What does eating disorder recovery truly mean? In this transformative episode of Fly to Freedom, I uncover the deeper meaning of recovery. It's not just about overcoming the fear of eating or stopping destructive behaviours—it's about rediscovering who you are, learning to meet your needs, and creating a life that aligns with your authentic self. Whether you are struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, orthorexia, or any other eating disorder, FOOD is often a symptom and not the real problem. Recovery is about addressing the deeper layers—emotional, psychological, and physical—that contribute to the eating disorder, helping you build a life of freedom and self-compassion. In this episode, I'll explore: Why recovery is about more than food and weight gain fears. How to reconnect with your emotions and let go of the “shoulds.” Building trust with your body and listening to its signals for hunger, rest, and care. The power of gratitude and how it can transform your journey. Practical tips and reflective questions to help you embrace self-discovery in recovery. Recovery isn't a fixed destination—it's a lifelong journey of growth, learning, and becoming more aligned with your true self. Whether you're in the early stages of anorexia recovery or further along in your eating disorder recovery, this episode will inspire and empower you to move forward with compassion and curiosity. Key Takeaways: Let go of perfection and focus on reconnecting with your messy, beautiful, real self. Embrace the full range of your emotions—they're signals, not enemies. Start trusting your body—it's your ally, not your enemy. Small steps matter: Set boundaries, say no when you mean no, and prioritise your needs. Gratitude shifts your mindset from scarcity to abundance, helping you find joy in the present moment. Reflective Questions to Support Your Recovery: What does recovery mean to you? How often do you prioritise others' needs over your own? What would it feel like to live a life free of the “shoulds”? What's one step you can take today to reconnect with your authentic self?

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jacqueline "Jaq” Sherman about her long journey recovering from bulimia. Jaq opened up about the roots of her eating disorder, tracing it back to difficult family dynamics in her childhood where she felt she couldn't use her voice. The bulimia started when she was 15 during her parents' divorce, and she turned to bingeing and purging as a way to cope with the turmoil and lack of control she felt.  Jaq was incredibly candid about the shame, self-hatred, and exhaustion that defined her years being gripped by bulimia. She tried multiple treatment centres and Overeaters Anonymous, but nothing seemed to fully work until she met her pivotal therapist Anita Johnston. Anita had Jaq track her binge/purge cycles to identify the underlying needs and feelings driving the behaviours. For Jaq, it always came back to not using her voice and feeling overwhelmed. Through hard work with Anita, Jaq slowly learned to speak up for herself, set boundaries, and meet her needs in healthier ways. She shared how self-compassion was key, even if she had to "fake it 'til she made it" at first. Jaq's resilience shone through as she recounted the many times she "fell down" with lapses but kept getting back up. Her life today is full - with a wonderful marriage, rewarding job, and true self-acceptance. Jaq's story offers so much hope that full recovery from an eating disorder is possible, even after years of struggle. Her wisdom about being patient yet persistent with yourself in recovery was inspiring. I was moved by Jaq's courage to share her imperfect yet transformative journey to self-love. In this episode, I focus on the importance of positive self-talk and using empowering language in one's journey towards eating disorder recovery. As someone who has recovered from a 40-year battle with anorexia, orthorexia, and exercise addiction, I emphasise how the words we use to speak to ourselves can significantly impact our mindset, self-esteem, and overall progress in recovery.  I highlight the power of positive affirmations, such as "I am worthy of recovery," "I am resilient and capable," and "I deserve support," in creating a transformative mindset and fostering self-compassion and empowerment. In contrast, I point out how negative self-talk can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, and unworthiness, ultimately hindering the recovery process. The episode also addresses the significance of the specific language we use, such as replacing "I'll try" with "I will do," as the former implies uncertainty and potential failure, while the latter demonstrates a firm commitment and determination. I provide numerous examples of reframing negative statements into positive, empowering ones, such as "I am learning to love myself" instead of "I hate myself," and "I can find a solution" instead of "I can't solve this problem." Throughout the episode, I emphasise the importance of being mindful of our language choices and using words that inspire action, boost confidence, and reinforce our intentions. I encourage listeners to grab a journal and write down how they want to feel about themselves, how they want to speak to themselves, and how they want to show up in the world, and then start acting and using the language that aligns with those desires. Overall, the episode aims to empower listeners to take control of their self-talk and use positive, uplifting language that nurtures their well-being and promotes long-term healing in their eating disorder recovery journey. I started this episode by sharing a random story about needing to get a pedicure because my feet were looking rough from going barefoot often. However, I kept making excuses for weeks about why I couldn't go get the pedicure done. I realised this is exactly what we do with our eating disorders - we constantly make excuses to avoid recovery and stay stuck in the disorder.  I then went through many of the common excuses people give for not recovering, while explaining why these excuses don't really hold up. Some included saying you have a slow metabolism so need less food, thinking you'll just get bigger forever if you eat, being afraid you'll only want junk food, thinking you're too fat or not sick enough to recover, and worrying about digestive issues from reintroducing foods. I empathised that recovery is extremely difficult, but emphasised that everyone is capable of it and can get to a better life, even if professionals have told them otherwise. I shared that while my body did sustain some damage from years of restriction, recovering was still 100% worth it for the freedom, presence and joy I've regained in my life.   In closing, I invited listeners to become more aware of the excuses they tell themselves, and ask whether making that excuse is really taking them towards or away from the person they want to become. I encouraged asking if the decisions they're making are ones they can truly be proud of. Recovery is possible, and I believe in each person's ability to overcome their excuses and move forward. Episode 66 - The Power of Letting Go

Today I welcomed John Purkiss to the podcast After our initial exchange, I asked John to share about his personal journey of letting go. He described how, in his mid-twenties after recovering from clinical depression, he wrote the bestselling book "The Power of Letting Go" in Hindi and Spanish. His experience was that the key is to identify the root feeling that troubles you, such as not feeling good enough. For me, that earliest memory was being told at age 6 that I was not worth getting flowers for.  John explained that the first step is to intensely re-live the episode where that core feeling originated. For me, it was being told at age 6 that I was not worth getting flowers for. By intensely re-living that episode multiple times, the pain can eventually be released. John has done this process repeatedly, going back to the age of 1, to find and resolve his deepest root feelings. He walked me through an example using my memory of being told I wasn't worth flowers. John instructed me to close my eyes, revert to being 6 years old again, and vividly re-experience that moment of concluding I was not good enough. By allowing the emotions to surface and leave my body through this re-living process, the pain diminishes over time. John has methodically worked through his own root patterns this way, all the way back to age 1. The goal is to uproot and liberate ourselves from these deep core beliefs that drive so much of our suffering and dysfunctional patterns, like eating disorders. His new book on this completion process will be published next year, after the success of "The Power of Letting Go" in multiple languages. Episode 65 - Coping with Extreme Hunger

In this episode, Julia Trehane provides an in-depth exploration of extreme hunger, a common experience during recovery from restrictive eating disorders. She begins by defining extreme hunger (also known as hyperphagia) and outlining its key characteristics, including persistent cravings, a drive to eat large quantities, feeling out of control around food, and physical symptoms like fatigue. Julia delves into the biological reasons behind extreme hunger, such as hormonal imbalances involving ghrelin and leptin, metabolic adaptations during starvation, and nutrient deficiencies. She also discusses the psychological factors at play, including refeeding syndrome, food preoccupation, and anxiety around eating. The episode highlights that the experience of extreme hunger can vary greatly between individuals, influenced by factors like the severity of restriction, metabolism, psychological traits, nutritional status, and activity levels. Julia shares her own experience of near-constant grazing. Throughout the episode, Julia addresses common concerns and questions about extreme hunger, such as whether to exercise to compensate for increased intake (which she advises against), fears around weight gain, societal pressures related to food and body image, worries that the extreme hunger will never end, and concerns about developing "bad habits" like frequent snacking. Julia provides reassurance that extreme hunger is a temporary and necessary part of recovery, helping restore nutritional deficits and repair the body. She explains the set point weight theory, which suggests the body has a natural weight range it works to maintain. The episode offers practical tips for coping with the emotional challenges of extreme hunger, including surrendering to the process, seeking professional support, educating oneself, practicing self-compassion, maintaining a structured eating schedule while honouring hunger cues, and finding enjoyable distractions. Overall, Julia aims to normalise the experience of extreme hunger, provide a compassionate perspective based on science, and offer guidance to those navigating this difficult but crucial phase of eating disorder recovery. Some of the main topics covered included: - Recognising recovery highs and lows, and how the lows are part of the process towards freedom - Dealing with compulsive movement and hunger cues like obsessive thoughts about food - Honouring extreme mental and physical hunger, even if it feels like bingeing - How to rebuild a social life in recovery while navigating diet culture conversations - The importance of dealing with the root causes of the eating disorder for full recovery - Adapting recovery to accommodate GI issues or other health conditions   - Determining how much food is enough when hunger cues are absent - Fighting urges to relapse into old habits when clothes don't fit after weight gain - Not delaying taking action towards recovery because there will never be a "perfect" time Overall, they emphasised that feelings of discomfort are inevitable but temporary in recovery. Episode 62 - Your Inner Child

On today's episode of my podcast Fly to Freedom, I had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Zelli, a transformational coach who was my own coach after recovery, when I was exploring further healing. Michelle helped me immensely on my journey of healing and self-discovery after recovering from an eating disorder.  I invited Michelle on to discuss the concept of inner child healing, which was pivotal for me but something I initially dismissed as silly or unnecessary. Michelle eloquently explained that our inner child refers to the younger parts of ourselves that may have experienced lack of protection, nurturing or guidance growing up. This can manifest later in life as perfectionism, people-pleasing, anxiety, OCD and other unhelpful patterns. As Michelle and I unpacked this topic together, I realised how much my own childhood conditioning of being a "good girl", pleasing others and suppressing anger had disconnected me from my authentic self-expression. I shared how even doing simple things like watching Disney movies or playing felt forbidden until Michelle helped me reconnect with that innocent, joyful part of myself. Michelle's insights helped me understand my former overwhelming busyness and inability to slow down were trauma responses trying to avoid painful emotions. She encouraged radical self-compassion to start unraveling the layers of harmful beliefs I had adapted just to survive emotionally as a child. While the process hasn't been easy, facing emotional truths I had been blind to, Michelle's guidance has allowed me to peel back those protective adaptations and rediscover my genuine essence. I continue doing this courageous inner work, committed to self-acceptance over society's norms of what a "normal" woman should be. I'm so grateful Michelle could join me to share her wisdom on this powerful path of inner child healing. For anyone looking to break through what's holding them back from being fully themselves, I can't recommend exploring this enough. Episode 61 - Helpful Tips for Recovery

This episode is a bit of a grab bag where I share helpful tips, tricks and perspectives that can make eating disorder recovery a bit more bearable. First, I recommend writing a letter to yourself detailing how awful the eating disorder makes you feel currently, so you can refer back to it when recovery gets hard. The letter can also articulate your vision for the future without the eating disorder. I emphasise that there is no way around facing your fears in recovery - the only way is through them. But the anticipation of facing fears is often worse than actually doing it. I provide guidance on using empowering language, getting thoughts out of your head and onto paper, humming to reset your nervous system, developing a gratitude practice, and treating yourself with compassion instead of harsh criticism. Other tips I share include: spending time in nature regularly to ground yourself, avoiding eating disorder behaviours like chewing gum, accepting the eating disorder voice without fighting it, acting "as if" you are the recovered version of yourself, and avoiding comparisons to others since every recovery journey is unique. I invite listeners to share any other tips that have helped them. Throughout, I aim to provide a caring, empathetic perspective as someone who has gone through the recovery process herself. My goal is to make the arduous journey feel a bit more manageable and hopeful through these concrete tips and insights. Engage With Me I'd love to hear your thoughts and stories.
