In the chaotic early months of his second term, Donald Trump has attacked the Canadian economy and mused about turning Canada into the “51st state.” Now, after decades of close allyship with the U.S., our relationship with America has suddenly become fraught. Which means that Canadians are now starting to ask what a more sovereign Canada might look like – a question Jim Balsillie has been thinking about for 30 years. Balsillie is the former co-CEO of Research in Motion, the company that developed the Blackberry, and is one of the most successful business people in Canada. He's also one of the patriotic, which makes his recent criticism of our country that much more meaningful. As Balsillie has pointed out, our GDP per capita is currently about 70% of what it is in the U.S., our productivity growth has been abysmal for years, and our high cost of living means that 1 in 4 Canadians are now food insecure. But, according to Balsillie, none of this can be blamed on Trump. He thinks that over the last thirty years we've clung to an outdated economic model and have allowed our politics to be captured by corporate interests. So, with less than a week to go before the federal election, I thought it was the perfect time to sit down with Jim and ask him how we might build a stronger, more sovereign Canada.Mentioned:“Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS),” The World Trade Organization“Reinforcing Canada's security and sovereignty in the Arctic,” Prime Minister of Canada“Ontario Welcomes Siemens' $150 Million Investment to Establish New Technology Centre in Oakville,” news release from the Government of OntarioFurther Reading:“We are all economic nationalists now,” by Jim Balsillie (National Post)

Blockmate Ventures CEO Justin Rosenberg joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the company's latest achievement: the closing of a $1.4 million strategic investment from a group of investors led by renowned innovation leader and visionary investor Antanas Guoga. This significant funding will help accelerate the growth and expansion of Blockmate's portfolio, positioning the company for greater success in its next phase of development. Rosenberg emphasized that Hivello Holdings Ltd, Blockmate's primary asset, has already been able to secure capital independently since December 2023, demonstrating the strong market interest in its business. However, this new infusion of capital will specifically focus on driving forward the launch and growth of Blockmate's subsequent portfolio companies, marking a pivotal moment in the company's strategic evolution. Guoga, widely recognized for his leadership in technological innovation, is the chairman and major shareholder of Sol Strategies Inc., a Canadian holding company established to invest in breakthrough technologies, including blockchain and cryptocurrencies. His deep expertise in both emerging technologies and the global investment landscape will be invaluable as Blockmate continues to build its portfolio of companies. As a former Member of the European Parliament, Guoga has been a champion for digital and technological advancement. His advocacy for blockchain applications and his extensive influence across both private and public sectors align strongly with Blockmate's mission. “Tony G's commitment to driving blockchain applications with social impact makes his investment a powerful endorsement of our vision,” Rosenberg shared with Proactive. This strategic investment further solidifies Blockmate Ventures as a key player in the growing blockchain and technology space, with a strong focus on social impact and technological innovation. With Guoga's expertise and global network backing its growth, Blockmate is poised to make significant strides in its expansion plans. #Hivello #DePIN #Blockchain #Crypto #cve #mate #PassiveIncome #Web3 #Bitcoin #ZuluPartnership #TechInnovation #ProactiveInvestors #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews #BlockchainInvestment #Crypto2025 #TonyGuoga #PassiveIncome #CryptoGrowth #Hivello #DigitalInfrastructure #BlockchainTechnology #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

"This was a a really strong convening then for employers and education to to better communicate and then plan on how to improve that connectivity between graduating students and employment."We welcome guest experts John Hambrick, Work-Based Learning Coordinator at the Educational Service Center (ESC) of Central Ohio, and Lauren Stowe Jones, Senior Director of K-12 Partnerships at Columbus State Community College.John Hambrick, who moved to Columbus in 1998, transitioned from a background in education and restaurant industry work into non-profit roles, ultimately leading him to his current position in workforce development at ESC of Central Ohio. The Educational Service Center serves 30 member school districts across eight counties, working to bridge the gap between K-12 education and industry needs.Lauren Stowe Jones started her educational journey as a 7th-grade teacher in Boston but returned to Central Ohio due to high living costs. She joined Columbus State Community College, where she worked on reforming developmental education to reduce the need for remedial courses. Presently, she oversees 10,000 high school students taking college credit courses through the College Credit Plus program. This significant initiative offers free college courses to high school students, impacting their educational pathways. Both guests emphasize preparing students for future job markets by aligning educational programs with evolving industry demands in Central Ohio. They highlight dual enrollment and teacher education programs as critical strategies. Lauren discusses how dual enrollment influences teaching demographics and necessitates changes in teacher preparation to deploy educators quickly and support their continuous development. John highlights Ohio's emphasis on expanding registered apprenticeship programs, especially to address teacher shortages, and mentions the creation of teacher academies in school districts as pre-apprenticeships.Ohio's alternative licensure models are also a focal point, creating pathways for veterans and industry professionals to enter teaching roles. John outlines significant state funding to support education, including a $100 million investment from the Ohio legislature for career technical education equipment and workforce boot camps. While the full impact of these initiatives on students remains to be seen, the guests express optimism about creating more informed and prepared students. The conversation turns to the integration of technology, particularly the role of AI, in education. AI is viewed as a complement to traditional teaching methods rather than a replacement. Teachers will need to adapt, and educational policies will have to guide the use of AI in schools. Community involvement is also essential, with partnerships between colleges, businesses, and economic development sectors shaping educational messages and providing resources.Educational innovation is discussed, including the creation of innovation labs equipped with VR, 3D printers, and augmented reality tools. These efforts aim to provide equitable access to technology for all students. Programs like the Intel project highlight economic development activities, with a need to communicate future manufacturing and economic opportunities to the community. Columbus State has introduced career educators focused on in-demand industries and developed tailored educational materials for various audiences to spread awareness about regional career opportunities.Partnerships with economic development partners are crucial to bring business insights into the educational realm, helping prepare students for new career pathways. Emerging technologies, smart mobility, and connected technology in Central Ohio are also highlighted, with resources provided by entities like the Department of Transportation and DriveOhio. Ceartas DMCA, a leading provider of AI-powered brand protection and anti-piracy services for content creators and brands, has raised $4.5 million to enhance its operations, expand its scalable SaaS solutions for enterprises, and extend its global reach. This funding round drew support from lead investor Earlybird Venture Capital, a renowned VC firm dedicated to supporting European tech pioneers; Upside VC, a new distribution-focused consumer investment firm established by The Sidemen, collectively one of the largest Youtube presences in the World, with a following exceeding 20 million; and a range of high-profile angel investors. Founded in 2021 by Dan Purcell (CEO) and Jonny Smyth (CTO), Ceartas DMCA has revolutionised brand protection with the power of AI, setting a new industry standard. Their platform adeptly de-indexes and issues legal notices for pirated content, significantly reducing that content's visibility on Google by 98% and boasts an industry-leading success rate of 99% in overall content removal from both search engines and sources. Ceartas DMCA's cutting-edge platform offers an array of services crafted to address the multifaceted challenges of copyright infringement and unauthorised content distribution, including the threat of deepfakes. Protecting the valuable assets of both individual content creators and enterprise-level entertainment brands, Ceartas is quickly becoming the go-to fullstack AI-powered copyright and piracy protection platform in a new era of infringements. Based out of Dogpatch Labs in Dublin and Berlin, and with a remote-first approach, the funding poises Ceartas for global expansion, supporting a strategic opening of a Los Angeles office. It marks a leap in the company's mission to provide unmatched brand protection services worldwide. Alongside pivotal partnerships with platforms such as OnlyFans and Fanfix, the move solidifies Ceartas's stature as a guardian of digital content and intellectual property. Dan Purcell, Co-founder and CEO at Ceartas, shared: "As we navigate an era rife with advanced piracy, copyright infringements, deepfakes, and disinformation, Ceartas leads the charge in brand protection. By harnessing AI, we develop cutting-edge solutions to these complex challenges. This funding round is a nod to past achievements and a signal of trust in our vision from incredible investors. "We're excited to bolster our support for content creators and expand our enterprise solutions to meet the needs of industry giants. Looking ahead, we're optimistic about safeguarding the digital landscape against the evolving threats of digital theft, abuse, and misuse." This latest investment also propels Ceartas to enhance its bespoke anti-piracy solutions, catering to diverse sectors and addressing the escalating sophistication of digital threats. Leveraging advanced AI, the company conducts deep scans across digital platforms to identify and eliminate unauthorised content, including deepfakes. These efforts underscore Ceartas's commitment to setting new standards in copyright protection and supporting the media and entertainment industry's fight against piracy. Andre Retterath, Partner at Earlybird Venture Capital, said: "Across media and the entertainment industry, individuals and enterprises alike are facing unprecedented piracy challenges. The nature of copyright infringement is evolving at a pace in line with the emergence of AI technologies. The threats in this new era are tangible, as seen in many recent high-profile cases. "Training modern AI large language models (LLM) also opened the floodgates for the use and dissemination of unauthorised content. Accordingly, the demand for reliable solutions is vast. As pioneers of this space, Ceartas have developed world-leading protection services which effectively safeguard brands, and we couldn't be prouder to back the expansion of their operations." Ceartas has seen explosive growth and profitability, signalling a strong market demand for it...
