Growing up with a father and brother who were “never wrong” left Yannick Jacob seeking a life that wasn't about right answers. That led him to coaching, and more specifically to existential coaching, a space where humanity's oldest and most profound questions – and the plethora of answers to them – can be explored at a deeper level.Yannick is an existential life and leadership coach, a positive psychologist, and the programme director of the Accredited Certificate in Integrative Coaching (ACIC) at the School of Positive Transformation. In this episode of The Coach's Journey, he shares what he learned about himself in order to hear his calling and live his truth as someone driven to explore the whole spectrum of what life has to offer.Host Neil Mackinnon helps Yannick to illuminate the links between his many passions, such as existential philosphy and DJing, and to demonstrate how integrating his variety of interests enriches his all areas of his work.Yannick also discusses his groundbreaking Coaching Lab, which offers the chance to witness highly experienced coaches live at work, and Rocket Supervision, which provides coaches with the support they need to practice at the top of their game. This episode will resonate with anyone who wants to feel empowered to shake up traditional coaching paradigms and create a practice that feels authentic and energising, as Yannick brings his remarkable breadth of experience and expertise to bear on some of the most fundamental questions we face as coaches and as human beings. In this episode, Yannick and Neil Mackinnon also talk about:Courageous choices, and how embracing discomfort can help to build meaningEnlarging your sphere of influence to enable people to connect with youThe power of being financially committed to something, and the benefits to your clients of raising your feesWhen we should be brave enough to challenge the traditional frame and share more of ourselves with our clientsYannick issues a rallying cry to everyone in the coaching space to frame their space, sculpt the approach that works for them, and lean into their passion for their own way of doing things.THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT THAT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN:Rocket Supervision www.RocketSupervision.com Coaching Lab www.GoCoachingLab.com Yannick's Nuggets (mailing list) https://gocoachinglab.com/nuggetsDr Nash Popovich https://www.personalwellbeingcentre.org/nash-popovicMartin Seligman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_SeligmanRS Lazarus on the Positive Psychology movement https://www.researchgate.net/publication/232977091_Does_the_Positive_Psychology_Movement_Have_LegsSoren Kierkegaard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%B8ren_KierkegaardJean-Paul Sartre https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Paul_SartreNew School of Psychotherapy and Counselling https://nspc.org.uk/Christopher Neubert https://human-edge.com/team/christian-neubert/The Academy of Executive Coaching https://www.aoec.com/An Introduction to Existential Coaching: How Philosophy Can Help Your Clients https://www.aoec.com/Yannick's book, An Introduction to Existential Coaching: How Philosophy Can Help Your Clients Live with Greater Awareness, Courage and Ownership https://www.amazon.co.uk/Introduction-Existential-Coaching-Philosophy-Awareness/dp/0367139995Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory https://www.simplypsychology.org/bandura.htmlCoaching Starter Kit https://rocketsupervision.com/coaching-starter-kit/Erik de Haan http://www.erikdehaan.com/Peter Hawkins https://thoughtleadership.org/staff-member/peter-hawkins/Montessori https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montessori_educationThe Coach's Journey Flywheel https://www.animascoaching.com/about-animas/our-team/nick-bolton/Nick Bolton, Animas https://www.animascoaching.com/about-animas/our-team/nick-bolton/Heron's six categories of intervention https://challengingcoaching.co.uk/herons-six-categories-of-intervention/Nancy Kline https://www.timetothink.com/nancy-kline/ICF https://coachingfederation.org/

Today we're heading to a new location for me, at least, Tel Aviv Israel, and meeting up with Team Architect and aidra.ai founder and CEO, Ms. Daria Rudnik. Daria is a fellow systemic team coach, having studied together under the guidance of professors Peter Hawkins and David Clutterbuck. Today, Daria helps ambitious leaders scale their impact by elevating their teams. She does this through team and leadership coaching, organizational consulting, assessment, and her AI assistant. Through her 15-year career, Daria has helped leaders create high performing work cultures for more than 5000 people, ranging from fast-growing startups to Fortune 500 companies. Here are three examples of results Daria has helped to shape. First, a B2G tech startup established a high-performing distributed sales team across multiple countries and integrated a new CEO, leading to increased sales and a more cohesive team. Second, a telecom company accomplished a growth multiple of four without expanding its headcount by restructuring organizational processes and bolstering team communication and collaboration. And then finally, a hardware company successfully transitioned to become a market leader in the retail tech space by redesigning its organizational processes and providing leadership coaching for its tech executives. In our conversation, Daria supports us in addressing the question of what makes a high performance, value-creating remote team and unlocks the power of several tools that she integrates into her own process. Daria and I see a future of team empowerment at the core of successful company strategies. Visit our website to access the full transcript, guest links and episode notes - Coaching 4 Companies
This is an extraordinary story on many levels – about the power and sanctuary of music, about what it took for bands to get noticed in the ‘70s, about how a teenager obsessed with King Crimson eventually joined the band and about the struggles of “a rabid Henry Cow fan trying to get on Top of the Pops”. Jakko Jakszyk is a fabulous storyteller, both in his memoir ‘Who's the Boy With The Lovely Hair?' and on this podcast with the two of us. Among the highlights … … two things musicians need to know. … why the divisive appeal of music and comedy is so similar. … life in a band where “Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights”. … “Who'll be the singing Jack Russell?” Doing voice-overs as a piece of toast and a baked potato with a Yorkshire accent. ... the quaint Englishness of Soft Machine, Caravan and King Crimson and why they were like “a holiday resort no-one knew about”. … why there are even more idiots in advertising than the music business. … the rigours of the Melody Maker Folk Rock Contest, aged 17, judged by Tommy Vance, Bob Harris and Brian May of Queen. … the militant wing of the Adrian Belew Fan Club. … Dave Robinson's sage advice after telling him he was “unfashionably heterosexual”. ... why Robert Fripp is more Miles Davis than Frank Zappa and the longest audition in history. …the complications of the King Crimson reunion caused by one person who shall remain nameless – “though let's call him Greg Lake”. … “two screaming lead guitars and a trumpet, what could possibly go wrong?” … and working with Pete Sinfield, Peter Hawkins, Sam Brown and Nigel Planer. Some 4.5 million children are not attending school in Yemen, where Government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebels have been at war for a decade.Peter Hawkins, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Yemen, said the “catastrophic situation” is a “time bomb” as the country could possibly have a generation of citizens who are unable to read and write. He told UN News's Khaled Mohamed that UNICEF has been working to rehabilitate damaged schools and to support teachers and children in returning to the classroom, especially girls, though he acknowledged it is not enough. But first, Mr. Hawkins refuted recent “baseless” Houthi allegations that UN agencies and partners have been colluding to destroy Yemen's education system.

Acute malnutrition is rapidly increasing among young children in Government-controlled areas in Yemen, UN agencies and partners warned in a report published this week. The ongoing conflict between Government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebels, is driving the surge, along with other factors such as economic collapse, displacement and social disruption. The report warned that all 117 districts in Government-controlled areas surveyed will experience “serious” levels of malnutrition or worse during the lean season from July to October. The situation has been further compounded by recent flooding. To find out more, UN News's Abdelmonem Makki spoke to Peter Hawkins, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Representative to Yemen, who spoke from the capital, Sana'a.

Jonathan Harker, while traveling to meet the Count, pondered gravely at the reactions of the peasants around him, as they murmur indistinctly about the supernatural horrors that await him. The peasant coachman hurried the horses over the picturesque terrain so as to arrive at the rendezvous point a full hour early. He was foiled, however, when the Count's coachman, a man of mysteriously prodigious strength, met them regardless, and took Jonathan away to the castle. The ride in Dracula's coach was filled with wonders and horrors as blue flames appeared the woods and wolves assailed their coach. Jonathan discovered that the coachman was driving him in circles to unknown purpose. The elderly Count Dracula met Jonathan at the castle, offering him dinner and hospitality. He surprised Jonathan with a letter from his employer, Peter Hawkins, recommending Jonathan and praising his discretion. While the Count did not eat with Jonathan, he kept him company through supper, and by the time Jonathan had concluded with his meal and conversation, it was early morning. For me, all my work is about “not business as usual”, because I think I'm conscious of the challenges of supporting a system that I think is broken. Join coach, supervisor and author, Eve Turner, in conversation with Yannick Jacob as they explore the role of coaching supervision. In this wide-ranging discussion, Eve and Yannick explore: The role of coaching supervisionUsing recorded sessionsClarifying supervisionThe three functions of supervisionTechniques for generating supervisory awarenessReflective practice skillsThe importance of the contract in coachingTime To Think supervisionBringing the system into the roomMaking supervision funClimate and ecological-crisis coachingWhat is transformation in coaching About Eve Turner Eve has had three careers, in music, broadcasting and now coaching and supervision. She sees their links through her interest in communication, collaboration and interrelationships. As a classical guitarist and then a willing, if not very able, orchestral conductor, Eve learned how the whole can be so much more than the sum of the parts and how the quality of the communication and relationships affected the outcome. She was a journalist, senior leader and internal coach in the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) before setting up her own practice. Eve has won many awards for her research, writing, coaching and supervision. She does extensive volunteering alongside a busy practice: this includes co-founding and being part of the coordinating group for the Climate Coaching Alliance, founding and co-leading the Global Supervisors' Network, and as immediate past chair of the coaching and supervision professional body APECS, and volunteering for the AC and EMCC. Eve's books include ‘Ecological and Climate-conscious Coaching: A Companion Guide to Evolving Coaching Practice' (2023) co-edited with the late Alison Whybrow, Josie McLean and Peter Hawkins, ‘The Ethical Coaches' Handbook' (2023) co-edited with Wendy-Ann Smith, Jonathan Passmore, Yi-Ling Lai and David Clutterbuck, ‘Systemic Coaching'(2020) with Peter Hawkins, and ‘The Heart of Coaching Supervision – Working with Reflection and Self-care' (2019) co-edited with Stephen Palmer.

We turn to 'A Poetical Guide to the Isle of Mann', written by Rev Thomas Stephen and published in 1832. He wrote in the Manx language as well, but we hear from his work in English this time. Thomas Stephen was Vicar of Kirk Patrick for 15 years and was also Vicar-General - though some parts of his work perhaps belie his day job! In our story in Manx, Count Dracula is pressing Jonathan Harker to write to his employer, Peter Hawkins, and to anyone else he wishes - but with a clear threat not to write too much. In loving memory of Alison Whybrow, co-founder of the Climate Coaching Alliance. This episode is dedicated to Alison, for being an inspiring, kind, loving, generous and courageous role model. Her passion for our living Earth is an important legacy which she has left behind to shape how coaching can transform the ecological crisis through regeneration. In this episode we explore ‘How do coaches work with nature?' with Professor Peter Hawkins, Anna-Marie Watson, Karen Finn and Elsa Valdivielso Martínez. We discuss how the growing interest in bringing the natural world into our coaching conversations is impacting coaching by asking: Is coaching with nature the latest fad? What do we mean by ‘coaching with nature'? Why are we drawn as coaches and coachees to working with nature? What does it mean to be a student of nature as a coach? How can we turn nature's obstacles, such as inclement weather, into coaching opportunities? How can coaching with nature grow our capacity to deal with the unexpected? How do we let nature and the wider ecology into our coaching? Learn what is involved in coaching with nature from our panel of experts in this episode: Peter Hawkins is Emeritus Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School and founder and Chairman of Renewal Associates. He is a leading consultant, writer and researcher in leadership and leadership development and an international thought leader in executive teams and systemic team coaching. Anna-Marie Watson is a certified Performance Coach and Coach Supervisor who loves to escape the confines of four walls and take conversations into nature. As a former British Army Officer, she has worked in challenging environments from snowy Arctic tundra to hot and sandy deserts though currently resides within the rolling countryside of Wiltshire. She has a Post Graduate Certificate in Applied Coaching from the University of Derby and is certified to use psychometric-based coaching tools. Karen Finn holds an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology. Karen's dissertation led to the development of the Elements Coaching Framework which considers nature within the individual as well as the individual within the ecosystem. Karen is currently studying for a Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice. She encourages coaching clients to be in nature and or to look onto nature during audio coaching sessions. Karen volunteers with Fashion Revolution facilitating discussions on nature-positive textile policy. Elsa Valdivielso-Martínez is a teacher, certified coach and wellbeing practitioner. Small Patient Populations Pose Unique Challenges for Safety Scientists “These are diseases that are not often taught in medical school,” said Peter Hawkins, Senior Director, Head of Rare Genetic Disease Risk Management at Agios Pharmaceuticals, about the types of diseases he and his team are working to cure. Mr. Hawkins joined the Safety Signals Podcast for a discussion on the specific safety challenges faced by sponsors developing medicines for very small patient populations. The episode covered a wide variety of topics, including: The importance of real-world data in understanding rare disease patients The need to look at quality of life metrics Reasons why safety scientists should actively participate in clinical trial design With limited data available, Hawkins acknowledged that he and his team look at any information they can get to understand what patients are going through, and whether or not new safety signals are from a drug they're studying, from the disease, or something else, such as comorbidities. “Understanding the whole world this patient lives in is essential to making sure that the patient makes the right decision,” he said. The views of the hosts and guests featured on Safety Signals are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Saama or the individual companies for which the guests may work.
The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund has lamented over the rising cases of Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria. UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Peter Hawkins says female genital mutilation remains widespread in Nigeria. With an estimated 19.9 million survivors, Nigeria accounts for the third-highest number of women and girls who have undergone FGM worldwide. He stressed that the case is prevalent among Nigerian girls aged 0-14 and an estimated 86 percent of females were cut before the age of 5, while 8 percent were cut between ages 5 and 14.

“The ecology is still in the room; we are just not paying attention to it.” Professor Peter Hawkins, leading global thought leader, joins George Warren in an inspiring episode drawing our climate coaching series to a close. Peter shares his thoughts on the challenges the world faces and how coaching needs to change to be future-fit and positively contribute to the ecological and social crises.

In this weeks episode Rachael & John are joined by fellow Coach and future orientated Josie Mc Lean. (https://www.linkedin.com/in/josie-mclean/) They discuss just how we can all get involved in promoting the climate change initiative at an organisational level. It’s no secret that leaders are turning their attention and expanding their horizons towards a more sustainable future. For some this a paradigm shift, for others it’s a natural progression that can no longer be ignored. They discuss how coaches can be involved, spring-boarding off the Climate Coaching Alliance Org 24 hour world-wide event on 4th March 2021 (https://www.climatecoachingalliance.org/) which works on the Eco-Phase Cycle, which is based on Dr Peter Hawkins’ (https://www.renewalassociates.co.uk/) model from eco-curious to eco-active. To meet people where they are at - be it Curious, Informed, Aware, Engaged or Active. To embark on a more sustainable leadership approach Josie recommends: Pick your fights, there are some battles you cannot win Find friends to work with; you’ll be stronger together Don’t ever underestimate how much can be achieved with a small group of people, when you start taking action on what you really want to achieve Josie’s Leadership Essentials: (1:01:50) This is not an “add-on” we can no longer ignore human behaviour towards the planet. This is now part of the business environment we are in. Embrace the uncertainty - stay with your vision and get comfortable in moving towards safer uncertainty (https://bit.ly/2LO4bAy) Keep asking just “How adaptable can we be?” Not to adapt once, but to adapt over and over.
In this episode we are joined by two incredibly experienced supervisors, Eve Turner and Carole Davidson, to explore why supervision is so important in coaching. The ICF defines coaching supervision as a collaborative learning practice that continually builds the capacity of the coach through reflective dialogue for the benefit of both coaches and clients. Supervision provides coaches with a safe place in which they can reflect on their practice and receive coaching about their coaching approach and support with any challenges, difficulties or ethical considerations. We explore how critical supervision is for coaches working in organisations (it is starting to be used as part of the coach selection criteria), both for external coaches and those internal coaches who often face a challenge regarding boundaries as a result of working inside the organisation. About our guests: Eve Turner is an Accredited Master Executive Coach and Coach Supervisor, and co-founder of the Climate Coaching Alliance. She is also chair of APECS, founder of the Global Supervision Network and author of two books; 'The Heart of Coaching Supervision: Working with Reflection and Self-Care' with Stephen Palmer, and more recently; 'Systemic Coaching: Delivering Value Beyond the Individual‘ with Peter Hawkins. Carole Davidson is an Accredited Supervisor and Senior Coach-Mentor Practitioner and Assessor with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and has extensive experience as a supervisor, especially of internal coaches. She is the author of the book Flying Solo Under 30'. Professor Peter Hawkins, director of Renewal Associates, explains how ecological coaching can make leadership fit for the 21st century – by bringing ecology into the boardroom, quite literally. By reframing the relationship between stakeholders, from customers and coaches, to partners, leaders can move from eco anxiety to being eco informed. Then they can take responsibility for the changes they make and the power they have to create those changes.

The value of a high-performing team has long been recognized. 90 percent of investors think the quality of the management team is the single most important non-financial factor when evaluating an IPO and this is why the value of high performing teams has long been recognized. Its importance is not about to diminish as digital technology reshapes the workplace. Teams look different than they did 10 years ago. They may be virtual and diverse as we focus on a global economy. The traditional type of employee contract has changed from permanent to temporary or freelance and partnerships have become more important in business. These all impact teams. These changes do not be obstacles to putting together high performing teams. Building a team is not only about finding energetic, ambitious and capable people. We are going to discuss what makes a high-performing team “click”.

Introduction: John Hill is an accredited Executive Coach and Training specialist. He is a faculty member with the Academy of Executive Coaching and teaches on their Master Systemic Team Coaching Diploma. He has two particular interests in his work, 1. Build awareness systemically and 2. Develop personal and collective psychological capital in groups, teams and organisations. Podcast episode summary: John illuminated the important systemic nature of teams. He littered this show with many references and stories showcasing what it means to think systemically. He shared why he thinks thinking systemically is important and how it shapes the work and behaviours on teams. He also demonstrated the interlink between emotions, psychology and transformational change. Sometimes, according to John we simply have to look awry and with curiosity to get at different results. Noteworthy points of discussion We are all each of us affected by the many and varying systems in which we live Maybe we have to do a better job of reintegrating the many disparate ways we look at the world John cited the increasing need for teams today, teams are the units of currency or building blocks for great organisational performance John shared a metaphor that describes his approach to team coaching. He sees teams as rivers in flow with a direction and many influences in the form of tributaries. As a team coach he is the rock that the team needs to navigate, be with and be disrupted by. John described his process of engagement with teams, a model used by Professor Peter Hawkins called the CID-CLEAR model. John uses himself as an instrument of change. He is pragmatic, down to earth and real and he helps the team clarify their expectations together, the outcomes they wish to achieve in a very vivid manner. All teams are complex. “There is nothing more complicated than when it is looked at with fresh eyes doesn't become more complicated” Donella Meadows A survey conducted by Conference Board of New York showed how job satisfaction and engagement at work was affected by feelings, how we feel about our manager and how we feel about the people with whom we worked largely impacts engagement. John helps teams become intelligent about their emotions; he also helps people become adept at looking at their thinking. He often employs a CBT approach to thinking about thinking. He described the Ellis model or ABCDE model, where if we can dispute the beliefs (the B in the model) we can change our thinking. Similarly, John shared the work of Lex Sisney, an organisational coach who says, “it is not a problem to be solved but a polarity to be managed.” John described his approach to team engagement which often encompasses some form of somatic work and embodied work for insight and thinking Team Coaching is a blend of facilitation, coaching, teaching and systems sight According to Professor Alice Roberts the evolution of Homo Sapiens versus Neanderthals amounted to an ability by Homo Sapiens to collaborate. The degree of change happening today requires greater levels of collaboration. Teams need to come together to explore the skills, experiences and judgements that they can better use together than apart. Katzenbach and Smith is a good book and great primer for people to consider the work of teams. John shared his view that teams need to treat their purpose as if it were a baby to be nurtured. He also said we could think about changing the word purpose from a noun into a verb and start thinking about how we are purposing in our meetings, time together etc… Teams need to think more systemically and ask questions such as “what would our stakeholders ask of us” what does the future generation require of this team today?” Resources: the following include the resources we alluded to over the course of our conversation Donella H. Professor Peter Hawkins is an author, consultant and researcher in leadership cultural change and organisational learning. He calls himself a paradigm buster - and he does just that - as he talks about the necessary move from individual hero leadership to a collective leadership that is able to communicate and collaborate across multiple and increasingly complex systems. His research shows that real leadership development comes from experience and challenges on the job and that organisations focusing on a clear long-term purpose perform better than those that focus on short-term profit.
Introduction: This show illuminates the challenges facing leaders and teams as they move further into the 21st century. The challenge becomes how do we work with the future and how to we work in systems. Professor Peter Hawkins shares his research and argues the case for a revolution in how we think about teams, how we think about Leadership and how we operate as Team Coaches. Professor Peter Hawkins is a professor of leadership at Henley Business School, Visiting Professor University of Bath, and the University of Oxford Brookes and Chairman of Renewal Associates. He is a leading consultant, coach, writer and researcher in organisational strategy, leadership, Culture change and team and board development. He is a prolific writer and author of many best selling books and papers in the fields of Board and Team Coaching, Leadership and Change. His books include Leadership team Coaching (3rd Edition), Leadership Team Coaching in Practice and Coaching, Mentoring, and Organisational Consultancy a book he co-authored with Nick Smith. Podcast episode summary: This conversation started by talking about eldership, beyond leadership and how we enable others. He spoke about how important and critical it is for teams to think in terms of collective leadership. He opined that Leadership development is still stuck in the 20th-century building 20th-century leaders rather than 21st century Leadership. Heroic Leadership is dead long live the team is one of the many articles we discussed to shape a conversation around the need for collective leadership. Noteworthy points of discussion The days of the CEO being the only point of contact with the various interfaces of the organisation are over –it is a collective job In the next five years, organisations are going to be employing fewer people, but the number of people they are partnering with will increase – how to get at collective leadership across boundaries? Increasingly leadership is moving away from how to lead “my team”, “my function”, “My organisation” and more about how to partner well Brexit is an example of doing it wrong- How PM May spent two years in a win/lose framed argument asking the wrong question MIndset change required to think in terms of living on multiple teams simultaneously 100% of the time All challenges lie in the connections between interfaces and not in the parts The Pace of Change is such that strategizing and managing changes is a perpetual process It is the purpose that creates a team and not the team creating a purpose Teams must ask “what can we uniquely do that the world of tomorrow needs?” Peter described his model: The 5 Disciplines of successful Team Practice Discipline One –Co-Missioning: Ensuring a clear commission for the team and contracting on what it must deliver-The WHY Discipline Two- Clarity: What can the team do together that is added value in service of the declared purpose. Here the team articulates clear team KPI's, Objectives & Roles –The WHAT Discipline Three-Co-creating: - How the team will be together, team agreements, norms etc. Discipline Four- Connecting: Engaging with all stakeholders Discipline Five- Core Learning: Building individual and collective capacity to be future fit. Several case studies and clients were referenced in this episode where Professor Peter Hawkins described his approach to working with Executive Teams and Boards and their nested systems. There needs to be a revolution in coaching and as team coaches, we need to “get out of the closet” and stop thinking with the boundaries of the team. Gender, “We Q” and the Urgent Need for Collaborative Intelligence In Organizations with Professor Peter Hawkins It's my contention, that, in spite of what's been happening between the United States and North Korea, Syria, and that the Doomsday Clock is at 2 minutes to midnight, arriving at a world without armed conflict is possible in our life times. This is not just my hunch but based on some serious work by some serious people many of whom have been or will be interviewed on this podcast (John Horgan, “The End of War”, Episode 10, William Ury (“Getting to Yes” and “Getting to Peace”), Dr. Riane Eisler, “The Chalice and the Blade” (Episode 28), and Nobel Nominee, Scilla Elworthy, “The Business Plan for Peace” (upcoming guest). It's also my contention that the single greatest key to a more harmonious world is “getting gender right” in family systems and in organizations, the two building blocks of our world. In this current episode of The Peacebuilding Podcast: Bridging the Divide, it's my great pleasure to explore the connection between organizational culture and a more peaceful world with Professor of Leadership, Peter Hawkins from the Henley Business School in the UK. Peter has been working with companies for decades on leadership culture and change initiatives. He is a leading expert in what he calls Systemic Team Coaching which I was lucky enough to receive training from him in. I think of his models as kind of the infrastructure for building collaboration in systems, very much like the extensive education I received from John Carter and the Gestalt Organizations and Systems Design Program. I was drawn to interviewing Peter not just because of his stellar professional credentials but because of the human being and man that he is. I appreciate how he gets senior executives from the very largest companies to invoke all of the stakeholders of their decisions including their collective grandchildren and “more than human world”. As he likes to say, he gets people thinking "forward, back, outside, in". Peter is brilliant and deep, and I think you will find it well worth your time to listen to him. Here are some highlights of the episode. -Peter will address with great sophistication my question about whether there is a relationship between getting gender and diversity right inside organizations and creating a more harmonious world; -He will address the idea that the era of heroic leadership is dead and gone, and that we face an urgent need to develop collective leadership and collaborative intelligence; -He will talk about what men and women can do together as leaders in our places of work that we couldn't do apart, and why this kind of leadership is so critically important for our organizations today; -He will speak directly to men in organizations, whether they are leadership or rank and file, and provide valuable guidance about how to think and proceed in the #MeToo era. -He will address the need for companies to rethink their career design models, which he says are designed for twentieth century white men, not twenty-first century human beings; -He will address a question that has always nagged at me, about how companies can get gender right and still stay competitive -- in other words, not feel like they're doing the right thing, only to fall behind in a hyper-competitive world; -And lastly, he will talk poignantly about the impact of absentee fathers, either because of wars or work and offer some profound words of wisdom to guide us as we go forward into this complex and exciting future together. I know you will enjoy this deeply intelligent and thoughtful man talk about issues that are so critical for our time.
It's all very exciting at the moment with our trip just 4 weeks away. But my fascination with leadership and leadership development hasn't gone away! This week I'm off to Switzerland to work with a team there on their leadership and I will continue to do this kind of work even when we're on the road. There's a need for leadership in our world greater than maybe at any time in the past, and a significant leadership vacuum. But how do we help people become better leaders? Is what we are doing today working? Not according to today's guest, Professor Peter Hawkins. Part-time Executive Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School, where he is researching next generation leadership and leadership development, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Bath and Oxford Brookes and founder and Emeritus Chairman of Bath Consultancy Group and Renewal Associates, he is also the author of numerous books and a groundbreaking report called Tomorrow's Leadership and the Necessary Revolution in Today's Leadership Development. https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/assets.henley.ac.uk/legacyUploads/pdf/exec-ed/Research_Report_-_Tomorrow_s_Leadership_and_the_Necessary_Revolution_in_Today_s_Leadership_Development.pdf If you're in HR this report and today's interview should be required research! But even if you're not there's plenty here about the future world we are going to be living in and how we rethink assumptions and habits of the past. Please stay in touch on Instagram, twitter, facebook and by email (blaire@thatpeoplething.com) with your thoughts and ideas on this subject or anything else related to leadership and integrating your work and your life!
