In this HRchat episode, we take a look at ways to better communicate benefits to employees so they are engaged and more likely to stick around. Our guest today is Ben Hale, CEO and Co-founder at Brite, a benefit decision software that helps employees pick the right employer benefits for them and their dependents. The decision tool is integrated with what the Brite team calls their “digital benefit guides” so users have an all-encompassing experience to learn about, and get a recommendation about their employer benefits.Questions for Ben include: Brite claims to help educate and communicate employee benefits in an engaging and more effective way; making it easier for employees to choose the right benefits and paving the way for higher employee understanding and satisfaction. How does the Brite platform drive employee benefits engagement with sharable, easy-to-create digital benefit guides, packed with decision support tools? Sending ongoing benefits communications year-round can be beneficial to both employees and employers. Tell us about what to send and the tools one can use to make the process easier for both teams and employees. What's a good cadence for communications with employees? Developing a compelling employee benefits strategy is a key aspect of an HR team's role as it significantly influences workplace dynamics and satisfaction. Offering employees comprehensive benefits is a good place to start, but if you don't have a plan for launching, educating, and communicating these benefits, employees are less likely to engage with them. Can you share some tips for developing a compelling employee benefits strategy to help ensure employees understand and appreciate the value of a company's offerings? We do our best to ensure editorial objectivity. If Jazz is America's first great cultural export to the world, hip-hop is its second, and perhaps most important. From its earliest days, emerging from DJ and MC battles in the south-south Bronx, the rise and growth of hip hop music and culture has been exponential, and today there is no corner of the globe where hip hop has not taken root, often in surprising ways. Originally born from the grinding experience of 1970s urban American life, today's hip hop is a true creolization of cultures, mutating and transforming itself as it is constantly reinvented by its new fans and practitioners. There are few who are as important in the history of hip-hop as is Robert Diggs, known to the world as RZA from Wu-Tang Clan. The main producer for most of the Wu-Tang's albums, RZA is also an MC, a student of world religions and meditation, a practitioner of the martial arts, and a chess player. Chess has long been intertwined with hip-hop culture and the Black American experience, from the barbershop like the one run by my friend Jerome Helm here in Omaha – check him out in the January issue of Chess Life Faces column – to the halls of academia, as shown by my old colleague Dr. Tommy J. Curry in his 2008 article “Hip Hop Tactics.” That's in the Philosophy Looks at Chess volume edited by Ben Hale, where my “Garry Kasparov is a Cyborg” article can also be found. What becomes apparent, when reading RZA's books like the Tao of Wu and when reading this month's Chess Life cover story, written by our guest Adisa Banjoko, is that chess and hip-hop are tied together, and that chess can be much more than the staid enterprise we sometimes limit ourselves to in our imagination. We saw part of that in The Queen's Gambit, a topic that Adisa talked about at length in a recent podcast episode (#141 of The Bishop's Chronicles). We see a lot more of it in the interview, which ties chess to spirituality, the martial arts, and diet – veganism and tea. It's a very different vision of our game than the hegemonic image would indicate, and I think a vision that we would all do well to consider these days. Adisa “The Bishop” Banjoko is an author, an educator, and the founder of the Hip Hop Chess Federation. You can find him on Twitter and Instagram.

As promised, I'm trying to flood you with positivity through this show to help you adjust to your new normal. Today I have invited Ben Hale back to the show to talk about cultivating our Chi through our spring gardens. What I think is really great about this time is it's awakening us to the importance of nature. We have been forced to slow down so we are recognizing the beauty and benefits to what nature provides - and y’all know my love affair with nature and her spirits! So what better way to get connected to her in a very intimate way than through a garden. And listen if you're not a green thumb, don't get intimidated. Nature is very forgiving and miraculous. I still don't know what the heck I'm doing, but I've learned to have a conversation with her and work closely with her, and hope for the best. And the good news is, you can too! We talk about how sad our gardens have become and how we do everything we can to fluff and love on them to make them appear fresh and vibrant like they did back in spring. But the reality is, we need to honor natures natural rhythms and learn to bring everything to a close, and see the beauty in all of it! Our show today is all about the love and adoration we give to our outdoor spaces, all year round. If you’ve listened to the show you’ve heard me go on and on about cultivating Chi. I always want you to start with your own chi but our outdoor spaces are key in fluffing our chi in a positive way.  Ben and I discuss what your winter garden means in the land of energy, why you don’t want to judge your garden and how to overcome the outdoor garden blues in the dead of winter!

Joe Kutner, an engineer at Heroku, leads the discussion on Cloud Native Buildpacks with Stephen Levine (engineer at Pivotal), Emily Casey (engineer at Pivotal), Ben Hale (steward of the Java Buildpack), and Terence Lee (engineer at Heroku). All of them are involved in overseeing the CNB project, and have used the technology in production at their companies. At its core, CNBs are an OCI-compliant alternative to Dockerfiles, except the container is built without very much developer interaction. By analyzing source code, CNB is able to determine the base image to start from, as well as which steps to undertake in order to ensure that an application runs correctly. It's a similar logical process to the way in which Heroku's regular buildpacks operate: one Git push command is all that Heroku needs to generate a slug of your application, including fetching any dependencies or managing assets. A Buildpack provides you with consistency by keeping your dependencies and base image up-to-date to the latest standards. It also doesn't require the average application developer to also be an expert on everything. Rather than needing to understand all of the Unix-y commands necessary to compose an application, or knowing when a particular component has a CVE, a developer's chief concern concern is to continue building their app as usual, and CNB will handle all of the other components necessary to make a deployable container. The aim for CNBs was to make development easier for individual developers, as well as those at large enterprises. Terrance and Ben in particular know that the value of the buildpacks come from five years of production experience. Regular applications have benefitted from buildpacks, and the ecosystem around those had grown to the point where they could take what they'd learned and apply them to container images as well. The episode concludes with a look towards the future of CNBs. As all of the APIs and tooling are open source, groups can also design CNBs for any language and framework they wish to containerize. The project recently entered beta, and, despite the positive reaction, there are still some changes that need to be made with regards to how changes to buildpacks are applied. There are processes for community members to be involved, and multiple forums for communicating with the CNB leadership team. Today I have on landscape designer Ben Hale from Easy Living Yards. I wanted to have Ben on the show for two reasons: 1) We have lost our connection to the natural world and our gardens are one of the easiest ways to rekindle that love affair and 2) Ben has approached it in a way that makes it easier to fit into our lives while still enjoying it immensely.  Today Ben and I are going to discuss gardens, gratitude how we connect to the natural world with open hearts without it feeling like a chore!

Episode 43. JCP: Hold my (white) Wine. The JCP welcomes the competition of Eclipse Foundation on spec creation + A recap on Reactive. Ah, DevNexus 2019! One of the better conferences to attend in the U.S. We ended up running our yearly offheap show in there with special guests Heather VanCura, and Ben Hale! We went through the deep questions on the role of JCP (now that Eclipse Foundation Spec Process is in town), and Heather replied that the JCP is agile, knows what they've been doing for a while, and that is still THE Source for Java Spec creation! Indeed, these are intertesting times! We also dove deeply on the current state of Reactive (and what Pivotal is doing to make it easier for everyone to embrace it). We got to hear about R2DBC, when to go Reactive, and what is a good criteria for adoption (hint: Don't go and rewrite your large app in reactive just because). To top it off, we ended up with a "Who wants to be a millionaire quiz" where we pitted our guests against our (somewhat tricky) quiz questions. All for the privilege of winning an OffHeap Mug!. In all, a great episode, with tons of information and interesting guests! "We've been talking about video for a while now, but we struggle with equipment and other issues like fear of the camera, etc.  We finally invested in some better equipment and made a video of one of the recipes in our newest cookbook. After overcoming some tech issues, we dove in and made a great video.  I quickly picked up editing skills, and cut it mostly together the same day. We still have a couple of things to add. We're really happy with what we did. The best part though was involving our 16-year-old in the process.  I named him assistant director, and really took some time to explain the equipment and our process.  I put together a quick shot list, was turned out to be super helpful, and our son was able to help us move from one thing to the next.   Overall, it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, and we conquered some of our fears in the process.  We loved how our son took to it, and feel we gained miles of progress with just this one video. We can now see how this will work in our business and we're supercharged to make 100 more."
