Western lifestyle factors such as poor diet, obesity, sedentary behavior, and exposure to toxins are likely significant contributors to the rise of early-onset cancers, suggesting that shifts in lifestyle and public health initiatives could impact cancer rates.Younger cancer patients are often diagnosed at later stages due to a lack of preventative care and symptoms being easily dismissed.Increased screening accessibility is crucial for early detection and prevention. This includes molecular testing and colonoscopies, which offer the opportunity to remove precancerous polyps, preventing them from developing into something more serious. The battle against cancer requires collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, academic institutions, industry partners, and advocacy organizations. This is not just one organization's fight; collaborative efforts must continue.Resources:Follow Dr. Karin Tollefson, Chief Oncology Medical Officer at Pfizer, on LinkedIn.Discover more about Pfizer on their LinkedIn and website.Read more on Pfizer in Oncology here. But I wasn't believing any of my hype. A mentor came to me and said, Hey, listen, everything in your life is neutral until you label it. You get to look at this any way you want to. And so then I started to realize, Okay, well, we're all living moments. Every day is filled with a whole bunch of moments. And if I have people in my life who I love and love me back, then I can't call a full day a bad one. That's why I came back to call my, that accident day, my last bad day. I've had definitely bad moments since then, but I still have a lot of love in my life. So I can't call a full day a bad one. But I also knew this, that I had to find a way to ground myself because my recovery felt so overwhelming. I had to figure out, much like in sports, how to slow the game down. Everything was just coming at me, much like life today. And I just knew I had to slow things down a bit to create some space so I could be thoughtful and intentional about how I wanted to go forward." On Who You Surround Yourself With "I think it's very important to surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. And I think this is a big thing because for a lot of us men, especially as we think about retirement, a lot of our relationships are work relationships that we think those guys are our friends, but they're really our colleagues. And some of them are friends, and they'll stay friends for a while. And I think it's very important to surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. But it's a minority of the relationships we have, maybe on one hand or both hands. So as we go into this next phase of our lives, into retirement, men or women, it's good to have people around you who can bring out the best in you, to help maybe clarify things when you get stuck or challenge you so you can be the best you can be - or to be there in celebration or to be there for a crisis or some type of comfort.

On today's episode, I am sharing my personal personal story about seizing the moment, understanding that unexpected things happen, and it's what we do next as leaders that matters most.In 2008, I suffered a traumatic brain injury. My life was forever changed and I have come to appreciate the smallest acts of kindness. It is why I believe we need to make every moment count. Key Takeaways:As leaders, we have a choice. When faced with a challenge we can rise above it or let it consume us. I hope that you will feel inspired to know that rising above is within your reach.Finding Purpose:I found that when we are at the lowest point from an unexpected circumstance there is only upward momentum. Volunteer, find a cause that lights you up and take on experiential leadership roles. The Power of a Strong Community: I discovered through my leadership journey with the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association how vital surrounding ourselves with the right people, who level us up to be our best selves matters. Stepping into Leadership: “Do something that scares you every day”- Eleanor Roosevelt. Joining the HBA board and becoming President was a big leap forward. I learned by doing, and found lifelong friends. The journey is hard enough, don't go it alone. Find leaders you admire and connect with them. You will be surprised and delighted by the outcome.Lessons from the JourneyWhen life throws unexpected challenges our way, we can find the strength to pivot and embrace change. I would not have been able to rise to leadership, succeed in my career without having the right people around me. There is power in external advisors and sponsors. Surrounding yourself with supportive people can make all the difference. In my rise to leadership, the secret to real success is it takes hard work. You have to tap into your brave, embrace resilience, be persistent and find the courage to take on new roles, even when you're not sure you're ready."Only you can summon the courage to take a step forward to leadership. It is your courage that will empower you to persist when you are faced with a challenge.”-Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®"When you are faced with a choice, listen to the messages your heart is telling you, open yourself up to the possibilities, and embrace all that you are meant to be.”-Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®“The key to taking a new leadership role is to roll up your sleeves and put in the work. If you've been waiting for the right moment, I'm here to tell you there is no perfect moment- just do it." -Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®"One of the most important things we can do as a leader is to express gratitude. Be thankful to friends and colleagues and your team. Let them know they matter." -Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®A Message of HopeThis personal story proves that even in the face of adversity, we can shape our future. By embracing unexpected change and staying resilient, we can overcome obstacles and make a difference. Feeling inspired? How does a biotech startup manage to forge $125 million in partnerships with AbbVie and Eli Lilly in just under two years post-inception? Our next guest, Peter Anastasiou, CEO of Capsida Biotherapeutics since 2022, attributes much of the company's rise to addressing unmet patient needs. First invented by Viviana Gradinaru, director of the Center for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at the Chen Institute for Neuroscience at the California Institute of Technology, Capsida's next-generation gene therapy platform engineers the capsids in adeno-associated viruses, or AAVs. The company uses this technology to develop treatments that are being researched for central nervous system and eye disorders. On this episode, we delve more into Capsida's technology—which manipulates the amino acid sequence on the surface of the AAV, and identifies and engineers capsids (the protein surrounding a virus) that can cross the blood-brain barrier in significant amounts in order to ferry medication to where it's needed in the body. A key principle of life science success is embracing a diverse leadership team, and Peter is a longtime advocate of gender parity at the leadership level and has been honored for his mentoring contributions—he was named the Honorable Mentor by the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association in 2019. His dedication to mentoring women is not only personally important to him as a father of two daughters, he says it makes the most business sense in addition to being the right thing to do. “The idea of trying to conquer such daunting challenges that we do in biotech…with a basically homogeneous group of people trying to solve that problem…it's never going to happen,” he says. “The only way to solve the challenges is by bringing the best minds around the table.” Learn more about Capsida Biotherapeutics and Peter Anastasiou. Take a listen to HerCsuite™ Founder and Host Natalie Benamou, MBA (she/hers) and Victoria Pelletier, (she/hers) as they discuss how organizations can Build a More Inclusive Culture. "If we want to build a more inclusive culture where people feel like they belong, are more engaged, and therefore performing at higher levels, then a big part of that is the time we invest around the people in the business. What do we need to do to make that an element that we measure? What are we doing to create a more inclusive culture? That should absolutely be a measure of performance beyond the widgets or productivity metrics that need to be produced each year."- Victoria Pelletier 3 Ways to Create Flexibility in the Workplace: "There are no schedules only deliverables" Focus on the end result. Communicate commitments and meet client needs. Trust your team to deliver. ERG Best Practices: "Where there is conviction there is capacity." Self-awareness really is a superpower. Once you have the belief in yourself (regardless of what others assume about you), magic happens. In this episode we meet introvert, Catrina Franklin, a Senior Manager in R&D for a pharmaceutical company in Lake County, Illinois. Catrina shares her story of being told by a senior VP that they personally would not hire her as a project manager as her 'character' did not fit. She was deemed to be too quiet and not assertive. Luckily that did not deter Catrina and with her strong belief in herself as an introvert, and administrative arts background, she became her own self-advocate seeking out mentors and voluntary roles in which she could develop and gain experiences in being a leader. Catrina truly believes that in the corporate world, being quiet, not 'considered vocal enough', and speaking up - should not be seen as a lack of leadership quality. About Catrina Franklin Catrina Franklin is Senior Manager in R&D of AbbVie Pharmaceuticals in Lake County, Illinois. She previously worked for other companies such as Baxter and AmerisourceBergen as a project manager and in regulatory affairs for over 15 years. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Catrina is a graduate of Cass Technical High School and holds a bachelor's degree in Music and African American studies from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan; additionally, she holds a master's degree in business management from the University of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona. After earning her bachelor's degree, Catrina moved to Washington, DC to work for the American Symphony League (now League of American Orchestras), an organisation that leads, supports and champions America's orchestras and vitality of music they perform. She later moved back to the midwest to become Director of Operations for the Lake Forest Symphony in Lake Forest, Illinois, until she left to focus on her family and earn her master's degree. Catrina's graduate studies led her to the corporate arena, supporting regulatory affairs. She received numerous volunteer awards for her service with her company's business resource groups and the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA). Even though she is not currently working in the not-for-profit sector, her love for the arts lead her into service on various dance boards, and she now serves as Board President of The Red Clay Dance Company, Chicago, IL as well as Chief of Staff for the Project Management Institute (PMI) Chicagoland, President for the Midwest Region Education and Events for HBA. When she is not volunteering she enjoys traveling, sewing and spending time with her family and friends. https://www.linkedin.com/in/catrina-f-248b5724/

A good leader sets the tone for an organization. Without good leadership, employees won't know the right direction to take or what they can improve upon. While men and women may generally have different needs and motivations, the qualities that make a good leader are the same for both. What is also important and needed for all leaders to succeed is to continuously seek out next level mentors with fresh perspective so they don't get caught up in their own echo chamber and get left behind. Dr. Annalisa Jenkins, M.B.B.S., F.R.C.P. is a biopharma thought leader and a board member for several growing companies. She shares with us her experiences, from the British military to the boardroom, and what it's been like to work in this age of life science innovation and digital advances. Coming from a generation where male mentors were common, Dr. Jenkins speaks about working as a woman in her industry and how she's learned to be a “tough but fair” leader under their direction. Her broad array of experiences in health sciences shows us how to bring vision to our workplace as leaders. Welcome to Episode 59. My guest for this episode is Peg Dougherty Marcus, Co-Founder of the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association (HBA). Peg is, quite frankly, one of the most inspiring women I've met in a long time. She started her career in a healthcare communications agency and she was just 23. In this chat, we talk about why and how she started the HBA in 1977, despite every obstacle, and also in a dominating 'boys club' culture. She also talks about why women were scared to speak out about harassment at work, and whether she thinks things have changed today. She shares some really practical tips for women's safety when you're travelling or maybe entertaining for business. She's a passionate supporter of women in business, she's a natural connector, and she champions every woman who works in healthcare. If you're working in the era of healthcare, and you're not a member of the HPA, then you can go to their website and check out all the amazing benefits of joining. It's HBAnet.org. I hope you find this chat as inspiring as I did because maybe it's going to inspire you to get involved in a relevant community that already exists for you in your area. You might even think about gathering some of your peers together in the industry and starting your own. A couple of quick announcements. A quick reminder that my Account Accelerator training programme for agency account managers and directors starts on 10th of May 2022 and it's filling up quickly. So, if you'd like to join me, you can check out all the details on my website www.accountmanagementskills.com/training. And you can book a quick call with me to check that it's a good fit for you.
