Are you aware that your assumptions, beliefs and personal biases towards metrics, numbers, KPIs and other data may damage your treatment outcomes with certain patients? My guest, Joel Lindner from Studio Podiatry in Brisbane, believes numbers are fundamental in health care and evidence-based practice, and I wholeheartedly agree. University Lecturers Tell Lies We have all heard stories from students about lecturers warning them about employers who want to measure numbers and keep metrics on their employees' performance (KPIs), almost to the point of frightening the students before they even graduate, which makes no sense because universities and lecturers do the same thing through exams. An exam is merely a performance review. Your lecturers want to know that you have listened, studied, and understood the content. They want you to be competent so you don't hurt anyone, and good employers want the same for you and their patients. More Education is Needed in the Industry The podiatry profession needs to understand better why numbers and metrics are essential. Wouldn't you like to know if you're doing a great job, and if you're not doing well, have an opportunity to get better so you don't end up in front of the registration board? Underservicing Patients A lot of podiatrists have a fear of being seen as overserving patients, but what about underservicing? Underservicing seems to be a bigger problem in podiatry, and often it comes down to a lack of good communication skills. Numbers and metrics (KPIs) are used to help with your communication. Competitive People Love Numbers A-Type Players like numbers and metrics because they are usually on a continual path of self-improvement. C-Type Players reject them because it makes them uncomfortable and highlights their deficiencies. B-Type Players can become A-Type Players once they better understand numbers and how to use them to improve their performance. Who Do You Want in Your Team? If you put an A-Type Player in a business team, productivity will be lifted by 30% by the whole team; however, if you put a C-Type Player in a business team, the opposite occurs, and productivity drops by 40%. That's a massive difference. Assumptions Knowing your numbers takes away assumptions of care and instead leads us to facts of care. It changes possible outcomes to probable outcomes. You can't get a PhD without knowing the numbers and having data to prove or disprove a theory, yet some lecturers with PhDs will say employers shouldn't use them. That makes no sense. If you don't reappoint a patient for a review visit, and they never return, you cannot assume you've fixed them, and believing you have because they didn't come back without any evidence they are better is arrogant. It may also reinforce inaccurate beliefs about rebooking patients. The truth may be the opposite. You did not help them, and they have gone elsewhere for treatment. We've all had patients tell us this. Changing Beliefs If you think numbers, metrics and KPIs are evil, you should stop and ask yourself WHY you feel this way and consider where your beliefs have come from. Did they come from family, friends, past employers, lecturers or your own experiences? Then, start searching for new information. Beliefs can change quickly when further information and evidence is presented. Look for information that proves and disproves your current beliefs. For example, some podiatrists would have no idea why they charge what they do and when you challenge them to increase their fees, their beliefs jump to the forefront, and they will tell you why their patients cannot afford it. Is it true? Can they not afford it, or is it just a belief? KPIs Remove Biased Beliefs And Assumptions If you have a team of podiatrists and your KPIs show that, on average, each patient pays $100 per visit, KPIs will shine a light on an under-performer who is averaging only $60 per patient, and they allow you to catch this before it gets out of hand. Assuming a patient cannot afford specific treatments and making the decision for them is not allowing the patient to have informed decision-making. The most expensive belief system in your life is the one that costs you money. They won't rebook because…. There are 75 million Americans over the age of sixty, many of them looking to continue the personal growth journey that has been the hallmark of their generation. They want to grow old, not just get old. The path of purposeful aging is accessible to all - and it's fundamental to health, happiness, and longevity. Just floating along from one year to the next, accepting things as they present themselves without question or intention, is a surefire recipe for dissatisfaction and despair in later life. The traditional milestones of old age - retirement, the death of one's parents, grandchildren, etc., are no longer definitive of what it means to be old. It's more about choices; we're freer now to decide for ourselves what being old means and how we intend to live our later years. But that requires us to confront default choices and reject easy answers. It means exploring tough questions like, "Am I living my life or someone else's version of it?" and "What's missing in my life?"Discovering who you want to be when you grow old starts first with determining your purpose. The purpose is a verb; it is action-oriented and dynamic. It answers the question, "Why do you get up in the morning?" If there's something you love to do - write, solve technical problems, or cook - that is likely one of the gifts you need for your purpose. When you combine that gift with your passions and values, that can be an indicator of your purpose. In this episode, you'll discover the three-step framework for unlocking purposes: Find out how you want to helpFind out who you want to helpFind out what energizes you (and what drains you).About Richard Leider:Internationally bestselling author and coach Richard Leider is the founder of Inventure-The Purpose Company, whose mission is to help people "unlock the power of purpose" and answer that question. Today, we're joined by Aija Mayrock, a bestselling author, poet, and performer who was bullied as a child and lives, now, to help alleviate that pain from future generations. Her story starts with her most impressionable years spent suffering in silence, mocked for speech impediments, a lisp and a stutter, and experiencing cyberbullying and harassment seeded by a social post by someone she'd never even met. We learn that even her teachers sometimes took part in the abuse. The starting blocks of her pain-to-purpose journey illustrate the extreme toxicity of mob mentality alongside the dangers of social media exposure. Aija talks about how she was hesitant to stand up for herself, and that her mother encouraged her to be brave and share her story – leading to her first book, The Survival Guide to Bullying – to help other kids who were struggling as she had.She encourages parents to recognize the signs of bullying in their kids, such as changes in eating habits, downward trending grades, withdrawn behavior, and altered body language. She suggests asking questions to help kids open up and start communicating more freely and openly. But first, we open up this episode with a poem that Aija wrote and recites so eloquently. It's called, Who Do You Want to Be? I've titled this episode ' Who Do You Want to BE?' because we are that person now, today. So often we live our lives thinking about the future and we plan for a time that life lands in our lap but its happening. It's happening NOW.So who do you want to BE? What is your purpose and what is it that you are allowing to take you out go the game and what is preventing you from moving forward with your goals? So often it's the opinions of others. You're stronger than that. People will have an opinion but when you realise that what they say about you says more about them and their own self doubts than it does about you - that's when the game changes. So who do you want to BE? Now.I hope you love this episode, if you did I'd love you to share it on social media. You'll find me on instagram @megmcleanuk and @shecanpodLoads of Love,Meg x

We talk a lot about creating your Encore Career on the podcast: how will you transfer your skills and what will you do? As you can see, most of what we talk about is related to the question of “what.” However, today's episode will be a little different. We're going to discuss who you want to be when you grow old. This discussion is based off a book by Richard Leider and David Shapiro. I was introduced to Richard by Modern Elder Academy. We went through several sessions together and had many conversations about purpose, especially purpose later in life. One of the common themes we came back to over and over again is that purpose ties in with mindset. This is one of the first areas we talk about in the process of creating an Encore Career as well. We must do some hard work on our mindset to start navigating the path towards purposeful aging. In today's episode, I'm going to talk about this path, how mindset is related to purpose and creating an Encore Career, and more from Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old? We'll dive deeper into these concepts: Why the path to purposeful aging is personal, not prescriptive. How aging is a journey. Why getting old doesn't disqualify you from being useful. Why the language we use to describe ourselves is important. The difference between growing old and getting old. You're a human being, not a human doing. Why you should consider the legacy you're leaving behind. Parker Palmer's two questions. The ultimate conversation you must have with yourself. I am incredibly excited today to be speaking with Donna Zajonc, Director of Coaching for The Center for The Empowerment Dynamic. Today's episode is packed with so much helpful information, including tips and tools, that are very much needed by coaches in order to improve and grow. Donna has a new book out entitled, Who Do You Want to Be on the Way to What You Want? Coaching with the Empowerment Dynamic. I am so fortunate to be able to have Donna on today's episode to share some of the many wonderful resources from her book. As many of you may remember, Donna was on the show previously in https://podcasts.captivate.fm/media/96dac2cc-fd2b-421b-aed1-887c2ab6ff38/ep42donnazajonc.mp3 (Episode 42) and again, in https://podcasts.captivate.fm/media/af966b6e-cc8c-4934-a9f0-eaa9e99bf053/ep44donnazajonc.mp3 (Episode 44). If you missed her, please take time to listen to those episodes as well. Show Highlights: Donna shares what she's been up to lately including working full-time in coach training, education, and writing about The Empowerment Dynamic. Showing up for your clients is something Donna speaks about in her book, Who Do You Want to Be on the Way to What You Want? Coaching with the Empowerment Dynamic. Donna shares how we can/should activate our inner observer to self-observe during the moment in order to better serve our clients. Donna shares that by practicing, “I can create what I want in this moment, I can learn to be a challenger, and I can learn to coach” we are using 3 important rules of The Empowerment Dynamic. Meg encourages each of us to tap into ourselves, as coaches, in order to learn what triggers us. Notice and name it, along with having self-compassion are two important tools coaches should have in their toolboxes and are discussed by Sophia and RJ, two characters in Donna's book. Being real and authentic, according to Donna, can be transformative. True inquiry is inquiring into the not knowing space, according to Donna. Tell 3 Stories, is a technique coaches can use with clients to enable them to broaden their perspectives. Donna uses this as an example with characters in her book. Donna says we can all learn a lesson from Sophia, a character in her book, when she is finally able to make friends with herself. Meg and Donna agree that becoming the most enlightened and best coaches we can be is paramount. “If we focus on goals alone, without being tethered into this beingness, [it] can activate and trigger us, and we see those goals as our persecutor…‘Was the goal big enough? Did I do it fast enough?' So the goal-setting can actually become a persecutor. And in our own mind, we feel victim to that.” – Donna Zajonc Are your goals also your persecutor? Working toward a goal or vision is important - but how often do we pay as much attention to the person that we're being while in that pursuit, as the pursuit itself? It's easy to get caught up in the goal without placing attention on who we are along the way. However, without tending to ourselves we can feel trapped by our own goals and wonder if we're living up to the standards we've set. Distress and reactive behaviors follow. Donna Zajonc covers this topic in her new book, Who Do You Want to Be on the Way to What You Want. Alongside her partner, David Emerald, they've developed a framework for recognizing and responding more intentionally when life throws us a curve ball. We learn to move out of the toxicity of the Dreaded Drama Triangle (DDT), and how to reorient ourselves with the The Empowerment Dynamic (TED). We'll discuss her new book, along with 3 powerful practices for you to use to look inward, spur creativity and conquer stress. Tangled up in your emotions? Notice and name [00:28:21] “When we notice and name something, we are now able to see it and hold it in our hand and go, ‘Oh, look at that.' We're not as enmeshed into it, so we're not subject to it. It's really a powerful psychodynamic thing that's going on, that allows us to have it and not be it…when we can do that, our body starts calming down.” Stuck? Tell 3 stories [00:30:50] “When we're really stuck and attached to a particular point of view, we're constricted in our bodies, our minds are constricted - and we are totally lost to the creativity of any other possibility. So we literally must broaden our perspective. That's really hard to do when we're stuck in one perspective. The practice of the possibility of telling three stories [helps you realize] there's even more going on here than I realized.” Create space and see what space creates [00:39:24] “[Leaders often feel they] need to be able to tell people more ideas about how to fix this or be that. And it's actually the opposite - to let go of needing to have the answers and to create a safe space for others to step into their genius, their creator, their sense of who do they want to be. … Let's take a timeout let's breathe, let's calm ourselves, and trust that our wisdom is going to rise if we can calm ourselves.” Resources: Donna Zajonc donna@theempowermentdynamic.com, Who do You Want to Be on the Way to What You Want? https://bookshop.org/a/16835/9781733678100 Center for the Empowerment Dynamic: https://www.theempowermentdynamic.com/ Link to coach training in May 2022: https://www.theempowermentdynamic.com/coaching-2/ Episode 51 Focus 2022: From Surviving to Thriving with 3 Vital Questions (Replay from February 2020): https://rise-leaders.com/podcast/ Rise Leaders YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKZAhRU1iLsXYwpvCECVreg To discuss executive coaching, leadership development program design, and workshop facilitation, please visit: https://rise-leaders.com/contact-info/

Episode Guest: Richard Leider, founder of Inventure -The Purpose Company, one of American's preeminent Executive-Life Coaches. He is a pioneer of the global purpose movement who focuses on purposeful living.Episode Description: What are we to do to survive and, even, thrive in this volatile, uncertain pandemic world? How can we find some sense of certainty in a world where we can no longer be secure or confident? The pandemic changed everything for almost everyone. We endlessly hear the downside of this crisis. That's one way to look at it but, there is also an upside. We can grow from this crisis. The science of purpose shows that having a WHY to exist, whatever the level of adversity we face, is universal and fundamental to both surviving and thriving. Purpose is NOT a trend nor a luxury today. In fact, it is FUNDAMENTAL to our health, healing, happiness, community, and, even, longevity! What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning? These days the answer to that question might seem more difficult than ever to answer.During this episode, you will:Take a "Purpose Checkup"Experience three steps to unlocking your purposeLearn three practices to live and work in ways that fit with your purposeAbout Richard Leider:Internationally bestselling author and coach Richard Leider is the founder of Inventure-The Purpose Company. Achieving a great age, with good health and vitality, is at the heart of everything we discuss on this podcast. But who are we, as human beings? What is our purpose and what is the difference between getting old and growing old? Richard Leider, founder of Inventure – The Purpose Company, is one of America's preeminent executive-life coaches. He has spent a lifetime trying to better understand the components of life that really matter. His book, Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old? dissects the aging path, from adulthood to elderhood. In this LLAMA podcast interview with Peter Bowes, Richard explains why we should feel liberated by the process, rather daunted or hostile, and how purposeful aging - a reason to get up in the morning - is accessible to all. Recorded: Sept 27, 2021 | Transcribed using Sonix at the LLAMA podcast website. The Live Long and Master Aging podcast, a HealthSpan Media LLC production, shares ideas but does not offer medical advice. If you have health concerns of any kind, or you are considering adopting a new diet or exercise regime, you should consult your doctor.
Today, Debbie talks with Richard Leider about aging with purpose, the fallacy of "finding" your purpose, and how to practice daily. Richard is considered a pioneer of the global purpose movement. Yes, the "purpose movement" is a thing. The topic of finding meaning and purpose has come up repeatedly on this podcast. It's key to a life well-lived, we've been told. But how DO you live a life of purpose? Are there any shortcuts or secrets? That's what Debbie wanted to find out from Richard.Richard Leider is the author of 11 books, many of which have been bestsellers, and recently co-authored the book "Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old? The Path of Purposeful Aging." He's very much on the right path for himself. At 77, he's working, writing, and still, happily, honing his own purpose. Together, they talk about the idea of purpose in elder hood, and why it is crucial to longevity. They discuss purpose as a verb: it's not something you find but it's something you “do” via purposeful living. Richard shares his story of a profound encounter with author and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl in 1968 and how that unlocked his lifelong fascination with purpose. They also get into what he calls in his book the Ultimate Conversation - the one about death that you should have with your family but also with yourself. And Richard shares what he does everyday to practice being purposeful. This might be the secret, if there is one. This is a great conversation with a man who is truly living what he talks and writes about. "Even motivational speakers need motivation. What motivates them?... Successful people execute. They are results-driven. They are not looking for motivation, they look for results. And the results are gritty, grimy, and dirty. And you have to get your hands muddy sometimes." -Tony Whatley What you can achieve in life depends on who you are and your willingness to walk the hard path. And in order to win the battle, you have to be that person who has the heart, not of a quitter, but that of a winner! This week, The Daniel Gomez Inspires Show brings to you a special episode with a special guest, Tony Whatley- the man behind 365 Driven and bestselling author of SideHustle Millionaire. This book is more than a book of wisdom, but an actual, genuine story- Tony's story. In this episode, Tony relates his own share of fears, challenges, and criticisms received from other people. More importantly, Tony reveals how he found the courage to fight for his thoughts, how he ignites his drive even if he finds himself not liking what he does (at times), the importance of being you and not bargaining yourself for what you can become, and finally, how you can keep yourself motivated to continue reaching out for a higher level of success. Become a free-thinker. Quit trying to dilute yourself with what others say about you. Because at the end of the day, your success and the value you can give to others is what will define you. Like Tony says, "Your strategic advantage lies in knowing that other people will quit, but NOT YOU!" Confidence is defined as a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities. But confidence can be elusive. Who's the say the moment you ‘get' confidence. And it can be difficult to pinpoint just exactly how to get it. Here are 5 of my 10 best tips to amp up your confidence and shine your light. 1/ Decide The most critical factor to changing anything in your life. 2/ Myth Busting We're going to discover all the reasons you ‘can't' be confident. These reasons are just opinions, not facts. They are simply not true. 3/ Who Do You Want to Be? Create the image of the woman you see for yourself so that you can start to become her. 4/ Stop the Comparison Trap Comparison is the thief of joy. See how destructive this dirty little habit can be and how it's keeping you small. 5/ Words of Affirmation Thoughts are things and what you say to yourself on a regular basis makes a difference. Let's shift that to create the positive outcome you desire. Today my good friend Chris Shaffer and I are talking about how to drive traffic to your Amazon products using Facebook Ads, and we’ll give our honest opinion about when it can be valuable and when it might not be beneficial. Let’s dive right in. Are Facebook Ads Worth It? This conversation will be focused on talking about making Facebook ads to sell products within the Amazon eco-system. Note: Don’t utilize Facebook ads until you’ve made sure to maximize the resources that Amazon has already provided to you. You’ll end up getting more bang for your buck by taking advantage of using Amazon advertising. When people are on Amazon, they’re on the search to buy something. So when you spend your advertising dollars there, you have more of a chance to make a sale. Whereas people on Facebook aren’t necessarily looking to buy something and it might be difficult to convince them to buy your product from an ad if they’re not actively looking to buy a similar product. There may be times that you can’t make the pay per click platform on Amazon work for you or if you’re at the “point of no return” and have spent all you can advertising on Amazon and it’s no longer leading to sales it might be a good time to look at how you can get external traffic. Keep in mind that Amazon doesn’t necessarily prefer external traffic. It actually converts at a much lower rate if you’re not already optimized within Amazon, and it will negatively affect how you rank organically if you’re conversion is really low from external traffic. Use Facebook Ads As a Secondary Marketing Tool However, there is something to be said about being on the same playing field as your competition. If everyone is selling on Amazon and using the same strategy and set of resources and tools, it might be hard to stand out. When you add the external side and learn how to incorporate it and make it work, you might just be able to get a leg up from your competition and leverage your rankings. The key is that it’s an addictive piece of marketing. You need to make sure that you have a solid foundation first. The most qualified traffic does exist on Amazon, so exhaust all your efforts there first before paying for additional traffic. You can also use your email list or other free sources, but just don’t pay for any more traffic until you’ve all you can internally first. Two Ways to Drive Traffic From Facebook to Amazon There are two main ways that you can bring people to your Amazon product by using Facebook Ads. Although we strongly recommend the second option we’ll cover both. Sending Ad Traffic Directly to Your Amazon Ad This is usually not a recommended method for three mani reasons. Driving people who are looking at say cat videos to go and buy cat liter can be a tough sell since they weren’t planning to make a similar purchase. This creates a low conversation rate. You’ll never have a chance to talk to any of the people you advertise to again or if they end up going to Amazon and abandon their carts before they make a purchase you have no way of getting in front of them again unless they happen to see your ad for a second time. It’s hard to track what traffic and sales you’re getting from Facebook and where they are coming from. We can look at it from a correlation point of view, but it’ll be hard to see the cost of each sale. If you create a storefront on Amazon, you can create custom URLs and can track how many people purchase your product from the Facebook link. This makes it easier to track conversation rates. Create Your Own Landing Page ConvertKiit has a great landing page feature, and Giveaway Boost works great too. You can run Facebook Ad for your product and can visitors to a custom landing page. This way, you’ll be able to collect their email address and now have a targetable audience you can reach out to in the future. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to do the task that you want them to complete. By creating a landing page, you’re able to take advantage of all the cool features inside Facebook ads like conversion optimization, which is the secret sauce behind the most successful Facebook ad campaigns. You’ll choose the targeted audience that you’re looking for. You can’t do that if you drive traffic directly to Amazon. You can also go back later and see what other types of products people who bought your product be interested in. Does It Make Sense to Use Facebook Ads For a Single Product If you only have one product to sell it might not be worth doing Facebook ads. You’ll lose money If you only have one product to sell, it might not be worth doing Facebook ads. You’ll lose money or break even to get data, and it’s a lot of planning to get it to where your product is profitable. Paid traffic makes it hard if you’re just selling one product. If you have a reorder product, it makes more sense to advertise on Facebook or if you have multiple products. You can always send out emails or create ads that feature your additional products for those who have already purchased it with you before. If you lose money on a reorder product during the first sale, chances are you’ll make more when that person purchases again because you’re not paying to get their business the second time around. Note: Always maximize your advertising efforts on Amazon before creating Facebook Ads for your products. You also need to have a good grasp on Amazon pay per click before you move on to Facebook ads. If, for some reason, that isn’t going to work or it’s not doable in your category, then go to Facebook ads. It’s an easier conversion because people are already there looking for things to buy, and there are fewer moving parts you need to worry about. Learn the Game to Drive More Sales First and foremost, you have to figure out how to market your products on Amazon if you want to make sales. This is the most important part of your business. We always talk about building an email list and creating content because if you can get good at that part of the process, you’ll be in a good position. Your product needs traffic for you to sell. You can drive traffic fast with Facebook ads, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll convert that traffic. You may not make money on your first sale, but if you create content, you’ll be able to make a profit much quicker. Always look at the big picture and analyze what other products or services your customers need and how you can create additional offerings to help them out. The goal is to drive people to a piece of content or product that you can control. Giveaway Boost is a great plugin and gives you the formula to make this successful. You can create a page with an offer that you can control. It’s easy for people to signup and get a coupon code once they have. The best part is you can target those people later and create an email list and communicate. What to Ask Before Creating Your Facebook Ad There are a few things you should take into consideration before moving forward with creating your Facebook Ads. Let’s review those now. How Do You Want to Run the Ads The most successful approach is to create your own landing page. You’ll also need to establish who your target audience is and decide what offer you’ll give when they come to your landing page. You need to have this all figured out before you can set up your ad and get it ready to go. You could also consider leading the Facebook ad with an informational freebie like a checklist, download, or guide related to your product niche. On your thank you page, you could have a discount for your product. This way, you’re giving something valuable before asking them to buy something. It's an effective marketing tool. Who Do You Want to See Your Ads If you want to target existing customers, you can download your customer list from Amazon. If you go this route giving a coupon can be effective since they’ve already purchased from you. If you’re not using existing customers and go into broad targeting, it makes more sense to use a giveaway or to provide something an informational freebie and then make the sale on the backend once you’ve cultivated and built the relationship. Always test it to see which works best for your market and brand before making a final decision of what works best in the long run, If you don’t have a business with multiple revenue streams, it’ll be harder to make ads work. You can also offer promotions if they buy more of your product to bring in additional sales. Or start to make content related to your product niche. Amazon Is the Unicorn of Online Sales Platforms Amazon has made it so easy to put your product on there and start to make money, but it’s not always that easy, especially with Facebook Ads. They do give you lots of features, but it’s not easy to turn it into revenue. Generally, you need to plan for the worst and work towards the best when you’re advertising your new product. You need to work on creating a real business for Facebook Ads to work. You don’t have to create content to create an email list, but we highly recommend it. You need to build your business and not just sell a product to make it a channel that works best for your business. When you have additional people, you can reach out to it’s beneficial and will make it much easier to scale in the long run. You can drive as much traffic to amazon as you want, but how do you scale that in a profitable way? Have a bunch of other products or provide visitors wit ha place where they are paying you back with ads or affiliate links that you have on your site. Way of the Artist - Teaser Ep #030 - "Who Do You Want to Be Now" - In this episode we discuss how to transcend our past, or better, how to use our past to transcend ourselves. We get into how we can get caught in the past and how that can be weaponized against our ability to be present. As human beings we make meaning about nearly everything and often those meanings are not always serving us. We also make patterns out of the events that happen in our lives and attempt to use those perceived patterns to predict our futures. This can be valuable and serve us, but it can also limit us and make us play small in our lives. So the real question is... who do you want to be now? That is up to you to decide not based on your past, but based on your inner truth that is free from the events of your past or from who you have been. If you are the sum total of the five people you hang out with most, do the people you have around you now actively support you? Are they helping you achieve what you want to do? Or do you need to make some changes in the people you have allowed into your life? Who are the best people to choose and how do you fire a friend? Cara Lumen, spiritual philosopher, explorer, and founder of the Deeper Song Community helps us sing a deeper song. In this episode she discusses the specific balance you need to keep among the three types of people you spend the most time with. In this episode we explore the balanced formula for choosing the people you invest the most time with: 1. One third are people who need your help. 2. One third are friends who support you in your daily life process. 3. One third are people that you can learn from. Explore the balance of personal friends you have in your life right now and find out how to make more supportive choices. Do you like who you are when you are with your friends? Jim Rohn, business philosopher, says that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. I totally agree with this, and I have seen it modeled in my own life. If you look around, I am sure you see it in yours. But, who SHOULD you be spending your time with and who should you be avoiding? And how do you get around those people you want to be around? "Creative Commons" by Luke Chesser is licensed under CC BY 2.0 Click to Listen If Who You Spend Time With Is Who You Become then .... Who Do You Want to Be Around Child Test - Next time you are hanging with friends, ask yourself “would I want my kids (even if you do not have any) to be with these people?” If yes, you may have a winner. If no, then you need to ask yourself why you are not comfortable. Encouragement Test - You want to be around people who encourage and motivate you. Not that they need to complement you constantly, but they somehow inspire you to be a better you. These people are often willing to call you out when you need it. Model Test - Are they living the life you would like to be living. Something about them is admirable. Could be they are successful in your business field, or could be they are stronger Christian’s. Whatever it is, they model something you admire and want to be more like. Reciprocity Test - This is not a one way relationship, you can add value to their lives. You do not want to be a user or a predator (see below) so you want to make sure you add something into their lives also. Even if these people are mentors, you need to have something to offer in return. It may be just friendship or allowing them to guide you and help you - but they need something from you just as you need from them. [Tweet "Who you spend time with is who you become. "] Who Should You Avoid It is nice to talk about who we want to spend time with but who we should avoid is a tougher call - often because we are already heavily embedded with them. There have been times in my life when I looked up and realized I spent almost all of my time with the wrong people. One common way to realize this is that you find yourself doing things they do, and you do not like yourself for doing it. This is a tough situation. So start with looking for why these people are the wrong people. Note: Getting away from these people takes a lot of strength and courage, but the first step is identifying the problem. Bad Influencers - This group can be full of fun and adventure - but in the end they are destructive. The Drama Queen - This person is always in a drama. They often need you, and often at bad times, such as late at night. The Deceiver - Mixed in with the drama king or queen is the deceiver. I do not mean people who tell you lies, that is likely all of us. I mean those who habitual twist the truth and deceive you. People who lie so often they begin to believe their own lies. Predators - These kind of people drain you and your energy and motivation. Problem is, they are often people very close to us. I see many people who are dating in these destructive relationships. Predators are often insecure and need you (or someone else) in order for them to feel important and needed. They can be hard to spot, and it is even worse if you are one. The Controller - They often will manipulate you into spending time with them through guilt. They may want to even dominate you and your time when you are at a party or around others. Signs of this is they answer questions for you, or when someone else is talking to you, they come up and get in the conversation and turn it back to themselves. Uses you - These people are all about them. They act like friends as long as they need something, but then they disappear until they need something again. Negative Souls - Some people are not really bad but they are negative. They talk bad about people,
In this series of short podcast episodes I’m going to share some of the big ideas I teach as part of The New Man 360 audio course. That said, let’s dive in and discuss why so many guys hit the wall even if it appears — from the outside — that their personal lives, their relationships, and their career all seem to be doing just fine. Playing a Role As men we often define our lives by our job or what we do — I’m a coach, a lawyer, an entrepreneur, a cafeteria worker. We may have trained ourselves from an early age to be a “good boy” or a “good student”. The problem is that this mindset is simply focused on playing a role. It’s about performance. It’s about meeting some imagined external expectation about who we should be or who we’re supposed to be. In this mindset we’ve allowed ourselves to succumb to an external authority. The theory goes — “If I do what I should do, if I do what a good guy or good student or good husband or good father or successful professional is supposed to do then I will be lit up. I’ll feel peaceful. I’ll be loved. I’ll feel free. If I follow the rules then I’ll be fulfilled.” It sounds good, right? This Idea is Bullshit The heavy cost of this mindset is that most of us end up on autopilot lumbering through our lives playing a role instead of actively creating the experiences we most deeply want. We end up wasting our lives. Many guys drive themselves to exhaustion and depression and dysfunction because they’re ignoring their own inner authority. They’re following the external rules instead of listening to their inner wisdom. They’re ignoring their own unique sense of what will have them feel freedom, love, passion, and peace. To avoid this wall and the sense of a wasted life we need to develop and follow our own inner authority. This means we need to be willing to ditch the roles and orient our lives around what actually strengthens us. And this is about the time the voices of doubt and resistance show up. Here Comes the Doubt and Fear “But if I only do what I want isn’t that selfish? Isn’t that narcissistic? Won’t I be a lousy person or professional or husband or father if I’m taking time away from that stuff to focus on what feeds me?” Good point. The fear is that if we do what truly feeds us then that means we’re going to damage the other things we really care about. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Who Do You Want in Bed with Your Wife? Consider this idea — What if it’s not a choice between either what strengthens you or protecting what you love? What if taking the time and energy to do what invigorates you has you be a better husband and father? What if doing the things that have you feel more peaceful and free also have you be more creative and productive at work? The bullshit belief is that we have to deprive ourselves in order to do or be our best. We’ve bought into this weak idea that caring for ourselves is selfish or bad or wrong. But let me ask you this… Which version of yourself would you prefer to be in your office or in bed with your wife or playing with your kids? The one who is drained, checked out, resentful, or toxic? Or the one who is invigorated, present, open-hearted, and playful? The Bottom Line? Don’t use your job or your family to justify self-deprivation. Don’t blame them. Challenge the idea that says you’ll be fulfilled if you simply do what you imagine others expect of you. Instead, begin experimenting with action. Start small. Very small. You don’t need a plan. You simply need to start experimenting and gathering data around what actually has you feel more alive or more free or more loving or more peaceful. This is how you develop your sense of inner authority. This is how you slowly let go of role playing and step fully into a life that you truly love. This is Just the Tip Now there are many, many more big ideas and practical lessons in The New Man 360 audio course. The New Man 360 covers what really matters and what rea...
