Join Mike Taber, David McNally, Anne McShane, & Tom Alter for a discussion about the Second International's strengths, weaknesses, & legacy. This event took place on October 26, 2023. At its height, the Second (Socialist) International (1889-1914) represented the majority of organized workers in the world, with the stated revolutionary aim of overthrowing capitalism. Several of Its major campaigns and initiatives—such as the eight-hour day, May Day, and International Women's Day—remain today as testaments to its lasting influence. To mark the release of Reform, Revolution, and Opportunism—a collection of debates at congresses of the Second International—join editor Mike Taber, along with David McNally, Anne McShane, and Tom Alter, for a discussion about the Second International's strengths, weaknesses, contradictions, and legacy. The speakers will draw out the relevance of socialist debates from more than a century ago on topics that remain deeply contested: militarism and war, immigration, colonialism and imperialism, women's rights, and socialist participation in government. ———————————— Get a copy of Reform, Revolution, Opportunism: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/... ———————————— Speakers: Mike Taber has edited and prepared a number of books related to the history of revolutionary and working-class movements—from collections of documents of the Communist International under Lenin to works by James P. Cannon, Leon Trotsky, Malcolm X, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Maurice Bishop, and Nelson Mandela. David McNally is the Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston and director of the Center for the Study of Capitalism. McNally is the author of seven books and has won a number of awards, including the Paul Sweezy Award from the American Sociological Associaton for his book Global Slump and the Deutscher Memorial Award for Monsters of the Market. Anne McShane is a Marxist, a historian of the early Soviet women's movement and a human rights lawyer, specialising in representing asylum seekers. She has a long history of involvement in both the British and the Irish working class and leftwing movements. She contributes regular articles to the Weekly Worker, the journal of the British based CPGB and occasional pieces for Jacobin. She writes on Irish politics and the historical struggle to connect women's liberation with the socialist project. She is currently writing on the work of the Women's Department of the CPSU (Zhenotdel) in Soviet Central Asia, having completed a PhD on this subject in 2019 at Glasgow University. She is based in Cork, Ireland. Tom Alter is an assistant professor of history at Texas State University, where he specializes in labor and working-class history. He is the author of Toward a Cooperative Commonwealth: The Transplanted Roots of Farmer-Labor Radicalism in Texas and has been involved in labor and social justice movement activism for nearly 30 years. Join Mike Taber, Eric Blanc, Lars Lih, and Anne McShane for a book launch celebrating the release of Under the Socialist Banner: Resolutions of the Second International, 1889–1912, edited by Taber. Recent years have seen a massive growth of interest in socialism, particularly among young people. But few are fully aware of socialism's revolutionary history. For this reason, an appreciation of the Second International—often called the “Socialist International”—during its Marxist years is particularly relevant. What is the record of the Second International in its Marxist years? What is its legacy, and what lessons does it offer for today? These and other questions will be discussed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Order a Copy of Under the Socialist Banner: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1649-under-the-socialist-banner --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric Blanc is the author of Red State Revolt: The Teachers' Strike Wave and Working-Class Politics and Revolutionary Social Democracy: Working-Class Politics Across the Russian Empire, 1882-1917. Lars T. Lih is an independent scholar who lives in Montreal. He is the author of Bread and Authority in Russia, 1914-1921, co-author of Stalin's Letters to Molotov , author of Lenin Rediscovered: What Is to Be Done? In Context , and co-editor, with Ben Lewis, of Zinoviev and Martov: Head to Head in Halle . He has also authored a short biography entitled Lenin . At present, he is working on a study of the 1917 revolution that brings out the overlooked role of consensus and continuity in the Bolshevik outlook. Geordie Wardman of 1Stop.io talks to Jeremy Weiss about the leading SaaS conferences in Europe. Learn why every development entrepreneur should attend at least one. Apart from 1Stop.io, Geordie Wardman has founded five companies and sold three. He is a software expert who has been in the industry for two decades now. He talks to Jeremy Weiss about top SaaS conferences in Europe.  What You’ll Learn Some of the leading SaaS conferences Why you should consider attending conferences Why does Geordie like small conferences? In this Episode Conferences are crucial for both established and novice entrepreneurs in the SaaS industry. Apart from meeting people from different parts of the world, entrepreneurs get an opportunity to network and share new ideas. Many entrepreneurs even develop bonds that lead to business conferences. Geordie says as much as he adores conferences, he never gets to attend enough of them. However, he plans to start attending leading SaaS conferences in Europe. Top on his list is the SaaStock conference that Alex Duma runs. You will need to part with 750 Euros to participate in this conference. Geordie mentions that the price is reasonable based on the value you will get. Attending this SaaS conference allows you to meet excellent and resourceful keynote speakers.  The SaaStock conference takes place in Dublin, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. According to Geordie, some of the top software experts who speak at the conference include Aaron Krall, a conversion expert, SaaS development hacker, and email marketer. Dan Martell, the founder of clarity, a leading investor, and a SaaS business coach who coaches top-achieving SaaS founders, also speaks at the conference. Geordie reiterates that SaaStocks is one of the top conferences you should not miss.  Geordie is quick to mention that there are other key SaaS conferences you should know. He talks about SaaStr Europe. SaaStr is a unique non-vendor region where SaaS institutions converge to learn and develop their businesses through events, content, and teamwork. Jason Lemkin, who also founded SaaStr, runs the massive SaaS show in the USA. According to Geordie, SaaStr is currently giving out some special offers with tickets going for $400. He says this amount is cost-friendly for a SaaS conference. Attending SaaS conferences exposes you to the world of technology, and as Geordie says in this podcast, you could even meet your development team there. Listen to Geordie as he gives more reasons why you should attend SaaS conferences.  Growth marketing stage is another top SaaS conference that Geordie recommends, even though he is yet to attend it. It takes place in Kyiv, Ukraine. Geordie says that while it is small, he still considers it cost-effective and among the best in Europe. To attend this conference, you will need $200, which Geordie calls excellent value. Kyiv, Geordie says, is a hotspot for development. Are you looking forward to changing your development team or venturing into SaaS? The growth marketing stage should be a must-attend conference. Listen to the podcast to find out what you stand to gain from attending the SaaS conference. Some big companies attend the growth marketing stage conference, such as Adobe, Dropbox, and Nike.  SaaS monster is another top conference. It happens to be among the leading SaaS conferences worldwide, linking over 5,000 CTOs and CIOs, established companies and startups, sellers and buyers, and investors and experts. Geordie says the SaaS monster is an offshoot of Web summit, a conference that brings together companies and people changing the local technology industry. Web Summit will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, sometime this year. The SaaS part of this conference attracts numerous attendees each year. The comprehensive web summit attracts big corporate companies. Find out which companies these are from the podcast.  Geordie mentions Microconf, a leading and trusted community for non-venture SaaS founders. Rob Wallings collaborated with other co-founders to organize this conference that takes place in Croatia. He and his team put together excellent speakers like Mike Taber and a group from Hubspot. B2B Rocks, in Paris, Europe, is a top SaaS and B2B conference. Geordie says B2B Rocks charges are friendly at $500. This conference focuses on all SaaS features. Listen to the podcast to understand some of these features. Geordie mentions the Pipeline Summit, a meeting he attended in Poland. He says he met the founders of some of the biggest techno-firms. Listen to what Geordie has to say about his experience in Poland. He also mentions some of the companies he interacted with then. Geordie concludes by saying that attending conferences is critical for networking and marketing. Consider attending any of these shows, especially if you want to work with different experts from various parts of the world. Resources 1Stop.io

Motivation is a fickle thing. Some days it’s front and center, driving you to produce your best work. Others it’s no where to be found and things that used to be a priority can fall to the wayside. The rollercoaster of motivation is a central theme in our latest episode of Audience. Craig sits down with Rob Walling, found of Drip and TinySeed, who has produced over 500 podcast episodes. His show, Startups For the Rest of Us, has been on the air for 10 years. Throughout that time, the show has experimented with new formats, went from co-hosts to a one man show, and spurred a successful live conference series. Given Rob’s passion for and success with podcasting, he’s just the guy to help you maintain or re-spark your motivation. Throughout our interview, he describes his biggest podcasting regret, how to talk ad nauseam about the same topic, and why fostering a community with his listenership is his biggest legacy. Listen to the full episode to learn how a podcaster with 10 years of experience under his belt finds the motivation to keep going. How Startups For the Rest of Us Has Changed A lot has changed in the podcasting industry in 10 years. And the same thing can be said for Rob’s podcast, Startups For the Rest of Us. Starting out, Rob describes feeling nervous behind the mic. He wrote out, word-for-word, a script of exactly what he wanted to say for each episode. It took about 250 recordings to find his voice and feel more comfortable talking candidly with his co-host. And then he and his co-host hit the complacent years. Both in the midst of building their start-ups and family life, they stopped experimenting and trying new things. They still showed up each week, but had lost the motivation to innovate. It was just within the last year, at episode 448, that things started to change. His co-host, Mike Taber, decided to take back from recording every episode. And with that shift, Rob rediscovered his motivation to start innovating again. He ushered in new formats, more experiments, and pushed the show to excel beyond its original success. Now surpassing 500 episodes, Startups For the Rest of Us continues to inspire bootstrapped entrepreneurs. Talking About The Same Topic For 10 Years After settling on a podcast topic, the realization that you may be talking about same subject for years to come sets in. If you’ve taken the advice from successful podcasters, you chose a topic that you’re passionate about. But how do you find new ideas and angles about the same general topic week after week? Rob’s advises to “peel the onion”. The podcasts that make a splash bring new perspectives and voices to the table. Your focus, whether you’re on episode 10 or 100, should always be how can I add something different to the conversation? For Startups For the Rest of Us, Mike and Rob started building episodes from content they’d previously written about in books and articles. But then episode 30 hit and they ran out of things to say. That’s when they realized listeners had submitted questions via email and Twitter that they never addressed. A new episode format was born and they continued consistently publishing new material. Mike is the joint co-host with Rob Walling “Startups For The Rest Of Us” podcast and co-founder with Rob of the MicroConf which is the leading yearly conferences for individuals who are looking to start a Startup or already running a successful Startup company. Mike started his career with a brief, 3 month stint at a start up multimedia company called 2K Innovations Corporation in North Carolina in 1998. He was invited to join full time as a principal, but declined after seeing how the company was being run. Later that year, he moved to Buffalo, NY to work for a wireless ISP startup called Clearwire Technologies. He bailed a couple years before it went under and sold its name, but learned a lot about working at a small company.

For the next 4 weeks, I'll be releasing an episode on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to gear up for on April 9th. These episodes will be focused on self-funded, often solo-founders. Some are on the smaller side, while others have ARRs over 7-figures, but they all have valuable lessons to share for any founder. If you already have a team or have raised money, don't skip these weeks. To succeed as a self-funded startup, you need to be hyper focused and these guests share the tactics that have allowed them to build a business with limited resources.  And if you are just starting out, then these guests will help give you a plan of action so you can avoid some of the same mistakes they made. Regardless of where you're at with your startup, I know you'll get actionable lessons out of this series. Today, on the Early-Stage Founder Show, I'm talking with Mike Taber, co-host of MicroConf and the , founder of , and the author behind . In our chat, we talk about Mike's new startup, , and cover everything from how he validated the idea to why having a pre-existing audience isn't necessarily a big advantage, but where we really dive in is how he handles the balancing act of improving the product while also marketing it. If you struggle to know where to focus your limited efforts, then this is the episode for you.
