To mark the Easter break, Fantasy/Animation crack open Rise of the Guardians (Peter Ramsey, 2012), the 2012 computer-animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation studio and a Hollywood blockbuster adapted from the children's book series by William Joyce. Something of a box-office failure and a film that prompted an $87 million loss for DreamWorks, Rise of the Guardians is, as Chris and Alex suggest, certainly a complex and uneven effort that nonetheless incorporates some intriguing animated elements as part of its tale of belief and wonder. Listen as they map the film's place as entry number 19 within the expanding DreamWorks canon and how it emerged at a crucial moment in their own corporate expansion; the characters of Jack Frost, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sandman, and Pitch Black as renditions of different types of animation; drawing, artistry, and the Frozen-esque spectacle of cryokinesis; and how Peter Ramsey's film narrativises the value of what it means for children to believe in fantasy. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Today we turn our eye to that most iconic of sad street-level heroes, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Starting with Tobey McGuire in 2002, Pete and Martha dig into the screen iterations of Spidey, and discuss what makes one successful. Homework for the episode: look, it's a whole lot of Spider-Man, but we dig in deep on Spider-Man (2002, dir. Sam Raimi), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012, dir. Mark Webb), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017, dir. Jon Watts) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, dir. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman)

This week, we take a break from the DTV dreck to get a little more...animated, let's say, with a pair of charming animated Nic Cage jaunts into the world of superheroes! And we've got our trusty sidekick, Alonso Duralde (Linoleum Knife), to join us on this crime-fighting crusade! First up is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, and Rodney Rothman's dizzying animated epic about Miles Morales' (Shameik Moore) initiation into the jam-packed multiverse of Spider-Man! It's still one of the freshest takes on the web-slinger we've ever seen, and its unique blend of animation styles has left an indelible mark on the moviemaking landscape. But more importantly for our interests, it has Nic Cage as a hardbitten, noir-tinged Spidey that gives the actor a change to break out his James Cagney impression. Then we zap into another meta-charmer, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, following the cherubic team of sidekicks and their desperate efforts to get a superhero movie like every other character under the sun. It's a delightful winner with plenty of great gags for kids and adults, but we're just thrilled Cage finally got to play his childhood hero, Superman (albeit one more Christopher Reeve-inflected than his swoopy-haired turn in the abortive Tim Burton Superman Lives). In the grand tradition of raining on everyone's parade, we're bucking our usual schedule and revisiting/taking to task the critically acclaimed, Academy Award winning Sony Animation extravaganza Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a film Letterboxd users have rated as better than Goodfellas, Sunset Boulevard, and Persona. While the internet is currently freaking out over trans-coded Gwen Stacy, Nicole, Stu, and resident Spider-Man expert Cole bring some clarity to an admittedly beautiful looking but otherwise bog-standard Marvel movie about multiverses and believing in yourself that's very clearly written by white people trying to appeal to the young PoC Tumblr demographic (save for co-director Peter Ramsey). The only thing whiter than the production team behind Spider-Verse are the creative minds who brought us Miles Morales, a character whose origins lie in someone at Marvel thinking, "What if we made Spider-Man a young Obama?" And before you come to yell at us for not liking your favorite movie of all time, consider reading the late Dwayne McDuffie's 1989 letter to Marvel calling out the whiteness of their black characters and see just how prescient it reads regarding the creation and use of Miles Morales. Thank you for listening! This is a "clip heavy" episode. If I felt the disturbance in the Force, I went with it. The Pirate finally reveals where Moff Gideon ISN'T, which is what we all figured. The Armorer still doesn't have a name, but she elevates Bo-Katan and House Kryze to the heights of Mandalore...if she has that authority, but I mean, who is she, really? Zeb is back. Well, he was back for a couple of lines and we might not see him again anytime soon, but HEY! Live action Lasat! We are all out of trailer footage. Fresh out folks. We are officially flyin' blind for the last three episodes. The good news? Bryce Dallas Howard is up next. Peter Ramsey...nice job with Chapter 21, but we have GOT to talk with Joseph Shirley and the sound mixers about too much noise. I want to hear the dialogue better. Just me? Nobody else feels that way? We started the season with Din Djarin on a quest. Now it looks like we're wrapping up the last half of the season by giving Bo-Katan one of her own. Hey...This is the Way! In Episode 138 of The Force Geeks: A Star Wars Podcast, Nate, Jake and Chris dissect the fifth episode of the third season (chapter 21) of The Mandalorian, including the show giving us a good ol' fashioned 'star war' with the pirate siege, while also setting up so much ahead with the details surrounding Moff Gideon's disappearance, more treachery from Elia Kane, a new home for the Mandalorian people and a new mission for Bo-Katan Kryze. There was also that awesome cameo from a beloved Rebels character that had the Geeks all sorts of geeked out!Plus, the Geeks break down the double-episode finale (episodes 15 & 16) of the second season of The Bad Batch TV series in this spoiler special. They break down the main takeaways of that big loss for Clone Force 99, the Rogue One character cameos and the big twist Omega discovers in this cliffhanger episode. Plus, a new report from MakingStarWars.com details what could be taking place on the new Ahsoka series and how the show will rescue Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger that's worth a discussion.
