In truth, the real issue might just be us – not because we are intentionally sabotaging things, because this is new, this we need to learn, we are often modelling off poor examples, or big business – and it doesn't work.We need to learn to lead our teams, we need to learn how to be a boss. How we show up to lead our people is everything – but so often we are flying blind – because there isn't a playbook. So instead, we avoid structure and clarity because we think people want autonomy – and they do! But it's a balance, our people also want to know what's expected of them. The consequences of these patterns going unchecked, when your team are dependent on you - you become the bottleneck: and that leads to a negative impact on business growth, personal burnout, and poor team morale. It leads your team to feel micromanaged, and that stifles creativity, innovation, initiative – they end up being less autonomous, less productive and less willing to be solutions focused. So what's the solution? It's time to level up as a boss and leader. Create structure, provide clarity, become the ‘boss' that your team want you to be.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? The Power of Owning the Problem

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2025 15:01

Hello and welcome to Episode 267 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today I am sharing a conversation I had with Juliet Robinson over on our Grow Your Influence podcast about the power of owning the problem as a leader in our business. We've all had that feeling when someone behaves badly: maybe if I just leave it, they will sort themselves out/the problem will just go away…Juliet and I talk about an example of a client who knew they needed to deal with a toxic person in their team but had been avoiding the issue. As soon as they decided to deal with the person, they felt so much better about themselves. The team's morale was almost instantly improved and the manager gained so much confidence from realising their response didn't need to be perfect, they just needed to need to do it.We talk about the importance of leaders being aware of boundaries, both personally and within the team, and tackling issues directly when people are pushing those boundaries. As managers we can feel overwhelmed when someone on our team is behaving badly and their negativity starts to infect the team. It can be tempting to hope that they will realise they are being unreasonable and start behaving better. The reality we talk about in this episode is that our team is watching to see how we deal with these things and whatever we do gives them signals about what's ok. We will also feel better about ourselves when we deal the situation. If you find yourself in this situation, remember you just need to take small steps. Plan a first conversations and be clear about what you want to change. It is your role as a leader to deal with difficult people, both within and beyond your team, and you will feel better when you do this.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? The 80-20 Rule and Your Team

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 17:19

Hello and welcome to Episode 266 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In this episode we are talking about the 80/20 rule and how it applies to your team. There are two sides to this coin.Firstly, are 20% of your people responsible for 80% of results in your business? Look around your team, who are you high performers? Who drive things forward? What would happen if they weren't there? As your teams grow, you may find yourself here – where a small portion of your team are responsible for a lions share of results. They might not the doing all the things, but without them things will fall apart. I want you to check in, are these people getting your time, attention and recognition?Conversely, are 20% of your team taking up 80% of your time? The other way this shows up is in the opposite, where the bottom 20% are ‘problem children' and they are taking up 80% of your time. You're constantly training, mentoring, coaching, performance managing and course correcting. It's exhausting right? So how can you adjust if you have one or both of these imbalances? That's exactly what we're chatting about in this episode. An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? Hello and welcome to Episode 265 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In this weeks episode we are chatting about the Federal Governments recent Budget announcement around their plan to ban non-compete clauses in employment contracts.Today we will break down what non-compete clauses actually are and what they do, what is the Government saying they plan to do and what this means for your business.Put simply, non-compete clauses are clauses in employment contracts that prevent an employee from working in competition with the employer after they leave. Also referred to as non-poach or restraint of trade agreements, they are largely designed, or at least in part to protect an organisations Intellectual Property and aim to protect the livelihood of the business. The Federal Government recently announced their plans to ban these clauses from sometime in 2027. They have suggested the ban will employ to employees who earn under the high income threshold, currently $175 000.So what does it mean? In reality these clauses have always been legally difficult to uphold legally – I learnt this the hard way. For now, no need to panic, but sure up your relationships with clients, do great work and remembers this is not definite yet.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? The 1 Role That Can Change Everything

Hello and welcome to Episode 264 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today I have a question for you: What if I told you that your business could completely change with just ONE key hire?So often I see business owners feel stuck in the day-to-day grind instead of leading. They're answering every question, fixing every problem, putting out fires. They think hiring more people will fix it, but somehow, they're still overwhelmed. If this is you, the truth is there is a missing piece on your team. You've got growing pains, you know that, but you don't know who to hire to solve it.You could duplicate a role, and add another member to a key team, and that might stop the bottleneck there and let you service more customers. You could create a role, and add skills to your team to improve your customer experience and reduce the need to outsource. But neither of those solutions solve the key problem: they won't stop you being overwhelmed, spending 10 hours + per week managing people and stuck in the weeds. The role that will stop that is simple: it's a buffer role.In this episode I talk through the different types of buffer roles and which to consider when.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? Hiring well takes time, knowledge and energy.Failing to Reference and Background Check Effectively – quality reference checking processes remain the most effective way to assess a candidates work history, but few people do them effectively. These are certainly not the only hiring mistakes, but they are three of the most common, and as you can see they are all easy to avoid. An InvitationAs always, I'd love you to join us inside our free Facebook Group, HR Support for Australian Businesses, so I can learn more about what's working for you and any challenges you might be having. Today I am sharing my top predictions for your team for 2025.My 5 top team predictions are:Job mobility will be on the rise: for a range of reasons, I believe we are heading into a season where more employees will be looking to change employers – this may be good news for you if recruitment has been tough for the last couple of years.Increase in the use of AI and associated technology: we're already seeing job applicants actively using AI in their application process – so your hiring skills really need to be on point right now. But on the flip side, how can your team leverage these tools to help them at work? The right to disconnect implementation will be closely watched by your team. If you haven't yet put any thought into the practical implementation of this new legislation now is the time.Focus on wellbeing at work will increase, and I expect this will ultimately become a non negotiable expectation of employees.Employee expectations will continue to increase. People are no longer looking for ‘just a job' – they want to feel part of something bigger, like they are contributing and adding value, that they are valued. They want to work for purpose and values led businesses – and they will move if their expectations aren't being met.So, what about you? What are your team predictions for 2025? Is It Really a Redundancy?

Hello, and welcome to Episode 244 of the People Powered Business Podcast! Can you believe it's already November? The year is flying by, and here we are with another important topic for business owners just like you.In today's episode, we're diving into an area that's critical but often misunderstood: redundancies.Recently, I've been hearing about a surge in redundancies, especially in business groups, networks, and conversations with peers. But the big question is – are all of these redundancies legitimate, or are they sometimes being used as a workaround for performance issues that should have been managed differently? In this episode we explore why it's so essential to get this right and discuss the real reasons for this trend.Inside our People Powered HR community, each month we focus on a specific theme from The P.E.O.P.L.E Pathway. October's focus was on ‘Exit' – a challenging but necessary part of business and people management. The reality is that people will exit our business, whether we choose to exit them or they resign. If we need to exit someone from our business, a redundancy may well be a valid way to do this, but we need to understand when and how they should be used. So today, I'll share three key insights to help you navigate redundancy in a way that's both compliant and compassionate. In This Episode: What is a Redundancy and When is it Genuine?Redundancy is not as simple as many think. According to the Fair Work guidelines, redundancy is genuine when an employer no longer needs a role to be performed by anyone – not just one person – due to reasons like new technology, restructuring, or closing of operations. But here's the critical part: redundancy cannot be used as a substitute for poor performance management. Following the correct consultation process, especially if employees are covered under awards, is a requirement to avoid the risk of unfair dismissal claims. The Difference Between Redundancy and Performance ManagementI've observed that some employers, especially during slower business periods, may attempt to label dismissals as redundancies. Often, this is because performance issues were allowed to continue unchecked, making redundancy seem like a convenient solution. However, if not managed properly, this can lead to costly repercussions, including redundancy pay in small businesses or even an unfair dismissal claim. It's essential to distinguish between a genuine redundancy and cases where performance management should be applied.Top Tips for Exiting a Staff Member with Integrity and CareExits are never easy, but there are ways to make the process smoother for all involved. First, get comfortable having difficult conversations, and address performance concerns early. Use the probationary period to its fullest extent, keeping minimum employment standards in mind. Practise compassion and approach every exit with honesty and facts, avoiding emotional responses. And finally, don't be afraid to get help – navigating exits properly can protect your business and uphold dignity for all parties. As always, I'd love you to join us inside our free Facebook Group, HR Support for Australian Businesses, so I can learn more about what's working for you and any challenges you might be having. Workplace Flexibility: A Must-Have for Retaining Top Talent

Hello, and welcome to Episode 243 of The People Powered Business Podcast! In today's episode, we're exploring a topic that is no longer just a ‘nice-to-have' for organisations but an absolute necessity—workplace flexibility. We've touched on some of the legalities and frameworks before, but today, we're going to dive deeper into why flexibility is a critical component of retaining top talent. What We'll CoverLast week, we revisited the foundations of workplace relations laws, including the National Employment Standards (NES), and one of the cornerstones of these laws is the right to request workplace flexibility. Interestingly, in our Facebook Group, a recent discussion around a redundancy situation brought up some really important questions around flexible working. So, today we'll address key aspects of workplace flexibility, including:Understanding the legal side of flexibility – what the NES says about requests for flexible work. Why flexibility is so important to employees – it's more than just a perk, it's an expectation. The business case for flexibility – why offering it is essential for attracting and retaining talent, improving morale, and boosting productivity. What Does Flexibility Mean Under the NES?Under the National Employment Standards, certain employees, like parents or caregivers, have the legal right to request flexible working arrangements. This can involve changes to working hours, work patterns, or even the location of work (e.g., working from home).Eligible employees need to have been with the employer for at least 12 months, and these requests must be related to specific circumstances such as being a parent of school-aged children or younger, being a carer, living with a disability, being 55 or older, being pregnant, or supporting someone experiencing family or domestic violence. There are clear guidelines around how these requests should be made and how employers are required to respond. Why Flexibility is Vital to EmployeesFlexible working arrangements are no longer seen as a luxury; for many employees, they're a dealbreaker. According to a recent HRM article, 78% of employees won't consider working for a company that doesn't have a formalised flexibility policy. In fact, almost half of the candidates surveyed said they've declined job offers due to a lack of flexibility. This shift in employee expectations highlights how crucial it is for businesses to adapt. Flexibility isn't just about working from home; it can encompass working hours, patterns, and arrangements that cater to individual needs. The Business Case for FlexibilityIf you're looking to attract and retain top talent, offering flexibility is a must. It's not just about ticking a box – it has real, tangible benefits for businesses:Improved employee engagement: 61% of employees report feeling more engaged at work when they have flexible arrangements in place.Increased productivity: When employees can work in ways that suit their personal lives, productivity often gets a boost.Better morale: Flexible work has been shown to reduce stress, burnout, and absenteeism, which creates a more positive work environment.Cost savings: From lower office costs to fewer lost workdays, businesses that offer flexibility often see financial benefits. There's also the principle of reciprocity, as highlighted by Robert Cialdini in his work on persuasion. When businesses offer flexibility, employees tend to respond with increased loyalty and effort, creating a win-win for both parties.Beyond Location: Thinking Creatively About FlexibilityWhen we think about flexibility, it's easy to focus only on working from home. But flexibility can take many forms. It could mean adjusting hours or work...

Hello and welcome to Episode 218 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today I'm posing the question: non-compete clauses in employment contracts – are they worth the paper they are written on?These are those clauses, often worded in really complex terms, that aim to prevent an employee from working with a competitor, setting up in competition, or taking customers with them when they leave. They are complex and complicated, and not all that easy to actually uphold, I know as I have first hand experience! So when should you use them, and what are the things to consider if you're planning to include them in your employment contracts? An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team?
