PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ENCOUNTERED TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH THE AUDIO IN THE RECORDING OF THIS EPISODE. AS A RESULT, IT DOES SOUND GLITCHY. WE APOLOGIZE. What is unique and distinctive about the Christian identity, perception of reality, and our experience of what it is to be a human being? How do we experience human sexuality and understand how it is shaped by the grace of God or how it can be distorted by sin or demonic provocation?  If we are honest, we would have to say that it is the popular culture, modern psychology, and politics that shape our understanding of these things rather than an encounter with the living God. It is Christ who reveals to us what it is to be a human being made in the image and  likeness of God. Beyond this, it is the Grace that comes to us through baptism, the Eucharist, and the gift of the Holy Spirit that shapes are perception of reality most fully. The ascetic life, driven by our desire for God, seeks to remove the impediments to our understanding what it is to be a human being and “fully alive.” We are not simply seeking psychological peace of mind or self understanding. Rather, we are seeking to understand the mystery of our existence and our dignity and destiny in Christ.  These realities should sharpen and intensify our sensibilities and how we engage in our day-to-day life and relationships. The writings and actions of the desert fathers may seem distorted, masochistic or misogynistic.  Yet, upon deeper reflection we discover they had a fuller experience and understanding of life. One Saint said: “HE who ceases to pray is no longer a human being.” In other words, when we turn away from God, we lose sight of ourselves and the truth. Our focus and our vision is turned downward, like animals, only seeing what is before us and what can be consumed or used to satisfy our own desires. The life and the writings of the fathers cry out to us saying: “See your dignity, O man. See your glory in Christ your Redeemer and embrace your true identity in Him.” --- Text of chat during the group: 00:11:32 Bob Čihák, AZ: P 220, paragraph starting "After these words...." 00:27:32 Sr. Charista Maria: So true Fr. In this final message of the "Be Christian" series, we explore the early church's powerful example of faith and service, diving into how their commitment to unity and generosity set the foundation for Christianity's growth. From Jesus' prediction of the church's resilience to Paul's teachings on being an active part of the body of Christ, this sermon challenges us to reflect on our role in the church today. Will we simply consume, or will we engage and serve, ensuring the church continues to thrive for future generations?

In this continuation of our "Be Christian" series, we're tackling a topic that's often met with discomfort: money and generosity, but don't tune out just yet. Today's message isn't about what the church wants from you, but rather what Jesus wants for you. We'll explore how the early church exemplified radical generosity, trusting God with everything they had, and how their faith fueled a movement that changed the world. Through personal stories, biblical examples, and a look at our own journey at Rocky, we'll discover why mastering our money is not just a financial decision, but a spiritual one. Join us as we explore how trusting God with our finances can lead to freedom, abundance, and a powerful impact on our community and beyond.

We're diving deeper into our "Be Christian" series by exploring the powerful story of the early church—a time when being a follower of Christ was not only counter-cultural but life-threatening. We'll take a closer look at the unwavering faith of the early believers, who, despite persecution, spread the gospel with boldness and conviction. This week, we focus on the dramatic conversion of Saul to Paul, a man once determined to destroy the church, who became one of its greatest champions. We'll also examine the challenges the early church faced as it expanded, especially the controversy surrounding the inclusion of Gentiles. As we reflect on these stories, we'll confront a critical question: Are we as a church making it easy or difficult for people to find Jesus? Join us as we seek to understand what it truly means to "Be Christian" today.

Be Christian. Not having everything you want, but wanting everything you have. Our natural inclination is to dispense with God's rules and do life our way. We make our fences to protect the commandments and we make our fences to avoid doing what is commanded. Servants obey. When we meet those who “…walk not with us…” love them anyway. Christians have the power to suffer wrongfully, to forgive and to live humbly. Our goal is regeneration.***Chapter 39: Jesus Defends His Disciples for Eating with Unwashed Hands Matthew 15:1-20; Mark 7:1-23Certain Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus, finding fault that his disciples ate bread with unwashed hands. For, according to tradition long handed down, the Pharisees and Jews could not eat without first washing their hands. There were many other old laws concerning the washing of cups, pots, brass vessels, and tables. The Pharisees and scribes asked Jesus: “Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? They wash not their hands when they eat bread.” Jesus replied: “Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, “This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.' For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups; and many other such like things ye do. Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, ‘Honor thy father and thy mother,' and ‘Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death.' But ye say, ‘If a man shall say to his father or mother, “It is Corban,” that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.' And ye suffer him no more to do aught for his father or mother; making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered; and many such like things do ye.” Then Jesus called all the people to him and said: “Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand. There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him. But the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.” When Jesus retired from the people into the house, his disciples came to him and said: “Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?” Jesus replied: “Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. Let them alone. They be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” Then Peter, the disciple, said: “Declare unto us this parable.” Jesus answered: “Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into man, it cannot defile him; because it...

Please, extend the right to vote to ALL citizens of our country -- felons and prisoners included. Tax-paying immigrants included. People serving long sentences for crimes; even those who made a violent choice 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago -- those who are still in prison, still denied a Voice to say "enough is enough! let's create a just society" -- who are legally allowed to be Used as slaves (do your research! it's true! a slave culture of voiceless prisoners and more and more laws "to lock them up"--) -- We need to push to change in this society. Police and Law Enforcement need to be held accountable -- directly to the people -- that means to me, to you, to our neighbors. And that means the whole institution of policing. Please vote, please know that WE ALL WANT JUSTICE -- FOR ALL! and I mean treating every human being with respect -- and also understanding the anger of people who have been pushed aside and silenced and used and mistreated for SO LONG -- and that includes some of *all* of our People, European, African, Native, everyone else -- over many many generations. We (Europeans) left Europe's oppression and hierarchy -- and need to get rid of that here. WE ALL WANT THE SAME THING AT CORE: Freedom, life, family, opportunity -- and fairness. Sure "Life isn't fair" -- but that's a lazy person's excuse, too. That doesn't let us off the hook -- "Life's not fair" so "now we can be assholes!" No. No. No. Be Christian, if that's your creed. Follow the teachings of your Religion. Be Loving. Be Awake. Be Compassionate. Be Human and we must rise up to create together the best world we can! -- and if that means some Courage then By God let's have some courage. Courage to care -- courage to listen to your neighbors -- Courage to believe their stories. Courage to make this world a better one and not just for you but for everybody. "The richest country in the world" don't need more oppression -- we need liberation, and love, and courage. Please, let's stand together today. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/micasun/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/micasun/support

He describes his discovery of Carlin as his first steps toward being an atheist, but seems confused about gods and related topics.Alex in Colombia thinks that a rational person can use faith, and that faith can be part of a rational worldview. Jenna and Don explain that rational people can use non-rational tools, and get a little into epistemology with Alex.We get a rare sort of call with Mark in Montenegro, who wants to defend the Koran/Quran is more accurate than the Bible because we’re closer to it in time, know that it hasn’t been changed as much, and is written in a living language rather than a dead language. Don & Jenna explain some of their issues with the book, and the caller continues attempting a defense of the book.Dalton in New Jersey is an interesting case. He started years ago as a Christian, is currently a Hindu, but is doubting his beliefs. He seems to be headed down a road of skepticism, and Jenna gets to throw him Street Epistemology as a recommendation for his topic.Joshua in New Jersey is a deconvert of only 4-5 years ago, and calls to ask the question so many of us have dealt with in the past: how do I come out to my family as an atheist? Specifically, Joshua is concerned about coming off as an “angry atheist” and “without being flashy.” We get to go over that with him, and also get a little into death and grieving as an atheist.Joseph in New York explains to us that zodiac signs and astrology are actually reliable, but people mis-apply them by using the sun sign...which is correct in its own way? Uh, vaguery is fun, I guess.Shattered in Portland, OR is a pantheist. He doesn’t offer up a defense or justification for his belief, but instead tells us that personal experience is reliable for personal beliefs, but can’t be used to convince people. The question is, why is such reasoning reliable for oneself but not for others?Samuel in Germany thinks that Star Wars has a cult-like following and fascination because people dress up and get upset when movies “violate canon” and similar issues. Does this guy know about the actual Jedi religion? Someone should tell him.Mark in Florida tells us that all the atheists he’s encountered are aggressive anti-theists to point out that we’re more than “just” agnostic atheists...people telling us what we believe is always the best. Here comes a Pordan B. Jeterson fan to ask if “atheists are willing to abandon a Christian morality.” Apparently we’re actually Christians. This show originates on WBCQ Show(Show 208) BOOK DESCRIPTION - PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK This book gives Christians the tools they need to defend their faith when it comes to the issue of homosexuality and takes the position that a Christian's non-endorsement of the LGBTQ lifestyle is a question of faith and religion, not a question of homophobia and bigotry. The book is not intended to castigate gays or to inflame emotions but rather to present a convincing argument as to why many Christians believe they cannot approve of, support, or participate in the affirmation of homosexuality and why they should not be coerced into doing so. Tolerance is one thing, but support is another. THE BOOK'S UNIQUENESS While the main focus of most books on either side of this issue is whether or not homosexuality is right or wrong from a biblical standpoint, this book focuses primarily on the injustice of persecuting Christians who believe that the Bible says homosexuality is wrong and therefore do not support the gay lifestyle. The book presents arguments that support the position that says it is reasonable, when taking into account the Scriptures that address homosexuality, for Christians to believe homosexuality is immoral and it is therefore a violation of their constitutional rights of freedom of religion and freedom of speech if forced to go against this belief or if persecuted for upholding it. I'm sorry I missed you all last week! Time kind of got away from me, and I didn't have time to record this on Friday night. As a result, I have a combination of articles of things I read last week as I was preparing for that podcast as well as things I read this week. I didn't want to throw out the great stuff I found last week, so we are back and better than ever! 1. A Tragic Abandonment of Identity: The Secularization of America's Religious Colleges and Universities by Arthur Goldberg from Public Discourse 3. The Triumph of Emotion Over Reason by Zachary Yost from The American Conservative 4. The Media’s Double Standard on Privacy and Cambridge Analytica by Patrick Ruffini from Medium 5. RePlacing Church: Local Spirituality, Innovative Community & Social Change with Ben Katt

Brian McLaren is a well-known author, speaker, activist and public theologian who has been advocating for “a new kind of Christianity” that is just and generous for over twenty years since he wrote The Church On the Other Side while serving as pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church. Since then, he has written numerous books including A New Kind of Christian, A Generous Orthodoxy and Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road?. His most recent work, The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World’s Largest Religion Is Seeking a Better Way to Be Christian explores the spiritual, theological and missional conversions that the church needs to undergo in order to be true to the way of Jesus and make a generative impact on the world. Brian is an Auburn Senior Fellow and a leader in the Convergence Network, and collaborates with the Center for Progressive Renewal, the Wild Goose Festival and the Fair Food Program’s Faith Working Group. In this episode of RePlacing Church, he joins me to discuss: What he saw twenty years ago that launched him into writing to the church How a mafia metaphor can help white people engage their whiteness How to pray for your enemies The important idea that Protestants missed in Luther’s 95 theses Why the church should be a “school of love” One key aspect of the next Reformation *Check out the Prayer for Enemies that Brian mentions here.
