Based on Mendoza's experiences during the Iraq War as a U.S. Navy SEAL, the film depicts an encounter he and his platoon experienced on November 19, 2006 in the wake of the Battle of Ramadi. To maintain historical accuracy, the film's material is exclusively taken from the testimonies of the platoon members, and is presented in real time. It stars an ensemble cast that includes D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza, alongside Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Joseph Quinn, Charles Melton, Noah Centineo, and Michael Gandolfini. We then talk about 'Paths of Glory' a 1957 American anti-war film directed by Stanley Kubrick, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson. It is adapted from the 1935 novel of the same name by Humphrey Cobb, which was in turn was based on the Souain corporals affair during World War I. The film stars Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax, the commanding officer of French soldiers who refuse to continue a suicidal attack, after which Dax defends them against charges of cowardice in a court-martial. The Amateur Directed by James Hawes – Starring Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan After losing his wife in a terrorist attack, a CIA codebreaker goes rogue. Fueled by grief and intelligence, he sets out on a globe-spanning mission of revenge when the agency fails him. Tense, intimate, and full of suspense. Sinners Directed by Ryan Coogler – Starring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo Twin brothers return home hoping for peace, only to find that evil doesn't forget. A southern Gothic drama that mixes family trauma with spiritual reckoning and small-town menace. Classic Review: Fright Night (1985) Directed by Tom Holland – Starring William Ragsdale, Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall Teenage horror nerd Charley Brewster is convinced his new neighbor is a vampire. “War is hell” is a common phrase, but as we live our peacetime lives, it can be hard to visualize what that phrase really means. The movie “Warfare” provides a way to see and comprehend that phrase. The movie is directed by “Civil War” and “Ex Machina” director Alex Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza. Mendoza was one of the soldiers in the middle of the real-life battle that this movie shows. Garland and Mendoza don't hold back on showing the shocking, brutal and bloody side of war. If you know someone with PTSD and you want to understand, at least a little bit better what would cause something like that, this movie is for you. In this movie, Navy SEALs are sent out into Ramadi, Iraq where they gather in a multi-story home to surveil insurgents. The team settles in and goes through the tedium of just sitting and observing. Their sniper starts noticing a build-up of men getting closer to their position and soon that quiet tedium is over as the explosions start and the bullets start flying. The team does all they can to fight off the insurgents and call in to get evacuated out but what happens next just ratchets things up to a whole other level. Is it worth finding out what that is in theaters? Check out this episode to find out! “Warfare” stars Will Poulter, D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Aaron Mackenzie, Alex Brockdorff, Finn Bennett, Evan Holtzman, Michael Gandolfini, Joe Macaulay, Laurie Duncan, Noah Centineo, Taylor John Smith and Charles Melton. Warfare is a 2025 war film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland. To maintain historical accuracy, the film's material is exclusively taken from the testimonies of the platoon members, and is presented in real time beginning from the main title. The film is dedicated to platoon member Elliott Miller, played by Jarvis, who lost his leg and voice in the incident.Warfare premiered at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago on March 16, 2025, and was released in the United States by A24 on April 11, 2025, and in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2025. The film received positive reviews from critics.
Send us a textIn the chaos of combat, what truly matters isn't the mission, but the harrowing moments that forever bind soldiers together. "Warfare," the latest from filmmaking duo Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, strips away conventional war movie tropes to deliver something far more visceral and authentic.Based on Mendoza's actual experiences as a Navy SEAL during the Iraq War, this relentlessly tense 96-minute thriller drops viewers into the middle of a mission gone catastrophically wrong. When two platoons become trapped in a hostile urban environment, what follows is a masterclass in sustained tension and raw emotional devastation. Unlike traditional war films that provide character backgrounds or political context, "Warfare" deliberately avoids explaining why these soldiers are fighting—it simply shows, with unflinching clarity, what happens when young men face the brutal realities of combat. The film's exceptional sound design, crafted by Garland's longtime collaborator Glenn Freemantle, delivers an audio experience that shifts seamlessly between the chaotic cacophony of gunfire to the muffled, disorienting aftermath of blast trauma. Will Poulter leads a remarkable ensemble cast that includes Michael Galfianakis, Kit Connor, and Charles Melton, each delivering performances that capture not just the physical demands of warfare but the psychological toll of knowing death lurks around every corner. What makes "Warfare" particularly significant is how it represents Garland's artistic resurrection following his controversial 2022 film "Men." By partnering with Mendoza and focusing on craftsmanship rather than heavy-handed metaphors, Garland has rediscovered his filmmaking voice. This transformation mirrors other celebrated director comebacks we've witnessed over the years—from Wes Craven's "Scream" renaissance to Spike Lee's triumphant return with "BlacKkKlansman."Don't miss this opportunity to experience one of the most intense and authentic war films in recent memory. "Warfare" isn't just about combat—it's about bearing witness to the moments that forever change those who serve, and the brotherhood forged in circumstances most of us will never understand.Support the show

Tune in for an unforgettable conversation with Ray Mendoza—this is one you don't want to miss! In this episode you will hear: • [Marcus] You go through your military career, then we get out, and then go to Hollywood. (19:47} • I've always wanted to do this one for Elliott and for me. It's therapeutic anyway. It takes courage to tell that story. (26:10) • If you do do it, what is it gonna say? You gotta be really sure why you're doing it. (26:30) • It's hard, when you talk to somebody, to tell their story. (27:14) • Having those hard conversations with people. It's kind of difficult. And to put in on film is another level of difficulty. (27:26) • The big thing we were doing was overwatches. Clearance operations, pushing through a sector. Establishing a foothold. (31:31) • Often, we never made it to the next cycle. They would start surrounding us, then we were like “We're out.” Then we'd have to shoot our way out. (32:00) • Everybody got fragged. When you hear a piece of metal land on concrete, it's a very distinct sound. (40:55) • There's nothing I wouldn't do with the guys. Shoulder to shoulder, I'll Walk through the fire • with you guys. When you're by yourself, it's a little scary. (79:45) • Well, if we don't make it, at least we'll all die together. (80:35) • I'd rather die with my bro's, than die alone. Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz breaks down "Love Hangover," the latest collaboration between Jennie, the iconic BLACKPINK member, and Dominic Fike, the versatile American singer-songwriter known for his indie-pop vibes. Released on January 31, 2025, "Love Hangover" not only signifies a new chapter in Jennie's solo career but also marks her debut album "Ruby," set for release on March 7, 2025. The track, produced by Jennie and Ido Zmishlany with Dominic Fike's distinctive touch, blends retro soul with contemporary pop, delving into the theme of love's intoxicating, often toxic nature. The music video, directed by Bradley & Pablo and starring Riverdale's Charles Melton alongside Jennie, is a visual feast. It begins with Melton at Jennie's grave, leading into a narrative where Jennie returns from the dead, symbolizing an inability to move on from a destructive relationship. With scenes like Jennie choking on an engagement ring and being struck by lightning, the video's imagery powerfully complements the song's lyrics about being stuck in a cycle of unhealthy love.On Spotify, "Love Hangover" quickly made its mark, featured on Today's Top Hits with over 70 million playlist reach in the first hour. In South Korea, it debuted at #17 on Bugs and #118 on Genie, though it did not chart on Melon at the time of recording. While exact Billboard rankings were not yet available, the song's global appeal through streaming platforms is undeniable. The cultural impact is evident through fan engagement, with #JENNIE_LoveHangover trending on social media, driving organic streaming. Upcoming live performances in Los Angeles, New York, and Seoul from March 6-10, 2025, are anticipated to further amplify its commercial success. The high-profile nature of the music video also positions "Love Hangover" for potential TV and movie placements.Analytic Dreamz concludes that "Love Hangover" successfully merges K-pop with indie-pop, appealing to a diverse audience through its storytelling, visual artistry, and emotional resonance, setting the stage for further chart success and a vibrant tour.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Right off the back of the milestone of watching/shitting on Avengers: Endgame, followed it up with another Spider-Man movie, and to nobody's surprise it literally doesn't matter. This is an anime beach episode that has no bearing on anything else that happens in a cinematic universe. Spider-Man accidentally drones a school bus driving through the Czech Republic to get back at fakeass Charles Melton for taking revenge porn of him, and somehow it doesn't feel as insane as it should be. Everyone is so fucking tired here! Except for Jacob Batalon. Love that guy, let him be James Bond. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses potentially triggering topics that may include, but may not be limited to, abuse, harassment, substance use, disordered eating, self-harm, and/or suicide.Welcome back to Analyze Scripts, where a psychiatrist and a therapist analyze what Hollywood gets right and wrong about mental health. Today, we are analyzing the 2023 Netflix film "May/December" starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. This was a tough film to watch and a tough episode to record. In this episode, we put our minds together to try to figure out why Gracie and Joe were attracted to each other and explore the differences between sexual fetishes and paraphilic disorders. We also use what see of Gracie's background to try to figure out how she became who she is, and discuss whether we think she's capable of feeling remorse. Finally, we ask about Elizabeth's draw to the project and wonder how different (or not?) she is from Gracie based on the twist we didn't see coming. We hope you enjoy!Link to Rolling Stone article exploring the case that inspired the film: https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/mary-kay-letourneau-may-december-true-story-1234918355/InstagramTikTokWebsiteYouTube Hosted on Acast. Director: Todd Haynes Writers: Samy Burch, Alex Mechanik Starring: Natalie Portman, Charles Melton, Julianne Moore, Gabriel Chung, Andrea Frankle Runtime: 1 Hour 57 Minutes Synopsis: Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past. 2023 was really the year of the terrible parent when it comes to movie. In May December, Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman have a "terrible off" to see which one plays the worst person. Charles Melton's character unfortunately is the one taking the brunt of just how terrible those other characters are. This is a very solid film that's bound to make your skin crawl because of just how realistic it is. The gaslighting and victimization that Julianne Moore's character Gracie does in this film is top notch. You're definitely going to need to take a shower after this one. Charles Melton joins the show to talk about his role in Todd Haynes' May December. The film follows Gracie (Julianne Moore) and her husband Joe (Melton), whose notorious romance gripped the nation when it made tabloid news twenty years ago. When a Hollywood actress (Natalie Portman) meets them to do research for a film about their past, the couple buckles under the pressure. Melton recounts the chemistry read with Moore that led to his casting, explains how he and Haynes developed Joe's character leading up to the shoot, and details what it was like to film his first scene with Portman. He also explains how playing football in high school and college has informed his team-mentality as an actor, expresses gratitude for the unwavering support his parents have shown throughout his acting journey, and describes a few of his favorite pastimes -- which include camping with his Siberian Husky, Neya. Todd Haynes (Carol, Far From Heaven) directs this domestic drama/psychological thriller starring Oscar-winner Julianne Moore as a suburban woman who had an affair with an underage boy more than twenty years prior and ended up marrying him after she was eventually released from prison. This young boy has grown up into Charles Melton (Riverdale) and the two eventually had a family....now with three teenagers, two of whom are about to graduated high school. Their lives together have seemingly become more mundane now more than two decades removed from scandal....but complicating matters is the introduction of Elizabeth (Oscar-winner Natalie Portman) who is a TV actress who has come to visit them for an extended period of time. She will soon be starring in a film production recounting their affair so she has taken it upon herself to not only "study" Gracie as a person but to become involved with every one else in their lives. And what results is a truly unique story of love, loss, and regret which is unlike anything else you might have seen in recent years....and it's playing on Netflix!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
The new film May December stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton, was directed by Todd Haynes, and written for the screen by Samy Burch's–her first screenplay! Julianne Moore's Gracie began her relationship with the much-younger Joe (Charles Melton) when he was a young teen, and paid the price for this hard-to-understand liaison. Elizabeth, played by Portman, is an actress who arrives at their home to do research for her role portraying Gracie in an upcoming biopic. Critics are calling it a “booby trap” of a movie, because it's so hard to decide just who to root for. In this wide-ranging interview, Katie Couric sits down with the cast to delve into how the actors approached these complicated characters, where Haynes drew inspiration from as he directed (there's a very interesting story to the music in this film), and what excited them about the fresh take Burch brought to her screenplay. This isn't a movie that invites easy answers, but it's clear the team had great fun bringing us this story, and we hope you enjoy the peek behind the curtain!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, the panel begins by exploring Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé with Slate culture writer (and Beyhive stan) Nadira Goffe. The renowned pop diva's theatrical debut works both as a well-oiled concert documentary as well as a surprisingly heartfelt deconstruction of Knowles' previously impenetrable image of perfection. Then, the three consider Todd Haynes' May December, an emotionally curious, tonally dissonant study of life's gray areas starring Natalie Portman, longtime collaborator Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. Loosely based on the real-life relationship between Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, Haynes (and screenwriter Samy Burch) questions Hollywood's penchant for sensationalizing tragedy and the ways humans interact with each other. Finally, they are joined by EEFOP (Exceedingly Exceptional Friend of the Pod), Slate writer Dan Kois to discuss Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, a posthumous sequel to Theodor Geisel's iconic 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The original IP has been marketed and re-imagined within an inch of its life – but does new author Alastair Heim invoke any of the source materials' sincerity or deeper meaning? In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers a listener question from Timothy: “When reading for pleasure, how do you choose what to read next?” We're also accepting submissions to our yearly call-in show, where Dana, Julia, and Stephen answer questions from Culture Gabfest listeners. Get in touch! Submit a question by calling (260) 337-8260 or emailing us at culturefest@slate.com. Outro music: “Spinning the Wheels” by Dusty Decks Endorsements: Dana: A two-part endorsement that goes together like wine and cheese: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, the third studio album by Irish folk-rock band The Pogues, and “Shane MacGowan Leaves the Astral Plane,” a wonderful essay by Amanda Petrusich at The New Yorker, which memorializes the late frontman. Don't know where to start with The Pogues' catalog? Dana recommends “A Rainy Night in Soho.” Julia: Drawing inspiration from this episode's children's book segment, Julia endorses the Little Blue Truck series (written by Alice Schertle and illustrated by the late Jill McElmurry) alongside her favorite Theodor Geisel work, Hunches and Bunches. “It's the Beyoncé of Dr. Seuss books.” Steve: Paris is Burning, which pairs beautifully with Beyoncé's Renaissance. Jennie Livingston's landmark 1990 documentary is one of the most moving films Stephen has ever seen, and provides a vibrant snapshot of New York City's drag-ball scene in the ‘80s. "May December" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving positive reviews for Todd Haynes' direction, the performances from Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, and the writing from Samy Burch. Shortly after its screening at the New York Film Festival (and free of the writer's strike), Samy Burch spoke with Ema Sasic about her experience working on the film. And a few weeks later, after his Gotham win for Outstanding Supporting Performance (and a day before he would go on to win the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor alongside Burch's win for Best Screenplay), Charles Melton gave me a few moments of his time to dig deep into the character of Joe Yoo. The film is now streaming on Netflix and is up for your consideration for the 96th Academy Awards in all eligible categories. Boob gays Matt & Bowen overcome the Sunday Scaries to catch up on the culture as of late. They react to May December and discuss Julianne Moore's lisp, Charles Melton's stunning performance and how the ending of the film recalls Tár. The hosts go on to anticipate The Color Purple, inquire about people who are somehow still Scientologists, and express how they feel when they are told to "shut the fuck up". All this, RHOM, RHOBH, RHOP, a scheduling and planning of Matt & Bowen's ultimate EGOT wins, what the Kennedy Center Honors for Mariah Carey might be like, whether or not we need reputation TV just yet, Disney's Wish and that company's weird year, and whether or not we can just have good old fashioned "mama slay" for once.
