Today, we're joined by Aija Mayrock, a bestselling author, poet, and performer who was bullied as a child and lives, now, to help alleviate that pain from future generations. Her story starts with her most impressionable years spent suffering in silence, mocked for speech impediments, a lisp and a stutter, and experiencing cyberbullying and harassment seeded by a social post by someone she'd never even met. We learn that even her teachers sometimes took part in the abuse. The starting blocks of her pain-to-purpose journey illustrate the extreme toxicity of mob mentality alongside the dangers of social media exposure. Aija talks about how she was hesitant to stand up for herself, and that her mother encouraged her to be brave and share her story – leading to her first book, The Survival Guide to Bullying – to help other kids who were struggling as she had.She encourages parents to recognize the signs of bullying in their kids, such as changes in eating habits, downward trending grades, withdrawn behavior, and altered body language. She suggests asking questions to help kids open up and start communicating more freely and openly. But first, we open up this episode with a poem that Aija wrote and recites so eloquently. It's called, Who Do You Want to Be? And it is a powerful note to remember.Resources:Follow Aija Mayrock on Instagram: @aijamayrockFollow Aija Mayrock on TikTok: @aijamayrockWebsite: aijamayrock.comRead: The Survival Guide To Bullying (Revised Edition): Written by a TeenRead: Dear GirlRead: The Big Silence: A Daughter's Memoir of Mental Illness and Healing Follow Karena Dawn on Instagram: @karenadawnFollow The Big Silence on Instagram: @The.Big.SilenceSubscribe: The Big Silence YouTube ChannelDonate to The Big Silence thebigsilence.com/donate to be a part of the movement to break the silence and make noise with us!“The Big Silence” theme song written and performed by James Nicholas Kinney.Executive Handyman, Bobby Goldstein. The Big Silence is produced by Crate Media.

Get ready to meet world changer, poet, writer and celebrated spoken word performer, Aija Mayrock who was just highlighted by Katie Couric for Mental Health Awareness Month. Aija is the young author of two best selling books: “The Survival Guide to Bullying” to help girls like herself which was published by Scholastic when she was 19. This young role model has a new debut book of poems called “Dear Girl,” an empowering, lyrical journey exploring truth, silence, wounds, healing and the resilience we all share. It’s a journey from girlhood to womanhood through poetry, a love letter to the sisterhood. “Dear Girl, you ask me what I wish for you. I simply say- never allow anyone to clip your wings, You were not born an ember, you were born the flame." As Forbes says of the 25-year-old phenom, “with hundreds of thousands of social media followers, Aija uses writing and performing to connect, educate and advocate." Aija was a tomboyish creative child who had a lisp and a stutter. From the ages of 8-16 Aija was bullied at school and then when she went home she was tortured online. Kids would push her into lockers and tell her that she was disgusting, fat, and that she should kill herself. Aija put pen to paper and her raw and visceral writing became a life-changing outlet. Aija shares, “As a teenager I learned about stories of young people all around the world taking their lives because of bullying. I began to write about my own experiences so I could help other people. I never envisioned the big impact my book and poetry would have. I was hoping to help one or two young people to show them suicide is not the answer; you can get through this if you learn to advocate for yourself and find help. It's been very gratifying to receive messages from young people all around the world telling me that my poetry helps them understand and feel heard. Vulnerability breeds vulnerability.” Aija has performed her original poetry at Madison Square Garden and the UN. Her charisma and power are electrifying! Aija has a social media platform of over a half of a million followers and she shares new poetry and work every week which garners millions of views, inspiring women all around the world to embrace their voice and step into their power. Hear Aija perform her poem “Wounds like Crown Jewels” and find out what’s next for this exciting young artist.
Aija Mayrock was a young girl with a speech impediment who was bullied, even told to “kill herself,” but now she’s a 25 year old spoken word poet who has shared her words with over four million people. Aija is a humble soul who is sharing the experience of girlhood to womanhood and finding your voice with her latest book, Dear Girl. We talk about vulnerabilty breeding vulnerabilty, and about the power of not just having a voice, but using your voice. Writing became her outlet for safe expression when speaking up failed her, but as an adult, she’s taking her power back by speaking up and sharing the truth of her written word. We talk the power of embodied words, why she chose the term “girl” versus woman in her book title, and how you can be afraid and do it anyways. We also discuss how we tend to blame ourselves or avoid asking for help because we assume that we must be doing something wrong. She talks about how she broke that cycle, and we discuss healing the little girl in all of us. Finally, we talk beauty privilege and self care as allowing yourself to grow. And about halfway through the episode, Aija shares a piece called “Wounds Like Crowned Jewels” that had me smirking up a storm! ----------------------Connect with Alyssa @alyssakuzins on Instagram. For Aija's book and show notes head to alyssakuzins.com/aija-mayrockGot a minute? Aija Mayrock, the #1 best selling author of Survival Guide to Bullying shares her journey of how she received her first book deal and discusses how she harnesses her creative power, turns passion into purpose by averaging her platform for activism and channels art as a form of expression and release.
In today's episode I talk about a rather serious topic, it is all about Mental Health. I've been talking about physical and mental health often throughout previous episodes, but in light of the #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek and #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, I wanted to dedicate an entire episode on this important topic. To openly share information and keep the conversation going. Despite it being talked about already in a much more openly fashion in the media and amongst each other over the recent few years, I do feel that the stigmata around mental health is still existing and needs to be eliminated fully. But mental health illnesses don't appear overnight. They are slowly sneaking up on you and if you are not aware of your changes in your thoughts or your behaviour then you will only realises your issues when it is too late and you are in the middle of it already. What I would like to urge you to do is to educate yourself about the topic. That you get to know yourself better and truly make your thoughts conscious and therefore recognise early on when things take a more negative effect and your thoughts are going down the rabbit hole. That way you can start to prevent them. Listen to the full episode to hear more about the 5-min exercise that can shift your mindset and breaks the vicious cycle of negative self-talk. At the very end I also leave you with a powerful and hopefully inspirational words by Aija Mayrock.
