In this episode is the conclusion of our 2 part conversation with Max Ajl. Max Ajl is an educator and a researcher and the author of A People's Green New Deal, which we highly recommend and had a previous discussion of back in 2021. He is also the associate editor of Agrarian South: Journal of Political Economy. Here we continued our discussion of his piece “Theories of Political Ecology: Monopoly Capital Against People and the Planet." In this section of the conversation we talk about China's role in the world system and Max discusses the question of imperialism with regard to China, specifically on the African continent. From there we get into a discussion of degrowth, what Ajl sees as its strengths and weaknesses as a camp of ecological thought engaging at a popular level. We also dig deeper into Max's interventions in the realm of ecologically unequal exchange, something we began to discuss in part 1 of the conversation. We thank Max Ajl for this conversation and will include links to a bunch of the citations in the show notes as well as to the article we're discussing and Agrarian South Journal. We recorded this conversation way back in early August, but this is the first episode we've released since the most recent phase of Palestinian Resistance to apartheid and colonialism began on October 7th and since the apocalyptic Israeli siege on Gaza began as a form of collective punishment. We want to express our unequivocal solidarity with the Palestinian people in this time in their anticolonial struggle, and enduring the crimes against humanity that the Israeli state is enacting on the whole population of Gaza. We will be looking to do some more work on that specific topic soon. But for now we want to make sure to relay that to our listeners along with this episode. In this episode Max Ajl returns to the podcast. Max Ajl is an educator and a researcher and the author of A People's Green New Deal, which we highly recommend and had a previous discussion of back in 2021. He is also the associate editor of Agrarian South: Journal of Political Economy. We caught up with Max back in early August to talk about one of his recent pieces, from Agrarian South. The article is entitled “Theories of Political Ecology: Monopoly Capital Against People and the Planet.” It's a very interesting article that covers a range of ostensibly left-wing approaches to ecology and the ecological crisis through a critical lens. Recording this conversation in the middle of summer there were a number of events and conversations we reference that folks will recall. This will be a two-part release. In this first portion we talk about the theory of ecologically unequal exchange, wheat and cereal grains as weapons of imperialism, bananas and fresh fruits in the first world, and get into some of Alj's critiques of different strains of political ecology. In particular in this episode Max talks about Andreas Malm's formulation of “Fossil Capitalism,” and also critically engages with the frameworks of eco-modernism and extractivism. Ajl challenges the euro-centric variants of Marxism that dominate much of the first-world Marxist engagement with ecological questions, raising the importance of bringing anti-imperialist analysis, a world-system level understanding of capitalism and solidarity with national liberation movements into the theory and practice of ecological movements. We will link the article we discuss in the show notes as well as some of the articles that Max mentions in the discussion. In part two of this conversation which will come out in a few days, we will talk a little more about eco-modernism and get into degrowth as well. This is our first episode of the month of October, we thankfully hit our goal of new patrons for the last month. And have set a goal once again to add 40 new patrons this month to keep up with nonrenewals and hopefully slowly increase our base of support for the show. Thanks to everyone who contributes. Just a quick thank you to AJL, as well as Jacque and Nkosinathi for your kind comments and emails - this series is nothing without my wonderful audience. Gangans — which is Khoesan for thank you. Voortrekker leader Piet Retief knew that he had to negotiate for any land in Natal with the Zulu king Dingane. So with that in mind, he left his family on the top of the escarpment as you heard at the end of last episode, taking four of the wagons and a small party of 15 men over the side of the Drakensburg by way of what we now call Retief's Pass in October 1837. He was still hopeful that Gerrit Maritz would join up with him so he loitered for a while at the base of the Drakensburg. Realising after almost two weeks that it was a futile to continue to delay, he turned for Port Natal, or what was now called Durban. The first negotiations he needed to conduct were not with the AmaZulu, but the fractious and rebellious Durban traders. If any land was going to be seconded to the Voortrekkers, he needed to clear any plans with the semi-desperate crew living around the fledgling port. It took 90 hours to ride from the base of the Drakensburg mountains to Durban - and the exhausted group of trekkers rode into the harbour town on 20th October. Like other visitors, Retief was shocked to note that there were “53 Englishmen, no white women, only black ones…” Dingane was also acutely aware that in military matters, he was in a somewhat weakened position. All the reports he'd heard about the British and how they'd defeated the amaXhosa with their firearms and horses had shaken the Zulu king. He'd also heard about the attack on Mosega, and was about to hear about how Potgieter and Uys had driven Mzilikazi from eGabeni forever. Back in Cape Town, British officials were growing concerned. They heard about the amaNdebele's fate, and how the Voortrekkers were now heading to Natal. Instead of stabilising things, the Boers appeared to be causing one war after another. Shortly afterwards the Boers saddled up for a much more difficult mission - to approach Dingane to try and get the king's permission to settle within his land. They couldn't just ride in, first they sent a message to one of the most important characters of this part of our story, a missionary called Reverend Francis Owen of the Church Missionary Society. Important because he was going to be an eyewitness to brutal events. Owen and his wife were not alone at emGungundlovu. His sister was there too, and an interpreter, an artisan builder and mechanic Richard Hulley, Hulley's wife and three children as well as Jane Williams, his Khoesan servant. They'd rolled up to Dingane's great place in the second week of October 1837. This less than a month before Retief was going to show up.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are huge buzz words these days and for good reason. They are increasingly being used within research and by companies to make important decisions about our lives. Dr Mavis Machirori, a senior researcher in AI and healthcare, talks about the dangers of poorly designed AI systems and how the lack of diversity in the tech space means algorithms and machine-learning systems discriminate against Black (and other minority) communities.
Dr. Steve Wood and Dr. Bill Kanasky, Jr. talk about witness testimony and the problems and dangers of pivoting during deposition questioning. They discuss how defense attorneys don't realize how they are opening the door to counterattacks from opposing counsel when they encourage their witnesses to pivot and answer questions with phrases like "Yes, but..." Steve and Bill describe the psychology behind why providing detailed explanations in normal, everyday situations is very different than in the adversarial environment of a deposition. Another danger for witnesses they talk about is repetitive questions and how witnesses must be trained to hold their ground with plaintiff questions that are repeated over and over again. The idea of a Green New Deal was launched into popular consciousness by US Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018. It has become a watchword in the current era of global climate crisis. But what – and for whom – is the Green New Deal? In this concise and urgent book, Max Ajl provides an overview of the various mainstream Green New Deals. Critically engaging with their proponents, ideological underpinnings and limitations, he goes on to sketch out a radical alternative: a 'People's Green New Deal' committed to decommodification, working-class power, anti-imperialism and agro-ecology. Ajl diagnoses the roots of the current socio-ecological crisis as emerging from a world-system dominated by the logics of capitalism and imperialism. Resolving this crisis, he argues, requires nothing less than an infrastructural and agricultural transformation in the Global North, and the industrial convergence between North and South. As the climate crisis deepens and the literature on the subject grows, A People's Green New Deal (Pluto Press, 2021) contributes a distinctive perspective to the debate. This one. Oh boy, this one. In an attempt to tell the myth of the Corinthian King who was subjected to an afterlife of meaningless toil we end up rolling a few boulders of our own. We'd wager this episode is only half about Sisyphus and the other half is about one cohost's insane quest to catch his supposed shoe thief (guess which one).
