Steve met Matthew Huff three years ago on social media. The hunters shared a love for tree dogs that brought them to a personal meeting at the 2022 Grand American Coon Hunt in South Carolina. Huff's story is unique. It begins in California and moves eastward to Georgia. The catalyst for his mostly urban coon hunting activities came in the form of a mixed breed, mostly hound, with perhaps a shot of Treeing Walker dog named Sargeant. As his travels took him across the nation Huff continued to hunt the orphaned Sarge mostly by himself on public grounds and parks until a purebred Bluetick entered the picture. That's were we find Huff today, treeing coons with regularity and assuming the more common role of hound and hunter with a traditional coonhound breed. Mentioning Huff as an urban coon hunter, he now lives in metro Atlanta. Activities inspired by the Orthodox Christian Church with whom he affiliates, have taken him to the mountains of West Virginia and to the Carolinas helping those in need, something that comes naturally to the humanitarian. This is an interesting episode that proves that hounds can lead us in many directions, some of which we may never had expected. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. The podcast moves this week down Texas way, to the northeast Ark-La-Tex region for a visit with longtime coon hunter and Bluetick enthusiast Dexters Whatley. Dex has been on the podcast a couple of times in our on-the-spot interviews at major coonhound events the likes of Autumn Oaks and the UKC Winter Classic. Co-host Corey Gruver and Steve have been addressing various aspects of treeing in reference to coonhounds in previous episodes. In this podcast, Whatley joins in a discussion based on exploring the many aspects of trail or track dogs in our sport. Whatley, in his competition days was well-known for following some mighty-good Bluetick hounds and Steve is not hesitant to explore with the man that fed them, the attributes of those dogs in regard to whether or not they could be identified as good track dogs. All the aspects of what it means to be recognized as a “track dog” are explored in this episode. Dex is very knowledgeable, can be extremely humorous and speaks with an accent and with the demeanor of one that is definitely Lone Star to the bone. Enjoy.

Blueticks are slow. Blueticks have bad feet. Bluetick breeders are kennel blind. Blueticks have never won the UKC WORLD HUNT. The list could go on and on. In spite of it all, Bluetick folks are dedicated. Brian cut his teeth coonhunting with some of the greats. Indiana is home to more UKC World Championship trophies than any other state, by a wide margin. So, Brian could have gone any direction with any of the hound breeds but he found his groove with a line of blueticks commonly referred to as the Rambo Line. Lonnie Smiley and Kevin Leach took Brian in and raised him up in blue tick tradition. Brian is now sharing this inheritance with his son Conor. Chris, Brian and Conor spend a morning talking about hunting and hounds with a deep dive into this sliver of Bluetick History. They look at how the Utchmans, Peryymans and Smileys all came together to produce this dominant line of Bluetick Coonhounds. ►Get Your Houndsman XP Info, Gear & More Here!www.HoundsmanXP.com►Become a Patron of Houndsman XP! Bryan Montalvo of Keanison Knives joins Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco on Episode 405 of The Knife Junkie Podcast (https://theknifejunkie.com/405). Each and every knife that leaves the Keanison shop, is labored over both in the combination of materials as well as build. Each Keanison knife is composed like a piece of fashion and each one is taken apart and reassembled an average of 300 times in order to get the perfect fit and function. In a rare turn, Bryan began his knife making career creating custom frame lock folders, some of the most difficult to perfect knives there are, especially for a newbie. But his background in product design and an open-armed knife community (with plenty of advice to offer) gave him the confidence needed to take the plunge directly into folders. Bryan's stringent attention to detail, aesthetics and build paid off at the 2023 Texas Blade show where the latest Keanison model, the "Bluetick," earned best M.A.C.K. (Machine Assisted Custom Knife). The demand is high for his custom knives with everyone from CEOs of major companies to kids in dorm rooms champing [not chomping] at the bit to pay premium prices for his one-of-a-kind creations. In the case of Keanison, demand far outpaces what he can supply, so he has turned to top manufacturer Reate to produce the company's first production flipper, the Fido, bringing his aesthetic within reach to the average knife collector.Find Keanison Knives online at https://www.keanisonknives.com and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/keanisonknives.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a Patron -- including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. Zie: https://www.bluetick.nl/over-ons. One on One with Stormin' NormanThe Gone To The Dogs Podcast this week features one of the most controversial figures in the sport of raccoon hunting, Norman Starling. From the State of Ohio, Starling is known throughout social media for his videos involving the 1 on 1 Coon League, essentially a challenge hunt with Starling calling out the owners of advertised coonhounds to go mano y mano against his flavor-of-the-day Bluetick in a three-hour competition where, in his words, the viewers are the jury as to who is packing the better hound. Starling's outspoken demeanor, unorthodox views and flamboyant antics have divided his viewing audience into two distinct groups, those that disparage his flamboyance and in-your-face attitude and those that consider him one of the sport's greatest influences. In this interview, Steve is determined to peel back the layers in an attempt to reveal the real Norm Starling and finds, to his surprise, that things are not always as they may seem. This will be one of the most-listened-to podcasts in the genre of coon hunting podcasts to date. To miss it is an admission that as a listener you really aren't on the cutting edge of coonhound pop culture today. It may also mean you are a purist with no interest in the way that cookie crumbles.Either way, you owe it to yourself to see what Stormin' Norman has to say when the record button turns red and Steve and Norm go 1 on 1.
In this episode Steve visits with Deep East Texas coon hunters Ed Zorn and Kenneth Tulles.Kenneth, a former rodeo cowboy and Army veteran, attributes his love for coon hunting, and a world of experience he's gained, to his association with octogenarian Ed Zorn. At age 88 years, Ed was born in the small town of Cloverleaf, about twenty miles from Houston. He still actively feeds, in Kenneth's words, his blue dog addiction by coon hunting. Both Zorn and Tulles hunt Blueticks. It is veteran hunters like Ed Zorn whom Steve tries to seek out as potential guests, believing they hold a wealth of knowledge and information that will benefit anyone within the sport that cares to listen to their experiences. Our guest this week fits the mold perfectly. Listen as Ed tells how his coon hunting habit broke him of chasing girls, ruined his love life and launched him into a lifetime of enjoying hounds. Particularly enjoyable are his and Kenneth's stories of hunts with Stagger Lee, a Bluetick of questionable parentage, suspect registration and devastating physical disadvantage that Zorn describes as being bad to the bone. This is a look back over time as Steve examines the life of a man that has enjoyed coon hunting for more years than many coon hunters of today can claim or imagine. You will like this one.
Just days before this podcast was recorded, Jordan lost a hound and had one badly torn up by wolves, not 20 feet in front of him. Jordan tells us about Ann, his lost hound, and describes the toll that overpopulation and poor management of wolves has taken on, not just his pack, but the packs of many other hound hunters (not to mention the deer and small game populations.). Join us as we explore a complicated problem, and honor the memory of a fine young hound.

We are all aware that the structure of the oilfield is changing. The lines between Upstream and Midstream in the Oil and Gas Industry are beginning to blur. However, it seems that each time the Oilfield experiences an Industry Downturn, we are asked to do the same… go leaner… and produce MORE. However, 2020 is the Age of Consolidation and the old pivots just aren't going to cut it anymore. So, this leaves all of oilfield workers to ask… What is the New Lean? This week THE CRUDE AUDACITY PODCAST is joined by Mr. STEPHEN RICHARDSON as he discusses how his team is navigating the new demand for LEAN. The age of the “Specialized” Employee is evolving. In fact, if you have a strength in multi-tasking, getting in the mix, and confident enough to ask what you don't know… then you are the desired Team. Being forced to continue to do more with less is resulting in teams with more strengths, more agility, and more common sense. Stephen Richardson offers up his thoughts on successful oilfield communications, leadership, engagement, and the new team structure. How is your team Defining the New Lean??
