The current Ofsted inspection frameworks acknowledge the vital responsibility educational leaders have for the wellbeing of their staff. However, anecdotal evidence from SENCOs in schools and settings suggests they are at particular risk of poor mental health, and that increasing workload over the pandemic has exacerbated this. Angela Scott, Regional Lead for SEND, joins Dale again to discuss ‘Reflections on how to promote positive mental health for SENCOs'. Angela tells us that gaining an awareness of the risks and protective factors linked to the role of SENCO is necessary to ensure stability and job-satisfaction within this important workforce. Angela discusses: What is mental health? International and national research. Mental health in times of crisis; for example, during a pandemic: current research. Schools often invest in professional development to make classrooms dyslexia, autism or speech language and communication ‘friendly'. However, this can overwhelm teachers with too much information, making them feel they can no longer effectively support all of their students' different needs. Angela Scott joins Dale for this week's podcast to discuss ‘The magic of ‘high value' strategies for pupils with SEND in the classroom'. Angela highlights that you can make the lives of teachers manageable by introducing them to relevant ‘high value' teaching strategies, which if implemented will make a positive difference to children and young people with a mix of SEND profiles. Angela reflects on the high incidence of co-occurring SEND profiles experienced by many children and young people. An alternative approach is to stop thinking in silos and to embrace a small but powerful range of strategies, which can make learning possible for pupils with SEND across all four broad areas of need. Listen to find out what strategies work for children with a range of SEND profiles, identify similarities and give SENCOs the tools to unleash these strategies in a way that has meaningful impact. “What are the high value strategies? Not imposing some of those more abstract things that work for us, presuming that the way we see a learning plan or a way to organise ourselves, is the way that every child in our class sees it.” Angela Scott About Angela Scott Angela Scott is the Regional Lead for SEND for the Eastern Partnership UK (SEND) and is programme lead for the National Award for SEN Coordination, Advanced SENCO and SENCOs as Leaders Awards. The Children's Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice (2015) placed great emphasis on the use of person-centred approaches. The concept was embraced but without necessarily being fully explored and accurately interpreted. There is a level of confusion in some schools and settings about how to effectively implement person-centred practices without fully understanding the underlying principles. For SENCOs in particular, these approaches have often become overly bureaucratised. In this week's episode, Angela Scott joins Dale to discuss ‘Person-Centred Approaches: clarity or confusion?'. Angela explores person-centred approaches covering: Concept confusion between pupil voice, pupil participation, pupil engagement and person-centred approaches. Unpicking each to ensure effective use of all. The history and key principles of person-centred approaches. What person-centred approaches can mean for children and young people with SEND and for their families and teachers. Person-centred approaches and potential links to current thinking about metacognition and self-regulation Supporting person-centred approaches through pedagogy and practical tools. Listen to gain a stronger understanding of person-centred approaches to drive positive outcomes for pupils with SEND. “Maybe we think we're just students and we're just learning, but you can have an impact as a medical student,” says Dr. Desiree Franco Lugo, who has acted on that insight throughout her recently completed journey at Anáhuac University, Mexico and during her participation in the Osmosis Medical Education Fellowship, where she has served as a Regional Lead for the past two years. Des, as we've come to know her, has happily embraced one of the most important roles Regional Leads play: being a mentor to fellow med students. “I love talking to them and seeing how they develop and follow their own dreams. I literally feel like a proud mom with them,” she tells host Hillary Acer. Speaking of which, Hillary, as leader of the OMEF program, has the same pride in all that Des has done to support her peers through hosting events, writing blogs, conducting research and so much more. Beyond Osmosis, Des has developed a global footprint in medical education through internships and being selected to participate in prestigious international conferences. All of those experiences have stoked a previously unknown passion for medical education, and given her confidence to pursue other passions for entrepreneurship and leadership. This is an invigorating conversation in our NextGen Journeys series that underscores what can come from jumping at opportunities, or as Des puts it, having an attitude of ‘less fear and more go for it.'Mentioned in this episode: Osmosis Health Leadership Initiative https://www.osmosis.org/community

On today's Raise the Line, we continue our Next Gen Journeys series featuring conversations with learners in medical professions around the globe. Our special guest is Omer Rott, a longtime participant in our Osmosis Medical Education Fellowship and Osmosis Health Leadership Initiative programs. Omer will soon be earning his medical degree from Masaryk University in the Czech Republic. In addition to pursuing a career as a pediatrician, he's an aspiring diversity and inclusion medical educator who has founded DiverseMedEd, an organization dedicated to improving how healthcare professionals interact with and treat patients from different backgrounds. “There is a big gap in medical education about diverse patient populations. I think healthcare providers and many other people are afraid about how to approach someone or how to ask about their situation, which might lead them to not say anything or not even act the way they think they might need to.” Through a website (link) and social media posts, Omer has already built a following, many of whom are patients happy to be seeing these issues addressed. Join host Hillary Acer for a refreshing look at how the healthcare provider community can be more inclusive, and what lessons Omer has drawn from his extensive work mentoring fellow students over the past five years.Mentioned in this episode:DiverseMedEdEquity GraphicElsevier Blog - Is Wearing Pins Appropriate?

It's time for our annual fireside chat with a prominent member of the Guelph community, and since we're run the gamut of local political leaders over the last few years, we turn to the new head of the hospital. It's a massive challenge, but in keeping with the spirit of the season, and the need to help people who can't help themselves, we're going spend Christmas week with the president and CEO of Guelph General Hospital, Mark Walton. Walton hasn't been the head of the Guelph General Hospital for even a year yet, but he had to hit the ground running. He's already appeared at city council twice, once to talk about offload delays at the hospital, and the other to talk about how homelessness and poverty create more work for hospitals as lagging indicators. And then there's the ongoing demand for a new hospital facility, which is complicated, but it's another one of those things that's on Walton's very busy desk. But let's back up for a minute, who is Mark Walton? Before coming to Guelph earlier this year, he served as the Senior Vice-President, COVID-19 Pandemic Response as well as the Regional Lead and CEO of Local Health Integration Networks in the region with Ontario Health. We always associate hospitals with people with stethoscopes, but there are a lot of people with all kinds of experiences and expertise who make hospitals work, and this Christmas, we're going to talk to one of them. So on this holiday edition of the podcast, we sit and chat with Walton about his background, and what brought him to Guelph. We will also talk about where pandemic planning fell short, and the paradox of running a hospital in that you have to make an attractive place that no one wants to visit. He will also talk about the hospital's role in fighting poverty, how fighting the affordability crisis is changing his job, and what the future of Guelph General, and a future Guelph hospital, both look like. So let's spend some quality Christmas time with the head of the hospital on this week's Guelph Politicast! To learn more about Guelph General Hospital, you can go to their website, and you can learn more about fundraising to support the hospital at the website for the Foundation of the Guelph General Hospital. While you're there, you can buy tickets for Black Tie Bingo or take part in some holiday giving. And speaking of which, Merry Christmas to all you listeners. Thanks for tuning in all year and stay tuned as we keep cranking out new episodes over the holidays and on into 2024. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, Google, TuneIn and Spotify. Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.

Interview with Mary Jo Schrade, Assistant General Counsel and Regional Lead for Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) Asia. Disrupting one of the world's most dangerous malware - Trickbot Mary Jo Schrade is an Assistant General Counsel and Regional Lead for Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) Asia and is based at Microsoft's Cyber Security Center in Singapore. She oversees the initiatives, programs and strategies related to Microsoft Asia's efforts to prevent or disrupt organized cybercrime and online tech support scams through public-private partnerships, coordinated enforcement, and customer engagements relating to cyber security and Microsoft's digital trust commitment to its customers. In this podcast, Mary Jo gave highlights of Microsoft's legal action in October 2020 to disrupt Trickbot, one of the world's most pervasive malware families which was behind attacks launched by ransomware groups such as Ryuk. Representing one of the rare cases where the disruption was coordinated by private sector organisations, this involved extensive partnerships around the world with other organisations, including FS-ISAC (financial services information sharing and analysis center), ISPs, and other cybersecurity companies. She also shared some of the key factors and decisions behind the legal strategy, and learning lessons for cyber defenders. For smaller and medium sized organisations in Asia, she stressed that the effectiveness of protective measures, such as multi-factor authentication, cannot be underestimated. So try your best to keep Corp Dev in the loop especially when the deal is scaling.

Alzheimer's disease and dementia are often used interchangeably as many people believe that one means the other. In fact, the distinction between the two diseases often causes confusion for the persons living with dementia, their families and caregivers. Alzheimer's and some types of dementias remain a mystery in many ways. Therefore, the similar changes in the brain are often mixed up in every day conversation and understanding. Two Types of Religion Despite the tremendous diversity in the U.S. religious landscape, there are really only two kinds of religion. Most people practice one or the other, and only one of them leads us to a fuller, deeper, richer experience of life. Our guest preacher is the Regional Lead for the Pacific Western Region of the UUA. The service will make the end of our church school year, with appreciation to all the teachers. Rev. James Kubal-Komoto, Guest Preacher Rev.
