From a ‘walk and talk' in nature to the metaphors of the landscape, coaching outdoors means many things to many coaches. In this episode Helen interviews Anna-Marie Watson, host of the Coaching Outdoors podcast about this multi faceted approach to coaching and how she got started with it.   An ex-Army officer, Anna Marie is never happier than when she is outdoors. She is an accredited coach and coach supervisor who loves to move her coaching away from a Zoom window and the confines of four walls and take her conversations with coachees into nature.   Join Helen and Anna-Marie as they explore coaching through an alfresco lens and offer a different, airier, perspective on coaching conversations that we hope will pique your interest and generate some new thinking about the way you coach.   And of course, if you want to give it a try, you can join us in some outdoor coaching on the eve of our coaching conference in April 2025. https://yourcoachingjourney.com/coaching-conference-2025/   Resources: Website: www.rfmcoaching.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/awatson4/ Twitter: @rfmcoaching Instagram: @rfmcoaching Coaching Outdoors Podcast - https://coaching-outdoors.com/the-podcasts/ Coaching Outdoors Podcast LIVE @ Henley Business School June 2025 - https://www.henley.ac.uk/events/coaching-outdoors-live-2   Enjoy the podcast? This week, Holly and I are chatting utter nonsense as ever, as well as a bit of running chat you'll be pleased to hear, from tales of woe around her poorly foot, to my nerves ahead of a fast approaching trail marathon.I interrupt our gassing to have a lovely chat with Anna-Marie Watson, an ultrarunner like no one I've ever met before. Over the last ten years she's trained and raced across the globe, and has achieved podium positions at multiple ultras, and has competed in three Ironman World Championships. Since the arrival of Covid she's switched her attention to the pursuit of Fastest Known Times (FKTs) from her doorstep in Wiltshire. And this is why I wanted to talk to her, as it's on my doorstep too. I got in touch after watching Eight White Horses, the incredible film that she'd had made of her FKT attempt to run the white horses of Wiltshire. She is astonishing.Holly and I come back after my chat with Anna-Marie to talk through some more of your running annoyances – mostly, it turns out, it's still other people. But because we like to think of ourselves as unbiased (ahem), we also include an email from a listener who has provided the other half of the story, and we find ourselves thoroughly chastised as a result. Maybe we shouldn't hate people so much? Also we discuss our new topic: embarrassing moments, and a listener's personal moment with a pesky front zip fastening. In loving memory of Alison Whybrow, co-founder of the Climate Coaching Alliance. This episode is dedicated to Alison, for being an inspiring, kind, loving, generous and courageous role model. Her passion for our living Earth is an important legacy which she has left behind to shape how coaching can transform the ecological crisis through regeneration. In this episode we explore ‘How do coaches work with nature?' with Professor Peter Hawkins, Anna-Marie Watson, Karen Finn and Elsa Valdivielso Martínez. We discuss how the growing interest in bringing the natural world into our coaching conversations is impacting coaching by asking: Is coaching with nature the latest fad? What do we mean by ‘coaching with nature'? Why are we drawn as coaches and coachees to working with nature? What does it mean to be a student of nature as a coach? How can we turn nature's obstacles, such as inclement weather, into coaching opportunities? How can coaching with nature grow our capacity to deal with the unexpected? How do we let nature and the wider ecology into our coaching? Learn what is involved in coaching with nature from our panel of experts in this episode: Peter Hawkins is Emeritus Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School and founder and Chairman of Renewal Associates.  He is a leading consultant, writer and researcher in leadership and leadership development and an international thought leader in executive teams and systemic team coaching.    Anna-Marie Watson is a certified Performance Coach and Coach Supervisor who loves to escape the confines of four walls and take conversations into nature. She has a Post Graduate Certificate in Applied Coaching from the University of Derby and is certified to use psychometric-based coaching tools. Karen Finn holds an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology. Karen's dissertation led to the development of the Elements Coaching Framework which considers nature within the individual as well as the individual within the ecosystem. Karen is currently studying for a Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice. She encourages coaching clients to be in nature and or to look onto nature during audio coaching sessions. Karen volunteers with Fashion Revolution facilitating discussions on nature-positive textile policy.  Elsa Valdivielso-Martínez is a teacher, certified coach and wellbeing practitioner. Her most notable successes include placing 7th lady (and in the top 100 finishers overall) at the Ultra Tour de Mont Blanc. This 170km trail race has 10,000m of vertical ascent (and descent!) takes the average hiker 10 days to complete whereas Anna-Marie finished in 28 hrs 32 mins!!!She has also completed the notorious Marathon Des Sables twice placing 2nd lady in 2015 and 5th lady in 2018. This multi-stage event in the Sahara Desert is the equivalent of six marathons in six days and described as the”toughest footrace on earth” by the Discovery Channel and”more hellish than hell” by Sir Ranulph Fiennes who completed the event in the same year. She’s also an outstanding high performance coach running her business ‘Reach for More’.There is way more to unpack here – so jump in and listen!LINKS:RFM CoachingWAA Ultra Veloforte – 20% code ‘rfmcoaching‘UTMB Kim Ingleby (TEDx)If you like what you hear you can follow and subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Stitcher. An outstanding performance coach and endurance athlete featured this week. This podcast is all about connecting with nature, and getting out into the great outdoors, even when it’s very cold, or very hot. (Note if you are currently enduring a Northern Hemisphere winter, this is a good one for you.) Endurance athlete and performance coach Anna-Marie Watson has an extraordinary love of the great outdoors. She's completed arctic warfare training with the british military, scaled mountains in Nepal, and last year came second female in the Marathon des Sables, ranked as “toughest footrace on earth”. It's basically six days of running across the Sahara Desert. (I know - sounds horrible!) But what can we learn from her experience, and what does she work on with her clients?

Anna-Marie Watson grew up in an outdoor-loving, adventurous family. The adventures continued as she served nearly a decade in the British Army. Upon leaving the military, she knew she did not want a standard job and "normal" life. So, what did she do? She flew to New Zealand to bicycle the country. This started a series of adventures that led her to competing in the world half Ironman, running (and winning second female) the Marathon De Sables, and many other adventures. And she is not slowing down. She is currently training for The Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc – a 171 km race around Mont Blanc. She offers coaching services as well through her company, Reach For More Coaching. She shares much about what it takes to build an adventure-focused lifestyle. www.rfmcoaching.com
