St. Basil the Great – The Doctors of the Church with Dr. Matthew Bunson Born: 330 AD, Kayseri, Turkey Died: January 1, 379 AD, Kayseri, Turkey Siblings: Gregory of Nyssa, Macrina the Younger, Theosebia Dr. Matthew Bunson and Kris McGregor discuss the life of St. Basil the Great. St. Basil defended Christ’s divinity during the Arian controversy, contributed significantly to understanding the Holy Trinity and pneumatology. Pope St. Pius V declared him a doctor of the Church in 1568 amid the Council of Trent. St. Basil’s commitment to social teachings, exemplified as bishop of Caesarea, reflects his deep concern for the dignity of every person. The significance of his family, including siblings like St. Gregory of Nyssa, is acknowledged. St. Basil’s emphasis on eternal life and indifference to worldly achievements serves as a key aspect of his legacy. Dr. Bunson provides insights into the multifaceted contributions of St. Basil as a defender of faith, social advocate, and influential figure in the development of monastic traditions. Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions: * How does St. Basil’s defense of Christ’s divinity during the Arian controversy inspire your understanding of the importance of precise theological language in discussions about faith? * In what ways can we, like St. Basil, actively engage in social teachings and demonstrate a deep concern for the dignity of every person in our communities? * Reflect on St. Basil’s contributions to monasticism, particularly his emphasis on communal living, care for the poor, and humility. How can these principles be applied to your own spiritual journey? * Consider the significance of St. Basil’s family, including St. Gregory of Nyssa. How does the family dynamic contribute to their collective impact on the Church, and how might our own families reflect and support our faith? * St. Basil placed great importance on eternal life over earthly achievements. How can we adopt a similar perspective in our daily lives, focusing on spiritual growth and the pursuit of the divine rather than worldly success? For more from Dr. Matthew Bunson check out his Discerning Hearts page Dr. Matthew E. Bunson is a Register senior editor and senior contributor to EWTN News. St. Gregory of Nazianzus – The Doctors of the Church with Dr. Matthew Bunson Born: 329 AD Died: January 1, 390 AD Dr. Matthew Bunson and Kris McGregor explore St. Gregory of Nazianzus (Nazianzen), a doctor of the Church. St. Gregory faced the Arian heresy and a tension between solitude and serving as a priest. His theological contributions include emphasizing “consubstantial” and defending the Trinity. Dr. Bunson highlights his views on Christ’s full humanity, theosis, and the connection between theology and prayer, making special note of Pope Benedict XVI’s insights on St. Gregory as well. St. Gregory’s teachings provide timeless prescriptions for addressing heresy, offering valuable lessons for today’s challenges in defending the faith. Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions: * How does St. Gregory of Nazianzus’ struggle between solitude and active service resonate with your own spiritual journey and the challenges of balancing personal prayer with engagement in the world? * In what ways can St. Gregory’s response to the Arian heresy inspire you to actively defend and uphold the Church’s teachings in your community or personal life? * Reflect on the significance of the term “consubstantial” in describing the relationship within the Trinity. How does this theological concept deepen your understanding of God? * Consider St. Gregory’s emphasis on theosis. How can you strive to become more like Christ in your daily life? * How can you integrate prayer into your study of theology to enhance your relationship with God and the Church? “St. Jerome is best known for compiling the Latin edition of the Bible, called the Vulgate, and rightly so,” said David G. Bonagura, Jr., an adjunct professor of classical languages at St. Joseph's Seminary, New York, and adjunct professor of theology at Catholic Distance University. He serves as Religion Editor of The University Bookman, the flagship publication of the Russell Kirk Center. He is the 2023-2024 Cardinal Newman Society Fellow for Eucharistic Education.  “He is also known for a famous quotation: ‘Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.' But there is more to St. Jerome than this. We have 123 of his letters, written in a style equivalent to the modern essay, on a variety of topics. His letters of consolation stand out as some of the greatest examples of Latin prose and of pastoral care." The book contains seven letters written by St. Jerome from the years 389–412. In addition to translating the letters, Mr. Bonagura wrote an extended introduction to St. Jerome's life, work, and thought. He also wrote a brief paragraph before each letter identifying the deceased, the bereaved, and the context. "Living out the faith and passing it on is more an action of something that is caught rather than taught," says David G. Bonagura, Jr., an adjunct professor of classical languages at St. Joseph's Seminary, New York, and adjunct professor of theology at Catholic Distance University. In his new article in the Catholic World Report: "Can Catholicism be passed along without Catholic Culture?" Bonagura argues that faith needs to be cultivated by more than "simply" going to Mass. It needs to be passed along through tradition and action. "Fast forward to today when we don't have those things. It's much more difficult for faith to take root because there's nothing supporting the supernatural element." Bonagura continues, "What did Christ promise us? He didn't promise us roses and victories in this life. He promised us the cross. The cross is the means to the Resurrection and fighting things like this difficult culture - that's part of the cross. It's not easy to do but it's how our Lord chooses to sanctify us. That's His means of crucifying us to the world so that we can share in the glory of Easter. There's no Easter without Good Friday, as unpleasant as Good Friday may be, nevertheless, we have to do it. That's what He asks. Just like He did it. We do it in imitation of Him." Catholics read the Scriptures: Commentary on Benedict XVI's Verbum Domini by Bevil Bramwell OMIBenedict XVI's exhortation Verbum Domini is a concise summary of the theology of Scripture in the Catholic Church. This book is a graduate level analysis of the Catholic use of Scripture in prayer, liturgy and theology, as it is found in Benedict's exhortation. He also shows the possible uses of the modern tools of exegesis and their limitations when dealing with the Word given by God to his Church. The problem with this kind of tinkering was that one has to be expert in theological anthropology, in Christology and at least some philosophical hermeneutics. The highly developed skills that were demanded led to less able scholars treating the scriptures as a palimpsest on which they could write their own gospel so to speak. The issue of the unique nature of the sacred scriptures such that their only possibility of being understood lies in the tradition that gave them birth and that remains in union with them.Benedict XVI spotted this historical development and included a substantial theology of scripture and tradition in his presentation of the results of the Synod in 2008. As a result, in passing, he outlined a substantial educational project commensurate with the substantial reality that we call the scriptures. If it were ever to be implemented it would transform departments of scripture and the entire conception of how seminary education is carried out.Fr. Bramwell OMI teaches Systematic Theology at Catholic Distance University. He is from South Africa, did his doctorate at Boston College, and has five books to his credit including Laity: Beautiful, Good and True - Hans Urs von Balthasar's Theology of the Laity; The World of the Sacraments - The Catholic Theology of the Sacraments; John Paul II's Ex Corde Ecclesiae - The Gift of Catholic Universities to the World, and The Catholic Priesthood - A 360 Degree View. https://www.amazon.com/Catholics-read-Scriptures-Commentary-Benedict/dp/1494237687www.readersmagnet.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/frbevbramwellrm.mp3

The Early Church & Pagan Culture: Dr. Italy

This conversation was between myself and one of the most eminent scholars in the early church fathers- a man who also happens to be my father: Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio “The Greyer” as we call him. He was the valedictorian of Catholic University of America, he holds a PHD in Theology, is currently is professor at Catholic Distance University and is a renowned speaker. He runs Crossroads Initiative, which started out doing youth and young adult ministry as a rock band in the 80’s, and that is transmuted into an organization dedicated to helping the world rediscover the adventure of the Christian faith. We asked him to come onto the podcast because, one of the major conversations happening in the group and in the Church at large is centered around the question: How should we deal with secular, pagan culture? Implicit in this question is another- There is this tension between tradition and creativity- how do we value the treasures of the church that we know and love, while at the same time valuing and adapting to modern secular culture for the sake of innovation? This tension is especially present when we grapple with conversations about liturgy. For those of us that are grappling with questions of how how do we integrate cultural art with our Catholic heritage, I wanted to bring Dr. Italy onto the cast so that we could talk about how the early church approached these questions. The conversation was deeply enlightening. Crossroads Initiative Christians, The Soul of the World - Letter from Diagnetus News: As a community of creators of artists of freethinkers, we are seeing our movement grow in the church. Unity between artists and people within this grassroots coalition is happening: collaborations between members have sky rocketed in the last year. But for all of this to move to the next level, and for us to really see the New Renaissance realized, we need to connect with the Medicis of our age- the successful business owners, executives, and financiers who can invest in the ideas and projects. Finally, big news- as you know, we have pledged to pick a single project that we believe could make massive impact in culture and that could facilitate collaboration across all types of creatives within the group. So the news is that we have found that project and been working behind the scenes to get it ready for your involvement. SO. We have a huge collaboration stewing right now. We will have news for you on that in the coming weeks. But consider this the teaser. If you want an opportunity to work with amazing people, to grow in community and in your skill sets… its coming.
