This week, Tina and Julia from the Pal Around Podcast join Jeff to talk about the new Snow White live action film starring Rachel Zegler. Jeff caught an early screening and discusses this much-debated release from the Walt Disney Company. We talk about the music - old and new, the changes from the original animated classic to create a new story, those animated dwarfs, and the new film's possible impact on the public perception of Disney remakes. Then, Julia and Tina talk about "Directing at Disney: In Conversation with Director Brenda Chapman and Historian Mindy Johnson" at the Walt Disney Family Museum. Brenda opened up about her career in animation, both for Disney and outside of the company, and shared stories about her collaborations, her history in the industry, and creating and co-directing Brave for Pixar.

I've been a PR man, an ad man, a stringer for a weekly newspaper. I am a man of faith, a loving husband, and a father to two kids on the autism spectrum, the younger of which has profound needs. Over the last few years, I've been doing more PowerPointing and airport drinking, parenting and husbanding than writing, and I'm trying to change that. This website is a step toward that goal. I haven't been completely infertile. You can see more about my work here. I blog here (sometimes) about writing, reading, marketing, faith, and other topics. I've been a practicing veterinarian, a public health researcher, and a medical writer. But through it all has been my love of books. Like you, I've always loved to read. And like you I'm sure, my tastes have changed over time from Jules Verne and Tolkien to Hemingway, Steven King, and Michael Crichton. Likewise, my writing has changed from consumer handbooks and website content to fast-paced thriller novels, which are a lot more fun. Just as great chefs have distinctive styles, every good author has a distinguishing “voice” that both labels and defines their work. Read a couple of pages of Hemingway and you won't have to be told that Papa cooked the bouillabaisse. My voice diverges a bit between novels and short stories. As a child of the Twilight Zone, my short fiction deals mostly with quirky situations and surprise endings, usually with a touch of humor to leaven the bread. My novels, on the other hand, start out with a thrilling roux of “what if,” then add two cups of violence, a tablespoon of humor, and a hefty dash of spicy sex. I hope you like what I've been cooking up for you.Larceny & Last ChancesSometimes it's about doing the right thing. Sometimes it's about getting even. KM Rockwood draws on a varied background for stories, among them working as a laborer in a steel fabrication plant, operating glass melters and related equipment in a fiberglass manufacturing facility, and supervising an inmate work crew in a large medium security state prison. These jobs, as well as work as a special education teacher in an alternative high school and a GED teacher in county detention facilities, provide most of the background for novels and short stories.Larceny & Last Chances: 22 Stories of Mystery & Suspense (A Superior Shores Anthology Book 4)Sometimes it's about doing the right thing. It has been 100 years since a young animator sold his first film series, called Alice Comedies, to a distributor. Without knowing, he was starting what became one of the world's biggest media empires. The company took his family name: Disney. The studio has led and shaped the animation industry for generations, and it's now in the very heart of global culture. In this episode of The Cultural Frontline, we speak to animators responsible for some of Disney and Pixar's most successful films. We also explore the creative, technological and cultural challenges Disney and the wider animation industry are facing today. Veteran animator Floyd Norman has worked with Disney since the 1950s, on films like Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book. His colleague Tony Bancroft was the co-director of Mulan and the creator of one of the most beloved Disney characters, Pumbaa the warthog, in The Lion King. They talk about the milestones of Disney history. Oscar-winning director Brenda Chapman reflects on the role of women on screen and in production, and talks about the inspiration for Merida, Brave's anti-princess. Plus, Rebecca Sugar, and Frank Abney discuss how the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and the Black Lives Matter movement are changing the animation industry. Presenter: Brian Sibley Producer: Constanza Hola

In this episode of PixMix, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2022 Pixar film Turning Red directed by Domee Shi, making her the first solo female director since Brenda Chapman's co-directed Brave back in 2012. The film takes place in 2002 where a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl named Meilin Lee who is going through the struggles of trying to please her strict mother Ming, yet trying to being herself with her friends Miriam, Priya, and Abby, especially with their favorite boy band 4Town. One morning, she wakes up and finds herself transformed into a giant red panda whenever she has strong emotions. Meilin must make the decision on whether to take her family's advice and remove the red panda or her friends' advice and embrace it. When the film was released on Disney+, it made $2.5 million dollars on its opening weekend and became the #1 premiere film globally receiving positive reviews from critics calling it "ambitious", "unique", and "risk taking" with its metaphors of puberty. However, similar to Domee Shi's short Bao, it became controversial with animation critics, Disney and Pixar fans, and Christian parents calling it "inappropriate", teaching kids to disobey their parents, limited with its universal appeal, "Cal-Arts" art style, and feeling “out of place" compared to other Pixar films. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

If you could change your fate... would you? We're talking about Brave, Pixar's Academy Award-winning fairy tale and a production full of firsts: Pixar's first historical film, first film to feature a female lead character, and first film to be directed by a woman (until it wasn't). We talk all about one of Pixar's bigger public controversies, the removal of director Brenda Chapman from her own film, and how it sheds light on more recent Pixar controversy. And of course, we spend plenty of time talking about an incredibly unique entry in the Pixar canon featuring a princess, magic, a dark legend, and... mathematics? In early 2021, Centrum hosted award-winning director, writer, and story artist, Brenda Chapman for a month-long residency. A few months later, Michelle Hagewood catches up with Chapman to revisit conversations started over that residency. Chapman reflects on the ups and downs of her long career at Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar and shares her early influences and the threads that connect to her newest projects and endeavors. Brenda Chapman started her career as a story artist at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1987, where she worked on several animated films including The Little Mermaid, and the Oscar nominated Beauty and the Beast. Chapman was the story supervisor on the original The Lion King, for which she won ASIFA’s Annie Award. She then helped launch DreamWorks Animation Studios, and co-directed the 1998 release of the Oscar winning Prince of Egypt. Chapman was the first woman to direct an animated feature for a major Hollywood studio. Joining Pixar Animation Studios in September 2003, Chapman created, wrote and directed Brave – inspired by her relationship with her daughter - for which she was the first woman to win an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film of 2012. Her first live-action film, Come Away, starring David Oyelowo and Angelina Jolie, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Chapman and her husband, filmmaker Kevin Lima (Enchanted, Disney’s Tarzan, A Goofy Movie), created ‘Twas Entertainment, which focuses on family entertainment. Currently, Chapman is writing a feature script for Gutsy Animations UK, executive producing on projects for ‘Twas, as well as working on a novel, a memoir and a children’s book.
This week on On Story, award-winning writer and director Brenda Chapman discusses how female perspective, a love of art, and an understanding of flawed characters influenced her writing in the animated classics The Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, and Brave. Brenda Chapman is an American writer, storyboard artist, and director. In 1998, she became the first woman to direct an animated feature from a major studio, DreamWorks Animation's The Prince of Egypt. In 2012, she co-directed the Disney/Pixar film Brave with Mark Andrews, becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Writer and Professor Greg Garrett spoke with Chapman about her process of taking ideas from the drawing board to the screen at the Austin Film Festival. This week on On Story we'll hear from veteran screenwriters John Lee Hancock, Brian Helgeland and Robin Swicord on the process of creating compelling characters. And later, award-winning writer and director Brenda Chapman discusses how female perspective, a love of art, and an understanding of flawed characters influenced her writing in the animated classics The Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, and Brave. Characters are the emotional anchor for all great stories. No matter how intricate the plot, well-developed characters are crucial ingredients for engaging an audience and encouraging them to invest in a story's journey. I spoke with a group of veteran screenwriters about their process of crafting compelling characters at the Austin Film Festival. John Lee Hancock is a director, writer and producer most known for his work on The Blind Side, A Perfect World and his latest film The Little Things. Brian Helgeland is a screenwriter, producer and director. His writing credits include L.A. Confidential, Man on Fire, and A Knight's Tale. This week, we're joined by KT Jean to chat about Brenda Chapman and her 1998 debut, The Prince of Egypt. We talk a bit about Chapman's co-directors Steve Hickner and Simon Wells, the death of traditional animation at DreamWorks, our secular perspectives on this story's theology, Chapman's career since The Prince of Egypt, and much more. You can rent The Prince of Egypt right now at all the usual places. As we note in the episode, we had originally recorded an episode in full on Alma Ha'rel and Honey Boy. For reasons we go into, we decided not to release that episode, but that episode will be released soon as a shorter, re-edited bonus on Ha'rel's work. For Top Five this week, KT brought Top Five Disney Sidekicks. You can listen to KT's excellent work as co-host on Vaulting the Walt! For our charity this week, KT wanted to plug supporting our local indie cinemas so that we can return to them when it's safe to do so. KT's local is The Loft in Tucson, and mine is The Belcourt in Nashville. Thanks as always to Ross Kroeber for the show name, Aaron Taylor-Johnson for the show art, and to Podbean for hosting us.
