On this edition we take a look at African-American professional boxer Jersey Joe Walcott, who is regarded among the best heavyweights in the world during the 1940s and 1950s, winning the title at the age of 37. Walcott was born in 1914, and was only 15 years old when his father died. He quit school and worked in a soup factory to support his mother and 11 younger brothers and sisters, and then began training as a boxer. His first bout was in 1930. His last fight was in 1953, when he was knocked out by Rocky Marciano in the first round. After retiring from boxing, Walcott did some acting, playing small parts in a few movies and television shows. In 1956, Walcott performed the role of George the Trainer, in the Humphrey Bogart boxing drama The Harder They Fall. Walcott also refereed several boxing matches, including the second fight between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston. From 1971 to 1974, Walcott was the elected Sheriff of Camden County, New Jersey, the first African-American to hold the position. From 1975 to 1984, Walcott was the chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. You're going to hear Jersey Joe Walcott take on boxing legend Joe Louis in a 1948 rematch on ABC radio. It's one of the earliest bouts broadcast on closed circuit television. More at KRobCollection.com

Alan Weiss' The Uncomfortable Truth

If you win a race by .001 seconds, have you really “won.”? And certainly, you're not the “best in the world.” On that day, in that place, at that time, you finished barely ahead of the next person. What if you did it again an hour later? Of course, if you constantly and consistently win, you might be the best in the world or the best ever: Yankees, Celtics, Tom Brady, Rocky Marciano, Serena Williams, Jack Nicklaus. In subjective judging, it's really a joke. Those that are the best also get the most benefit in the scoring. Brady threw touchdowns, or he didn't. But the ice skaters, divers, gymnasts, surfers—those with the best records get the best treatment. Then again, there's the doping and the cheating. The Chinese escaped disqualifications for doping by claiming they consumed “tainted meat.” I wonder who slipped them that? By the way, if the Olympics are about simply the fastest, strongest, etc., why keep medal counts and raise national flags to national anthems? What about the bad calls and missed calls from officials? Is break-dancing a sport? Isn't there a practical requirement historically, such as in archery, fencing, judo, or running? Even the pommel horse was used originally to teach mounting and dismounting.  If break-dancing is a sport, why isn't ballroom dancing, which has its own competitions globally and requires superb coordination, training, balance, and teamwork? I was at a Four Seasons where, early in the morning, there was a bed-making and floor-vacuuming competition. Why isn't that an Olympic event? It's a highly coordinated skill done billions of times a day worldwide? Tennis players are athletes. I don't think golfers are, nor are race car drivers. They are certainly skilled and adept, but so are woodworkers and chess players. I understand the ambiguity of X and Y chromosomes and uncertain genitalia. However, I also know that women's athletics and Title 9 were not intended for average male athletes to be stars in another venue. When you “eclipse” someone's record, does it really count if you're using vastly improved equipment, medical support, and venues? Hasn't fiberglass improved vaulting over wood and bamboo? With modern sports medicine, Sandy Koufax would have had another six unsurpassed years. Brady couldn't have played into his 40s. We're a country of 330 million people, and it seems to me that the Australians, with 30 million, eat our lunch in the pool. And they're not as insufferable as we are with the constant chants of USA, USA. (I do chant myself against the Russians and the Chinese.)  Finally, I don't know about you, but the juxtaposition of athletes not supported by anything substantial and working with little money and not the greatest support at home, and the kibillionaire professional US basketball players, marching in the same parade and winning the same medals, well, come on….

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, it's the 15th of December, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the First book of Timothy 6:12: "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." We have got to fight the good fight. We have got to put on that armour of God every single morning because we are in the fight of our lives. I can hear somebody saying, "Oh, but the battle has been fought and the victory is ours when Jesus died and rose from the dead." Quite correct, absolutely correct, but still there is a fight and the fight is within us. Remember what they say? It's not the dog in the fight that wins, but the fight in the dog. Robert Schuller said, "Tough times do not last but tough people do." Rocky Marciano was the only heavyweight boxing champion of the world to have never lost a title fight - 49 fights, 49 wins. He only stood 5 foot 10" tall and weighed about 85 kilos, but what was the secret with Rocky Marciano? The secret was - he never gave up. He could take incredible pain. He was hugely disciplined. You know, I have two little Jack Russells. They think that they are Great Danes! They don't know how to go backwards. There is only one gear they have and that is forward. You and I need to fight the good fight of faith. We need to run this race to the finish line. We need to take hold of that eternal life that we were promised and called to. We have got to flee from sin, we have to vigorously pursue this fight with virtue, strong, healthy, full of energy. Oh my dear friend, I am talking to somebody who is down and out. I am talking to somebody who is giving up the race. You have run such a great race. Why are you stopping now? Get up, dust yourself off and get back in the fight. Now, Paul spoke about a fight, it's in the Bible, folks and I don't think there was a greater fighter than the Apostle Paul, who refused to give up and gave the devil the biggest hiding that he had had for a long time since Jesus walked on this earth. Today, let us confess, "Lord, we need You. Lord, we acknowledge that you are in our corner and Lord, we know we cannot lose this fight if you are with us." He has promised us in Hebrews 13:5: "I will never leave you and I will never forsake you."Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

9-23-2023 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this show congratulating the Minnesota Twins on winning the 2023 American League Central division. He then wonders if they have a better chance of competing for the AL Pennant now that the New York Yankees are unlikely to make the postseason. John asks out loud why the Twins run and hide whenever they play the Yankees in the postseason? The fear they have for the Yankees is unbelievable. John next asks what New York Giants Head Football Coach Brian Daboll said to his team during halftime before their comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals. He then rips the San Francisco 49ers defensive players who ANONYMOUSLY criticized Giants quarterback Daniel Jones without having the balls to put their name and image with it. John then goes on a rant about how one could be a professional football and be so weak as to lack the self-confidence to put your name behind a comment like that. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about the first ever organized baseball team, Gene Tunney, Rocky Marciano, Jose Canseco, Albert Pujols, and Gale Sayers speaking about the latter in regards to his place among all time NFL running backs.

Jamie Loftus (comedian, writer) returns to the show for a monumental 250th trip around the BP solar system, and perhaps unsurprisingly, we delve into her recent past in the world of hot dogs, as she gets extremely worried she's going to get blocked by hot dog eating legend Joey Chestnut after writing about him in her great book, "Raw Dog". It's a beautiful story that she's so eager to tell, she tells it during the social media update portion of the show. But who cares! It's a great episode that John is forced to record at a "podcast bar" in Calgary as he completed his move but his house does not yet have internet. We spend an awful lot of time discussing that situation, as well as Brockton, Massachusetts' own Rocky Marciano and the 24-foot statue devoted to him in his (and Jamie's) hometown, prompting a brief guest appearance from Jamie's dad, sportswriter Mike Loftus, in the form of a note to help place his career among the boxing greats. Plus, Stefan finally gets a great promoted post and we discuss vitamin overdoses and Mario Kart. If you want to overdose on Vitamin BP (Blocked Party), you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every dang month. Coming out this week, Stefan made his triumphant return to the stand-up stage after a 13-year absence, and Dan captured the whole thing on video for your enjoyment. John's set will be on there too. Plus, Stefan Takes an L returns this month, and a donation gets you merch discounts, access to our Discord, and access to our entire back catalogue, which is over 100 episodes. Overdose indeed! I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Sunday morning, the 3rd of September, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the First Book of Timothy 6:12: "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." We have to follow through. Paul said to Timothy, "You have made a confession of your faith and now you have to complete it." There is nowhere in the Bible where it says, "Come to Jesus and all your problems will be over." I will tell you why - because it is not in the Bible. No, not at all. Paul says we have to fight the good fight. That means it is a continual ongoing battle, but when we have made that confession, the Lord Jesus Christ is in our corner! So we are going to win that fight if we keep on. We need to run this race to the end. You only get the prize at the finish line. If you don't finish the race, you don't get the prize. I know that. I ran the Comrades Marathon. I did not finish and I never got the medal. We need to finish the race that the Lord has put us in. Jesus never promised you and me a bed of roses, but He did promise us that He would never leave us or forsake us. Now remember, it is not the fighter that can deliver the punch that becomes the champion. No, it is the boxer who keeps getting up when he has been knocked down. Eventually, his opponent is totally overwhelmed by the man's determination and gives up and loses the fight. There is only one heavyweight boxing champion in the world who was totally undefeated. Rocky Marciano was a small man by today's standards. He weighed about 170lbs, he stood 5ft 9 inches tall, and he was undefeated. He was fighting men who were 6ft 3" and weighed 230 lbs. What was the secret? The secret was that this man could take pain. He just never, ever gave up and eventually he wore his opponent down. Now, you and I are in the fight of our lives. We need to stand. The Lord is in our corner, He will give us directions but we need to keep on fighting, and remember what a reward awaits you and me in Heaven. One day when we have finished our race, when we have fought our good fight, and the Lord says, "Well done, good and faithful servant, come and enter into your rest."Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

Terry O'Neill is a former Irish international boxer turned actor and comedian. During his years in the fight game, the Dubliner won national titles and represented his country across Europe, winning Four Nations gold. His current show, Rope A Dope, is an international hit, featuring twice at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It's based on his years in the sport and some of the comic elements he came across during his time in the ring. As he says, mental things have gone on over the years, so why not give them a run in the sun? It's joke heavy but it's also about the loss of a dream. Terry dreamt about becoming a professional champion like his idol, Rocky Marciano, but has new ambitions these days in showbusiness. Here, he talks about fighting on the fringes of the high performance revolution in Irish boxing and how emotions often got the better of him around his biggest fights, for better or worse. He discusses his new way of channelling that energy, through performance, the joys of being typecast as a ‘Dublin scumbag' and his ambition to follow classmate and fellow boxer Barry Keoghan all the way to Hollywood one day. It's a frank and open discussion, and Terry kills – especially when he talks about landing one of his biggest roles. He also takes the Boxing Movie Quote challenge with hilarious results. We have to face the enemy and then we will have the victory. In Ephesians 6:14, the Lord tells us to stand and not to run. Remember the battle is the Lord's. When you want to make a serious decision in your life, never make it while running away from your problem. Face the challenge and face it head on and overcome it that way. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”Revelation 12:11Then make your decision from a position of strength, peace and of a sound mind. We know that scripture so well, don't we?“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”2 Timothy 1:7Do you know that Rocky Marciano, heavyweight boxing champion of the world, was one of the smallest and the lightest heavyweight boxers? He had forty-nine title fights and defences of his crown and he never lost a fight. What was his secret? Well, he never took his eye off his opponent. He never turned his back on his opponent. He could take tremendous physical punishment but he never turned away, he always kept on coming forward. “The Lord is my helper;I will not fear. What can man do to me?”Hebrews 13:6This Sunday, face your challenges, face your troubles - Stand with the Lord and He will see you through. Have a wonderful day,God bless you and goodbye.

The land had been cultivated and lived on for millennia when geologist Ferdinand Hayden came upon the astounding Yellowstone "wilderness." It wasn't long before the federal government declared it a national park, to be preserved in perpetuity for the enjoyment of all. Ostensibly. How did Yellowstone go from being an important home, hunting ground, thoroughfare and meeting place to being a park? This episode was reported and produced by our friends at the wonderful podcast Civics 101. Featuring: Megan Kate Nelson, author of Saving Yellowstone, Mark David Spence, author of Dispossessing the Wilderness and Alexandra E. Stern, historian of Native peoples and Reconstruction are our guides to this rocky start.  LINKSFor more about the history of national parks and state-backed conservation, we've got episodes! We've also delved into the history of Yellowstone, with a focus on the original conservation strategy behind it and many other parks, a strategy pejoratively called “fortress conservation.”“Himalayan Land Grab” tells the story of what happened when park developers applied the same “fortress conservation” strategy in northern India.“Thin Green Line” is an exploration of the role of conservation law enforcement through the reality TV show North Woods Law.We've also featured “The Problem with America's National Parks,” an episode of the podcast The Experiment (no longer being produced) which asked: why not simply give the national parks back to Native Americans? CREDITSHosted by Hannah McCarthy and Nick CapodiceProduced by Hannah McCarthy with help from Nick CapodiceSenior Producer: Christina PhillipsExecutive Producer: Rebecca LavoieCivics 101 staff includes Jacqui Fulton.Outside/In team: Nate Hegyi, Taylor Quimby, Justine Paradis, Felix Poon, and Jessica Hunt.Music: Walt Adams, Silver Maple, Arthur Benson, Alexandra Woodward and Rocky Marciano.
