Sharks and rays are vital to marine ecosystems, but their populations are dwindling rapidly. Conservation efforts face challenges due to the lack of detailed data on their critical habitats, but in a bid to map these areas, a groundbreaking atlas has been created, drawing from the collaborative efforts of divers, fishers, and scientists. We explore more about Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) - regions identified as critical for the conservation of shark and ray species based on scientific criteria. Helping us do that are scientists Serena Adam (Marine Conservation Officer, WWF-Malaysia, member of the IUCN) and Assoc. Prof. Dr Amy Then (Senior Lecturer, Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Malaya), and also environmental journalist and co-founder of Macaranga, Wong Siew Lyn, who just released an article on this, titled: Divers, Fishers and Scientists Map Sharks and Rays to Save Them. The article also has an accompanying interactive map of Malaysia's new 10 Important Shark and Ray Areas.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For a transcript, please visit the episode page on ClimateBreak.orgWhat is a Prescribed Burn?Prescribed burns “reduc[e] excessive amounts of brush, shrubs, and trees, encouraging the new growth of native vegetation, and maintaining the many plant and animal species whose habitats depend on periodic fire,” according to Smokey Bear. Prescribed burns are conducted by intentionally igniting a fire on a day with very little to no wind in the forecast, in an area with abundant dry brush that was not recently burned. Fire is a natural part of California's ecosystems. Prescribed burning mimics natural processes by reducing kindling and other fuel on forest floors, which in turn reduces the likelihood that massive and deadly wildfires will occur. The History of Prescribed BurnsFor thousands of years, Native tribes around the world have practiced cultural burning, otherwise known as prescribed burning. Cultural burning is “the intentional lighting of smaller, controlled fires to provide a desired cultural service, such as promoting the health of vegetation and animals that provide food, clothing, ceremonial items and more,” according to journalist Dave Roos.Roos notes that Spanish colonizers not only brought disease and violence to America, but a prohibition on cultural burning practices: “one of the first official proclamations by a Spanish bureaucrat in California in 1793 was to outlaw ‘Indian burning,' which was viewed as a threat to the Spanish cattle herds and pastures.”  According to The Guardian, the US government passed the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians in 1850, which outlawed practices of cultural, prescribed, or intentional burning before California was even a state. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wildfires increased in size and intensity. Roos writes that “Millions of acres were destroyed by a series of deadly wildfires, many caused by sparks thrown from the new transcontinental railroad.”Fire suppression can lead to a buildup of ‘fuel' in forest landscapes, including fallen trees and drought-ridden undergrowth that help wildfires start and spread. Frequently controlled burning reduces this accumulated fuel and in turn reduces the intensity and severity of wildfires. The Controversy around Prescribed BurnsThe practice of prescribed burning is not without controversy. According to Bryant Baker, Conservation Director for ForestWatch, controlled burns could inadvertently exacerbate the problem they are trying to solve by killing native plants and causing the proliferation of invasive, early-drying grasses with low ignition points. Baker argues that this cycle could actually increase fire risk: “The spread of invasive grasses is increasing the frequency of fires. They pose a greater fire risk because they dry out earlier in the year … and have a very low ignition point.”Current Regulations around Prescribed BurningSince 2014, Native American tribes are required to obtain a permit signed by the local, state, or federal government before doing a prescribed or cultural burn. In addition to the permit, tribes must have a safety plan in place prior to the burn. These restrictions, while cumbersome, reduce the risk of prescribed burns resulting in uncontrolled fires. Nonetheless, the partnership of firefighters and Native American tribes in the practice of prescribed and cultural burns is becoming more common, bridging over two hundred years of restrictions that curbed a vital practice of stewardship, and which ultimately created the dangerous wildfire conditions we face today. Prescribed burns are also a vital wildfire prevention tool utilized by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The agency uses planned and controlled application of fire as an efficient and cost-effective land management tool to reduce vegetation and wildfire risk. Approximately 125,000 acres of wildlands are treated with prescribed burns annually in California, and this number is expected to rise as the risk of wildfires continues to grow and more access is given to Native Tribes to utilize this tool as well. Bill Tripp and the Karuk TribeBill Tripp is the Director of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy for the Karuk Tribe's Department of Natural Resources. The Karuk Tribe is a sovereign aboriginal people whose territory spans over a million acres in California and southern Oregon. The Karuk's Natural Resource Department was established in 1989 and operates over 85 projects in 9 integrated program areas ranging from fisheries and water quality to wildfire management and generational learning. The mission of the department is to “protect, enhance and restore the natural resources and ecological processes upon which the Karuk people depend.” Within the department they have established a wildfire management program that trains members to meet national and state standards for fire response, which is the same system required for prescribed fires. Tripp is also a tribal government representative for the Biden Wildfire Mitigation and Management Commission, as well as a co-chair of the Western Regional Strategy Committee, which works to create a new doctrine of fire management and restore fire resilient landscape and effective fire responses. Tripp works as a co-lead on the Western Klamath Restoration Partnership to build trust and a shared vision for restoring fire resilience at the landscape scale through the Klamath Mountains and beyond.Further ReadingFuel Breaks, Prescribed Burns Controversial Wildfire Tools, Lompoc Record, 2020History of Colonial Fire Laws, History.com, 2021'Fire is Medicine': the Tribes Burning California Forests to Save Them, The Guardian, 2019Karuk Tribe Department of Natural ResourcesPrescribed Burning, California Air Resource BoardPrescribed Burns, SmokeyBear.com, 2021Prescribed Fire, The California Department of Forestry and Fire ProtectionPrehistoric Fire Area and Emissions from California's Forest, Woodlands, Shrublands, and Grasslands, Science Direct, 2007

Meltdown: Discover Earth's Irreplaceable Glaciers and Learn What You Can Do to Save Them is a kids' guide to the glorious but endangered world of glaciers. Glaciers may not be as well-known as rain forests or coral reefs, but they are just as vital to the health of the planet, and just as threatened by climate change.           Packed with information, grounded in the latest science, with lively writing and illustrations throughout (including graphs, charts, infographics, photographs, and full-page art), Meltdown gives readers an eye-opening overview of glaciers and how important they are: There are over 100,000 glaciers covering 10% of earth's landmass, that hold almost three-quarters of the planet's fresh water, and act as protective shields to cool the atmosphere and combat climate change. We learn how glaciers were formed (some over two million years ago), how they move and carve the planet's landscape, and how scientists study them (the bluer the ice, the older it is). We learn the secrets of earth's climate history hidden deep in a glacier's core—and discover how climate change is causing glaciers to melt at unprecedented rates, putting the health of the planet in jeopardy.            But we are not left without hope. The final chapter offers positive steps readers can take to become climate activists, reduce their carbon footprint, and save the glaciers.

What is it that motivates Dan Saladino; journalist, broadcaster and author, to continue to tell stories of food? He has spent years producing and presenting BBC Radio 4's prestigious and long-running show The Food Programme, has made documentaries about food all over the world, and most recently has published an award-winning book. "Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them" has been picking up awards left, right, and centre since it was published, most recently picking up two prizes at the Guild of Food Writers Awards 2022. In this episodes of the Food Matters Live Podcast, Dan reveals how his passion for food, and the stories behind it, are inspired by his Sicilian roots. Not only because of the fantastic array of different foods he was exposed to at a time when UK cuisine left a little to be desired, but also because he saw first-hand just how central food was to people's lives and livelihoods. That drove him to a career telling stories about food, how it's made, who it's made by, and beyond. His book takes things a little further, exploring the foods that are disappearing from our plates and the planet, and explaining why he thinks it's vitally important that they are saved from complete extinction. "We have had a success story in the last 100 or so years in producing calories," he says. But he points out that those calories are dependent on burning fossil fuels, and using large amounts of water and chemicals. "There have been unintended consequences." One of those consequences is a lack of diversity in the crops we grow.  Dan uses the example of the Cavendish banana, which makes up almost the entirety of global banana exports. By relying on just one variety, the world's banana industry is at great risk as a single disease could wipe out global supply. That would be devastating for the banana industry, but we could be heading in the same direction with other crops, with even more dire consequences. Listen to the full episodes to find out what Dan thinks could save us from such an apocalyptic future, what keeps him going as a food journalist through an already glittering career, and after making hundreds of episodes of The Food Programme which one really sticks in his mind. Dan Saladino, Journalist, Broadcast, Author Dan Saladino is a journalist and broadcaster. He makes programmes about food for BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service.  His work has been recognised by the Guild of Food Writers Awards, the Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards, and in America by the James Beard Foundation.  "Eating to Extinction" was awarded the 2019 Jane Grigson Trust Award.  He lives in Cheltenham but his roots are Sicilian.

The Green Revolution in the second half of the 20th century was seen as an important solution to the problem of malnutrition in the developing world at the time. And while it may have succeeded in staving off hunger, the industrialization of agriculture created a whole new set of problems, chief among them a lack of diversity in our food system. Why does this matter? What is the food monoculture costing us? And what can we do to bring back some of the diverse foodways we've lost along the way? Dan Saladino is the renowned food journalist behind BBC Radio 4's The Food Programme and author of Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Dan joins Ross to explain why we so desperately need biodiversity in our food system, exploring why diverse foods may taste better, and could be better for us. Dan walks us through several examples of rare foods discussed in his book and offers insight on the people working to revive old foodways. Journalist and broadcaster Dan Saladino joins us for this episode. Dan is best known for his work as a food writer, and for his long-term contribution to the BBC's Food Programme.    Dan's recently published book Eating to Extinction:The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them, involved 10 years of travel and research, exploring the plight of unique food systems which are threatened and rapidly disappearing. Inspired by Slow Food's Ark of Taste, Dan explains the impact of industrialisation on our farming systems and what this means for our food culture. Starting with the Sicilian orange groves of his childhood, the past leads to the present and questions of whether the diversity of our food can be saved, and the need to exert collective pressure on the existing food system and demand food with a better story.

The Strategy Skills Podcast: Management Consulting | Strategy, Operations & Implementation | Critical Thinking

Welcome to Strategy Skills episode 239, an episode with a renowned food journalist, Dan Saladino. In this episode, Dan talks us through a very interesting topic: food extinction. He elaborated on the value of food diversity through factual examples and stories, and he explained the risks of homogeneity or genetic uniformity of crops, livestock, poultry, or other food supply, which adds more vulnerability to preserving these resources during a crisis. Dan Saladino is a renowned food journalist who has worked at the BBC for 25 years. For more than a decade, he has traveled the world recording stories of foods at risk of extinction—from cheeses made in the foothills of a remote Balkan mountain range to unique varieties of rice grown in southern China. His work has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation, the Guild of Food Writers, and the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards. Food is the best medicine, believes genetics expert Tim Spector, but most of the dietary advice that we are given is wrong, he claims. In his latest bestselling book, Spoon-Fed: Why Almost Everything We've Been Told About Food Is Wrong, he argues that the most dangerous myth of all about food is the assumption that we all respond to the same foods in the same way and the food industry's oversimplified approach to diet. For this discussion, Tim is joined by Dan Saladino, the award-winning food writer and broadcaster. Dan's new book, Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them, is a love letter to the world's great food traditions and a wake-up call to protect the planet's genetic biodiversity. I've been lucky enough to have interviewed some truly brilliant individuals in the past, especially those who've written timely and insightful books. As a bookworm at heart, I just love delving into these stories and piecing them out. My interview with BBC Radio food journalist, Dan Saladino, is no exception. His new book (which is receiving glowing reviews) tells a personal narrative of the diversity of food we risk losing if we're not careful. In Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them, Saladino takes you on a global journey from Tanzania to Australia, to Colorado and the Faroe Islands. Along the way, we learn about the precariousness of kavilca wheat in Turkey, the importance of the Tian Shan forests in Kazakhstan for apple diversity, and the sheer will of Atlantic salmon when returning to their place of origin to spawn. Each story is meticulously researched, with Saladino occasionally offering up his own empathetic and curious viewpoint. This book is not only an important work for our time, but an enjoyable ride through our past and present food ecosystems. In this interview, Dan digs into the nitty gritty of things in detail. I'm confident you'll come away with a fuller understanding of our food biodiversity but more importantly, a hungry desire to grab a copy of Eating to Extinction to sink your teeth into.Dan Saladino is a renowned food journalist who has worked at the BBC for twenty-five years. Picture walking into any grocery store and the shelves are filled with a variety of products and foods for you to choose from (at least in the US, Canada, and most of Europe pre-pandemic). It gives you the impression that you have great diversity and choice in what you eat, right? Our guest on the podcast today is Dan Saladino, a prominent BBC food journalist, who just wrote a book that proves your impression may be wrong.  Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them is an exploration into how the structure and globalization of our food system have caused a loss of food diversity and traditional food cultures. The resulting food monoculture brings with it staggering costs like a lack of resilience in the face of climate change, pests, and parasites that threaten our health and the health of the planet. Just take a look at these examples: The source of much of the world's seeds is mostly in the control of just four corporations.  Ninety-five percent of milk consumed in the United States comes from a single breed of cow.  Half of all the world's cheese is made with bacteria or enzymes made by one company. One in four beers drunk around the world is the product of one brewer. My co-host, James Connolly chats with Dan about why he felt compelled to write a book that shines a light on the issue of food extinction and why it's currently relevant in today's world.  Listen in as they cover: Dan's background and how he found the topic of endangered foods The history of seed hunting and seed saving The worldwide effects of colonialism How an accidental American cheesemaker saves an iconic British cheese Why advanced technology in agriculture isn't all bad The impacts of the 2008 economic crisis on agriculture Episode resources and transcript are available at www.sustainabledish.com Connect with Dan: Radio Show: The Food Programme on BBC Radio 4   Instagram: @dan.saladino Twitter: @DanSaladinoUK LinkedIn: Dan Saladino *** Episode Credits: Thank you to all who've made this show possible. In 1947 actress Gay Gibson disappeared from her cabin on an ocean liner off the coast of West Africa. The deck steward, James Camb, admitted to pushing her body out a porthole, but insisted she had died of natural causes and not in a sexual assault. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the curious case of the porthole murder, which is still raising doubts today. We'll also explore another fraudulent utopia and puzzle over a pedestrian's victory. Intro: Soldiers in World War I described "shell sense" -- an uncanny foreknowledge of imminent shellfire. In this episode we travel to a world without bees. And not just honey bees, all bees.     You’ve probably heard a lot of doom and gloom predictions about what might happen if honey bees went extinct. Mass famine! The end of coffee! World economic collapse! But is that all true? (Probably not.) And how likely is a honeybee extinction anyway? (Extremely unlikely.) Plus, what about all the other bees in the world? We ponder these questions and more in this episode.    To walk us through what might happen to agriculture if bees went away, I talked to Marcelo A. Aizen, a researcher who studies plant pollinator interactions. His research suggests that the loss of honeybees might not be as dire as everybody claims. And to talk about the more neglected bees out there, I called up Elaine Evans, a professor at the University of MInnesota’s Bee Lab, and Paige Embry, the author of the forthcoming book Our Native Bees: North America’s Endangered Pollinators and the Fight to Save Them.     Plus, a little bonus “what if” at the end, featuring cartoonist Dean Yeagle, the man who drew the original Honey Nut Cheerios bee.     Further reading:    How much does agriculture depend on pollinators?
