Well gang, here we are. It might not be the end of the road. It might just be a great big semicolon blocking our way for the moment. If you want to find out what happens next, and if we get past it, subscribe now. Then, when, if we do anything in the future, you'll definitely get to know. In the meantime, we had fun at Crossness. Fiona found connections and call backs in Hounslow. But mostly it's William Derham of Havering. The astronomer Vicar who borrowed a massive telescope and propped it up on his church tower to change the way we thing about the universe. Oh and calculated something that had stumped Isaac Newton no less. Getting his neighbours to fire canons left, right and centre, but never neglecting his parishioners. Joining us today is a trailblazer whose career has not only redefined British comedy but also bridged cultures and brought untold stories to the forefront of our screens. From groundbreaking sketch shows to acclaimed dramatic roles, he's carved out a legacy that spans comedy, drama, and beyond—it's the brilliant Sanjeev Bhaskar! In this episode, Sanjeev takes us through his remarkable journey, naming luck and timing—alongside plenty of hard work—among the biggest catalysts for his success. From growing up above a launderette in Hounslow as the son of Indian immigrants to becoming one of the UK's most celebrated performers, he reflects on how a flip-of-a-coin decision by BBC executives set his career in motion at a time when he felt like a failure; only to later realise he was simply a “success in waiting.”Beyond comedy, Sanjeev opens up about his transition into dramatic acting, how he landed his career-defining role in Unforgotten, and the personal philosophy that has shaped both his professional and personal life. He also speaks candidly about fatherhood, trusting the process, and why he refuses to map out his future and enjoys embracing uncertainty. The incredible crime drama Unforgotten returns with another brilliant series, starting Sunday 9th February on ITV.For all the latest news, click here to follow us on Instagram!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. NOT TO BE SNIFFED AT - our new companion Toby was onto something. The search was opening up, taking us out of Hounslow and into neighbouring Twickenham and Strawberry Hill... But in order to track down the Four we had to look elsewhere. The search site wasn't where, but when. Only in revisiting my edit did things fall into place. This episode was recorded on July 10th, 2024. Born in Hounslow, southwest London, my podcast guest found early passion in music, writing the first song at the age of 9. Regular collaborations with Queen's Sir Brian May and songwriting for various artists and films have kept the music career vibrant and active. A spiritual awakening on New Years Eve 2023 led to a return to the Catholic faith and a dedication to spreading Christian values through music. Currently working on a Christian album and leading worship, the journey has been filled with challenges and redemption, all leading to a new music single with Sir Brian May on the horizon for July. We are joined in the taxi by Clarissa (Alessandra Steri) and her ex-husband Robin (Dave Heron).
Eve Stratford seemed to have it all - a promising modelling career, a rock star boyfriend, and a future full of possibilities. But on a cold March day in 1975, her life was brutally cut short when an unknown attacker took everything from her in her own home. Just six months later, 16-year-old Lynne Weedon, rushing to beat curfew after a night with friends, took a fateful shortcut through a dark alley. She never made it home. Ambushed, assaulted, and left for dead, her case has remained unsolved for decades. For nearly 30 years, these two horrific crimes remained unconnected, until a revolutionary DNA discovery in 2004 linked their fates. Their killer is still at large, and the mystery remains, but one undeniable truth binds them together in a way neither could have imagined. Director, Actor, Writer and Comedian Asim Chaudhry joins Andi and Miquita for lunch - and it's a joyful, hilarious, sun-soaked, and perfect end to the series. Andi has concocted a slow cooked lamb belly with flageolet beans cooked in rum punch , a pickled fig and apple salad, with a butterbean and white corn puree. Miquita's drink is a sensational lager, gin, and grapefruit cocktail. Asim talks about growing up in Hounslow, his passion for life behind the camera, and making ends meet before the phenomenal success of “People Just Do Nothing”. We also learn that the inspiration for Chabuddy G was found very close to home, the importance of family, his Grandmother's special ‘Haleem' dish, his 90s hip hop influenced Celebrity Mastermind subject, and why freestyling as an MC is actually rubbish. An Offscript Production, and YaYa Production. Produced by Tayo Popoola. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

– ROGER EARL –Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime' fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively. In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n' roll history.Moving from England to the North Shore of Long Island in 1973, the band settled around the Port Jefferson area since their manager lived there. Roger loved the area and being an avid fisherman, especially enjoyed the fishing.During the 70's Foghat had a series of hit records such as “I Just Want to Make Love to You”, “Fool for the City”, “Slow Ride”, “Stone Blue”, “Drivin' Wheel”, “Third Time Lucky” and more. They were known as the hardest working band in Rock n' Roll since they toured 10 out of 12 months during this period.FOGHAT has a new album out called SONIC MOJO! https://foghat.comhttps://foghat.com/tour
In today's episode we are joined by Stuart King. Stuart founded BeeZee Bodies 17 years ago whilst working in public health. A hugely successful service it supports people all over England. At Public Health England he was senior scientist in the obesity and healthy weight team and he still works closely with Public Health producing and hosting The Real World Behavioural Science podcast with the Public Health & Behavioural Science Network. We look deeper into an ethnographic video Stuart developed on behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow. The video walks you through a day in the life of Veena a mum so you can see the influencers and patterns that are we are being exposed to every day. Shining a spotlight on the importance of the wider determinants of health. Three key aha moments On a short walk Veena was exposed to fast food advertising 27 times. This is important because when running a healthy weight messaging you need to remember what else people are seeing. Dogs motivate because they are external triggers - they will nudge you into movement. Do you know what other external triggers your audience may have that you can draw attention to? Does is the environment your audience is exposed to bombard them with negative triggers? Such as the 'food' options in local shops and are these triggers the norm? If so recognise and celebrate the resilience it takes to overcome them. My True Love For Farming by Chris Brettell Despite a poor education and not being able to spell, I have always had an interest in writing. I kept a daily diary supplied by the National Union of Railwaymen during my employment at British Rail. When I started a landscaping business in 1980, keeping a diary became even more important. In 1985 I answered an advert offering further education. My teacher like me had lived in Wraysbury and Ibsley. She encouraged me to write about my early years, family and farming. Despite my challenges, I am proud to say I wrote my story. I hope you enjoy itBorn in Hounslow, Middlesex in 1944, Christopher moved to Ibsley Drove when he was seven with ‘Mother' and his siblings. He always found leaving hard but grew to love his new home and in particular all the animals helped to rear at their small bungalow. Over the years Christopher worked as a Farm Labourer, Builder, Milkman, as a Porter and Shunter for British Rail, risking his life on and under the tracks on several occasions, and as a Landscape Gardener. It was always his dream to have a real farm of his own but life had other ideas…https://www.amazon.com/True-Love-Farming-Chris-Brettell-ebook/dp/B0CFT6PDMV/ref=sr_1_1?crid=23WSJSO0FRFH1&keywords=my+true+love+for+farming&qid=1696607805&s=books&sprefix=my+true%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C385&sr=1-1https://mytrueloveforfarmingbycbrettell.com/http://www.GothamBooksInc.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/101223goth.mp3
Host Dennis Leap finishes discussing key highlights from Chapter 7, “Hounslow.” Winston discusses the beauty of the Deepdene House and Gardens, where he mingled with the wealthy and elite members of the Army and Parliament. It was at Deepdene that he learned the importance of punctuality—after showing up late for a dinner with the Prince of Wales. In Chapter 8, Winston heads to India. As he disembarks from the ship, he falls and dislocates his shoulder—which later in life proved to be a blessing. “One must never forget,” he wrote, “when misfortunes come that it is quite possible they are saving one from something much worse; or when you make some great mistake, it may easily serve you better than the best-advised decision.”
Host Dennis Leap discusses key highlights from Chapter 7, “Hounslow,” from Winston Churchill's memoir My Early Years 1874–1904. As this chapter opens, 21-year-old Winston has completed his calvary training and has 6 months leave before moving on to India where his regiment is scheduled to remain for 12 to 14 years. Churchill reminisces about this time period in Hounslow, a choice district in London, writing, “I gave myself over to the amusements of the London season. In those days, English society still existed in its old form.” This podcast unveils the beauty and power of the early British Empire.

Summer Solstice Greetings Glocal Citizens! I'm fresh off of a couple of weeks of ramping up the summer in Europe where the sun was truly a superstar right alongside my guest for the next few episodes. James Barnor is a Ghanaian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghana) photographer who has been based in London since the 1990s. His career spans six decades, and although for much of that period his work was not widely known, it has latterly been discovered by new audiences. In his street (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_photography) and studio photography (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_photography), Barnor represents societies in transition in the 1950s and 1960s: Ghana moving toward independence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Ghana#Independent_Ghana), and London becoming a multicultural metropolis. He has said: "I was lucky to be alive when things were happening...when Ghana was going to be independent and Ghana became independent, and when I came to England the Beatles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles) were around. Things were happening in the 60s, so I call myself Lucky Jim." He was Ghana's first full-time newspaper photographer in the 1950s, and he is credited with introducing color processing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_photography) to Ghana in the 1970s. It has been said: "James Barnor is to Ghana and photojournalism what Ousmane Sembène (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ousmane_Semb%C3%A8ne) was to Senegal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senegal) and African cinema." Barnor has spoken of how his work was rediscovered in 2007 during the "Ghana at 50" jubilee season by curator Nana Oforiatta-Ayim (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nana_Oforiatta-Ayim), who organized the first exhibition of his photographs at Black Cultural Archives (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Cultural_Archives) (BCA). Appreciation of his work as a studio portraitist, photojournalist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photojournalism) and Black lifestyle photographer has been further heightened since 2010 when a major solo retrospective exhibition of his photographs, Ever Young: James Barnor, was mounted at Rivington Place (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivington_Place), London, followed by a series of exhibitions including in the United States and South Africa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa). His photographs were collated by the non-profit agency Autograph ABP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autograph_ABP) during a four-year project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_Lottery_Fund) and in 2011 became part of the new Archive and Research Centre for Culturally Diverse Photography. Barnor's photographs have also in recent years had showings in Ghana, South Africa, France - (Paris Photo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Photo) 2011, Galerie Baudoin Lebon; Galerie Clémentine de la Féronnière), The Netherlands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Netherlands), the UK and the US. The first monograph of his work, entitled James Barnor: Ever Young, was published in 2015, including an extensive conversation between Barnor and Margaret Busby (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Busby) with Francis Hodgson. I'm honored to be able to share his story--the history, the craft, the artistry and the humor of Uncle Jim. Where to find James? The business recently expanded into south London, with the launch of a delivery service based inBermondsey.A couple for eleven years, neither Resh nor Heena had experience of running a restaurant when they took the lease on the site at 117 The Vale, in Acton, London W3. Resh had been working in the banking sector for seven years, which she found unfulfilling, while Heena was enjoying a successful career as an experience designer. Planning to start a family, they also wanted to bring more balance to their working lives. Both women shared a lifelong passion for food, instilled in them from childhood by their large families, and having grown up in nearby Hounslow, Heena was a fan of the diverse, creative Acton area. The embryonic idea of opening a “non-traditional” restaurant serving “the food we grew up on” quickly became a reality when an ideal site became available; they put an offer in, which was accepted, and opened chapati club on 7th April 2017.For the menu, Resh and Heena looked to favourite recipes from their shared Indian-Kenyan heritage, including many handed down by their families. ‘Chicken G Dad's Way', for example, is Heena's dad's recipe, a dish so popular within her family that any time it's made it leads to a large impromptu gathering. The ‘61' in ‘Chicken 61' meanwhile refers to Resh's aunt's house number, where she would go if she wanted to eat chicken, which her vegetarian mother wouldn't cook.Heena created chapati club's modern, pared-back branding and visual identity, and oversees the creative side of the business, while Resh is responsible for the day-to-day running of the restaurant and is a familiar presence at almost every service. Both of their personalities are present in the music, another shared passion, putting together their own playlists which contribute to the restaurant's lively, celebratory atmosphere. As gay women of colour, Resh and Heena were initially wary of being an ‘out and proud' LGBTQ+ business, but quickly found that this was a strength, with peers, suppliers and most importantly, customers, all embracing them. In its four years in business, chapati club has attracted a loyal, diverse clientele of regular ‘clubbers' who value the inclusivity of the restaurant, whether they are dining with family, friends or indeed alone.Resh and Heena strive to repay their community's support by giving back to it where they can. Throughout lockdown, chapati club provided free meals for NHS frontline staff, and they have hosted fundraising and community events, including music and comedy nights, at the restaurant. They champion other local businesses, serving wines chosen for the restaurant by Vindinista, Acton's boutique wine shop, and gelato from Duci in Chiswick. While the business has grown with the expansion into south London, chapati club remains a very personal project for Resh and Heena. They are committed to offering an honest, consistent experience to all their customers, whether they are eating in the restaurant or at home. “Somehow,” they say, “we have attracted the most wonderful humans in west London, and we feel very lucky for that.”Resh and Heena live in Windsor with their two children, a girl and a boy. In the 1980s, London was rocked by a wave of violent armed robberies. One of the most daring was the raid on the Brink's Mat security warehouse in Hounslow. It was also the most lucrative by far, netting the thieves a cool £26 million in gold bullion, and leaving in its trail a wake of violence and death. An elite unit was tasked with bringing the gang to justice, Scotland Yard's Flying Squad. From the outset, Flying Squad officers suspected the robbers had inside help. But which of the guards was responsible, and how to prove it? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
