Today, he also holds defense-related master's degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School, the Air Command and Staff College, and the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.William has served in nuclear-powered submarines across a variety of classes and mission profiles, including duty as the Weapons Officer of a fast-attack submarine and the Executive Officer of a Trident missile submarine. Ashore, he has served as a tactical evaluator on an inspection team responsible to assess the combat readiness of U.S. submarines, and he currently works in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD CAPE) in the Pentagon. He will return to sea duty in the summer of 2026.He has his own passion for exercise, which is not  always a clean fit with the culture of the submarine community, as you'll hear in this episode.He also writes on leadership, ethics, and military topics. The Flapper Skate is the largest species of skate in the world, clocking in at up to 2.5 metres in length. Sadly, they have been classified globally as “critically endangered”. In May, two Flapper Skates washed ashore in Co. Mayo and Louise Overy, Wildlife Biology Lecturer at Munster Technical University, was able to study it.

Boaties around the country are checking moorings following a safety warning from officials to go ashore overnight. A magnitude 8.8, which struck this morning, has prompted warnings from the National Emergency Management Agency of strong currents and unpredictable surges.

AP correspondent Karen Chammas reports that an extraordinary number of dead sea turtles have been washing up on India's shores.

The Noyo Center for Marine Science is celebrating its tenth year in operation.  A stranded blue whale back in 2009 was the impetus for creating the center.  Each year, Sarah Grimes, the Stranding Coordinator for Noyo Center presents the annual findings. She works under a permit through the California Academy of Sciences. Before the Noyo Center, animals stranded on Mendocino beaches fell to teams from Humboldt or Sonoma.Since 2014, the Noyo Center has documented the stranding of 18 whales, 8 dolphins, 6 porpoises, and hundreds of pinnipeds.  In 2024, one of the more notable strandings was a juvenile female Fin whale.  Fin whales are on the endangered species list.  The whale was first sighted on the beach between Ward Ave and Ten Mile River.  Later it washed up a second time at Ward Ave.  There was evidence to suggest the whale died from a ship strike.  A NOAA report on Fin Whale populations along the Pacific Coast estimates that between 43 and 95 fin whales die from ship strikes each year.  The estimated total population on the Pacific Coast per NOAA is approximately 11,000.There were 40 pinnipeds identified on Mendocino beaches.  The pinniped family includes California Sea Lions and various types of seals including Harbor, Elephant, and Fur Seals.   Finally, three dolphins and one porpoise washed ashore, including a Pacific White-sided Dolphin.  Each stranded animal is documented and many undergo necropsies to inform the scientific community.The live dolphin did not survive the transport to the Marine Mammal Center. Another particularly sad incident involved a California sea lion pup named Pipoca. Pipoca had been rescued earlier in the spring and rehabilitated at the Marine Mammal Center. But the Nimitz class aircraft carrier had something that's been unheard of until now, ubiquitous, high speed internet connectivity, even when it was 1000s of miles from shore. The connectivity experiment is part of a navy project called Sailor Edge Afloat and Ashore for how they tested it and the difference it made. As of now, the case is not being investigated as a homicide, according to Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin. “The remains appear to be that of an adult male,” Martin confirmed. “At this point, we're not discounting any possibility. This could be an accident or missing person, it's too early to tell the circumstances.” The discovery has left local residents and visitors on edge, with many wondering about the origin of the remains. Miguel Muelle, a Key Biscayne resident, expressed his concerns to NBC Miami, stating, “What remains to be seen is where did the head come from?” The medical examiner's office has yet to comment on the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, authorities stress that they are exploring all potential scenarios to understand how the head ended up on the shore. A grim discovery was made Tuesday morning when a human head, believed to belong to an adult male, washed ashore on Key Biscayne, a popular tourist spot in South Florida. A beach worker found the remains around 8:36 a.m. and quickly alerted the Key Biscayne Police Department. Upon arrival, officers determined that the object was indeed a human head and notified the Miami-Dade Police Department for further investigation. Authorities are now waiting for the medical examiner's office to confirm the identity of the deceased and provide more information about the cause and manner of death. As of now, the case is not being investigated as a homicide, according to Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin. “The remains appear to be that of an adult male,” Martin confirmed. “At this point, we're not discounting any possibility. This could be an accident or missing person, it's too early to tell the circumstances.” The discovery has left local residents and visitors on edge, with many wondering about the origin of the remains. Miguel Muelle, a Key Biscayne resident, expressed his concerns to NBC Miami, stating, “What remains to be seen is where did the head come from?” The medical examiner's office has yet to comment on the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, authorities stress that they are exploring all potential scenarios to understand how the head ended up on the shore. Detective Martin emphasized the early stage of the investigation, noting, “We're keeping an open mind and looking at every possibility.” Local and county law enforcement agencies continue to work together, awaiting forensic results that could offer critical clues in unraveling the mystery. Ashore, Aiken served as a manpower specialist/detailer at Navy Surface Warfare Manpower Headquarters, Navy Personnel Command; deputy executive assistant/administrative aide to the Secretary of the Navy; liaison to the U.S. Senate for the Secretary of Defense; and naval aide and executive assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Financial Management and Comptroller.
