Happy Thanksgiving! Today Deacon Harold talks Deacon Dominic Cerrato who Cerrato is Director of the Office of the Diaconate for the Diocese of Joliet, Editor of Our Sunday Visitor's The Deacon magazine, and Director of Diaconal Ministries. He has taught theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Duquesne University of the Holy Ghost, and Holy Apostles College and Seminary. He has over 40 years of experience in catechetical and pastoral ministry on both the diocesan and parish levels. Deacon Dominic possesses a BA in Theology from Franciscan University, a MA in Theology from Duquesne University, where he also completed his Ph.D. coursework. In 2009, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the Graduate Theological Foundation. Ordained in 1995 as the first permanent deacon of the Diocese of Steubenville at the age of 35, Deacon Dominic is a national speaker, author, and retreat master. Beyond scholarly papers and popular articles, he has published several books on diaconal theology and spirituality. He is also a novelist and recently published the historical fiction Battle in the Pacific. In 2020, he was appointed by Pope Francis to an international papal commission to study the question of women and the diaconate with Also looking into Soulful Psalm 81:10-13.

What happens in book seventeen?Telemachus returns home and presents himself to his mother (17.36). He tells of his journey to Pylos and Sparta, and how Menelaus told him that Odysseus was being held captive on the island of Calypso (17.45). The prophet, Theoclymenus, declares that Odysseus is already on Ithaca (17.168). Meanwhile, the Swineherd and Odysseus—in the guise of a beggar—start to make their way to the palace and are mocked by the goatherd, Melanthius (17.231). As they approached the palace, Odyssey sees the dog he trained as a puppy, Argo, “invested with ticks, half dead from neglect” laying on a pile of dung (17.319). Argo recognizes his master and Odysseus hides his tears (17.330). As Odysseus enters his home, “the dark shadow of death closed down on Argo's eyes” (17.359).Odysseus, as the beggar, tests the suitors by asking each one for a scrap to eat (17.398). The suitor Antinous mocks him and throws a stool at Odysseus (17.492). Odysseus is “unstaggered” by the blow, silent, “his mind churning with thoughts of bloody work” (17.513). The book ends with Penelope inviting Odysseus the beggar to come and tell her his story face to face (17.588). 87. How does the theme of guest-friendship (xenia) inform book seventeen? The predominant theme in book seventeen is that Odysseus returns home and does so as a guest in his own house. Homer is arguably drawing a parallel between Odysseus' return home and cyclops narrative. As Odysseus raided the cyclops' cave and intended to pervert guest-friendship to receive gifts, so too does he now find guests in his own home devouring his goods. Moreover, as the cyclops consumed his ill-intentioned guests, so too will Odysseus consume his. The two narratives are linked explicitly by the curse the cyclops asks of Poseidon after Odysseus escapes and reveals his name.Other aspects of xenia to observe include the prophet, Theoclymenus, making an oath according to the table of hospitality (17.169). Moreover, we see that xenia is not only something upon which an oath may be made but also a standard of judgment—as it is for the suitors and their treatment of Odysseus the beggar (17.397). We also see guest-friendship expose the irony that the suitors—who are devouring the house of their host—mock Odysseus the beggar as bleeding the house dry (17.425, 492). Notably, the suitors are aware, in part, of Antinous' violation of guest-friendship, as they condemn him hitting Odysseus the beggar with the stool (17.531).Much more in our written guide!

His research utilizes preclinical models to investigate psychopathological behavior. He has authored and co-authored papers in leading scientific journals, including his groundbreaking studies relating to abortion and abortion-pill reversal. His research efforts currently focus on investigating: 1) the neurological, biological and behavioral consequences of drug-induced abortion, 2) the abortion-pill-reversal, 3) the development of an animal model for relocating the embryo in ectopic pregnancy and 4) mental health and related behaviors in the university student population.ABSTRACTAbortion-pill reversal (APR) is the process where a woman, regretting her abortion shortly after taking mifepristone (RU486), is administered progesterone in an effort to stop and reverse the abortion process. APR is treated as medically/scientifically unsound and dangerous to women. However, what does the reality tell us? Does objective reality support the narrative fed to the public? This presentation will seek to address the objective scientific reality underlying APR, including recent findings from my laboratory. She is, at last, pursuing a second M.A. in systematic philosophy.ABSTRACTAn abortion is characterized by pro-choice advocates as a concern of personal autonomy, expressed most succinctly in Planned Parenthood v Casey (1992): “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life. Beliefs about these matters could not define the attributes of personhood were they formed under compulsion of the State.” The abortion industry naturally exploits this narrative by politicizing in the name of human rights a procedure that denies those very rights. At the heart of these politics is an anti-personhood agenda that counts on the complicity of pro-life advocates. Such a shaky moral landscape became apparent during COVID when prominent Catholic leaders were promoting, under the principle of double-effect, immorally created vaccines as morally licit. This presentation will engage the moral dimension of an issue that pervades even those areas of our lives where we least expect it to surface.

While studying moral theology at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, CT, Dr. Violette volunteered in local impoverished areas and learned firsthand how devastating mental illness can be to family life. This impassioned him to attend to the growing need for professional mental health care from a Catholic standpoint and to pursue advanced studies in clinical psychology at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences at Divine Mercy University. A Catholic scholar can more accurately assess scientific claims by reading the scientific literature him- or herself. The reports are much easier to navigate once you understand their structure. If you can read Aristotle and Aquinas, you can read modern scientific papers.

What lessons can they, in turn, teach us? Our welcome guest is Dr. Marc Tumeinski of Anna Maria College and Holy Apostles College and Seminary. His doctoral research brought together in ecumenical dialogue the writings of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI and John Howard Yoder. Among the questions we will ask are the following. 1. Architect Anthony Grumbine believes the State Street promenade needs an interim plan because we're currently allowing a "B-level," or even "C-level," which is below Santa Barbara's standards. "Shouldn't we at least have a basic, good, interim design in the meantime that is actually doable as an interim solution," Grumbine said on the latest episode of Santa Barbara Talks. "The reality is that some of those interim solutions are going to be around for 10 years probably. So why the heck are we allowing this to be a B-level city, or even a C-level city in terms of what it looks like, compared to what it could be." Grumbine said if it is going to take at least five more years before anything is actually built out on State Street, something needs to happen sooner. "We're so many years from having anything actually done," Grumbine said. "It's going to take years and years to get a plan. It's going to take years and years and years to fund and build that plan. And it's going to be done in portions." Grumbine also chairs of the Santa Barbara Historic Landmarks Commission. In this podcast, he talks about State Street, the future of De la Guerra Plaza, and the city's housing challenges. In his role as an architect and as HLC chair, Grumbine explains what he looks for in a project, and how the architecture should serve the function of the building. He talks about the principles of strength, function and beauty in architecture. "Is it not just of this immediate fad or style, but actually a quality thing that is going to be beautiful for years to come, and actually be looked at like we look at these buildings that are 50, 100 years old, and they are still beautiful," Grumbine said. "There was this ingenuity to them, but they had this classic feel like they are never going to go out of style." Grumbine also teaches architecture for Holy Apostles College & Seminary, and is an architect and principal at Harrison Design. As a means to this end the Sisters' apostolic efforts in education, counseling, health care, care of the aging and manual work are directed to increasing a sense of the full meaning of the sacramental life of the Church.” Sister Paula Jean Miller, F.S.E., is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, whose motherhouse is in Meriden, Connecticut.  Sister Paula Jean received her license and doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Lateran in Rome, through the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C., in 1993.  Her teaching of marriage and family studies, the theology of the body, moral theology, sexuality, bioethics, and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, has spanned over 30 years in five seminaries, as well as the University of St. Thomas in Houston TX, where she founded, directed, and taught in a Catholic Studies Program. Dr. Peter Martin, Psy.D., joins WCAT Radio Show Host Dr. Mary Anne Urlakis in Episode 30 of “Vows, Vocations, and Promises: Discerning the Call of Love,” to discuss his contribution in the recently published comprehensive new book: Spiritual Husbands-Spiritual Fathers: Priestly Formation for the 21st Century, edited by Bishop Felipe Estevez and Bishop Andrew Cozzens. In this episode, Dr Martin discusses his recently published chapter, “Striving for Affective Maturity and Authentic Peace of Soul: The Role of Deep Forgiveness and Secure Attachment.”Dr. Martin is a licensed psychologist, and the Internship Director of Integrated Training and Formation at Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska, an APA accredited site, where he is responsible for the psychological and faith-integrated formation of pre-doctoral psychology interns and other mental health professionals. Additionally, in 2008 Dr. Martin initiated and heads a clinical outreach site, through Catholic Social Services, at the Newman Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska where he provides therapy to university students and consultation services to priests, FOCUS missionaries, and other staff. Dr. Martin provided growth counseling services from 2012-2013 to seminarians at the Institute for Priestly Formation summer program in Omaha. Dr. Martin served on the Executive Board of the Catholic Psychotherapy Association from 2013-2016. His areas of interest include supervising therapists in faith-integrated treatments of psychological disorders, in practicing trauma-informed therapy, Forgiveness-Therapy, treating “implicit God-image Problems” and psychological obstacles to authentic spiritual encounters with God and giving and receiving love, in studying the psychology of belief and unbelief, and the social scientific understanding of religious conversion.Dr. Martin and his employer, The Immaculate Heart of Mary Counseling Center and Catholic Social Services, are in the early stages of aggregating data for psycho-spiritual assessment project to directly serve the Church hierarchy, both women and men’s religious, and to indirectly serve all the laity. Dr. Martin is also currently developing and implementing an adaptation of Witness to Love’s Marriage Preparation Mentorship Program (a virtues-focused, attachment-based model of couples’ mentorship) to support the pillar of human formation of diocesan seminarians and religious life. In this interview, Dr. Martin discusses the need to seek and foster authentic peace of soul. He outlines various impediments to authentic peace, including flawed patterns of attachment. Dr. Martin elucidates the ways in which persistently compromised internal peace and deficit attachment patterns can negatively affect priestly formation. Peter Martin and Mary Anne Urlakis explore the role of Deep Forgiveness as the therapeutic antidote for debilitating anger and resentment, specifically delineating the definition of forgiveness, its requisite characteristics, and benefits. Dr. Angelyn Spignesi Kopylec Arden joins Dr. Mary Anne Urlakis as her guest on Episode 29 of WCAT Radio’s “Vows, Vocations, and Promises: Discerning the Call of Love.” Dr. Arden earned her Ph.D. in Cognitive Scientific Psychology from the University of New Hampshire in 1977 and since 1981 has been licensed as a psychologist in Connecticut, where she practiced Depth Psychology for 25 years. Dr. Arden has long been fascinated by the study of the relationship between the human unconscious, subconscious and conscious, and the dynamics which motivate the human mind. In this episode, Dr. Arden explains the science and practice of depth psychology.In addition to her clinical work in the field of Depth Psychology, Dr. Arden is also an exemplar educator. She began teaching at the of Dallas in 1978 and has been a Professor of Humanities at Holy Apostles College and Seminary since 2006. Dr. Arden teaches courses in psychology and literature to undergraduate students as well as Human Formation to seminarians. Dr. Arden has served as the Group Facilitator of Seminarian Theological Reflection, and has published scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals, including a piece entitled, “Seminarian Human Formation and Social Justice,” in the Social Justice Review, and also “The Fides et Ratio Seminars,” published in The Bulletin of Catholic Higher Education. Dr. Arden has published ten books, including: Lyrical-Analysis: The Unconscious Through Jane Eyre (1990), The Articulate Silence of God (2002), and Clara & Marcus (2002). The last two books draw on Scripture in dealing with the Christian healing of broken souls. Much of Dr. Arden’s work focuses on the interface between Depth Psychology, Christianity, literature, and philosophy. In this interview, Dr. Arden details her vocational journey as well as highlights the value of understanding the nexus between Christianity and Depth Psychology. Her other book titles include: Orbits of Symphony (2015), Purcell Wrengt (2015), Unfolding (2015), Random as Lace (2015), as well as The Train” and “Jude’s Wife (2015).”

I Thought You'd Like to Know This, Too - Special Guest Host, Ronda Chervin, interviews Michael Horn, the Evangelization Coordinator for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, MO, and a graduate student at Holy Apostles completing his MA in Theology in spring 2018. Scheduled to air at 11:00 am Eastern on Thursday, February 1, 2018. Michael Horn was born and raised in Affton, Missouri, and grew up in St. Catherine Laboure Parish. He attended St. John Vianney High School and then Fontbonne University where he earned a B.S. in Biological and Physical Sciences. Growing up, he wanted to become a doctor but felt a call to the priesthood in the middle of his college years. After graduation from Fontbonne University in December 2011 and a free spring semester, he entered Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in the fall of 2012 where he completed a B.A. in Philosophy and studied two years of graduate theology. He left Kenrick-Glennon in the spring of 2016 after discerning to pursue a relationship and began working for the Archdiocese of St. Louis as the Evangelization Coordinator, a ministry that has been for him both a blessing and a challenge. He is currently finishing his M.A. in Theology at Holy Apostles College and Seminary and expects to graduate in May, 2018.

I Thought You'd Like to Know This, Too - Special Guest Host, Ronda Chervin, interviews Michael Horn, the Evangelization Coordinator for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, MO, and a graduate student at Holy Apostles completing his MA in Theology in spring 2018. Scheduled to air at 11:00 am Eastern on Thursday, February 1, 2018. Michael Horn was born and raised in Affton, Missouri, and grew up in St. Catherine Laboure Parish. He attended St. John Vianney High School and then Fontbonne University where he earned a B.S. in Biological and Physical Sciences. Growing up, he wanted to become a doctor but felt a call to the priesthood in the middle of his college years. After graduation from Fontbonne University in December 2011 and a free spring semester, he entered Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in the fall of 2012 where he completed a B.A. in Philosophy and studied two years of graduate theology. He left Kenrick-Glennon in the spring of 2016 after discerning to pursue a relationship and began working for the Archdiocese of St. Louis as the Evangelization Coordinator, a ministry that has been for him both a blessing and a challenge. He is currently finishing his M.A. in Theology at Holy Apostles College and Seminary and expects to graduate in May, 2018.

Who is it that we worship? Is it, as Pascal declares, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, or is it the God of the philosophers? In my presentation, I will be discussing precisely that question as it relates to the ongoing debate between classical theists, informed by Thomas Aquinas, and theistic personalists influenced by analytic philosophy. He graduated in 2014 with an MA in philosophy and plans to complete the requirements for an advanced graduate certificate in the fall of 2017. Christopher also worked in secondary education for thirteen years as a mathematics teacher, counselor, and school administrator. He presently teaches courses in ethics, philosophical anthropology, natural theology, and the history of philosophy.

Objection 2: Further, it is unfitting that elements hostile to one another should be brought under the mastership of one. But many animals are hostile to one another, as the sheep and the wolf. Therefore all animals were not brought under the mastership of man. Reply to Objection 2. In the opinion of some, those animals which now are fierce and kill others, would, in that state, have been tame, not only in regard to man, but also in regard to other animals. But this is quite unreasonable. For then ature of animals was not changed by man's sin, as if those whose nature now it is to devour the flesh of others, would then have lived on herbs, as the lion and falcon. Nor does Bede's gloss on Genesis 1:30, say that trees and herbs were given as food to all animals and birds, but to some. Thus there would have been a natural antipathy between some animals. They would not, however, on this account have been excepted from the mastership of man: as neither at present are they for that reason excepted from the mastership of God, Whose Providence has ordained all this.
