This week on The Cultural Frontline, Anu Anand hears from the young poets expressing the hopes and fears of their generation. American film director Carlos López Estrada explains how a spoken word showcase affected him so deeply that he wanted to share his new love of poetry with the world. It inspired him to work with young poets in Los Angeles to create his latest film, Summertime. Carlos Lopez Estrada and one of the poets in Summertime, Raul Herrera, discuss how they collaborated to make a film entirely in verse. Young poets from Lebanon and the UK have come together to write new work, inspired by their home cities of Beirut and Coventry. The finished pieces will be performed as part of the BBC's Contains Strong Language Festival. Two of the writers, Kelvin Ampong and Nour Annan explain what they learned from each other and how they found common ground. Zambian writer Musenga L Katonga has been working with a British illustrator to create an animated online poem, exploring the theme of beauty and chaos. He explains how he wrote about escaping the noise of social media to find solace in the written word and discusses performing a TED Talk about Zambian identity, in spoken word. In this episode of the Get Lit Minute, your weekly poetry podcast, we spotlight American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist, Langston Hughes. One of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance.excerpt of “Let America Be America Again”Let America be America again.Let it be the dream it used to be.Let it be the pioneer on the plainSeeking a home where he himself is free. (America never was America to me.) Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—Let it be that great strong land of loveWhere never kings connive nor tyrants schemeThat any man be crushed by one above. (It never was America to me.) O, let my land be a land where LibertyIs crowned with no false patriotic wreath,But opportunity is real, and life is free,Equality is in the air we breathe. (There's never been equality for me,Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.“) Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark? And who are you that draws your veil across the stars? I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.I am the red man driven from the land,I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—And finding only the same old stupid planOf dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak. I am the young man, full of strength and hope,Tangled in that ancient endless chainOf profit, power, gain, of grab the land!Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!Of work the men! Of take the pay!Of owning everything for one's own greed! ....Read the full excerpt and learn more about Hughes at http://getlitanthology.org/poemdetail/57/Watch our Get Lit Poets perform in the movie "Summertime" directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, and written and produced by Get Lit. In this week's episode of the Get Lit Minute, your weekly poetry podcast, we spotlight the life and work of poet Krysten Hill. Also make sure you watch the movie "Summertime" featuring 27 of our Get Lit Poets and directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, in theaters on July 9th. More info at http://www.getlit.org"Nothing"I ask a student how I can help her. Nothing is on her paper. It's been that way for thirty-five minutes. She has a headache. She asks to leave early. Maybe I asked the wrong question. I've always been dumb with questions. When I hurt, I too have a hard time accepting advice or gentleness.I owe for an education that hurt, and collectors call my mama's house. I do nothing about my unpaid bills as if that will help. I do nothing about the mold on my ceiling, and it spreads. I do nothing about the cat's litter box, and she pisses on my new bath mat. Nothing isn't an absence. Silence isn't nothing. I told a woman I loved her, and she never talked to me again. I told my mama a man hurt me,and her hard silence told me to keep my story to myself. Nothing is full of something, a mass that grows where you cut at it. I've lost three aunts when white doctors told them the thing they felt was nothing. My aunt said nothing when it clawed at her breathing.I sat in a room while it killed her. I am afraid when nothing keeps me in bed for days. I imagine what my beautiful aunts are becoming underground, and I cry for them in my sleep where no one can see. Nothing is in my bedroom, but I smell my aunt's perfume and wake to my name called from nowhere. I never looked into a sky and said it was empty. Maybe that's why I imagine a god up there to fill what seems unimaginable. Some days, I want to live inside the words more than my own black body. When the white man shoves me so that he can get on the bus first, when he says I am nothing but fits it inside a word, and no one stops him, I wear a bruise in the morning where he touched me before I was born. My mama's shame spreads inside me. I've heard her say there was nothing in a grocery store she could afford. I've heard her tell the landlord she had nothing to her name. There was nothing I could do for the young black woman that disappeared on her way to campus. They found her purse and her phone, but nothing led them to her. Nobody was there to hold Renisha McBride's hand when she was scared of dying. I worry poems are nothing against it. My mama said that if I became a poet or a teacher, I'd make nothing, but I've thrown words like rocks and hit something in a room when I aimed for a window. One student says when he writes, it feels like nothing can stop him, and his laugher unlocks a door. He invites me into his living.Support the show (https://getlit.org/donate/)
Dennis is joined via Zoom by four of the creative forces behind the new film Summertime; director Carlos Lopez Estrada, and actors / poets Paolina Acuña González, Raul Herrera and Marquesha Babers. Carlos shares the projects origin story, recalling how he saw a live performance of a group of LA poets and was so knocked out by their performances that he came up with the day-in-the-life-of-Los Angeles idea as a way to showcase them all in a feature film. Paolina talks about her poem "Red Lipstick" and the spectacular choreographed dance number the comes out of it in the film. Raul talks about his poem "Clouds," which he wrote years ago and marvels that something he created as a way to cope with grief ended up being immortalized on film in Summertime. And Marquesha talks about her poem, "Shallow" and the heartless man who inspired it. Other topics include: where the title Summertime comes from, how the San Fernando Valley fits into all of this and the joy of creating art for the sake of creating art. https://gooddeedentertainment.com/summertime/

In the same tradition as other recent decade(s) later sequels, Coming 2 America does some things right and many things wrong. But, the spirit of the original is kept in tact...without any of the thoughtful and cleverness that made the original so wonderful and well received. Akeem is great, as always though! Roger (2/10) - Grayson (5/10) Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney+) The latest Disney flick is here and her name is Raya and the Last Dragon. As 96% of the time, Disney does not disappoint. A new princess and a new region represented now also in the Disney family. It's an emotional ride, pleasantly well paced with a fun and engaging story. Though, sorry to say it doesn't master any of those, but does them well. Tiny humans and big humans alike will enjoy this even for repeated viewings. "When you record that podcast episode, just don't tell me about it. Plausible deniability." This week on the podcast, podcast host Jim Saunders is joined by special guest Thomas Lin to talk about the feature length narrative debut from director Carlos Lopez Estrada, "Blindspotting"! Evocative, honest, and multifaceted in its portrayal of gentrification and racial identity in America, it's easily one of the most important films of 2018. In this episode, we discuss the social issues presented throughout the film, its uncanny blend of comedy and drama, and how its 95 minute runtime makes its themes succinct and pack a real emotional weight. See the film for yourself, then check out the 57th episode of the UW Film Club Podcast! You can find us on Facebook at /UWFilmClub, and on Twitter and Instagram @FilmClubUW. January tends to be a slow month when it comes to new releases which is why we are going back and reviewing one of the 2018 films that we missed. This weeks film is Blindspotting which tells the story of a man, played by Daveed Diggs, who while on probation, begins to re-evaluate his relationship with his volatile best friend played by Rafael Casal. Listen in as we also talk trailers from the Super Bowl.
Welcome back, purveyors of puerile sights, sounds, and succulence! It’s episode two of FOOD COURT, your new favorite podcast where we brave the malls and movies halls so you don’t have to!Welp, it only took us one episode to veer wildly off-format, but fear not, dear listeners, your humble narrators found some non-food court sustenance nearby, and it paired quite nicely with BLINDSPOTTING, the debut film from director Carlos Lopez Estrada and writers/stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. The Panda Express was not looking very Express-y so this episode’s Edibles was brought to you by El Mariachi, a delightfully downtrodden Mexican joint near the one and only Regal Cinemas on Thompson Lane - you know, the Bollywood joint.Grab your popcorn, sneak in your snacks, and get out your antacids, because it’s time to feast your ears on some celluloid cellulite! Bon Appetit, Food Courtesans!
This episode of “About To Review”/ “About To Interview” features my conversation with director Carlos Lopez Estrada from the new film "Blindspotting" starring Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal! This interview took place during the 2018 Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF).
