Ime tedna je Matija Solce, režiser, ki so ga nagradili za dve različni predstavi. Na 33. Dnevih komedije je prejel naziv žlahtnega režiserja, njegova predstava 3JA! pa je po oceni občinstva postala žlahtna komedija. Z režijo lutkovne predstave Seansa Bulgakov Lutkovnega gledališča Ljubljana, v kateri spretno združuje animacije predmetov, senc in luči je osvojil tudi nagrado za najboljšo predstavo na mednarodnem festivalu v Veszpremu.Kandidata sta bila še: Matija Strlič, vodilni avtor prve sistematične raziskave vonjav mumificiranih teles, pri kateri so uporabili različne instrumentalne in senzorične tehnike, vključno z elektronskim "nosom" in izurjenimi človeškimi vohalci. Z raziskovalci ljubljanske Fakultete za kemijo in kemijsko tehnologijo ter kolegi z univerzitetnega kolidža v Londonu so odkrili, da imajo  staroegipčanske mumije vonj po lesu, sladkem in začimbah. Marija Strojnik, znanstvenica in inovatorka, zaslužna profesorica na Optičnem raziskovalnem inštitutu v Leónu v Mehiki, ki se ukvarja predvsem z uporabo optične tehnike pri astronavtiki in raziskovanju vesolja. Za razvoj temeljnih optičnih testnih tehnik ter za akademsko vodstvo na področju optičnega inženirstva so ji pri ameriškem strokovnem združenju za optiko in fotoniko Optica, podelili medaljo Davida Richardsona za leto 2025.

The world of quantum technology is not some science fiction flight of fantasy, it is an exciting field of science which is turning into a rapidly growing engineering sector. You might not know it but you can already buy quantum-dot TVs and mobile phones with quantum-enhanced encryption. Credit: Chris Watt Photography   Quantum engineering is the development of technology that exploits the laws of quantum mechanics (the behaviour of nature at and below the scale of atoms), using it as a toolbox for the development of quantum technologies, such as quantum sensors or quantum computers. There are many devices available which rely on quantum mechanical effects such as medicine, optical communication, high-speed internet, and high-performance computing, just to mention a few examples.       An IBM engineer adjusting on one of the company's quantum computers. Credit: Connie Zhou for IBM   After the technological advances that brought us lasers, MRI imagers and transistors, a second wave of quantum technologies is expected to impact society in a similar way. These new technologies will make use of quantum coherence (the regular and predictable behaviour of atoms), building on the progress achieved in the last century, to enable us to have greater control of these atomic-scale systems.   The burgeoning quantum industry requires a quantum-literate workforce; something that is in short supply at the moment. Those working in the field mainly come from either a physics or engineering background and have acquired their ”quantum engineering skills” by experience. Many of the companies that could benefit from quantum technologies already have a strong presence here in the UK, including those involved in new materials, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy, aerospace, defence and financial services, but what other application will we as engineers be able to use quantum technologies for?       An IBM engineer working on the refrigerator casing inside of which the company plans to install a 1 million-qubit quantum computer by 2030. Credit: Connie Zhou for IBM.   Helen's Guests are Tobias Lindstrom, Head of Science for the department of Quantum Technology at the National Physical Laboratory and Sir Peter Knight, Professor of Quantum Optics and Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London, and principal of the Kavli Royal Society International Centre.   Tobias received his PhD in Physics from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, before joining NPL as a Senior Scientist , then Principal Scientist and now head of department. During his time at NPL, Tobias has primarily worked on superconducting quantum technology.  In addition to conducting research relevant for the emerging superconducting quantum computing sector, he has also pioneered the use of precision frequency metrology methods for the study of noise in superconducting resonators and qubits. Tobias is also part of a global effort to develop international standards for quantum technologies.   Sir Peter is a leading academic in the field of quantum optics and has been described as "one of the UK's most influential scientists and leaders of scientific policy" by his peers. He has been the recipient of several major awards including the Royal Medal from the Royal Society and the Thomas Young Medal from the Institute of Physics. Sir Peter was President of the Institute of Physics from 2011 to 2013 and of Optica; The Optical Society of America and is also a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was also Chief Scientific Advisor until his retirement to the National Physical Laboratory and is Chair of NPL's Quantum Metrology Institute. Quem precisa de óculos para corrigir miopia, astigmatismo, hipermetropia e presbiopia conhece os limites e a dificuldade no uso das lentes de contato. Já os óculos multifocais, apesar de confortáveis, exigem adaptação e a correção nem sempre é perfeita. Mas, um novo tipo de lente de contato poderá resolver esse problema. Ela foi inventada pelo optometrista francês Laurent Galinier, com a colaboração do Centro Nacional de Pesquisas Científicas da França (CNRS).  Taíssa Stivanin, da RFINo início, a ideia de Galinier era ajudar os pacientes que sofrem de uma doença genética chamada Queratocone, que altera a forma da córnea, a enxergar melhor. O especialista francês então inventou uma lente espiral: os feixes de luz giram dentro da lente e criam um vórtice ótico, o que proporciona um foco preciso, independentemente da distância e da claridade.Para aperfeiçoar sua invenção, em 2018 Galinier procurou dois cientistas do CNRS para esclarecer dúvidas em Óptica, a área da Física que estuda os fenômenos associados à luz. Para chegar ao resultado final, a equipe realizou um trabalho de modelização matemática para observar como a luz se propagava, explica Bertrand Simon, que atua no laboratório de Fotônica, Digitalização e Nanociências do CNRS.Esse estudo prévio foi publicado neste ano na revista científica internacional Optica. O protótipo digital das lentes foi produzido por uma empresa especializada, que se associou ao inventor na produção.“Para quem tem presbiopia, e esse é meu caso, usamos lentes multifocais. Dependendo da parte da lente, e da direção do olhar, a correção não será a mesma. Os óculos funcionam, mas há pequenos problemas relacionados à deformação da imagem capturada pela visão”, detalha Bertrand Simon. Durante dois anos, Laurent Galinier e os pesquisadores aprimoraram as lentes espirais. Testadas em 2020, elas criam pontos focais diferentes no campo de visão. Lente multifocais geram deformaçõesO cientista francês explica que a maneira como as lentes multifocais são construídas hoje gera deformações. “Nosso problema é que o olho tem um diafragma, a pupila, que vai abrir e fechar em função da luminosidade. E quando ela abre, ou fecha principalmente, vamos perder a correção do lado externo da lente de contato”, explica. Isso pode ser observado quando a pessoa que usa óculos multifocais olha para o lado ou para cima, por exemplo.O resultado é o surgimento de distorções que podem gerar problemas para dirigir, entre outras dificuldades. “A vantagem da lente que estamos propondo é que criamos uma nova maneira de obter o foco. Isso fará com que todas as zonas de correção, inclusive a externa, sejam capturadas pela lente, independentemente da abertura da pupila. Essa é a grande vantagem. We wrap it up with her project using Raman spectroscopy to help prevent membrane fouling for freshwater generation. Científicos de la Universidad de Viena han logrado invertir por primera vez la dirección del tiempo, en un experimento de física cuántica, un trabajo de demostración llamado protocolo de rebobinado. Los resultados fueron publicados en la revista Optica. RFI conversó con uno de los investigadores que participó en esta hazaña. Lograr invertir el tiempo. Lo que pareciera ciencia ficción, puede ser real en el reino de la mecánica cuántica, donde las reglas no son las mismas y la dirección del tiempo no es la misma que en nuestro mundo e incluso algunos procesos podrían suceder igual "hacia adelante" que hacia atrás. Este concepto de “inversión temporal”, es un campo de estudio para los físicos especializados en la cuántica. Hace un par de años, un equipo de científicos de Rusia consiguió, en una computadora, simular esa inversión temporal, creando un estado en el que, por decirlo de algún modo, la fecha del tiempo iba para atrás. Pero ahora, un equipo de investigadores de la Universidad de Viena ha ido más lejos y acaba de convertir esa simulación en realidad, al lograr devolver un fotón al estado temporal anterior al experimento, es decir, han demostrado que la dirección temporal de los procesos puede invertirse. In Episode 38, we continue our conversation with laser and optics expert Juliet Gopinath, Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Next is her project in multi-photon microscopy and super-resolution imaging. – Pat Chou, Cisco Optics Product Manager Juliet Gopinath is the Alfred T. and Betty E. Look Professor of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering and Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder. She received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at MIT. She was a member of technical staff at MIT Lincoln Laboratory from 2005 to 2009. Since then, she has led a research group at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her current research interests include ultrafast lasers, nonlinear optics, mid-infrared materials, spectroscopy, orbital angular momentum and adaptive optical devices. She has published 78 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 97 conference presentations. She is the recipient of an R&D 100 Award (2012) and is an Optica Fellow. She served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Photonics Society Journal (2011-2017), the Associate Director for Cubit (2019), and currently is an Associate Editor for Optica. Today's guest is KiKi L'Italien, the owner of the consulting firm Amplified Growth; she trains association staff and speaks on a number of topics, particularly trust, community and membership. She helps organizations develop stronger ties between their mission and their members, honing her approach to communications and strategy for many organizations—nonprofits and corporate alike—including Optica, American Red Cross national headquarters, QVC and the American Institute of Architects. KiKi is also a senior consultant with Tecker International and speaks regularly about management strategy, including digital strategy, and cultivating communities of trust. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare auto-immune that can often be confused with more common conditions, like multiple sclerosis.
