Mission Church of the Nazarene
While Luke is quite clear about many of the factors and characteristics at work in the early church of Acts 2, there is also a universal principle in play that receives no mention. This principle - which operates in both the natural world and spiritual world - is crucial to our ability to experience the abundant life that Jesus promises in the Gospels. Join us this week as we discover this universal principle at its role in our spiritual lives.
There is no doubt that the early church formed a special community – one of great unity, gratitude, and generosity. In this week's message we discover the second of two key characteristics that Luke lays out for his readers in the book of Acts. A characteristic that just might be the key to us experiencing all that God has for us in His Church.
We had a special opportunity this past Sunday. Our special guest John DelHousaye led us through what the New Testament church referred to as a Love Feast - the manner in which they met for worship and fellowship alongside sharing a table and meal together. In this episode, John shares about the nature of these gatherings and what we can glean from them.
Have you ever seen the Disney movie "Finding Nemo?" "Finding Nemo" came out 20 years ago. For those who haven't seen the film in 20 years, it's about an overprotective dad clownfish whose son gets taken from him. The dad goes on the adventure of a lifetime across the ocean, looking for a son.Meanwhile, the lost son finds himself at a dentist's office in Sydney, Australia. The other fish freak out when Nemo, the little fish, is thrown into the fish tank at the dentist's office for the first time. Their home is not sterile anymore. The other fish scrub everything, including Nemo, because their space has been tainted by the ocean. After they clean everything up, they're actually happy Nemo's there. They're excited they've got a new friend in the tank. This scene is fascinating. How often is it that when someone comes into our "circle," we initially freak out? Think about the Christian Church. We have buildings, and they're lovely. Then someone new comes in, and we know we should be excited because we read in the Bible that Jesus is excited. But everything is set up the way it should be to us, and new people mess that up...So we try cleaning the outsider up politically or religiously, or socially. We've got to ensure that they don't say bad words. We've got to verify they're listening to the right music and only watch the TV shows we watch. But that's not how Jesus lived.Jesus is the God of the ocean. Jesus didn't live in a sanitized tank. Jesus went to where all the people were, where life happens. He lived among them, and he did life with them. That is the example we are supposed to follow. And now it's our turn. As we follow Jesus, we're gonna see other people find and follow Jesus. It won't be because any of us are super saints. It'll be because we keep our "circles" open.Do that however long it takes. However long you have to be a friend. And even if they don't choose to follow Jesus at any point, love them anyway because Jesus loves them until the end, even if they reject him. That's the most challenging part of this study. I believe God has put people in and around our lives that he loves deeply and dearly and died for. You don't have to be a super extrovert. There are many people in our lives whom Jesus loves and has been working through. Our task is to keep our "circles" open.Think about your family "circle." It's always open. Somebody has a new baby, gets married, or gets divorced. It's a changing "circle." As a spiritual family, MC should be an ever-changing, open "circle." "Circles" should not be closed. As we continue to move away from the pandemic, we must re-emphasize the importance of going out and getting together during the week. Reach out to someone and get together. And if or when you do, you're doing things God wants you to do.Some people don't know about Madison Church, but they know you and, more importantly, trust you. People need to learn about what we have to offer. How will you use your influence? Will you show them that it is possible to have a positive experience in a church community? If we do this, well, by this time next year, by this time next month, there will be people experiencing community who are lonely today.Think about the "tank" you live in and how you have worked hard to keep it clean and organized with your values. I want you to get out of the tank and back into the ocean where you belong because Jesus is the God of the ocean.Support the show
Finding the liberating constraints--rescue, repair, restoration When we become Christ followers, devotion to God's community is not optional. "Me" mentality = remain unfree "We" becomes greater--we are better together. The Truth will set you free.
Human activities require human presence. Non-participation can be habit-forming. Two kinds of groups: (1) Those who gather together (2) Those who form the habit of not meeting together
I talk with Jeff Brown, preacher for the Woodmont Hills Church in Nashville, about "Project 245" which had at its heart Acts 2:45 - "and [believers] sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need." (NKJV) This project was formed during the early days of the pandemic. People would donate their stimulus checks and other funds to the project, and then the church would give the money to people in crisis.  May you be inspired to give and/or to help lead your church in giving by this interview. Through the table of the Lord we proclaim in his presence and in his power, remembering whose we are and where we're from.
We have been exploring four ancient practices of the church. These were practices the church persisted in day by day. They were the devotions of the first church. In this message we explore the pairing of the four practices. Luke writes of two pair of practices. How are we to understand these two sets of community devotions?
When the first followers of Jesus asked him to teach them to pray, he did. Plus he encouraged persisting in the prayer he taught them by telling them a parable. How can we learn to pray with persistence?
When did people following Jesus begin to pray? What is our history for praying?
In a time of uncertainty we need to persist in time honored practices that bring stability to our community life. One of those practices is persisting in the teaching of the Apostles. Who were the Apostles and what did they teach? We have much to learn.
Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, seeks to be a church that's Becoming Community in Christ. Our senior pastor Rev. Craig Bailey continued in our Means of Grace sermon series focusing this week again on prayer. Pain and disappointment are part of our lives, often because of unmet expectations. God is the one with whom we're disappointed, and prayer is the thing with which we're disappointed. Let us not be rendered prayerless in our lives because of our discouragements. The early church was devoted to prayer, and Jesus' prayer in John 11 at Lazarus' tomb shows us where to take our disappointment.
In these uncertain and trying times we as a community want to persist in pr Actives that have servers the church well since its beginning. This morning we will focus on the common meal, the breaking of bread.

Today, Pastor Marc Sharp concludes the two-part series about the tools through which God most commonly brings about his will, and distributes his grace in our lives. This message looks more closely at two additional "ordinary" means of grace that we must utilize: the sacraments (baptism and the Lord’s Supper), and the church, while also looking more deeply into the role of the Holy Spirit in all of this. NOTE: Due to technical difficulties, there is an approximate 3 minute gap in the audio around the 30 minute mark. Pastor Matthew and Pastor Wade continue our Master Ship Builder series with this sermon on Fellow"ship". One of the foundational principles that we learn from Acts 2:42 is to be devoted to the Apostles' doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer. Our pastors challenge us with not only the necessity of fellowship but with the Biblical benefits of fellowship. The power and benefit of fellowship cannot be understated. Fellowship for the believer is like the sail of a great ship. We must learn to raise our sails, become ever more tightly knit together, close the gap and have the wind of the Holy Spirit fill our sails and move us to carry His Kingdom to the world!

As we continue to discuss church membership, David Higgins examines it in light of the biblical concept of fellowship.
We begin a series on church membership. Today, we will look at how devotion is the key concept in understanding church membership.
This sermon examines what made the people be "in awe"? What exactly does a church do that inspires awe? This sermon will look at the first of the four practices the church is to be devoted to in order to be a truly "awesome" church.
This sermon looks at the importance of knowing who we are as a church before we attempt to invite others to come and see what God is doing in and through us. We will see that we must be a people who are devoted to each other and the things of God.
Devotion is love, passion, and discipline all wrapped up into one package. Prayer is the venue in which God makes Himself vulnerable to our requests. Devotion to prayer is about communion with God, Co-creating with God, and covering others.
