New novels by Sara Hamdan and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas follow women in the entertainment industry who must balance ambition with the pressures of family, friendship and love. First, in What Will People Think?, a Palestinian-American woman named Mia works as a fact checker by day and performs standup comedy by night. She hides her comedy career in order to protect her family until she discovers her grandmother has a secret too. In today's episode, Hamdan joins NPR's Ailsa Chang for a conversation about the politicization of the Palestinian identity and using comedy to explore cultural stereotypes. I’m Cindy MacMillan and today’s guest is Virginia Joy.  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.   Virginia Joy is originally from New York. Born in Brooklyn and she knew as a kid she always wanted to help people. Virginia Joy’s interest in Aromatherapy began over 20 years ago…as many who seek alternative therapies. She began using essential oils for common ailments: headaches, colds and flu, and then found herself reaching for essential oils for many other issues in particular - addressing the emotions. This was back in 1983, and there really weren’t many resources to buy essential oils at all.   In 2010 Stillpoint Aromatics was formally birthed.  At Stillpoint Aromatics, she sources and imports over 400 essential oils and extracts! All of Stillpoint's oils are either certified organic, wild-harvested, unsprayed, biodynamically farmed with the rhythms of the earth and or vintage.  Here’s a glimpse of our conversation:  4:35 You know, it really was. It was really an organic journey and looking back, I think those journeys, the unplanned ones are the most rewarding and the most expansive. 6:15 It's a great question and there's a lot of confusion because essential oils are not flower essences and vice versa. 11:17 So even if somebody has, let's say, a back issue, there will always be a pain blend, so to speak for the back. But there's always another reason why that back is flaring. And that's where aromatherapy can add such a different dimension working on the psyche and on those patterns that cause the physical issue.  15:24 But for just grief in general, Melissa (Melissa officinalis) it's also lemon balm is one of the premier oils for shock and trauma. I have a psychiatrist friend that uses Melissa - keeps a couple of drops on a cotton ball in a plastic bag in his office - for when his patients either disassociate or are having a lot of trouble - to breathe that.  16:43 But people say what's your favorite oil? I have to tell you, that the aromas that help shift me are Coppertone or Chinese food. To grow your personal training business in 2020 and in 2021 you'll have to do things differently than you've ever done them. If you're starting a health coaching or personal training business you may honestly be at an advantage. You're not trying to fit into a mold that has only marginally been working in the past and that's forever broken since COVID19 began. You can most clearly evaluate the problems happening now and solve them. Why would you ever stop yourself from getting what you always say you want? Why would you stop yourself from making the kind of money you want? Why would you ever do that? But we do. If you don't try, you can't fail. If you don't start, you can't risk the embarrassment or discomfort that comes with not knowing exactly what comes next. If you wait til you're 100% ready, you'll never do anything. I didn't say it first. To grow your personal training business in 2020 you already know what's staring you in the face. You weren't ready for changed that happened. You do have to deal with them, anyway. You start where you are. If you find yourself thinking you need one more certification, or maybe you need a degree or another one… If you think you just need to review this information again… If those things are always preventing you from doing the things that really get you clients … Like making phone calls and following up on them… Like learning how to create better emails and going live on video so you get better by getting comfortable… Like getting in front of people to speak… in podcasts, on their summits, and again on your own live social media accounts… If you put things off until an imaginary time when you think you'll actually have more time…. Your life will be a series of “I'll be happy when…” “I'll make time for that when…” What Will People Think? No one wants to be judged or criticized. Your mistake though is in thinking that people aren't judging because you're not doing something.  They're always judging. The point is, their thoughts in the end don't matter. What matters is the regret or reward that you had doing the thing you wanted to do. If you are worried about being liked, or popular, or worried about what they'll think… you're making it all about you. It's about them. But we do this. We do it when we're scared, insecure, not feeling safe. Stop Procrastinating to Grow Your Personal Training Business in 2020 There's a flip side to this procrastination. And that is… why you get in your way when it's going well. When things are going really well and you find you get hurt, or sick, or you refuse to make more progress. Not outwardly, you never say, I'm not going to make progress, but you hit a wall. What's that about? Well, it's not really a wall at all it's a ceiling. When you're doing really well and you're gaining momentum, say you're getting clients, making more money, and suddenly you can't grow any more, in fact you may have a set back. What's that all about? It's Got a Name It's called Upper Limiting. It's a definite thing. You have a happiness ceiling. You're only comfortable being so happy. And after that you keep looking for the other shoe to drop. You ask all the time what's the worst thing that will happen? In fact you're looking for the worst thing to happen. So you think of reasons why you can't do something. You're too busy. You're overwhelmed. You have to figure it out for yourself first (as if you must be perfect before you can share it with others). You have a long list of “I can't because…” going on inside your head. There's a reason why you can't start creating your own brand on social media or begin offering classes or create a course. There's a reason you can't call someone you know you could help and ask them to be a client. There's a reason you won't get a coach and learn how to create an offer that is irresistible for the customers who love you already. There's safety in claiming you're overwhelmed or in getting ready to get ready. At least you subconsciously think there is. What you want to do is see it coming. Every time you are about to grow, do something new that has potential to increase your revenue or your happiness quota, you'll resist. We all do it. You've got to expect it. When you find yourself eating poorly, staying up late, skipping workouts or working out too much… because that's so comfortable to think if you just look more perfect… that's self-sabotage… or upper limiting, trying to keep you safe from doing the things you really want to do to grow your business.   Trying to start or grow your personal training business in 2020? Hey ass kickers! Well, after nearly 10 years of blogging, 5 years and 228 podcast episodes, I’m FINALLY doing a favorite things episode! I tried to record both as a regular podcast episode AND video, but alas, I had an technology FAIL on the video side, so these images will have to do! So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite things… Misc. Golden Girls coasters. I don’t even think I need to sell you on this one. Hair and beauty: Nume Curling Wand- When I do actually do my hair, I use this curling wand. I’ve had a few different ones, and this one by far is my favorite. I often get comments on my hair and on one occasion was chased down in Target by a breathless woman asking me how I got my curls. Lush’s Sea Salt Spray-- I’ve tried several Sea Salt sprays, even a big brand name that will go unnamed, but they’ve all been a huge waste of money, until I tried Lush’s brand. The smell is amazing, it’s not sticky, and works great. MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix-- I use the powder (BTW, that link will take you to my shade, NC30, but you probably want to go somewhere where they sell it so someone can match your skin tone). Super easy to put on (I use a brush) and I use to even out my skin tone. Add a little blush, eyebrow pencil, and mascara and I’m done. The bralette- Two of my favorites are here and here. Great for the small to medium breasted women who don’t need a whole lot of support. Gold bond hand cream- I feel like such a grandma with this, but… I have really dry skin and can’t stand it when my hands feel dry. I’ve tried approximately 17,000 different hand creams and this one BY FAR is my favorite. It’s not greasy (unless you use way too much), and it works, even through a hand washing. I keep the small tubes in different drawers all over my house, in my purse, and in the car. I don’t consider myself a super techie person, but these are the apps I can’t live without AND they’re all easy to use. Apps I use: Audible-  Great for audiobooks! Need I say more? Goodreads- Organize all the books you’ve read, are currently reading, and want to read. I use it especially for logging books I want to read, and reading reviews from people I know-- as it syncs with Facebook. Voxer- I’m obsessed with this app and have been for years. It’s changed my relationship with my friends for the better! It’s a walkie talkie app that allows you to also text, send images and videos, and gifs. I also use it with my private clients. Podcast app- Duh. Venmo- Pay people and get paid easily with NO FEES. Super easy to set up and use. (I don’t know if I would recommend this for business, but check with your CPA.) Insight Timer- GREAT for meditation, especially for beginners. YogaGlo- Get access to loads of different teachers for yoga and meditation, all from the comfort of home! (Get your first two weeks of YogaGlo FREE when you sign up on YogaGlo.com/KICKASS.) Yoga Studio- Super easy to use Yoga app. The reason I love this is the simplicity. Not a lot of choices, but just enough to get the job done. gTasks Pro- Essential, especially if you use Google Calendar. It syncs to the “tasks” portion of your Google Cal, and is SO easy to use. Brian Mayer discusses several area that contribute to the stigma of divorce.  There can be much shame and guilt when it comes to divorce and how we view ourselves.  We will talk about how being vulnerable is actually a good thing and can help reduce our shame.  We hope you enjoy today's message.  For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Brian discusses the direction of the show.  He plans to have all sorts of great topics and guests, including from a spiritual and a more scientific research based approach as well.   Shame is very prevalent issue when it comes to divorce.  It is a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.     Vulnerability is the greatest sign of courage according to Brene Brown.  It means putting yourself out there in spite of what happened in the past.  She also says it is the thing that fuels innovation, change, and creativity. Shame and Guilt are hard to eliminate completely.  The goal is should be to obtain power over but to not necessarily to try to make it vanish   Feelings of Failure - The ultimate feeling of failure was had by Princess Diana and Prince Charles who divorced after a true fairy tale wedding and marriage.  While they are royalty, they are after all humans who had an immense pressure on them to live that out.     Feeling Less Than You Are - The average time it takes to feel like ourselves again after a divorce is about 4 years.   Feeling Different is another reason that dealing with the stigma of divorce is hard.  It can be tough to live physically and mentally in a world that seems to cater more toward initial marriages and intact families.     Resources Mentioned Brene Brown TED Talk called “Listening to Shame”:   I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn't): Making the Journey from "What Will People Think?" to "I Am Enough" by Brene Brown Article:  How divorce still carries a stigma in the 21st century Thanks For Listening!
