Today on the podcast. We chat to Brad Smeele.  What an absolute weapon of a human being he is. Brad Smeele's thrill-seeking, fast-paced life as a professional wakeboarder came to an abrupt halt when an accident caused him to become a quadriplegic. Wakeboarding is like waterskiing, but on a single board with aerial tricks added in. It's a freestyle sport for super-athletic adrenalin junkies. Brad was at the peak of his career, pushing the sport to new heights and perfecting tricks that no one else could achieve. He was also a sought-after model and relished his free-wheeling lifestyle. But in July 2014, while practising his latest trick, he landed badly. Catastrophically, in fact. He landed on his neck, completely crushing his spinal cord and becoming a quadriplegic immediately. For someone whose whole life was built around his physical prowess, this was completely and utterly devastating. Brad has had to work through a great deal, from being an incredibly physical person in all senses of the word to being someone with very limited use of his body. The struggle has been monumental, but he's come to a place of acceptance. In his book he shares his epic story and the lessons he has learnt from an unexpected teacher. He now brings the same focus and determination he brought to his wakeboarding career to inspiring others 4:08 - Jetski dam story. 5:50 - Wakeboard incident & aftermath. 22:30 - Insurance. 25:10 - The Chair. 29.30 - Red Bull Wings for Life World Run. 34:43 - Spinal research + current pain/feeling. 36:50 - Writing the book. 41:30 - Dating. 43:25 - Static breath holds + diving. 49:33 - Future plans. On July 5, 2014, Brad Smeele was a 27-year-old pro athlete and part-time model, living his wakeboarding dream in Florida, America. One day later, his whole life changed. Brad attempted a “trick of the year” wakeboarding stunt where he fell 90° short of a safe landing, and instead, tumbled into a crash that left him quadriplegic. Since that day, Brad has gone on an immense journey of self-discovery, and found the positives in the incident, both for himself and for society. He is now a speaker, author, and general force for good. In this podcast, Brad unpacks his story in depth, revealing the raw physical and mental realities of his life. Physically, he opens up on the nature of his day-to-day, whether or not he can have sex, and what it feels like to be quadriplegic. Mentally, he shares hard-earned wisdom on avoiding a victim mindset, turning negatives into positives, and what it means to work on yourself. Brad's combination of humor and vulnerability make this conversation as enjoyable as it is powerful. Brad Smeele was a world champion wakeboarder at the top of his game. His life was an endless summer of travel, competing, modelling, building and meeting women when a catastrophic accident changed his life and left him a quadriplegic in 2014. Brad talks about the astonishingly raw and honest book about his journey – Owning It – The Ride That Changed My Life. The mental and physical challenges of losing mobility, the realities of life without the use of limbs, his sex-life, what it looks like now and why he included so much of it in the book, the darkest thoughts he had – and how he overcame them, and his incredible path to happiness, fulfilment and being present. And how he got there. This is a chat that really left us speechless. Brad suffered just about the worst possible thing that could happen to a young man in the prime of his life – and has found a way to turn it into a positive. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell.  Based on the life of Lucrezia de Medici who lived in Florence in the 16th Century and was the subject of the famous Robert Browning poem My Last Duchess. At the age of 15 she was married off to the Duke of Ferrara who commissioned a marriage portrait of his new wife, inviting a renowned portrait artist to take on the job. Lucrezia though felt unwelcome in her new home where it was clear that her sole responsibility was to provide a son and heir and when that didn't happen, after less than a year, became increasingly certain that the Duke had plans to kill her. Wonderful historical fiction.    Owning It by Brad Smeele. Story of a world champion wakeboarder who had a terrible accident on the water and has been quadriplegic ever since. It's a big book – nearly 500 pages – which is remarkable given that he wrote it by using a mouthstick to tap out every single letter onto a tablet. I have to say, he shares a lot – perhaps not always wisely – but I guess it highlights what he's lost. Is becoming quite the inspirational/motivational speaker.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's guest is Brad Smeele - a legendary world champion wakeboarder, and an extremely talented Kiwi who spent the better part of a decade killing it on the world stage. In 2014, Brad won a global award for “Trick of the Year” for nailing a double tantrum to blind (we will find out about what that is but know it's a big trick) - the first person in the world to do so. But, that very trick would a few weeks later change his life - Brad took a heavy crash trying to land it - and broke his neck so badly he was left quadriplegic. By his own admission, he's battled through some pretty dark times since the accident, but hearing how he has navigated through that is a remarkable story. He's currently in the middle of finishing a book, and learning how to dive - so you can only imagine how epic his outlook on life is!

Why accepting things we can't change is key to our emotional and psychological wellbeing, with quadriplegic former wakeboard champion Brad Smeele. Research shows that our willingness to accept the unchangeable is crucial, whether we’re talking about a financial crisis, a health diagnosis, the loss of an important relationship, or any other unanticipated, unpleasant event, fighting what is won’t make it not so. Instead, when we do battle with reality, we cripple our capacity to cope with the situation and manage all the emotions we experience in response to it. Brad Smeele was a world champion wakeboarder – until he broke his neck performing a trick in 2014- which left him quadriplegic. Until that point, Brad had been pretty much living the dream- chasing summers around the world and earning money on the side as a model. His identity before the accident was closely bound up with his physicality- so coming to terms with the fact that that was no longer the case was understandably a huge challenge. However – Brad has demonstrated a truly inspiring mentality toward his new life as a quadriplegic. He has set up a foundation called the movement collaborative to help fund spinal cord injury research, and is a motivational speaker sharing the lessons he has learnt along his journey. In this episode- Brad explains how he came to terms with what happened, and how he realigned his identity by looking inward. He talks about the importance of sitting with emotions- and learning from them- rather than trying to avoid them. He explains the power of being vulnerable and having genuine conversations, as well as the importance of understanding that everyone goes through difficult times, although social media can distort that.
