Emily Kircher-Morris welcomes Sumit and Viraj Dhanda, a father-son duo who are working to update and rethink norms around communication, intelligence, and inclusion. Viraj is a nonspeaking autistic student who was diagnosed with autism and apraxia as a young child. Viraj and his father, Sumit, talk about their journey navigating the challenges and misconceptions surrounding non-verbal communication, the impact of apraxia, and the importance of presuming competence. Viraj shares his personal experiences through a communication tool, and tells the story of when he and his father discovered his unique condition. TAKEAWAYS Many non-speakers have apraxia of speech. Potential can be missed when you fail to presume competence in non-speaking people. Typing can be a transformative communication tool for non-speakers. Misconceptions about non-verbal communication can be damaging. Advocacy and persistence can lead to breakthroughs in education. Parents should explore all communication options for their children. Non-speaking people can and do have rich, complex thoughts. Education systems should rethink expectations for non-speakers. Emerging technologies offer hope for non-speaking people. Viraj and Sumit Dhanda are a father-son duo reshaping the conversation around communication, intelligence, and inclusion. Viraj, a nonspeaking autistic student admitted to MIT's Class of 2029, was diagnosed with autism and apraxia in early childhood. Through typing, he broke through profound communication barriers and revealed extraordinary strengths in mathematics, writing, and critical thinking. His poetry and essays offer rare insight into the inner world of nonspeaking autistics and have been featured by The Boston Globe, CBS Evening News, and NPR's Here & Now. Sumit, a finance professional and former executive at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citadel Securities, and Evercore ISI, now dedicates much of his time to advocacy and storytelling alongside his son. With a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford and graduate degrees from Dartmouth and BITS Pilani, Sumit brings a unique lens to the conversation. Together, they are co-authoring a memoir that weaves their two perspectives into one powerful narrative—challenging assumptions and expanding what we understand about neurodiversity and human potential. The Tiger Moms Chat is a series of unfiltered hard-hitting (sometimes) conversations. As Searmi and Vaish wonder what it is to be a tiger mom - they think that being a tiger mom partly means pushing past comfort zones. We discuss a few controversial topics in this episode - including the Telepathy Tapes - both for and against. From Vaish: "The question is not if telepathy is real. It is - is it necessary to sensationalize an already marginalized group?" We discuss if presuming competence is the same as presuming genius and more. Please check out Episode 171 for more on Apraxia.

Do you ever feel like your child is falling behind their peers? In this episode of Non Linear Learning, we talk about the gaps that Traditional Education can create in Neurodivergent learners and 3 ways you can address that right now! I'll explain how sensory needs, Apraxia, and an under-resourced education system contribute to the illusion of "lagging behind." Plus, three actionable steps to reframe, support, and empower your child's learning journey. Tune in and let's obliterate the gap!
I first spoke with Dana Johnson nearly 4 years ago, and that conversation completely changed how I saw vision and learning. I call it my "ocular motor awakening"—when I truly understood that vision has three components, and only one of them is corrected by glasses. Dana is the co-creator of the Spellers Method and the founder of multiple centers dedicated to helping non-speaking individuals communicate and learn with purpose. As both an occupational therapist (OT) and a Spellers Method practitioner, she brings a unique approach to supporting individuals with autism, apraxia, dyspraxia, and sensory-motor differences. In this episode, we talk about the power of purposeful motor skills, breaking down barriers for non-speakers, and what real communication means. Key Takeaways: Vision isn't just about eyesight—it's about how the brain processes what we see. Apraxia is a motor planning challenge, not a cognitive one. Communication is possible when we focus on purposeful motor skills. What does right support look like? Get in Touch:
Enjoy this replay of this favorite two-part episode! In part one of my interview with Dr. Edythe Strand. A renowned speech pathologist and former professor at Mayo College, Dr. Strand has led groundbreaking research on developmental, acquired, and progressive apraxia of speech.Dr. Strand explains that apraxia is not a medical diagnosis but a label for a speech-sound disorder impacting the movements required to produce speech. Unlike other speech disorders, apraxia affects programming and planning movements, leading to awkward transitions, distorted sounds, and inconsistency. Therapy focuses on movement, not just sound production. Using Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), clinicians emphasize the physical gestures that create sounds rather than isolated phonemes.Dynamic assessments are crucial for evaluating Apraxia. Dr. Strand's own Dynamic Evaluation of Motor-Speech Skill (DEMS) provides insight into a child's preferred cueing and severity of their disorder. This method contrasts with traditional static assessments, which rely on single responses to stimuli. In part two of this interview, Dr. Strand delves deeper into DTTC, a treatment she developed for children with severe apraxia. Unlike typical therapies, DTTC involves a hierarchy of cues to teach motor speech skills. Dr. Strand highlights the importance of functional, fundamental words in therapy for children with severe Apraxia, particularly those with autism.Dr. Strand's passion for helping children communicate shines through her work, blending research and practice to improve lives. No good teacher uses one approach for every student. Therefore, I listen attentively and let you formulate your curriculum. My Specialties include trauma & PTSD, addiction, co-dependency, personality disorders, bipolar depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders & phobias.Medication should not be our first go-to solution. More natural treatments for autism and ADHD are available for us and our children that have the same significant effects, if not better, than medication.Fortunately, we're here to discuss with Ms. Jennifer Giustra-Kozek, a fellow trailblazer and author of Healing Without Hurting: Treating ADHD, Apraxia, and Autism Spectrum Disorders Naturally, about the natural solutions for autism and ADHD to restore health and create lifelong wellness. What's your background in mental health? For 20 years, Jen has been working as a licensed therapist and with psychiatrists for more than ten years. She has seen children as young as five years old suffering from depression or anxiety and already on antipsychotic medication. She has also witnessed how they would have terrible bowel issues. It triggered her to think of a better alternative. She recalled introducing to clients some natural remedies because she has a family history of eating and cooking food naturally. Her ancestors also impacted Jen's lifestyle as they all had gardens. She was raised in a household where she wasn't allowed to eat junky cereals. Instead, her mom always cooked real food. Transitioning to such a lifestyle may be more challenging for those who grew up having only processed food, but it's possible. But dark circles could mean many things, usually indicating poor health management or lifestyle. That's why we need to have minerals because if you don't have minerals, you can't detox, and you can't transport nutrients between cells. It also affects every neurotransmitter in your brain. So, you can imagine how important it is.We downplay the importance of these minerals. A lot of these minerals come from our food. But sometimes, it's epigenetic or a breakdown in our gut microbiome, causing our body not to function correctly due to the lack of nutrients. Most people don't know that pharmaceutical companies bring plants to a lab to recreate them synthetically with a whole bunch of chemicals and, later on, call it their discovery to address a symptom of a problem. People usually buy those medications instead of directly taking or using the plant, which would heal our bodies deeper without any side effects. What's the biggest game changer for Jen?When asked about the biggest game changer among the many things she's done, Jennifer considers natural and healthy dietary transition the best option. She has seen its effects on not just...
