Mike talks to director Paul King about how he brought his vision to life with Wonka. Paul talks about why he wanted Timothée Chalamet to play Wonka, what he loved about the original that he didn't get to include in his version and how he feels about people being surprised to learn the film is a musical. Mike then talks to Calah Lane who plays Noodle in Wonka. She talks about what it was like seeing herself on the big screen for the first time, her process of learning lines and what she learned from her co-star Timothée Chalamet. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Drive-Away Dolls. He talks about Margaret Qualley's standout performance, the film's hard R-rating and what it did right and what it lacked in its 1 hour and 20 minute runtime. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Twisters, the sequel to one of his favorite movies of all-time. The question is does he hate it or love it now that the first look has arrived? Wonka is a 2023 musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby based on a story by King. It tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, a character in the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, featuring his early days as a chocolatier. The film stars Timothée Chalamet in the title role and an ensemble cast including Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant. It is the third live-action film based on Dahl's novel, following Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Development began after Warner Bros. Pictures reacquired the rights to the character in October 2016 and announced that the film would serve as an origin story. While the film tells a standalone story with no connection to prior adaptations, King developed Wonka to exist as a "companion piece" to the 1971 film by reprising some of the music, thematic elements, and visual design of the Oompa Loompas. In May 2021, Chalamet was confirmed to be portraying Wonka and the supporting cast were announced in September of that year. Filming began in the United Kingdom in September 2021, taking place in Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in Watford, as well as Oxford, Lyme Regis, Bath, St Albans and at the Rivoli Ballroom in Crofton Park, London. The original songs for the film were contributed by Neil Hannon, while its original score was provided by Joby Talbot. Wonka had its world premiere in London at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, on November 28, 2023. It was released in the United Kingdom on December 8 and in the United States on December 15 by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film has grossed $469 million worldwide and received generally positive reviews from critics. For his performance, Chalamet was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film also received two Critics' Choice Award nominations for Best Young Actor/Actress for Lane & Costume Design. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

And so we close out the year 2023 with Timothee Chalamet's Wonka. This is a new musical fantasy prequel to Roald Dahl's story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That 1964 book has been adapted twice: the classic version starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka in 1971 and the not-so-classic Tim Burton 2005 remake starring Johnny Depp as Mr. Wonka. While this new Wonka movie didn't reach the dizzying heights of Cats (2019), there was still plenty of wacky musical fun to be had. The movie is competently directed by Paul King, who is famous for Paddington and Paddington 2. Wonka co-stars Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant as Lofty the Oompa-Loompa. Join us for this special Minnesota-based Lodgecast as we inject the liquid chocolate deep into our veins! Wishing you all a wild and wonderful wishy-washy New Year!

The Wonka candy empire had to start somewhere and someone decided to make a prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to tell the origin tale. That someone is director Paul King, who also directed the Paddington movies. Timothee Chalamet, from the Dune movies, stars as the young Willy Wonka who arrives at an unnamed town to open up a chocolate shop. He soon finds out that it isn't going to be that easy thanks to the Chocolate Cartel. They don't want any competition and they spring the Chief of Police on the young, naive Wonka. Lows and highs, twists and turns proceed in this movie also starring Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, Keegan Michael-Key as the Chief of Police and Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Mrs. Scrubbit. Not sure whether this movie will be a tasty treat or a big bowl of rotten lettuce? Check out this spoiler-free review to clear up that mystery. Wonka also stars Tom Davis, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Calah Lane, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Jim Carter and Rakhee Thakrar. Hey everyone, what some are calling the cinematic family event of the holiday season - Wonka - has hit theaters. From the director of the two Paddington films comes a Willy Wonka prequel that (apparently) is meant to precede the events of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder. I was interested in this movie based on the director alone, despite being a huge fan of the Roald Dahl story when I was younger. I went in hoping for a big and light-hearted fun time. Is that what I got? Find out in this review. Wonka: Directed by: Paul King Screenplay by: Simon Barnaby & Paul King Story by: Paul King Based on characters created by: Roald Dahl Produced by: Alexandra Derbyshire, David Herman, Luke Kelly Executive Producers: Cate Adams, Rosie Alison, Michael Siegel, Tim Wellspring Music by: Joby Talbot Production Design by: Nathan Crowley Cinematography by: Chung-hoon Chung Editing by: Mark Everson Casting by: Nina Gold Costume Design by: Linda Hemming Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant, Sally Hawkins, Matt Lucas, Mathew Boynton, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Paterson Joseph Synopsis: Willy Wonka – chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time – is proof that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you're lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.

A young man named Willy Wonka enters into a small town where he wishes to open a candy shop at a district with three main competitors: Mr. Slugworth, Mr Prodnose, and Mr. Ficklegruber. They are threatened with his presence and chocolate making, so they pay the chief police officer to get rid of him. But Willy Wonka doesn't give up as he thinks of clever ways to get the people interested in his chocolate. Along his journey, he befriends an orphan girl who wishes to find her family and a group of people who are forced to work at an inn to wash clothes until they pay their debt. When the film premiered in theaters, it has received positive reviews from critics and viewers praising Timothee's portrayal as Willy Wonka, the music, the presentation, and capturing the heart of the 1971 film. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support
