Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing may be the single most recommended comics arc for new comic readers coming to the medium as an adult. It is often referred to as "The Day that Comics Grew Up" (at least that is what Wendy calls it). Entire college courses could be (and probably have been) taught on Saga of the Swamp Thing. You can see its influence ripple throughout the industry and influence other great works like Niel Gaiman's Sandman. In this episode, Carolyn and Wendy will be introducing you to Alan Moore and how he came to write Swamp Thing after Len Wein and then they will take you through his first arc centered around some game-changing revelations about our favorite much monster and the madness of Jason Woodrue On this very important episode Carolyn and Wendy will be covering: The Importance of Allan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing to the Comics Industry A brief background on the early life of Allan Moore How Len Wein hand picked Moore to write his baby How Allan Moore introduced concepts that formed the basis for DC's modern concept of magic An in-depth look at Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 (February 1984) - The Anatomy Lesson Saga of the Swamp Thing #22 (March 1984) - Swamped Saga of the Swamp Thing #23 (April 1984) - Another Green World Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 (May 1984) - Roots We will cover concepts like the perception of reality dealing with trauma environmentalism in ways you may not expect the beginnings of the evolution of Abby Arcane And you will learn everything you never wanted to know about Planarian Worms In the episode, we promised a few links to interesting reading material This is a great interview with Alan Moore, Len Wein and Karen Berger on how Allan Moore took over the book and what he had planned for it. 1985 Interview with Alan Moore Part I - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJlZUpgXQJI 1985 Interview with Alan Moore Part II -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze3rCvyiISA 1985 Interview with Alan Moore Part III -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Emi-TqzF80 1985 Interview with Alan Moore Part IV -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpYPOfv08F8 1985 Interview with Alan Moore Part V -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gIrDgIKpas The quote from Len Wein about his first phone call to Alan Moore can be found in Alan Moore: Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman, published in 2003 by Abiogenesis LOGLINE: When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland—only to have him tragically taken from her. A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum: Why has this surreal track remained enduringly popular for over 50 years? Soul Music hears the stories and memories of those who love it. Released in May 1967, A Whiter Shade of Pale was Procol Harum's first single. It went to No. 1 in the UK, and stayed there for six weeks. Contributors: Musicologist, Allan Moore, deconstructs the track and dismisses the almost universally accepted idea that it mimics Bach's Air on a G String. Film-maker, Chris Rodley, remembers the impact it had on him when he heard it for the first time, in the dead of the night, on Radio Caroline. Musician, James Pollard, explains how he created a wedding march for a friend using this track as inspiration. Thriller writer, Nelson DeMille, describes his year in Vietnam as 'the year without music', but A Whiter Shade of Pale is the one song that reminds him of his time there. Singer, Sarah Collins, suffered a brain tumour shortly after the birth of her second child. Making the decision to sing again was fundamental to her healing process. As her Dad, Phil, explains 'Whiter Shade' is his favourite song. He was very moved when she decided to record it for her YouTube channel. Produced in Bristol by Karen Gregor.
ELO's brilliantly off-beam classic, Mr Blue Sky, is explored in this week's Soul Music. It was released as a single in 1978, having first appeared on the ELO album 'Out of the Blue' in 1977. Written by Jeff Lynne, it was a no.6 hit in the UK, and has endured on the radio airwaves ever since. Contributing to the programme: Tracey Collinson whose husband, Nigel, loved the track tells of the meaning it has for her. Musicologist, Allan Moore, discusses the anomolous use of the word 'blue': usually associated with downbeat emotions, this is a peculiar subversion of that cultural norm with the word 'blue' conjuring happiness and good weather. Tremayne Crossley and his friend, Jo Milne, tell the extraordinary story of how Jo heard music for the first time. This track played an important role in that event. For Dr. Sam Illingworth, Mr Blue Sky will always take him back to the low-flying research-flights he made over the wetlands, greenlands and seas of the Arctic Circle with the shadow of the BAE146 plane beneath him and clear blue skies above. The children of King's St. Albans in Worcester sang the track that features at the end of the programme. Producer: Karen Gregor.
John and I are joined by our friend D'Artagnon Wells to continue our discussion on zombies, specifically In the Flesh. We also talk a bit about Allan Moore, Firefly, the Walking Dead and those unsung heroes of television and film: make up artists and lighting designers. So enjoy the conversation.
