Just as a reminder, Lauren is Lead Analytical Scientist at Arxada and founder of ChemHerstory blog, which is dedicated to communicating the stories of the lost women in the history of STEM. This work and its implications were so ground-breaking that it was awarded the Nobel Prize in that same year (1957)--but only to Dr. Wu's collaborators, not to her. Despite this, she continued to conduct stellar research and act as a true leader in science for the rest of her career. Inspiring Stories 032 - Dr Lucy Woods - Client Story Subscribe to the Women In STEM Career & Confidence Podcast on your favourite platform and stay tuned. Today on the Women in STEM Career & Confidence podcast, I interview one of my clients, Dr Lucy Woods. She joins us from Singapore where she recently started a new role at Bruker as the Commercial Director of APAC. Lucy has always been very intentional in her career design. Even at A-Levels she had the forethought to pick complimentary subjects to science, rather than a full grouping of the sciences (like me). Completing her PhD was a strategic decision to progress her industrial, rather than academic career. However, being intentional in our careers, doesn't always mean that everything works out smoothly. During this episode Lucy talks about: The importance of learning self-awareness as a way to restore confidence, after being unsuccessful in an internal promotion. Using your career values to actively make choices in your career. In Lucy's case some interesting decisions about following her value for adventure. She also highlights, how understanding her natural talents aided her to build a complimentary team. And that we are not alone in our careers. We benefit from a wide range of support including coaches, managers, colleagues, friends and family. Inspiring Stories 031 - Dr Alice Holly - Client Story Today I am joined by Dr Alice Holly, Technical Sales Manager at Cambridge Bioscience. In today's episode we talk about: - How Alice went about asking work to pay for her coaching, and to her surprise, just how delighted they were to support her. - The result of reordering her life values, so that vitality is now in top spot, instead of career. You might assume it would mean a decrease in focus and productivity at work, but actually, the opposite is true. - Being able to speak up in the boardroom and get ideas across in a way that is really listened to. - Using bridging rituals to help form strong boundaries between home and work, to be fully present in the evening, for the people and things that mean most to her. Today on Women in STEM Career & Confidence I'm joined by Dr Kasia Zmarzly, Programme Manager at LGC supporting management of NIHR and NHS England funding calls. During this episode Kasia talks about her coaching journey: And how she learnt that leadership starts with self-leadership. Putting yourself first is not selfish, it's essential for your success. How Kasia felt capable but it wasn't translating to confidence, until we stopped the old patterns of behaviours from repeating, using trigger tracking and by unpicking bonding patterns (our default position in relationships). How Kasia has had a big shift in her approach to work, becoming an advocate for work-life balance and that means being able to speak up and say the uncomfortable things. Inspiring Stories 029 - Dr Mihaela Taranu - Client Story Today I am joined by one of my clients, Dr Mihaela Taranu, a psychologist specialising in metacognitive therapy and a postdoc at Aarhus University Denmark. We talk about how making a shift in your career also changes your identity. The more we cling to our old identity, the more we will ignore evidence it is not a match for us. This is why taking the next step in your career is an emotional journey as much as a practical one. Mihaela talks about her favourite part of the Career Design Mastermind programme. Aligning your purpose-mission-vision to understand your next career pivot. We also bring distinction to the Inner Critic and how to have a more supportive internal narrative. Inspiring Stories 028 - Dr Erika Parkinson - Client Story Understanding our natural talents is crucial in career design and fulfilment. Often, we make ourselves bad and wrong for not being talented at a particular skill. For example, not being a big picture thinker, or not being great at networking. As a result, we end up not being able to appreciate when we are adding great value, because those things feel too easy. When I first started working with Dr Erika Parkinson, she was employed as the Project Manager of Dorset Clinical Trials Unit at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation. Up until that point, she had been forcing herself to deliver outside of her leadership strengths to the point of burnout. Putting in more hours to compensate, can only work as a strategy for so long. Through our coaching work, she became clear on her talents and is now able to appreciate and add her unique value as Director of R&D at TopMD with a sustainable work-life balance.
