Breakdancing--or breaking--is the new sport at the Paris 2024 Olympics. If you're like Jill, you're mesmerized by it but can't figure out how it's judged. What are they looking for, and how does a b-boy or b-girl win?   Lucky for us, we've got breaking icon--and judge for Paris 2024--Ivan "Flipz" Velez joining us to break it down for us. Flipz talks about the culture of breaking within hip hop and its evolution to an Olympic sport. He also points out what breaking judges look for during a battle. Surprisingly, it's not like other judged sports, but once Flipz breaks it down for us (get it?!), it's a lot easier to watch a battle and see for yourself.   Learn more about Flipz at his website, and follow him on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X.   We also hear from Bboy Jeffro, who we spoke with at the Team USA Media Summit. He's got some interesting thoughts about flexibility and the differences between b-boy and b-girl battles. The maltreatment of African house helps in the Middle East has caused a lot of outrage among most Africans and rightly so but we at Wahaala wanted to shed light on the plight of our local house helps or maids. The stories you hear from our Cameroonian and Ghanaian sisters who went to Kuwait, Jordan and some other middle eastern countries is just sad. From tales of rape, physical abuse and forced imprisonment, these women suffer a lot on the hands of their employees but are their struggles and experiences very different from the maids back in their countries? Anyway listen to the wahaala boys take and please do share with your friends.

At the start of 2015 Innervisions released a new EP from Rancido, a relatively unknown producer who, up to that stage, only had a handful of releases to his name. 'The Journey' EP featured 4 beautifully crafted tracks, showcasing Rancido's penchant for longing melodies and soft beats. It's these soft rhythms that demand the most attention; listen closely, tucked away between the grooves you'll notice the gentle pulse of Africa-influenced percussive flair. Taking inspiration not just from the mother continent, the Rotterdam-based producer's first release was a track called 'Salsa Sundae', more evidence that the producer favours interesting rhythms over the more standard house structures. His predilection for loose percussion were always going to attract interest from a certain sect within the industry, and, true to form, he has worked with acts and brands who favours a bit of swing in their music: Black Coffee, Louie Vega, Boddhi Satva and DJ Gregory are just some of the names he has collaborated or worked with. With such a wide ranging interest in different rhythms, and his ability to craft a 10/10 melody, it's easy to see why Rancido would be picked up by one of the most important labels going around. But don't expect this podcast to be a throwback to early African House, his mix is as contemporary as any of our past mixes: Rancido has put together a masterful journey which features as much brood as it does interesting drum patterns....
