Join host Bob DeMarco for an inspiring conversation with Roger Pearson, the artist behind Savage Creature Defense Tools, who made a dramatic overnight transition from professional tattoo artist to full-time knife maker. After 26 years in the tattoo industry, Pearson closed his Florida shop and moved to Ohio to pursue his lifelong passion for blade crafting, creating what he calls "dangerous functional art."In this detailed interview, Pearson shares how his background in Japanese tattoo artistry directly influences his knife designs, from the intricate tsukamaki wrapping on his handles to the curved profiles of his popular Masako series. Named after Japan's first female shogun, the Masako knives feature neutral handles that work effectively in any grip orientation, reflecting Pearson's understanding of Libre knife fighting principles and practical defensive applications. The conversation covers Pearson's technical approach to knife making, including his favorite knife steel, his unique hand-wrapping techniques, and the mysterious "Stormlands" finish he's developed. Listeners will gain insights into both the artistic and practical aspects of custom knife making, from design philosophy to heat treatment challenges, all delivered with Pearson's straightforward, no-nonsense perspective.Pearson's story also highlights the supportive nature of the knife making community, where established makers help newcomers succeed through mentorship, tool sharing, and collaborative projects. His advice for aspiring knife makers emphasizes the importance of jumping in and learning through doing, rather than waiting for perfect conditions that might never come.Whether you're interested in the technical aspects of knife making, the business side of transitioning careers, or simply enjoy hearing from passionate craftspeople, this episode offers valuable insights and inspiration. Pearson's journey from tattoo shop to blade shop proves that with dedication, community support, and willingness to take risks, it's possible to successfully pursue your passions at any stage of life.Find Roger Pearson and Savage Creature Defense Tools on Instagram at www.instagram.com/savagecreaturedefensetools and on his private Facebook group.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. He also creates historically inspired knives and art pieces and improves them with modern construction methods and more logical design.Watson still fabricates, cuts, grinds, shapes, dresses and polishes knives one at a time, like he did when he made his first knife in high school.Whether working with the latest hi-tech materials or with rare, unique natural and antique components, Joe enjoys the process. His tactical and outdoor knives were made, tested and vetted for years before ever being sold and does not believe in using customers as guinea pigs.Joe joined the US Army at the peak of the War on Terror and when he could, modified knives, and made kydex holsters and sheaths. He trained remotely overseas with a member of Rhodesian SAS and learned how to do more with less in situations where knife performance was of great consequence.Upon leaving the military he would work in private sector security and trained in BJJ, boxing, Muay Thai, Filipino and Indonesian martial arts. Joe developed a sense of what features made the most effective tactical knives, guardless blades without choils and sheaths that allow a full hand grip performed the best in organic medium testing.Initially his goal was to make functional tools without a thought to fit and finish, but after learning from knife makers like Johnny Stout, John Young, Harvey Dean and John Horrigan, he was inspired to refine his work further.Find Joe Watson online at www.watson-knives.com, as well as on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/joewatsonusa and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/joewatsonusa. Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content. As a function-first kind of guy, he only buys tools that are best in their class for durability and multiple uses and his knife designs are based on the same uncompromising philosophy of use. Tim began making knives by hand, one at a time, six years ago and gradually grew his business by getting better equipment and working with other American manufacturers. He explains that it's important to keep knife manufacturing in the USA for several reasons, including:National securityCreating American jobsMaintaining high-quality standardsHaving control over the materials usedTim talks about how his company focuses on making high-quality knives rather than trying to make them as cheaply as possible. He also discusses some of the challenges of making everything in America, like finding the right materials and working with other U.S. manufacturers. He emphasizes that his company's success comes from paying attention to details, being willing to improve their designs, and working with other knife designers to create new products. Beren and SOG parted ways, and Beren set out to make his own brand so he could continue his work making innovative and solid knives. Over 15 years as a knife designer, Beren handled and admired countless designs—but too often, he found carrying them was a compromise. Inspired to make a more carryable knife, Beren took a deep dive into this problem, and his solution was a family of knives called MERINO. The Merino MM, or Micro-sized Manual, is the first knife in this family. It is optimized for ultimate carry comfort, always there but never in the way. It is large enough to be a useful blade but not so small that it is a novelty toy. It features an ambidextrous bar lock with a kick deploy, full metal liners, and a razor-sharp S35VN blade. The name Pepperwool captures two ideas that Beren strives for in his work: innovation and reliability.Find Beren McKay and Pepperwool online at www.pepperwool.com.Be sure to support The Knife Junkie and get in on the perks of being a patron, including early access to the podcast and exclusive bonus content.
