Also on today's show, a new X-Men casting rumor suggests Charles Melton could be joining Marvel Studios' highly anticipated reboot, Alien: Romulus 2 continues its search for a director, and Netflix reportedly has no plans to pursue an acquisition of Lionsgate. Today's episode focuses heavily on Spider-Man: Brand New Day as Tom Holland shares intriguing details about the film's tone and direction. The show also explores Marvel's ongoing X-Men reboot casting rumors, the future of the Alien franchise, and one of Hollywood's biggest recent business rumors involving Netflix and Lionsgate.
Charles Melton plays a lovable (but none too bright) hottie in season two of the Netflix anthology series Beef. But beneath his character's good natured surface is a man struggling to make sense of his identity and place in society. Rebecca sat down with Melton to discuss his character's transformation, what it was like collaborating with series creator Lee Sung Jin, and how he interprets the show's controversial season two ending. Melton also opens up about his evolving relationship to his Korean heritage and how becoming a father has changed his perspective on work and time. Voice Of Costume - Creating Character through Costume Design
What do our clothes reveal when status, shame, ambition, and self-protection begin controlling the person we pretend to be? Costume designer Olga Mill joins Voice of Costume for a thoughtful deep dive into Season 2 of Netflix's BEEF, exploring how clothing can expose the hidden anxieties beneath wealth, taste, success, and carefully constructed identities. Olga traces her journey from immigrating from Ukraine and learning to "read the room" visually to studying costume design at NYU and cold-calling her way onto Boardwalk Empire. She then reveals how the costumes of BEEF distinguish Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z, while also showing that every generation wrestles with the same desire to feel original, accomplished, secure, and seen. The conversation explores Carey Mulligan's Lindsay, whose fear of appearing "basic" produces an elevated but increasingly suffocating world of bold patterns, curated luxury, emerging designers, and Montecito style. Olga also discusses building characters with Oscar Isaac and Charles Melton, drawing inspiration from Instagram, art photography, regional fashion, the Fisher King myth, generational cycles, class aspiration, and emotional decay. Beyond fashion, this becomes an honest conversation about vulnerability, creative collaboration, fear of rejection, identity, status, shame, and the freedom that comes from separating your worth from your work. A must-listen for: Fans of BEEF, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Charles Melton, Netflix dramas, A24, costume design, luxury fashion, generational culture, character psychology, and emotionally layered storytelling. The "Voice of Costume" is the first podcast created between working costume designers sharing stories, inspiration, struggles, and insights into the creative career of costume design. A behind-the-scenes podcast to showcase the voices of Costume Designers around the world. Listen in on this inspirational, one-on-one conversation with Catherine Baumgardner. The TLDR here is simple: 'BEEF' Is the Best Show on Netflix right now.But hop in anyway because Ebube's summoned AJ and Soonen for a union that's decidedly NOT fueled by road rage or deteriorating romance. The trio get into everything from who's actually in the right this season, to what the show has to say about the systems that feed the human conditionThey talk about how this season is as much about class warfare as individual conflicts (4:27), in line with what this season of the show is truly about (6:31); as well as the richness of the performances (9:49), Josh and Lindsay's delusion (19:49), how power changes people (23:35) and why it's important for young men to have solid role models (30:02).Art does mirror life after all.You can support us here. Also available on YouTube.Host: Ebube UbochiGuests: AJ & SoonenProduction by: Ebube Ubochi
Editors - Laura Zempel, ACE and Lauren Connelly, ACE Although BEEF - Season 2 editors Laura Zempel and Lauren Connelly are working together for the first time, this is Laura's second season working on the series. But despite being new to one another, Laura's and Lauren's talents seamlessly combined to tackle a complex, character-driven "slow burn" with multiple storylines that required a delicate balancing of tone, including both dark comedy and psychological drama. Created by Korean director Lee Sung Jin (Sonny Lee) for Netflix, Season 2 of BEEF stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan as Joshua Martin and Lindsay Crane-Martin, and Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton as Ashley and Austin, two couples; the poor latter two blackmailing the rich former two, using footage Ashley shot of a heated argument which would threaten their image. Similar to Season 1, this incident escalates into a prolonged feud and a game of cat-and-mouse...minus one dog. LAURA ZEMPEL In addition to her Emmy®-winning work on BEEF - Season 1, Laura's skills as an editor can be seen in another Netflix series, SIRENS (2025). She has also worked on EUPHORIA (2019-22), DISPATCHES FROM ELSEWHERE (2020) and ROOM 104 (2017-19). Prior to that, she assisted on HOUSE OF CARDS (2014), DEXTER (2011-13) and IF I CAN DREAM (2010). LAUREN CONNELLY, ACE Originally from Chantilly, Virginia, Lauren graduated from The University of Southern California with a B.A. in Cinema-Television Production. Past credits include television shows such as MO on Netflix, GASLIT on Starz, MASTERS OF SEX on Showtime, THE STRAIN on FX, and THE SON on AMC. Recent feature films include SITTING IN BARS WITH CAKE for Amazon Studios, A TOURIST'S GUIDE TO LOVE on Netflix, and Rodrigo Garcia's FOUR GOOD DAYS, which premiered at Sundance. Episode 314: Beef Season 2 This week, Matt and Bob dive deep into Season 2 of Beef — unpacking its brutal class commentary, surreal comedy, and emotionally devastating character arcs. From country club elitism and generational resentment to relationships poisoned by ambition, the hosts explore why this season feels like a spiritual cousin to The White Lotus while carving out its own chaotic identity. They discuss standout performances from Charles Melton, Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and Kaylee Spaney, the season's themes of selfishness vs. selflessness, capitalism as emotional corrosion, and why the show's most haunting moments come from characters realizing they've become the very people they hate. Plus: menstruation orange juice, dead dachshunds, ChatGPT physical therapy, Tom Cruise fantasy scenarios, and a detour into HBO's bizarre murder mystery DTF St. Louis.
This week, Julia Turner and Dana Stevens are joined by Slate's own Rebecca Onion to discuss The Devil Wears Prada 2, BEEF season 2, and the NYT's best living songwriters package with Slate's music critic Carl Wilson. Twenty years on, we return to the world of The Devil Wears Prada. In the sequel, Andy, Anne Hathaway's character, must save Runway Magazine from the forces of capital, who are selling the Vogue-analogue for parts, as Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly struggles to hang on to her own power. The movie has a lot to say about the state of journalism and media with plot lines seemingly ripped from the gossip pages, but does it all come together in the edit? We discuss. Then, the second season of A24's anthology series BEEF stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan as a volatile millennial couple who enter into a feud with a younger couple, played by Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton. Set at a rich Californian golf resort and its environs, the show satirizes class and generational resentments as the characters scramble to claim the scraps of their betters at the expense of everyone else. The characters are mostly unlikeable, and the premise might be a little less original than the first season, but given BEEF's stacked cast and pedigree, does the show sizzle? Finally we're joined by Carl Wilson, Slate's music critic and author of the newsletter “Crritic!” to discuss the New York Times package: The 30 Greatest Living Songwriters. Carl submitted a ballot for the list, and the polished version isn't too far from his submission. He gets into his picks and discusses what the list is saying about the field of songwriting and the idea of a songwriter as it's been expanded to include non-traditional instrumentation and digital composition. But like all lists it has sparked debate about the inclusions (Carole King, Stevie Wonder) the exclusions (Randy Newman, Liz Phair, David Byrne) and whether Taylor Swift's inclusion was solely to get an interview. Together with Carl, we try and make sense of the list and talk about our favorites. As promised, here is Carl's full ballot (The asterisks indicate people who Carl voted for but who have since died):Willie NelsonSmokey Robinson Bobby Braddock *Brian WilsonBob DylanCarole KingRandy NewmanDolly PartonStevie Wonder*Sly StoneThe Flatlanders (Butch Hancock/Jimmie Dale Gilmore/*Joe Ely)Tom Waits & Kathleen BrennanNile RodgersDavid ByrneMark EitzelChuck D & the Bomb SquadJimmy Jam & Terry LewisStephin MerrittLiz PhairJohn Darnielle (The Mountain Goats)Missy Elliott & TimbalandThe Love Junkies (Hillary Lindsey/Lori McKenna/Liz Rose)Outkast (Big Boi/Andre 3000)Josh Osborne/Brandy Clark/Shane McAnallyPhoebe BridgersEndorsements: Julia: The SNL sketch featuring Teana Taylor, Grandpa At The Wedding.Rebecca: The new Lord Of The Flies adaptation on Netflix.

Based on Mendoza's experiences during the Iraq War as a U.S. Navy SEAL, the film depicts an encounter he and his platoon experienced on November 19, 2006 in the wake of the Battle of Ramadi. To maintain historical accuracy, the film's material is exclusively taken from the testimonies of the platoon members, and is presented in real time. It stars an ensemble cast that includes D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza, alongside Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Joseph Quinn, Charles Melton, Noah Centineo, and Michael Gandolfini. We then talk about 'Paths of Glory' a 1957 American anti-war film directed by Stanley Kubrick, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson. It is adapted from the 1935 novel of the same name by Humphrey Cobb, which was in turn was based on the Souain corporals affair during World War I. The film stars Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax, the commanding officer of French soldiers who refuse to continue a suicidal attack, after which Dax defends them against charges of cowardice in a court-martial. “War is hell” is a common phrase, but as we live our peacetime lives, it can be hard to visualize what that phrase really means. The movie “Warfare” provides a way to see and comprehend that phrase. The movie is directed by “Civil War” and “Ex Machina” director Alex Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza. Mendoza was one of the soldiers in the middle of the real-life battle that this movie shows. Garland and Mendoza don't hold back on showing the shocking, brutal and bloody side of war. If you know someone with PTSD and you want to understand, at least a little bit better what would cause something like that, this movie is for you. In this movie, Navy SEALs are sent out into Ramadi, Iraq where they gather in a multi-story home to surveil insurgents. The team settles in and goes through the tedium of just sitting and observing. Their sniper starts noticing a build-up of men getting closer to their position and soon that quiet tedium is over as the explosions start and the bullets start flying. The team does all they can to fight off the insurgents and call in to get evacuated out but what happens next just ratchets things up to a whole other level. Is it worth finding out what that is in theaters? Check out this episode to find out! “Warfare” stars Will Poulter, D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Aaron Mackenzie, Alex Brockdorff, Finn Bennett, Evan Holtzman, Michael Gandolfini, Joe Macaulay, Laurie Duncan, Noah Centineo, Taylor John Smith and Charles Melton. Warfare is a 2025 war film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland. Based on Mendoza's experiences during the Iraq War as a U.S. Navy SEAL, the film is a re-enactment of an encounter he and his platoon experienced on November 19, 2006 in the wake of the Battle of Ramadi. To maintain historical accuracy, the film's material is exclusively taken from the testimonies of the platoon members, and is presented in real time beginning from the main title. It stars an ensemble cast that includes D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza alongside Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Joseph Quinn, Charles Melton, Noah Centineo, and Michael Gandolfini. The film is dedicated to platoon member Elliott Miller, played by Jarvis, who lost his leg and voice in the incident.Warfare premiered at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago on March 16, 2025, and was released in the United States by A24 on April 11, 2025, and in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2025. The film received positive reviews from critics.
Send us a textIn the chaos of combat, what truly matters isn't the mission, but the harrowing moments that forever bind soldiers together. "Warfare," the latest from filmmaking duo Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, strips away conventional war movie tropes to deliver something far more visceral and authentic.Based on Mendoza's actual experiences as a Navy SEAL during the Iraq War, this relentlessly tense 96-minute thriller drops viewers into the middle of a mission gone catastrophically wrong. When two platoons become trapped in a hostile urban environment, what follows is a masterclass in sustained tension and raw emotional devastation. Unlike traditional war films that provide character backgrounds or political context, "Warfare" deliberately avoids explaining why these soldiers are fighting—it simply shows, with unflinching clarity, what happens when young men face the brutal realities of combat. The film's exceptional sound design, crafted by Garland's longtime collaborator Glenn Freemantle, delivers an audio experience that shifts seamlessly between the chaotic cacophony of gunfire to the muffled, disorienting aftermath of blast trauma. Will Poulter leads a remarkable ensemble cast that includes Michael Galfianakis, Kit Connor, and Charles Melton, each delivering performances that capture not just the physical demands of warfare but the psychological toll of knowing death lurks around every corner. What makes "Warfare" particularly significant is how it represents Garland's artistic resurrection following his controversial 2022 film "Men." By partnering with Mendoza and focusing on craftsmanship rather than heavy-handed metaphors, Garland has rediscovered his filmmaking voice. This transformation mirrors other celebrated director comebacks we've witnessed over the years—from Wes Craven's "Scream" renaissance to Spike Lee's triumphant return with "BlacKkKlansman."Don't miss this opportunity to experience one of the most intense and authentic war films in recent memory. "Warfare" isn't just about combat—it's about bearing witness to the moments that forever change those who serve, and the brotherhood forged in circumstances most of us will never understand.Support the show

It's therapeutic anyway. It takes courage to tell that story. (26:10) • If you do do it, what is it gonna say? You gotta be really sure why you're doing it. (26:30) • It's hard, when you talk to somebody, to tell their story. (27:14) • Having those hard conversations with people. It's kind of difficult. And to put in on film is another level of difficulty. (27:26) • The big thing we were doing was overwatches. Clearance operations, pushing through a sector. Establishing a foothold. (31:31) • Often, we never made it to the next cycle. They would start surrounding us, then we were like “We're out.” Then we'd have to shoot our way out. (32:00) • Everybody got fragged. When you hear a piece of metal land on concrete, it's a very distinct sound. (40:55) • There's nothing I wouldn't do with the guys. Shoulder to shoulder, I'll Walk through the fire • with you guys. When you're by yourself, it's a little scary. (79:45) • Well, if we don't make it, at least we'll all die together. (80:35) • I'd rather die with my bro's, than die alone. Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz breaks down "Love Hangover," the latest collaboration between Jennie, the iconic BLACKPINK member, and Dominic Fike, the versatile American singer-songwriter known for his indie-pop vibes. Released on January 31, 2025, "Love Hangover" not only signifies a new chapter in Jennie's solo career but also marks her debut album "Ruby," set for release on March 7, 2025. The track, produced by Jennie and Ido Zmishlany with Dominic Fike's distinctive touch, blends retro soul with contemporary pop, delving into the theme of love's intoxicating, often toxic nature. The music video, directed by Bradley & Pablo and starring Riverdale's Charles Melton alongside Jennie, is a visual feast. It begins with Melton at Jennie's grave, leading into a narrative where Jennie returns from the dead, symbolizing an inability to move on from a destructive relationship. With scenes like Jennie choking on an engagement ring and being struck by lightning, the video's imagery powerfully complements the song's lyrics about being stuck in a cycle of unhealthy love.On Spotify, "Love Hangover" quickly made its mark, featured on Today's Top Hits with over 70 million playlist reach in the first hour. In South Korea, it debuted at #17 on Bugs and #118 on Genie, though it did not chart on Melon at the time of recording. While exact Billboard rankings were not yet available, the song's global appeal through streaming platforms is undeniable. The cultural impact is evident through fan engagement, with #JENNIE_LoveHangover trending on social media, driving organic streaming. Upcoming live performances in Los Angeles, New York, and Seoul from March 6-10, 2025, are anticipated to further amplify its commercial success. The high-profile nature of the music video also positions "Love Hangover" for potential TV and movie placements.Analytic Dreamz concludes that "Love Hangover" successfully merges K-pop with indie-pop, appealing to a diverse audience through its storytelling, visual artistry, and emotional resonance, setting the stage for further chart success and a vibrant tour.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The new film May December stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton, was directed by Todd Haynes, and written for the screen by Samy Burch's–her first screenplay! Julianne Moore's Gracie began her relationship with the much-younger Joe (Charles Melton) when he was a young teen, and paid the price for this hard-to-understand liaison. Elizabeth, played by Portman, is an actress who arrives at their home to do research for her role portraying Gracie in an upcoming biopic. Critics are calling it a “booby trap” of a movie, because it's so hard to decide just who to root for. In this wide-ranging interview, Katie Couric sits down with the cast to delve into how the actors approached these complicated characters, where Haynes drew inspiration from as he directed (there's a very interesting story to the music in this film), and what excited them about the fresh take Burch brought to her screenplay. This isn't a movie that invites easy answers, but it's clear the team had great fun bringing us this story, and we hope you enjoy the peek behind the curtain!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, the panel begins by exploring Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé with Slate culture writer (and Beyhive stan) Nadira Goffe. The renowned pop diva's theatrical debut works both as a well-oiled concert documentary as well as a surprisingly heartfelt deconstruction of Knowles' previously impenetrable image of perfection. Then, the three consider Todd Haynes' May December, an emotionally curious, tonally dissonant study of life's gray areas starring Natalie Portman, longtime collaborator Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. Loosely based on the real-life relationship between Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, Haynes (and screenwriter Samy Burch) questions Hollywood's penchant for sensationalizing tragedy and the ways humans interact with each other. Finally, they are joined by EEFOP (Exceedingly Exceptional Friend of the Pod), Slate writer Dan Kois to discuss Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, a posthumous sequel to Theodor Geisel's iconic 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The original IP has been marketed and re-imagined within an inch of its life – but does new author Alastair Heim invoke any of the source materials' sincerity or deeper meaning? In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers a listener question from Timothy: “When reading for pleasure, how do you choose what to read next?” We're also accepting submissions to our yearly call-in show, where Dana, Julia, and Stephen answer questions from Culture Gabfest listeners. Get in touch! Submit a question by calling (260) 337-8260 or emailing us at culturefest@slate.com. Outro music: “Spinning the Wheels” by Dusty Decks Endorsements: Dana: A two-part endorsement that goes together like wine and cheese: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, the third studio album by Irish folk-rock band The Pogues, and “Shane MacGowan Leaves the Astral Plane,” a wonderful essay by Amanda Petrusich at The New Yorker, which memorializes the late frontman. Don't know where to start with The Pogues' catalog? Dana recommends “A Rainy Night in Soho.” Julia: Drawing inspiration from this episode's children's book segment, Julia endorses the Little Blue Truck series (written by Alice Schertle and illustrated by the late Jill McElmurry) alongside her favorite Theodor Geisel work, Hunches and Bunches. “It's the Beyoncé of Dr. Seuss books.” Steve: Paris is Burning, which pairs beautifully with Beyoncé's Renaissance. Jennie Livingston's landmark 1990 documentary is one of the most moving films Stephen has ever seen, and provides a vibrant snapshot of New York City's drag-ball scene in the ‘80s. Boob gays Matt & Bowen overcome the Sunday Scaries to catch up on the culture as of late. They react to May December and discuss Julianne Moore's lisp, Charles Melton's stunning performance and how the ending of the film recalls Tár. The hosts go on to anticipate The Color Purple, inquire about people who are somehow still Scientologists, and express how they feel when they are told to "shut the fuck up". All this, RHOM, RHOBH, RHOP, a scheduling and planning of Matt & Bowen's ultimate EGOT wins, what the Kennedy Center Honors for Mariah Carey might be like, whether or not we need reputation TV just yet, Disney's Wish and that company's weird year, and whether or not we can just have good old fashioned "mama slay" for once. This episode has huge tits.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
