As you might be able to tell, one of us really enjoyed this strip. Today we talk about a summer fair, splat the rat, what looked like a penis, discuss the concept of encouragement once again, and imagine a world where we make a podcast about Peanuts and/or Achewood, two comics that it is actually possible to like. Also, Guy burns his bum off on a scotch bonnet. Then there's Garfield. Great. September 27, 1978 https://www.gocomics.com/garfield/1978/09/27

After collaborating with Kanye West on his cold electro-pop record 808s & Heartbreak, Kid Cudi followed up his megahit debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi with this conceptual arena-rap sad-stoner magnum opus song-cycle. Beloved by the likes of Pete Davidson and Timothee Chalomet, this Common-narrated record went on to inspire a generation of Cudi devotees including Tyler The Creator, Travis Scott and Kevin Abstract with its frank emotional honesty. It's also the 459th Greatest Album of All Time according to Rolling Stone. This week, Christopher and Liam listened to it, and now they're going to talk about it. Featured topics include: the music video for the Crookers remix of Day ‘N' Nite, working in a shoe shop, Kids See Ghosts, Achewood, the subject of mental health in hip-hop, and Henry Winkler. All that plus another installment of Secret Posho in the 42nd complete episode of Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

With this, the fifth short story, we've reached the end of the first act! In Disgrace the Stone, the outlining of which Oliver will share with you, Voe is finally a "hero" as she's struggled to be but the events of this story will change her mind about that being what she wants. The brainstorming for this story involved an unexpected intersection between the webcomic Achewood, Leonard Cohen, and the pandemic (though this isn't a plague story, have no fear). This sent Oliver off on a journey that involved putting the this tale down for an entire year before coming back to finish it, providing unexpected benefits as well as a lesson in why it's important to always make very clear notes so that future-you can easily pick up where they left off...no matter how long it's been. www.soimwritinganovel.com PATREON: www.patreon.com/soimwritinganovel BUY OLIVER'S BOOKS: https://www.oliverbrackenbury.com/store SO I'M WRITING A NOVEL... We return sans Ruben this week for a chill rap sesh about our favorite bygone webcomics, the fruitful era of the early 00's webcomic boom for independent creators and how Eliza ended up in a Jerk City strip. Plus, we talk about Achewood for at least a full half hour. Intro riff selected from "The Mouthwash Years" by Couch Slut. Interstitial music selected from "Workinonit" by J Dilla.

Longtime friend of the show Kel McDonald drops by again this week to talk about her Patreon-exclusive comic You Are the Chosen One, along with werewolves (of course), anxiety, giving up, how many kid characters is too many, and more! Plus, Matt and Chris take an easy Achewood-themed This or That!
We finally had to do it, so we skipped a couple showers, got real, real mad at our parents (and, probably, yours) and went out on the road to discover (how much we hated) America, and to do all of that, we had to start with one simple step: We had to Get in the Van. Henry Rollins' van! It's two men confronting formative influences and finding them ... hoo boy. Everybody's got to come from somewhere, anyway, and if you look back and DON'T think you've grown some, well, that's just a damn' bummer and a shame. As are a lot of the sentiments expressed in this book, a bunch of journal entries from a young man far from home and thoroughly convinced that what the world needs from him is, like, TOTAL AGGRESSION or something (as though the world needs more young white men delivering aggression). Anyway. The style? is run-ons; the content? is Being Real Mad; the effect? is mostly extremely tiring. However, the episode is lots of fun, so grab your journal and your angst and make sure your safety belt is low and snug across your hips, because it's time to ... get in the van. Chris Onstad made webcomic Achewood from 2001 to 2016, a strange, offbeat strip that may not be for everyone, but seems to be for Kumar and Dana, who have spent some time catching up with the strip. They give us their thoughts on the humor, the change in social mores since 2001 that becomes obvious … Continue reading #618 “Achewood”

Money Hell, incipient failure redux, thousands of Achewood references, nerve tonic, Nick calls Keith a goofball, Kyle earnestly researches how to make someone a ward of the state. As a teenager, my only interaction with the world of webcomics was Achewood. Launched in 2001 and published sporadically ever since, Achewood is like Seinfeld crossed with Adult Swim. It felt for me in the early 2000s like this lone, weird thing. A few years later, around when I got my first writing gig, I realized how much bigger webcomics were than the stories of Téodor and Cornelius. I inevitably came across Penny Arcade and the rush of video game-inspired webcomics its inspired. And after that, I found people on Twitter and Tumblr and other platforms, all of whom created beautiful, weird, powerful art. It took me awhile to get into webcomics, but the gradual epiphany is one of the internet’s great pleasure. You look at one star in the sky, and as your eyes adapt to the darkness, you discover this dot is part of a crowded constellation. This week, I invited my friend, colleague, and webcomic artist Dami Lee to talk about the format. Webcomics literally changed the direction of her life. Dave joins us again, to talk about WEBCOMICS - what we like, love, and dislike about the format, why we’re not reading them as much as other comics, and why they can be great for someone starting out with the medium. In a very wide-ranging conversation, we cover Subnormality, XKCD, The Wormworld Saga, The Abaddon, Octopus Pie, Achewood, Oh Joy Sex Toy, and Fascist Friends!
It's the conclusion of the mostly well-received "Zysis" allegory and we find out what's in the box. Join Joe and Chris as they talk about poorly thought-out liberal wet dream scenarios, Achewood, Paranormal Home Investigators (though, often in the singular by mistake), obvious writerly tricks, trigger warnings, Joe's imbalanced affairs and the EMS VCS 3 as well as, of course, turning THE ZYGON INVERSION inside out. www.ehpodcast.com

Welcome to a special "jumped the line" edition of Wait, What?--Wake, What?, wherein Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester pay tribute to the career of the departed member of the Fantastic Four by barely bothering to talk about him at all. Instead, we cover candor in comics interviews and at comics companies, the state of comics journalism, and touch briefly on Achewood, Reid Fleming, and the curious case of Steve Englehart and his Vision and Scarlet Witch miniseries. We hope you enjoy it, and thanks for listening!
