Miller's Dale. Steep sided. A valley in the Derbyshire Dales with magnificent contours. High rocky outcrops. Sheer faced cliffs. Green fields plunging down to a quiet, winding river. It's a place where geologists go, to see the evidence of lava flows from millions of years ago. Where historians go, to marvel at Victorian viaducts and tunnels cut by hand in the 1800s. And where weekend people go to trek or cycle through open country along the disused railway lines that used to carry the trains between Manchester and London. Miller's Dale feels cut off from the world. Alive in the moment, but somehow separated. As you wonder its winding and overgrown footpaths, you sense the valley is a place not only of restorative solitude, but a place where you are free to imagine yourself conscious in another time. Another era. Hearing the echoes of a rumbling steam train, chuffing northwards with Victorian haste. The meek baas of sheep, grazing on wet Iron Age pastures. Or the tide of the bygone sea, that the composition of the rocks shows this landscape almost unimaginably used to be. Now the sound of water flowing is from the river. the River Wye. How steadily it runs, along the valley bottom. Open country water, that along the shallow stretches rills, pleasantly, over tumbled stones. Cool. Refreshing. Consistent. Rilling in watery melodies, if you let yourself listen for long enough. * We left the Lento mics alone, hanging from a steeply leaning tree, to capture the spatial sound of the River Wye flowing through the night. Some planes are audible in the sky, possibly more than usual for 2am, due to a major air traffic control breakdown the night before.

In this episode of At Risk Radio, David Witt speaks with Dan Rilling from Lakeview Camp. Dan speaks about a unique ministry opportunity and a gift of generosity that God continues to multiply. Dan is the manager at Lakeview Camp Dan Rilling is the manager at Lakeview Campground in Canada. Dan felt like God called him to build a campground and then God provided another campground, which became an opportunity for giving to others. The Lord has blessed Dan with so much more than he could ever ask or imagine. In fact, He first provided $100,000 for Dan to give to missions and then 10 years later, God has given Dan $1 million dollars to give away to others! He gave the proceeds from his campground to missions; specifically the Piaroa tribe so they could have a Bible in their own language. The Piaroa are an indigenous group of people who live in Venezuela and have never had the Bible translated into their language before now. He is excited about the opportunity to be a broker for missions and provide Bibles for these people who have never heard or read God's Word! Dan challenges listeners to ask God for resources that they can given away to others How can I be more generous? How can I use my gifts and talents to give more effectively? Can I broker missions for people in my community? Dan has started a teaching ministry and can be reached at (780) 991-6685

According to the 2019 documentary, The Need to Grow, industrial agriculture is now the most destructive human activity taking place on the planet. The United Nations estimates that at current depletion rates, we have fewer than 60 years of soil left on Earth due to these activities. This week's How To Die Happy podcast guest is American chef Evan Rilling, who's on a mission to change people's relationship with food and the land from which it comes. Former chef to Will Smith and his family, Evan is a prolific proponent for permaculture farming. He invites us to consider what we are consuming, its provenance, and what farming and manufacturing methods are used to grow and create the food we eat. Permaculture farming is a contrasting sustainable model to mono-crop agriculture. Bill Mollison is renowned as the Godfather of permaculture, a system that integrates land, people and the environment through natural synergies – recreating the zero-waste, closed-loop systems found in nature. Permaculture is a multidisciplinary practice that includes construction, agriculture, energy, forestry, water, waste management, animal management and much more. The entire process is guided by principles that all permaculture designers need to follow. The 12 principles of permaculture are: Observe and interact Catch and store energy Obtain a yield Apply self-regulation and feedback Use and value renewables Produce no waste Design from patterns to details Integrate don't segregate Use small, slow solutions Use and value diversity Use edges and value the marginal Creatively use and respond to change Evan and his friend Maggie co-founded Ulu Food Forest. The project is a community permaculture garden in Bali, which aims to create a new system that restores degenerated land, regenerates the natural ecosystems, and grows forest-based sustainable businesses that honour the Earth and local people. The project invites volunteers to give their time to the garden in exchange for learning valuable lessons about permaculture design. Aside from some surprising yet welcome spontaneous rapping, Martin, Jules, and Evan also discussed travelling, surfing, our fundamental relationship with food and the planet, and Evan's stunning new cookbook, RetrEAT. Perhaps you're interested in permaculture farming, or maybe you're keen to grow your own food or at least grow your own veg? In which case, you'll likely enjoy our interview with the wonderfully happy, incredibly tall surfing, rapping chef, Evan Rilling. As usual, this interview seamlessly rolls between seriousness and fun while sharing stories and practical utilities for the arts of living & dying well. After all, what we consume profoundly affects our mind, body, and soul. Postscript note: During the interview, Martin mentions a man in South Central, LA, but can not recall his name. The Gangsta Gardener's name is Ron Finlay, and you can find out more about his wonderful man and his project here. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/howtodiehappy/message

Trapped in the vicious circle of achievement, little did I know that I was driven by regret, shame & anger about the past, and fear & worry about the future. Never in the present moment. The BIG revelations started to happen over the last 2 years, when it became ever more obvious that all this stuff is just about dealing with and fixing symptoms at a surface level, but not dealing with the underlying cause. The real cause is us creating our circumstances & experiences through our subconscious mind without our knowing, until we know - and change it. I crashed a few times hard until I started to really listen and to wake up. Evermore clearly realizing that I am causing my own suffering. And discovering that my beliefs actually didn’t make much sense at all! They were almost all negative and self-defeating. Literally. But also realizing that I have the power and the tools to break through my fears, thoughts & beliefs, and can create my dreams! So then that's what I did!! And still do! I'm on the Hero’s Journey - and invite you to join me! There is nothing else as challenging but also rewarding!! The adventure of a lifetime!! Since then nothing really has been the same. Literally a quantum shift in all dimensions: From almost divorced from a sovereign & happy marriage. Leaving my corporate job to follow my heart. From a shy, quiet, withdrawn, depressed, resentful, and detached to enjoying speaking, teaching, organizing events, and loving myself! And to rediscover my purpose. Since then my mission is to share these teachings so that you can align with your purpose too! It took several miles, over claggy east Hertfordshire footpaths and a waterlogged bridleway, to find a quiet field. A peaceful spot where the susurrations of the natural landscape outweigh that of the distant A10. To break our winter walk, we came off the bridleway and followed a babbling brook into a spindly thicket, where we left the microphones alone to record. The water's running steady. Rilling over dark stones, flowing in and out of small pools hidden under grass, from where a bit of bobbing wood spins and softly knocks. Above small birds flutter and chitter in the leafless trees and far off, seagulls. An old Land Rover splashes its way down the empty puddled lane. A lofty buzzard circles and droops its whistling call high over the nearby wood. Behind tails of wood smoke, jagged shapes of crows, leap and caw between the trees. Somewhere deep in Young Wood, a pheasant creaks. It's waiting for the dusk.

His desire to make a difference in people’s lives has ignited his mission to expand peoples mind & potential. He is Co-Founder of the non-profit Council for Human Development - a collective of social entrepreneurs dedicated to expand peoples creativity and consciousness en masse, and provide sustainable work for 1bn people by 2030! David Karasek held multiple Swiss national records in swimming and was on the Olympic team 2012 in London. A career in banking beaconed but by the age of 32 David knew there was a bigger game to play. After traveling the world speaking with business gurus, David found their levels of awareness were limited — thus he became a Co-Founder of the CHD to make a major impact on the world. He found that by opening his heart and doing what felt right, his life took on a completely new, exciting & fulfilling dynamic.

Claudia Rilling is a professional fine artist and teacher residing just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her art is represented by Kim Eagles-Smith Gallery in Mill Valley. Her current work consists mainly of florals, landscapes, and cityscapes. These paintings are based on the relationships of planes, light, and color, placed within carefully constructed compositions. Originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Claudia began studying classical drawing and design at the age of sixteen and dedicated herself to learning these principles. Claudia graduated from Boston University's College of Fine Arts where she further developed her drawing and painting skills. After college, she moved to Philadelphia where she worked full-time for Anthropologie Corporation as the assistant to the art department. Following this, she relocated to San Francisco to obtain her MFA degree in painting from the Academy of Art University. She continues to teach online for the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and is an adjunct professor at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster, PA. On your journey as an artist, have you experienced a season where you wanted to expand your painting skills? What helped you in that season? What would you suggest to others who are in that season right now? My guest, Claudia Rilling was kind enough to open up about this topic as it relates to her own career as an artist. In our conversation, we also touch on Claudia’s search for direction, her time studying under Israel Hershberg, the technical details of her time in the studio, what attracts her to a subject, and much more. I can’t wait for you to hear some of the powerful insights that Claudia has to share. Searching for direction. As an artist, you are most likely very familiar with the sense of searching for direction in your artwork and in your career in general. What has helped you on your journey? Were you better off finding your path on your own or did it help to be connected to an art community? In my conversation with Claudia Rilling, she shares aspects of her journey and how she struggled and then eventually found her voice and diction as an artist. Specifically, Claudia points to a season of life in her twenties where she struggled with mark making. Before long, Claudia ended up going to grad school where she would continue to wrestle with and then hone her voice and approach as an artist. Honing and expanding your painting skills. What does it take for an artist to get to the point where they finally feel comfortable with their painting skills? Is that even possible or does the artist have to come to terms with a lifelong struggle in this area? Artist Claudia Rilling explains that in her experience, expanding and honing your painting skills is something that most artists continue to work on throughout their career. Having said that, there comes a point where an experienced artist feels more comfortable with their skill sets and abilities. I hope artists like you get as much out of the technical aspects of my conversation with Claudia as I did! Also, don’t forget to check out images of Claudia’s work located at the end of this post. The drawbacks of viewing art digitally. One of the questions I like to put to experienced artists like Claudia Rilling is finding out what they see in the painting world as it sits in today’s landscape. As usual, I was intrigued by Claudia’s response. In her opinion, due to the numerous closures of art galleries and the increased proliferation of art being viewed online, we’ve lost an important feature in the art world. While many artists are becoming more technologically and digitally astute, Claudia maintains that the move to a digital and virtual experience with art is not necessarily a good thing. What do you think of Claudia’s take? Do you agree? Do you view the digital movement as a positive step or a negative one? How to tell when a painting is finished. A question many artists struggle to answer is; when is a painting “Finished?” Do you still struggle with this question? What strategies or methods have you used to help you conclude your paintings? While there is no perfect answer, my guest, Claudia Rilling was kind enough to share her thoughts on this important step in creating artwork. In Claudia’s experience, it all comes down to getting the input of fellow artists. She quips with a great expression, “How many artists does it take to make a painting? Two! One to paint and the other to tell them when to stop.” Are you the type of artist who has the confidence to stop on their own or have you found it helpful to get the opinion of fellow artists? In a now classic 1971 paper, Robert Trivers proposed that many human social emotions evolved in response to the need to negotiate relationships based on reciprocal altruism, which were likely crucial to the survival of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. In the same paper, he argued that the iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma game could serve as a model for relationships based on reciprocal altruism. Over the past 15 years, our lab has utilized the iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma game paradigm in combination with fMRI to investigate the neural bases of human social emotions. We have described 1) neural responses to both reciprocated and unreciprocated cooperation, 2) sex differences in these responses, 3) modulation of these responses by psychopathic personality, 4) modulation of these responses by the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin, and 5) modulation of these responses by oxytocin receptor genotypes. In this talk, I will summarize and synthesize the above research, while also integrating findings from other research groups relevant to understanding the neural bases of human social emotions. Jewelry artist Melanie Rilling was born and reared in Mississippi, where the very land seems to be steeped in the eccentricities and literature of the Faulkner and Welty tradition. Love of the written word was ingrained from an early age. While she will always be a storyteller and writer, finding the more tactile art of jewelry-making has enriched her life and her appreciation of the beauty this world holds.
