In this last episode for Series 3, Dr Natalie Lancer and our panel of experts, Sam Isaacson, Professor Nicky Terblanche, and Alex Haitoglou, delve into the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and coaching psychology. They discuss the critical need for coaches to understand technology, the nascent research on AI in coaching, and the rapid advancements in AI. We explore AI's capabilities in coaching as well as potential benefits, concerns and ethical issues. We discuss the importance of coaches adapting to technological changes while maintaining the uniquely human aspects of their practice.  We consider: What is the impact of technology, specifically AI, on coaching psychology? How is human interaction affected by AI? How important is it for coaches to keep up-to-date with AI and technology? Which are the technologies currently shaping the coaching industry? What is the current state of research on AI and coaching? How can coaches balance the use of technology and AI in their practice? How can AI be appropriately integrated into coaching practices? What are the risks, challenges and benefits of integrating AI and technology with coaching? What are some of the ethical considerations around the use of AI in coaching, on which coaches may wish to reflect? What are the needs and challenges for regulation of AI in coaching? Our experts also considered future trends, including conversational AI and immersive technologies. We know that these AI and technological tools will play a significant role in delivering coaching at scale and enhancing remote coaching experiences. Therefore, adapting to technology is not optional; it is essential for effective coaching. AI and the future of mental health with Dr Rachael SkewsWelcome to the Business of Psychology podcast. I'm really excited to be interviewing Dr Rachael Skews, a psychologist, coach, trainer, supervisor, speaker, advisor, researcher, and author. She is an internationally recognized subject matter expert in acceptance and commitment coaching and has a really interesting background working with tech companies, including Headspace, to develop effective and ethical behaviour change initiatives. I saw Rachael giving a webinar for the International Society for Coaching Psychology, and I knew I had to ask her to be a guest on this podcast because I found her insight into how the emerging AI technology could support and enhance our work, so refreshing and so fascinating. I get kind of scared by the unbridled enthusiasm for tech that the tech community often has. But I'm also really uncomfortable with the alarmism and pessimism that the mental health world often defaults to when we're faced with new stuff. So it was really great to hear a balanced view from somebody that really understands the ethical issues and potential pitfalls, but also embraces the excitement of the new technology. With an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology from the University of East London, Daria runs her own coaching practice. She works with clients 1:1 to create meaningful change in their lives.Daria helps people break free from the limiting beliefs society imposes about what relationships 'should' look like, empowering them to create deeper, more meaningful connections. In today's episode, we 'll be diving into a discussion on how to move beyond mediocre, mundane relationships and instead, build ones that are truly fulfilling and flourishing. We start by exploring the inner work required to establish healthy relationships. It all begins with knowing what you deserve and cultivating a strong relationship with yourself. You can't create genuine connections with others until you're whole and fulfilled as an individual, comfortable in your own skin, and confident in your worth. This means recognising your own inherent value, meeting your own needs, and finding contentment in being alone - without relying on someone else to fill any emotional voids. As when you reach this place of self-assurance, your relationships will be driven by true connection, desire, and passion, rather than a need for external validation. From there, Daria shares her insights on how to move past the 'baseline' and seek relationships that truly align with your values and potential. We'll discuss recognising red flags, having the courage to stand up for what you deserve, and the importance of communication and honesty - ensuring you're able to vocalise your needs and desires without fear. Authenticity also plays a role here -  showing up as your true self, wholeheartedly, without wearing a facade to fit someone else's expectations. Only then can you cultivate the kind of relationship that helps you flourish, rooted in mutual respect and true connection.Life Coach Directory profile: https://www.lifecoach-directory.org.uk/lifecoaches/daria-ermolenko Website: https://www.dariaermolenko.com/LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/daria-ermolenko-73b7b3187

In this podcast episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer with Professor Almuth McDowall, Cara Langford Watts, Pippa Simou and Dr. Francoise Orlov, consider the multifaceted nature of neurodiversity coaching encompassing personal neurodiversity journeys, training, supervision and research. The speakers explore the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals, particularly women with ADHD and/or autism, and stress the importance of creating inclusive coaching environments. They delve into the double empathy problem, ethical dilemmas, and practical strategies for support. We discuss: What is neurodivergence and how do neurodiversities show up in coaching? What value can coaching bring to neurodiverse individuals? How can coaches support creating inclusive environments for neurodiverse coaches? What are the challenges and positive developments in neurodiversity coaching? What are the limitations of traditional coaching models when considering neurodiversity? What is the ‘whole sphere' of neurodiversity and how does neurodiversity intersect with other marginalised identities? How can we best understand autistic women's experiences in the workplace? What are the misconceptions faced by women and girls with ADHD? How can coaching strategies support attendance and workplace inclusivity? What specific strategies and techniques can coaches employ when working with neurodivergent coachees? What are the ethical considerations in supporting neurodivergent individuals? Coaches who work with neurodivergent people can be neurotypical or neurodiverse themselves and we discuss the importance of understanding the individual needs and how to co-determine what kind of coach and approach would be best. Coaches and their clients benefit from developments in research and training programmes for neurodiversity coaching as they become more equipped to grasp the complexities and nuances of neurodiversity coaching. In this episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer and Julia Vaughan Smith, Kate Brassington, and Jenny Rogers, explore the nuances of trauma-informed coaching. The panel give thought to the complexities and responsibilities involved in trauma-informed coaching, discussing the internal dynamics of trauma, its influence on coaching practices, and the importance of sensitivity to clients' experiences. The conversation covers the distinctions between coaching and therapy, ethical considerations, and the skills necessary for trauma-informed coaching, such as presence, attunement, and reflective practice. The importance of safeguarding, establishing boundaries, and self-care for coaches is also addressed. We consider: What is trauma and how can we recognise it in our coaching practice? What are the reasons why clients seek trauma-informed coaching? What are the benefits for the client of working with a trauma-informed coach? Where is the overlap between coaching and therapy in addressing trauma-related issues? How can we address trauma in coaching? What are the core qualities and skills needed to coach in a trauma-informed way? How can we train to become a more trauma-informed coach? Do self-care and supervision look different for trauma-informed coaches? How should we contract appropriately for client safety? What are the risks, safe-guards and limits of trauma-informed coaching? In what ways can coaching contribute to trauma healing? Our experts shared their approaches to working with trauma in coaching, for example, understanding clients' backstories without explicitly using the term “trauma”. Trauma can be subtly present in coaching sessions, even when clients may not explicitly seek help for trauma-related issues. Trauma-informed coaching helps clients process trauma in the present and integrate their experiences in safe ways through creating a trusting environment where they feel heard and understood.  Our guests today are: Jenny Rogers is a leader in a new approach to coaching which combines insights from psychotherapy with the pragmatic emphasis on change, drawing on a career in coaching spanning three decades. She works with senior clients in the law, medicine, finance, healthcare, performing arts and media who typically face a major transition in their lives. She is the author of a number of books including ‘Coaching and Trauma', ‘Therapist to Coach', and ‘Daughters: How to Untangle Yourself from Your Mother', exploring the impact of developmental and ancestral trauma on this relationship and how to become untangled. In this episode of The Coaching Psychology Pod, host Dr. Natalie Lancer, with Raul Aparici, an integrative coach and psychotherapist, and Dr. Susan Kahn, a psychodynamic coaching psychologist, engage in a rich discussion about the nuances of psychodynamic coaching. We explore the wounded and celebrated self, emphasising the need for coaches to be self-aware and to understand their own vulnerabilities. The conversation also covers the contributions of influential thinkers such as Winnicott and Bion, and the use of creative techniques in coaching. The importance of ethical boundaries, supervision, and respecting client defenses in deep psychodynamic work is highlighted. We ask: What is psychodynamic coaching? What is the difference between psychotherapy and psychodynamic coaching? Which tools and concepts are useful in psychodynamic coaching? Does goal-setting show up in psychodynamic coaching? What are the challenges in using psychodynamic terminology with clients? Why is containment, referral and maintaining boundaries in the coaching relationship important? What roles do supervision, reflective practice and self-awareness have in psychodynamic coaching work? Who are influential thinkers in the field of psychodynamic coaching? How can we train in psychodynamic coaching?   What are the risks and rewards of psychodynamic coaching? The importance of taking a client-centred approach is emphasised in psychodynamic coaching. It privileges understanding the unconscious and the here and now in coaching relationships, such as unpicking transference and counter transference in coaching sessions. Psychodynamic coaching draws upon a rich lineage of a specific set of assumptions and philosophical foundations, aspects of which we cover in our conversation. They explore the benefits and challenges of applying neuroscience concepts in coaching, emphasising the need for a more-informed understanding for coaches who choose to work in this way. Our guests explain how coaches can stay informed about neuroscience research and offer insights into how to effectively apply neuroscience concepts into coaching sessions. We discuss: •    What can an understanding of neuroscience bring to coaching psychology? •    How is neuroscience research advancing and what is its impact on coaching? •    What is the role of neuroscience in organisational leadership and the workplace? •    How can we use neuroscience to help us understand emotions, cognition, and behaviour when coaching people on change processes? •    How can coaches access reliable neuroscience information and education? •    What are the risks of coaches using neuroscience principles without a solid understanding? •    What neuromyths can we debunk? •    What are the difficulties of integrating complex neuroscience concepts into coaching practice? •    What are some useful neuroscience insights coaches can immediately apply? •    How can we create brain-friendly work environments that foster better habits and heightens creativity? Drawing on neuroscience in our coaching needs to be done in a considered way. We must draw from peer-reviewed research rather than 30-year-old neuroscience ideas that have since been revised, such as the oversimplified 'lizard brain' concept or the left brain-right brain dichotomy. Coaches must ensure their understanding of neuroscience is solid before practically applying these concepts in their practice. Our guests today are: Dr Sarah McKay is an Australian-based (Kiwi-born) neuroscientist, speaker, author and founder of Think Brain, which offers professional development programs in applied neuroscience and women's brain health, and the Neuroscience Academy suite of training programs. Sarah attended Oxford University to complete an MSc and DPhil in Neuroscience. She sums up her thesis with the words, 'Nature, Nurture or Neuroplasticity' and worked on research in spinal cord injury as a post-doc. Sarah is the author of The Women's Brain Book: The neuroscience of health, hormones and happiness. Her second book, Baby Brain: The surprising neuroscience of how pregnancy and motherhood sculpt our brains and change our minds (for the better), was published by Hachette in April 2023. Professor (Dr.) Divine Charura is a practitioner psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council in England and a Chartered Coaching Psychologist. Divine is an Honorary Fellow of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and an adult psychotherapist. Furthermore, his work as an Executive leadership coach, has included working with members of senior leadership teams, within corporate organisations, and private institutions in the UK and abroad.  Divine is also passionate about coach education and how the coaching profession can support the development of coaching practitioners as researchers. He believes that this will enable them to continue to contribute to the coaching evidence base and enhance the development of the coaching profession. Divine has co-authored and edited numerous books. Gry Osnes is a clinically trained psychotherapist and consultant and received her PhD from the University of Oslo and an MSc from HEC/INSEAD. In the domain of organizational leadership, she applies Active Inference Psychology and The Emotional Brain to top leaders and teams. Her expertise includes cognitive and affective neuroscience and the intricate dynamics of human behaviour. Her work revolves around understanding people's roles, their strategic manoeuvres, and the fulfilment of socio-emotional needs in a rapidly evolving world. She has a foundation in a system psychodynamic approach, and brings together insights from cutting-edge research in affective neuroscience. In this podcast episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer hosts a discussion on the role of coach development, self-awareness and the concept of self in coaching. Dr. Julia Carden presents her research on self-awareness, distinguishing it from self-knowledge and self-consciousness. Heather Frost explores the concept of self, drawing on her doctoral research looking at 25 belief systems, highlighting its complexity and the practical impact of understanding a client's concept of self. Dr Elizabeth Crosse details the three developmental strategies that emerged through her doctoral research: the craft, the being and the art of coaching. We examine: •     Why is self-awareness important for coaches? •     What is the difference between self-awareness and the concept of self? •     How are self-awareness, self-knowledge, and self-consciousness linked? •     What are the challenges involved in demonstrating competency vs capacity development? •     How can we utilise the coach's and coachee's self-awareness in coaching practice? •     What do clients' beliefs about self mean for how coaches tailor their coaching? •     How can the three underpinnings of concept of self: stability vs instability, thoughts of self as a unique expression of me vs the self as an illusion, and unity versus multiplicity, be used to generate a concept of self scale? •     How does understanding the concept of self increase the coach's self awareness of beliefs and bias? And how can this benefit coaching outcomes? •     What is the difference between Continuous Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD)? •     Why is it more helpful to think of coach development as a learning journey than a linear progression? •     How do we know what coaching development opportunities to invest in? •     What are some practical ways to develop self-awareness? Self-awareness enables coaches to forge deeper connections with clients and furthermore, it seems we can only take clients as far as we have gone ourselves. We discussed how a focus on preparing the self rather than content, allows coaches to trust their abilities and concentrate on other aspects of their practice. As we wrapped up the episode, the guests shared how engaging and reflecting in formal and informal professional and personal experiences have influenced their development. Our guests today are: Dr Julia Carden is an accredited Master Practitioner Coach with the EMCC, a Professional Certified Coach with the ICF, an accredited coaching supervisor and is a Visiting Tutor at Henley Business School.  Julia was an officer in the Royal Navy, and then specialised in assessment and development centre work, and Learning and Development.  She fundamentally believes that as coaches we must first, and continue to do, the work on self – because who we are is how we coach.  This approach is underpinned by her PhD research which explored the role of self-awareness in the development of the coach. She is a NLP Master Practitioner, an accredited Time to Think Coach, a Fellow of the CIPD, and is licensed to use a range of psychometrics.  Julia completed the Henley MSc in Executive Coaching and Behavioural Change in 2014.   Heather Frost is the Founder of People and Practice, Co-founder of Think Perspective, an accredited coach, Doctoral Researcher and Visiting Tutor at Henley Business School. This conversation goes deep into an unplanned examination of the troubles of the world and arises from these to explore the changing workplace and how we reinvent ourselves. Susan is a Jew who lives in London, and she describes her experience with both the rise of anti-Semitism and the sadness at what is happening in Gaza, as well as her deep desire for justice and peace for Israeli, Jewish, and Palestinian people. She recently returned from visiting Israel and then Poland for the March of the Living 2024 to remember the Holocaust. Simon and Susan share how even talking about these issues seems dangerous and yet so necessary as the world becomes more divided.  The podcast returns to the theme of reinventing ourselves and the changing nature of the workplace. Susan shares a tale from her book reflecting on the need for a much more holistic understanding of the world and ourselves within it. We can easily see ourselves and others in partial ways, which doesn't allow the full expression of our shared humanity. Simon reads a beautiful passage at the end of Susan's book, called On Transience, drawing on Freud's 1916 essay.  This conversation is rich and touches on our deep humanity. Enjoy!   Bio  Susan Kahn is a business psychologist, a speaker, and an academic. She is a chartered psychologist, coaching psychologist, and supervisor with the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Association of Business Psychologists. In this podcast episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer with Dr. Sarah Brooks, Paula Dixon, and Natasha Vorrasi discuss the vision for the future of coaching psychology and the two current routes to becoming a chartered coaching psychologist. We outline the high standards required for chartered status, which is recognised by the British Psychological Society. We answer: What is the value of being a Chartered Coaching Psychologist? How do you become a Chartered Coaching Psychologist? How can the DoCP support Chartered Coaching Psychologists? How is the DoCP advancing professional recognition of the field? How does the DoCP work with our stakeholders? What is the DoCP's current vision and mission? What is the five year plan for the DoCP? How does the DoCP uphold a high level of ethical practice and academic rigour? What are the benefits of being a DoCP member? How can people get involved with the DoCP committee? The Division of Coaching Psychology's vision is to be a global leader in coaching psychology, setting standards for excellence and supporting members' professional growth. In this episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer and her guests, Anthony Eldridge-Rogers, Maria Iliffe-Wood, and Dr. Iain McCormick, explore the significance of self-care, presence, and reflective practice in coaching psychology. They discuss the role of self-care in managing the challenges coaches face. The conversation highlights the importance of meaning-centred coaching and the impact of coaching presence on creating a nurturing environment for clients as well as coaches. Reflective practice is also examined as a tool for professional development. We explore: What is self-care, presence, and reflective practice and how are they linked? What's the relationship between reflective practice and supervision? What is the significance of working with meaning for both clients and coaches? What is whole-person coaching? How can self-care help coaches build strong, co-created relationships with clients? How can we ensure that we are role-modelling self-care to our clients? How can we further develop our ability to be present to our clients? How can we counteract negative self-talk and ‘heroic thinking' in order to be a better coach? What does the research say on the effectiveness of reflective practice? In this conversation we ask what self-care, presence, and reflective practice mean practically for both the coach and the coachee, and the impact that they have on coaching outcomes. Furthermore, we can consider self-care, presence, and reflective practice as tools for professional development, self-improvement for our own well-being and as part of a duty of care to our clients. In this episode Dr Natalie Lancer, with Professor Jonathan Passmore, Xenia Angevin and Kaveh Mir, discuss the realities of running your own coaching practice or working for a large, digital coaching platform. We cover the fundamental questions to help you consider how to find your clients, decide on a niche and philosophy and tap into different coaching markets. We explore: •    What counts more: coach expertise or experience? •    How can coaches be tactical and strategic when navigating the gig economy of coaching? •    How do you develop your own unique coaching identity in a business context? •    What do you want your day-to-day coaching life to look like? •    How has coaching evolved to where we are in the current coaching marketplace? •    What can a coach earn, as a novice or an expert, working for a large digital platform? •    How do you choose whether you want to work for a digital provider and which one? •    What are the selection criteria for coaches that digital platforms use?  •    What are the benefits and constraints when working with a digital coaching provider? •    What are the different roles a coaching psychologist can adopt as part of their portfolio? •    How can coaching become more inclusive as a profession? •    Why is coaching psychology a good second career? The digital coaching landscape is evolving and has arguably transformed coaching from a ‘cottage industry' to a global, scalable enterprise. We query whether coaching education needs to be updated and how coaching standards can be maintained and measured to reflect this new context. Dart Lindsley, the head of global process excellence for people operations at Google, joins the Gartner Talent Angle to share why he thinks work is one of the least designed products on the market today. Dart argues that if HR leaders applied design principles to work they would view employees not as inputs to production but rather as customers buying the experience of work. This reframing of the relationship between the organization and the employee can help managers rethink how to approach their roles and help HR more precisely shape the employee experience. Dart Lindsley leads Global Process Excellence for People Operations at Google. Before joining Google, Dart led the Human Resources Transformation Planning and Analysis organization for Cisco Systems. While at Cisco, Dart founded the business architecture and experience design teams. By focusing these two very different disciplines on questions of talent, Dart and his team came to an important insight: employees can be framed as customers of work, and employers therefore must sell work as a product. This week on the Uncharted Podcast, practice management geek Stephanie Goss is joined by a very special guest, former practice manager and author of the new AAHA press book Lead to Thrive - The Science of Crafting a Positive Veterinary Culture, Josh Vaisman, MAPPCP (PgD). Josh believes all veterinary professionals deserve to feel fulfilled by their work, each and every day. Through his company, Flourish Veterinary Consulting, he combines more than 20 years of veterinary experience, a master's in applied Positive Psychology & Coaching Psychology, and education in Positive Leadership and Positive Organizational Scholarship and a passion for guiding leaders to cultivate work environments in which people can thrive. Fun fact – Josh is also an avid beekeeper who teaches beginning beekeepers how to tend to their buzzing buddies. Josh and Stephanie are looking at Josh's new book through the lens of his practice management road and the journey he took to becoming a positive leader and force for good in our field. They talk about their own success and failures in an unflinchingly honest and vulnerable way. Let's get into this... Buy Josh's New Book - Lead to Thrive here (AAHA MEMBERSHIP NOT REQUIRED TO BUY!) NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPACT OF A POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP - The Wright Brothers. Venus and Serena. Han Solo and Chewbacca. Okay, that last one was (far) far-fetched… but there's no denying that all of these rockstar duos made a lasting impression on us. They innovated, discovered, experimented, and explored the unknown, all to leave the world a bit better than they found it. Veterinary practice leaders can form powerful partnerships just like these. Collaboration in leadership might sound simple, but for any of you that do it on a regular basis, you know it can be anything but easy! Every partnership (like every veterinary practice) is unique and faces very specific challenges. To be successful, you must identify your strengths and weaknesses as individuals and as a pair. By working to further your skills within your respective role, then coming together to work collaboratively with your partner, you can quickly break problems down into manageable pieces and move forward as a team. This December, The Practice Leaders Summit is here to infuse the powerful veterinary partnership of practice owners and practice managers with renewed energy and understanding. You both want a strengthened foundation to guide the practice (or practices!) you lead so that it can continue on to future success. Sign up today!  MPF Discussion with Karla Garcia TeruelFailure And Making a Fresh Start with Karla Garcia Teruel Karla Garcia Teruel is Founder of Growth Empowered a global coaching services firm. Karla's passion is to empower social impact leaders to grow as leaders, overcome challenges and harness opportunities so that they can reach their potential and achieve the impact they seek to have in the world. Her passion for social impact began when she was little, always wanting to help those in need. This interest ultimately lead her to get a BA in Psychology and Sociology as well as to volunteer for several non-profits. However, it wouldn't be until several years later that she would discover impact investing and the existence of for-profit social impact businesses. After 5 years of investing in social startups in Mexico and 2 years of leading a social startup, she discovered that her purpose was to support the development and wellbeing of leaders, thereby bringing together her passion for psychology, personal development, and social impact. This inspired her to go back to school to study a Masters in Coaching Psychology to learn evidence-based tools and theories that could support leaders in their development journey.  Karla brings to her coaching a multicultural sensitivity and global mindset as well as her vast experience with personal and professional transitions and change. From an early age she learned the humility that comes from being out of your comfort zone and navigating transitions. Karla is from Mexico, but by the time she was 18 years of age, she had already lived in 4 countries outside of her own. She has now lived in a total of 9 countries and 13 cities across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia, giving her a unique ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Ever since, Dart has been using tools from marketing and product design to delve into what people really want from work and ways in which companies can build and deliver an extraordinary work-experience product. Welcome aboard. We gotta repeat guest today Aron Croft was here by a year or so ago, and since then he told me that after he, he heard hisself on this episode, he's had to upend his entire life and he moved to a farm. And like, I don't know, I've got 10 acres of land and a chainsaw or something. I'll let him tell you more about that. But Aron Croft has is he was a great guest last time we have him back, and he's always been obsessed with one question, which says, Why can't we get ourselves to do the tasks we wanna do? He dropped outta college twice. He failed his first seven jobs. He ended up broke divorce earning minimum wage, days 33. Then he got diagnosed and then he got an MS in coaching psychology, and he took his neurotypical productivity. His life changed. He built a Fortune 500 career, followed by a six figure coaching business. He teaches ADHD 'ers his contrarian. 8% productivity hat. We'll talk about that. He's at free ADHD training.com and welcome back Aron good to have you, man. [00:02:21] Aron: Thank you, Peter. This is, this podcast is always the most challenging one for me to be a guest on because it's like, it's so hard to be efficient and, and get everything done that you and I want to talk about in your episode. Cap.  [00:02:37] Peter: All right, so let's let you start it. Tell us about yourself. Tell us what you've been doing since the last time you had you on.  [00:02:42] Aron: Yeah, I mean, pretty much just buying 10 acres in a chainsaw. Uh, that's, that's pretty much it, that's taken up most of the last 12 months. Um, what have I been up to really, uh, formalizing, Um, my 8% productivity habit method. Which is really just about how do we get our top task done in just two hours a day. Like, we're not gonna suddenly become sort of full of motivation, willpower, and discipline. Like we've been trying that our whole lives and how do we do that so that we can just stop feeling behind? And, um, that's really what I've been focused on and working with hundreds of ADHDers and, um, now we're just, you know, expanding it out to more. [00:03:20] Peter: Very, very cool. And tell me that I wanna, I wanna talk about living in the middle of nowhere or on 10 acres or whatever. What's that like for someone with a faster brain? [00:03:28] Aron: Uh, it's so delightful because, you know, I can just, my brain is going a mile a minute all the time. It's so exhausting. I would love freedom and a break from it sometimes, but like when I go out, like we've got trails on the property and it's just, we're surrounded by just trees and nature and when I just, when I get outside, Um, it just quiets everything down, um, in nature. And so, yeah. So it's just been, it's been absolutely delightful. Um, and there's also like some mindless tasks like cutting, you know, cutting down branches with a chainsaw on the weekend. Like, I don't need to think. And it's very nice for me to not give myself like, cognitive tasks every once in a while. [00:04:10] Peter: Yep. Are you enjoying, So is there, is there, would you say you're getting more outdoor time than you used? And and is that helping? [00:04:20] Aron: I, you know, honestly I'd say that I'm getting about, I'm getting a little bit more outdoor time, Not a ton more, but the outdoor time absolutely helps. Like I, I mean, part of the reason we made the move is cause I was living in downtown Chicago and all I would do to leave the apartment was just go and walk in nature. And there was this cool nature path near us. So I'd say that I'm, I'm only getting a little more time in nature, but the other thing I really like is, um, space. Uh, so like you can't see it cuz it's off camera, but like, I literally commandeered the entire big, like what room would be a family room in our basement. I put up a 16 foot long whiteboard of just wallpaper, that's whiteboard wallpaper. Um, I mean, I've got like a studio set up with camera and lights and a nice microphone, and I've just got my shit everywhere. Like on the pasted it on the walls, the post it notes galore! I just love the ability to spread out and try to untangle this like super messy brain. [00:05:21] Peter: Very cool. And what would you tell people that you've learned? How have you grown in the past couple years? [00:05:27] Aron: I'd say, I'd say two things. So, um, one is just this idea of like, stop, like, like I, I, I've given up trying to be neurotypical. Um, and you know, that might sound obvious, but I work with a lot of ADHDers and they're still trying to be like what their parents and their peers and their teachers told them to be. And so one is just the freedom to give that up, um, and all the like self-compassion and acceptance that comes with it. And then on the flip side of that, right, and you know this in business, right? Is once I gave that up, um, And I was like, You know what? I'm not gonna be like, So you and I are a little bit different. Like I, I just have the inattentive ADHD symptoms. I wish I had some of the hyperactivity energy stuff, but like, like, I'm like a delicate flower. I burn out after like a few hours of like, I. Of like thinking work. And so I was like, Okay, instead of just saying that, that's like a weakness. How can I just build a productivity system around, around that? And um, so just doing those things and kind of embracing my limitations, quote unquote, has like, turned me into way more powerful than I've ever been.  [00:06:43] Peter: It sounds like it might have. Um, It's interesting. I, I know a lot of people with adhd, they, they change is difficult; , Right? They get into a routine, they get into a habit, and then change becomes sort of a, a, a fear, right? You embrace it.  [00:07:01] Aron: Um, I embrace, I embrace measured change. Okay. Um, because Right. It's, that's important. That's an important distinction. It is. Right. But like, but it, it's like so many things we don't realize that we're actually trying to. For two variables. And we're really looking for balance, right? We want, we want no change, but we also want lots of novelty and variety, right? And so we're, we're kind of, we kind of need to find that right balance. You know, I find so many people with their, uh, Productivity. They're like, I wanna get all my top tasks done. But I also don't wanna be forced into like Right. Having to do it. And I wanna like feel like doing them. Like I don't want it to be painful. And it's sort of like, okay, like if we can make explicit those like trade offs that we're trying to make, we can find a solution. That's the, that sounded theoretical. I feel like I'm just dabbling. Sorry, Peter.  [00:07:53] Peter: No, no, it makes sense. So with that, tell me about the, uh, the 8% productivity habit.  [00:07:58] Aron: Yeah, I know cuz clearly I'm obsessed with it. But , uh, I'm excited to have somebody to talk to about it that isn't my wife. Well, she's excited that I have someone you know today to talk to about it. Um, yeah, I mean, so it was really just, This concept. So the 8% is simply that like 8% of a 24 hour day is two hours. And I was like, All right. If I could just build a productivity habit, that meant that I could get away basically with just doing hard tasks for two hours a day, and then the rest of the day I can kind of just slack off and like wing it. Um, like if I could build something that would be effective, man, that would just give me so much freedom. And, um, so I tried to build it, and then the first phase of it is abandon neurotypical productivity. So all of us have been raised on this like diet of motivation, willpower, and discipline. And like you, Whoever wins is the one who wants it the most. And that's fine if your motivation pathways and willpower pathways work, you know, neurotypically. But for us, or at least for the inattentive, ADHD symptoms that I tend to work with with my students, um, it doesn't translate to action. And so we're left with, we're left with this really unfair conundrum. We either don't take action. Or we have a secret sauce, which helps us take action, which is we just flood ourselves with adrenaline, stress and anxiety, and suddenly we can do a bunch of hard tasks. Right? But it's like so mentally and physically and emotionally training, [00:09:33] Peter: I believe that. It's interesting because it puts us back into that premise of imposters, right? If we're trying to do things in sort of like that one way that's supposed to be done right? You know, like what you said about, about going out and, and, and you know, the person who wins, the person wants the most, there are other ways to win .  [00:09:55] Aron: Amen. My brother. Thank you.  [00:09:56] Peter: You know, I, I, I find that, Well, even this morning I was, I was in a boxing class and I was training. It was one trainer who was training two of us, and we'd each do drills, uh, alternate on drills. And I was watching him, you know, so like 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off. And on my 30 seconds off, I'm supposed to be shadow boxing. And of course I wound up watching this guy. This guy is about. 10 years more experienced boxing than I do. And his punches were so fast, like, so fast, and, and it was like a blur. And I'm just staring at him. And of course the trainer's like, Yo, you wanna actually do something or you wanna just watch? I'm like, Okay, yeah, sorry, but I need to figure out how he got that fast. And he goes, he's trained, He's constantly repeating the motion and doing it over and over again and building those muscles and growing and. You know, so I, I hear what you're saying. It's, it's in that, in that regard. I'm sure he does want it, but I'm sure he is also lost a ton of fights. He doesn't want it the most, he's just doing it every day because it's something that makes him happy and excites him, and he is also getting better at it by default. [00:10:55] Aron: I love, I love that you said that because, um, so like, because I. And just, I'm, I'm just like on like, honestly, like, I'm literally like the most like unproductive person at my core. Um, and I just have like almost no motivational, willpower discipline. So the work around though is kind of, is what you were saying though, that I discovered. It was like, if I just build something in a habit, then it kind of happens without really any motivational will power discipline. Right. And so, It's been this like side door to like sneak into like productivity, uh, without kind of the traditional things is it sounds like you've got some, uh, interest in habits as well. [00:11:42] Peter: Well, I've always found that, you know, I always, because for ADHD I would always gravitate back in school. I always gravitated toward the things I doing because I enjoyed doing them and I. Specifically, One time I got off, I, I was up, I would always ride my bike, and then one time, one year I get into skateboarding, right? And I, I would skateboard, skateboard, skateboard for like a year and a half, two years, everywhere. I went to skateboard. Skateboard. And then one day case got back on my bike. And I was shocked at how much stronger my legs were. It wasn't that I'd been working out my legs, it's that I'd been skateboarding, I was working out my legs, but it didn't occur to me as that, Right. The things that you love to do are the things you naturally get better at because you're doing 'em so much because you love them. The the downside for ADHD is sometimes you have to do things you don't love and you still have to do them.  [00:12:27] Aron: Well, and so the, the upside, so I agree with you and the upside is, um, so look, I believe, and, and again, all with the caveat that a lot of the things I'm talking about are limited to people that have the inattentive symptoms or combined adhd, Right? Um, but. You know, the cool part is that I believe so many people, and this is entrepreneurs, this is working professionals I've talked to, like, we're looking for something that would have like the biggest bang for our buck. Um, kind of like on the entrepreneur where they're like, I don't want to just trade dollars for hours. Like, Right, or hours for dollars. Like, I want something that's scalable and like, I want, I want like leverage effectively is what? You know, working professionals and stuff are saying. And um, the cool part is that I found is. A lot of productivity stuff focuses on like overhauling your life, right? Like you're gonna write down all your to-do lists and write down goals in every area, and then you're gonna time box your schedule and you know you're gonna do all these things. You're gonna make this color coded thing. And the reality is that there's a lead domino in there, which is if you just push this one piece, all these other productivity things fit, which is the piece that you just mentioned, which is. We don't suck at all productivity. We're great at like fire alarm tasks. Exactly. We're even decent at like busy tasks. And the reason we're decent at them is because the area that we suck and that if we improve is the lead domino that knocks all the other dominoes down is in doing tough tasks. And if we can get, build a habit of doing tough tasks every day, suddenly they don't feel tough and our comfort zone expands.  [00:14:13] Peter: Yep, a hundred percent. Tell us how we could find you.  [00:14:17] Aron: Well, you could just drive out to Michigan and look for a house.  [00:14:22] Peter: Quit being a smart ass Aron, how can we find you? .  [14:13 - How can people find more about you? Web: hiddenADHD.com ALSO  freeadhdtraining.com Socials: @aroncroft on Twitter  @HiddenADHD on Facebook  INSTA  YouTube and hidden_adhd on TikTok ] [00:14:24] Aron: All right. Alright. Um, I would say, I would say just go to free adhd training.com. I literally was like, How could I come up with the easiest to remember URL in the history of URLs? Not that help a reporter out.com isn't also memorable . But anyway, free adhd training.com and uh, I go into like a full training. It's free on the 8% productivity habit, what it is, how you can do it, um, and really break it all down with like pretty graphics and all the, my pretty bald head and all these fun things. [00:14:57] Peter: Always love having you, Aron bald head and all. It was a pleasure. Enjoy your home, enjoy your 10 acres and your, your chainsaw.
