Asparagus, lesbian family rights and Viktor Orbán's latest power plays: like all good meals, this podcast episode is perfectly balanced. German food writer Ursula Heinzelmann joins us to explain the ‘Spargelzeit' phenomenon that sees foodies going nutty for asparagus at this time of year. We're also taking a look at LGBTQ rights in Italy and unpacking the Hungarian government's plans to ‘starve and strangle' civil society. Can Orbán be stopped?   You can find out more about Ursula's work on her website and follow her on Instagram here.   Thanks for listening. If you have any spare cash this week, please consider donating to Hungarian civil society groups and independent media outlets before the planned passing of the ‘starve and strangle' law in mid-June. UNITED for Intercultural Action, the NGO run by our former guest Philip Pollák, would be extremely grateful for your donations; you can also donate to any of the organisations on this list of Hungarian NGOs (get in touch if you have ideas of organisations to add to this list).   Still got some spare cash? Romania, Poland, Portugal... and of course, most importantly of all (?), Eurovision. It's been a huge week of voting across Europe! This week we're mostly diving into Romania's election drama with Codruţa Simina, a journalist with an extremely helpful specialism in online misinformation and disinformation. We're also tackling the controversy over Israel's continued participation in Eurovision, as well as the Pfizergate scandal: will we ever get to read the text messages Ursula von der Leyen sent to one of the world's most powerful pharmaceutical bosses?    Codruţa's excellent newsletter, Misreport, can be found here.   Thanks for listening. In theory, the government's guy looks set to win Poland's presidential election, making life a hell of a lot easier for Donald Tusk as he attempts to undo eight years of destructive authoritarian rule under the previous rightwing populists. But might a pregnant nun swoop in and change everything at the last minute? For an explanation of this metaphor (and yes, it is just a metaphor), listen in to this week's great interview with Poland's best political YouTubers, Dominika Sitnicka and Agata Szczęśniak. We're taking the Schadenfreude approach to the chaos that Trump's tariffs have unleashed upon Europe (and the rest of the world). This week, our favourite Luxembourger Nina Lamparski joins Dominic to explain why sales of Elon Musk's Tesla cars have already plunged in Europe and could now fare even worse thanks to his best bud's trade policies. We're also joined by Turkish political scientist Ezgi Başaran to discuss why President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is feeling liberated in a time that's been dubbed 'springtime for autocrats' — and whether the huge protests against him could change that. Plus, is Spain's clever new food waste law as good as it sounds?    This episode was recorded on Tuesday night, before the EU's announcement of retaliatory tariffs... and before the White House's announcement of a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries. There's been a weird loophole in the war in Ukraine up until now. It's the only revolution in world history (that we know of) that began with a Eurovision song. This week, Portugal marks 50 years since the Carnation Revolution ended decades of dictatorship. We speak to Alex Fernandes, author of a new accessible history of the revolution, about the day that changed everything. We're also talking about the UK's missed opportunity to give an entire generation fun memories (and skills, but mostly fun memories) and Milan's ice cream uproar.  Alex's book, ‘The Carnation Revolution: The Day Portugal's Dictatorship Fell' is out now. In Iceland, the night of December 24 is traditionally spent curled up with a book. Why? Because you're very likely to have been gifted one, given the huge array of literary offerings that get published in Iceland in the run-up for Christmas. In this festive last episode of the year, we're speaking to the writer Hildur Knútsdóttir about the Christmas Book Flood and why Iceland is such a nation of bookworms. We're also talking about Christmas tree diplomacy, a new twist on an old tradition, and an Italian tyre-slashing mystery.  You can find Hildur here on Instagram and here on Twitter. You can find details of her new book, 'The Night Guest', here on her website.  This week's Inspiration Station offerings: 'Small Things Like These' by Claire Keegan, 'My Father's House' by Joseph O'Connor, and 'La Ride' by Simon Boileau and Florent Pierre. Hildur's recommendations are 'Shadows of the Short Days' and 'The Shadows of a Midnight Sun' by Alexander Dan Vilhjálmsson. Thanks so much to everyone who's supported us this year. Happy Soxivus! We are following up our first year celebrating Soxivus in 2021 with a full two months of festivities in 2022. Last year, we picked managers who could dethrone Tony La Russa in running the White Sox. This week, our Feats of Strength take the form of programming a SoxFest, after the White Sox cancelled their official one for the third straight season. We're overjoyed to have Father Soxivus, Tommy Barbee — the man who hatched the Soxivus plan last year — with us on these podcasts. Joining Tommy to program our Fest are Jordan Hass, Allie Wesel, Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, Joe Resis and Malachi Hayes, with the festivities hosted by Brett Ballantini. Read our accompanying Feats of Strength story on programming Soxivus Fest that much of this podcast refers to, please. Reviewing the short-sighted decision to cancel SoxFest for the third straight year — did someone cheap out on putting down the non-refundable deposit on McCormick Place? We can get up in arms about losing SoxFest and chide Rick Hahn for being afraid to face the music, but it's the hundreds of young fans (and fans who cheer like children, there are many, no shame there) who really lose out On to our SoxivusFest, with Melissa explaining her Run Sox Run activity, which borrows from Herb Lawrence's ill-fated sprint challenge during the season. We think we would fare better Joe's Put Away Pitches event challenges fan managers to make the right call on 1-2. Anything better than in intentional walk comes away with a free SoxivusFest T-shirt. Tommy's Manager Draft cleverly finds a way to cram all of the bad, recycled White Sox manager possibilities into one season, in a sort of college of coaches arrangement. There's also an Inspiration Station that has to be heard or read to be believed Jordan comes through with two fun ideas, starting with Rick Hahn's Mild Ride — duller than white bread. Also, there are outfield tryouts, and if participants manage to injure themselves in exotic (but, for the White Sox, predictable) ways, they'll get a start in 2023 before Oscar Colás Allie stages an intervention for Hahn, with the intention of making him stronger in future trade and free agent negotiations and getting him a true Seat at the Table Malachi puts a twist on the Garage Sale of years past, where creative payment plans are not only encouraged, but expected Adrian Serrano was not able to join the podcast, but did provide events of his own, as well. Additionally, he created our Soxivus 2022 T-shirt available to order at our SSHP store The second half of the podcast — yes, this one is chock-full — addresses the Ozzie Guillén managing rumors. The panel is deadlocked as to whether the White Sox are actually going to hire Ozzie — who, let's review, left the South Side the first time by announcing his new manager position during a game he was managing for the White Sox Learn more about your ad choices. There are many thoughts on how the Bible came to us. However, in Evangelical circles, the term "Verbal Plenary Inspiration" is used quite a bit. The term is rather wordy but I think I've found an good example to show what the term is describing. Here are some thoughts...

The pod train is stopping at Inspiration Station once again this week. My guest is Amy Margolis, a listener who reached out to me after my conversation with Krista Alderdice in Episode 17. Krista had interviewed Amy and her husband David for her Blue Collar Runners site, because they are the epitome of everyday people doing extra cool things in running - a concept I can obviously get behind!Amy and David are triathletes, ultrarunners, vanlifers…. There are so many things that make their stories unique and interesting. But what I love above all about my conversation with Amy is that it all comes back to community, every time. Amy was never athletic, and hadn’t been taking very good care of herself as she turned 30. She felt stuck in a bad marriage, and felt herself spiraling downward toward a place she knew deep down she didn’t want to land. But then she got herself over to her local YMCA. And if her story from that point on doesn’t light a fire under your butt for the new year, I’m not sure anything will….There’s an old saying, ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’, and Amy’s story is this aphorism in action.Amy leaves us with a ton of inspiration to end 2020. As she says, let’s just be happy to be out there. Let’s take an extra moment every day to feel gratitude about what we CAN do, whom we CAN see and spend time with, and how we ARE able to move our body. Let’s celebrate all of the opportunity we have, rather than focus on our lack. The light is at the end of the tunnel…. We may or may not be getting close, but it IS there and we WILL reach it.You can follow Amy's adventures in running, tri, and vanlife on Instagram, @David_Amy_Mira. You can also check out Amy and David’s YouTube channel here, and make sure to watch Amy’s amazing 2020 ‘Boston Marathon’! (You’ll probably agree with me that Boylston street looks like it could use a repave…..)Wishing you all a safe and happy new year - make sure you find a little time to get outdoors and get some fresh air before you start getting a little wild! Some links to rock you into the new year:Leukemia & Lymphoma SocietyAmerica’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride (Lake Tahoe)Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon (Seattle, WA)John Wayne Trail (renamed Palouse to Cascades Trail)Unbound Gravel Race (Emporia, KS)What is boondocking?Hyland’sTailwind NutritionArrowhead 135Laura Siebert of 180 Health (GGW Episode 21; recommending the SheWee)XOSKIN socksSuperfeet insoles

What is Human Design and how can you use it to become the most successful and fulfilled you?   According to today's guest, Human Design Reader, Certified Coach and Podcaster, Kelsey Abbot, Human Design is a system that combines astrology, the chakras and the Kabbalah Tree of Life.   Kelsey adds, "This is how I describe it: Years ago, your soul got called to Earth School, but before it enrolled, it selected your blueprint, your style and a whole bunch of gifts. And then it decided exactly when and where it would come to Earth. Human design allows us to see all the choices your soul made for you."   About Kelsey:   Kelsey Abbott is an intuitive Human Design Reader, a Certified Professional Coach, Instigator of Joy and the host of the Find Your Awesome podcast.
