This week on the podcast I had a licensed clinical therapist, Amy Margolis, share her own story of recovery from anorexia and perfectionism + how she now helps her clients do the same.   She talks about the “anorexic mindset” and how it extends far beyond food.   If you're someone who's struggling with anxiety, guilt or feeling out of control around food AND…   ➡️ You always feel like you need to be doing MORE…   ➡️ You need to do a million things to EARN something pleasurable (whether that be rest, food or a shopping spree)…   ➡️ You're highly disciplined and it's brought you success but you're not able to actually ENJOY the fruits of your labor because you can't relax and take a break…   …this episode is going to help you.   Finding a peaceful and free relationship with food can coexist with being a high-achieving, driven person.   But it's going to require you to LET GO OF CONTROL and FACE YOUR FEARS.   We talk about:   Allowing yourself to be SLOPPY Taking the leap of faith to give yourself permission to eat Knowing how to restrict but not knowing how to GIVE to yourself without guilt Eating when you're hungry, eating what you want and learning to trust your body Looking at what comes BEFORE a binge (were you fully listening to your hunger? Were you planning to restrict later on?)   As someone who has disconnected her perfectionism from food/body/exercise but still REALLY struggles with it in other areas of life…I really loved recording this and can't wait for you to hear it.   Amy's Resources: Here's the Memo Book: https://amymargolislcsw.com/new-book-from-amy-margolis-heres-the-memo/ Amy's Website: https://amymargolislcsw.com/ Amy's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heres_the_memo/   Contact me (Elena): DM me on Instagram @elenakunickird      Email me at elena@elenakunicki.com ✨ Learn more about my group program + book a free discovery call: bit.ly/normaleater

They discussed the complex relationship between food, trauma, and addiction. Amy explained how people often turn to food as a way to cope with trauma or emotional pain, leading to unhealthy eating habits and a cycle of self-hatred, highlighting the socialization of food and its role in comfort and nurturing. They both emphasized the need to address the root trauma instead of using food as a coping mechanism. Amy shared her journey with eating disorders and the lessons she learned along the way. She emphasized the importance of breaking free from strict rules and restrictions, creating a balanced and fulfilling life, and highlighting the need for a gradual change process rather than immediate strict rules. Amy explained the concept of the "critter brain," which consists of three parts: the brain stem, the emotional brain (the amygdala), and the prefrontal cortex. She emphasized that the brain sees change as a threat and that relapse is a normal part of the process, especially when one is trying to break free from old patterns. Dr. Zeine added to this by sharing her experiences with individuals who have gone through abuse and addiction, highlighting that relapse is often a part of the learning process and that each time it occurs, there is an opportunity to gain new insights. They discussed the concept of emotional freedom and its role in personal growth. Emotional freedom is recognizing one's power and agency in situations rather than feeling victimized by external circumstances. Emotional freedom also involves letting go of things beyond one's control and focusing on what can be changed. Both stressed the importance of self-reflection and seeking support from others as part of the growth process. They shared their views on self-care, self-love, and self-awareness in relationships. They emphasized that individuals should prioritize their own needs and emotions rather than focusing on their partners' faults. They also highlighted the concept of ebb and flow in relationships, suggesting that periods of distance or separation could strengthen the bond between partners. Amy encouraged people to live their lives to the fullest and pursue their dreams, while Dr. Zeine stressed the importance of maintaining authentic connections with others.

The pod train is stopping at Inspiration Station once again this week. My guest is Amy Margolis, a listener who reached out to me after my conversation with Krista Alderdice in Episode 17. Krista had interviewed Amy and her husband David for her Blue Collar Runners site, because they are the epitome of everyday people doing extra cool things in running - a concept I can obviously get behind!Amy and David are triathletes, ultrarunners, vanlifers…. There are so many things that make their stories unique and interesting. But what I love above all about my conversation with Amy is that it all comes back to community, every time. Amy was never athletic, and hadn’t been taking very good care of herself as she turned 30. She felt stuck in a bad marriage, and felt herself spiraling downward toward a place she knew deep down she didn’t want to land. But then she got herself over to her local YMCA. And if her story from that point on doesn’t light a fire under your butt for the new year, I’m not sure anything will….There’s an old saying, ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’, and Amy’s story is this aphorism in action.Amy leaves us with a ton of inspiration to end 2020. As she says, let’s just be happy to be out there. Let’s take an extra moment every day to feel gratitude about what we CAN do, whom we CAN see and spend time with, and how we ARE able to move our body. Let’s celebrate all of the opportunity we have, rather than focus on our lack. The light is at the end of the tunnel…. We may or may not be getting close, but it IS there and we WILL reach it.You can follow Amy's adventures in running, tri, and vanlife on Instagram, @David_Amy_Mira. You can also check out Amy and David’s YouTube channel here, and make sure to watch Amy’s amazing 2020 ‘Boston Marathon’! This week, Popaganda’s HEAT season heads away from the fire—and marches directly toward the smoke. In this week’s episode, host Carmen Rios talks to a slew of “puffragettes” fighting to end the drug war, foster a more equitable cannabis industry and forge a feminist future in weed. 2019 has already heralded in a whole lot of victories in the fight for laws that decriminalize and legalize cannabis possession and distribution—and studies show that more women are lighting up than ever. When marijuana business boomed, the number of women in leadership positions in the industry fell, and the national patchwork of drug laws leaves people of color at risk for criminalization and incarceration every day. But women aren’t surrendering to the patriarchal and corporate forces threatening the future of cannabis. Instead, they’re organizing at the state and national level for comprehensive marijuana laws, building networks for women in the business of bud, and creating space for marginalized communities to reclaim and redefine weed culture. Carmen talks to policy experts, business leaders and community-focused stoners in this episode—digging into the importance of comprehensive drug laws with Karen O’Keefe from the Marijuana Policy Projects, talking shop with The Incubator founder Amy Margolis and Ellementa co-founder Aliza Sherman, envisioning queer cannabis culture with 420 Queer co-founder Irene Urias and appraising the landscape of the sector with Mary Janes: The Women of Weed filmmaker Windy Borman.  Carmen came to every interview with the same question: What does a feminist weed culture look like? She came away with the knowledge that there are a lot of moving parts — and a lot of work ahead — in the fight to create equity in cannabis. But she’s hopeful, like the women she talks to, that the future of weed is feminist — and that together, we can take down the capitalist stoner bros trying to convince us it never was.
