President Donald Trump's brief mention of Iran in his State of the Union address was still short of a complete argument for how and why striking Iran, which would risk a wider Middle East conflict, would further U.S. interests. Also: today's stories, including how U.S. President Donald Trump's new retirement plan builds on a bipartisan model; what Trump's view of U.S. military power could mean for Iran-US talks; and how some prominent U.S. universities are paring back campus spending in response to endowment tax hikes. Join the Monitor's Christa Case Bryant for today's news.

As part of discussions between Belgium and US giant Lockheed Martin for a potential deal covering 11 additional F-35A fifth-generation fighter jets, Brussels is pushing hard for hefty domestic industrial returns, according to the country's defense minister.

For review:1. US President Donald Trump threatened Wednesday that time was running out for Iran, and that the next potential US attack on the Islamic Republic — if Tehran doesn't make a nuclear deal — would be far worse than the June 2025 strikes. 2. The United States announced on Tuesday that it was conducting an aerial military exercise in the Middle East amid ongoing tensions with Iran.3. Iranian officials issued stark warnings Wednesday against any US strike on the country, with a top adviser to Iran's supreme leader threatening that Tehran would attack Israel in any such event with an “unprecedented” retaliation, including “at the heart of Tel Aviv.”4. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his assertion that Israel will not allow Gaza's reconstruction before terror groups in the Strip disarm, and said Israel would maintain security control over Gaza and the West Bank, in a wide-ranging press conference on Tuesday evening.5.  Israel is preparing for talks with the Trump administration on a new 10-year security deal. In 2016, the US and Israeli governments signed a memorandum of understanding for the 10 years through September 2028.6. Territorial issues over Donetsk are the remaining item that still require a bridging of views at US-mediated talks to end Russia's war in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, describing the issue as "a very difficult one."7. Sweden has had very early discussions with France and the United Kingdom about possible nuclear weapons cooperation, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has revealed. No concrete proposals or timelines for any cooperation were outlined, and Kristersson emphasized that talks remain preliminary in early stages.

The discussion begins with reports of the European Union preparing a “trade bazooka” against the United States, explaining what this strategy means and how a trade confrontation could affect global trade flows and investor sentiment. The episode also examines whether America is moving closer to a military conflict with Iran, and what such a development could mean for oil prices, inflation, and stock markets worldwide. In addition, the conversation looks at movements in silver prices as investors seek safe-haven assets during uncertain times. By connecting geopolitics with market behavior, this video offers valuable insights to help investors understand risks and position themselves wisely in volatile conditions.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Zman Yisrael founding editor Biranit Goren and environmental reporter Sue Surkes join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Following the smothering of nationwide protests challenging Iran's theocracy, Goren discusses that US President Donald Trump appears to be backing down from his threats against Iran, possibly because the US hasn't made it a priority to topple the Iranian regime. With the technocratic board members chosen for the second phase of the Gaza plan, Trump is determined to push forward to the second phase of the ceasefire, says Goren, despite the remaining issues of disarming Hamas and returning the final hostage body of Ran Gvili. Kibbutz Be'eri is moving forward with its reconstruction, reports Surkes, with houses and several public buildings being rebuilt with primarily Tekuma Directorate funding, and expectations for residents to return in the summer. Surkes also looks at the use of so-called poultry manure as cattle feed in Israel, a practice that has been banned in many Western countries. New initiatives to support Palestinian statehood, while reflecting growing international attention, are “perpetuating the illusion” that a two-state solution can resolve the conflict with Israel, argues former US diplomat Rob Malley. Malley was a leading United States negotiator across the Middle East for decades, and was on the cusp of a new Iran-US deal in 2023 when he was suspended by then-US President Joe Biden. Malley's new book, Tomorrow is Yesterday, details the damage done by decades of US involvement in Middle East peacemaking. Malley tells host Steve Clemons that Israel can't achieve normalcy or “absolute security” while sidestepping the issue of justice for the Palestinians.

And more broadly, how have events over the last two weeks  changed the entire security dynamic of the Middle East? I'm privileged to bring you a conversation with one of the foremost experts on these questions. Dalia Dassa Kaye is a senior fellow at the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations and author of the forthcoming book Enduring Hostility: The Making of America's Iran Policy, which will be published in December. We kick off by discussing the events of the last few days before having a deeper conversation about Israel's strategic calculus moving forward, Iran's options for retaliating against the United States, and whether the American bombing of Iran may have traded short-term gains for a long-term disaster. https://www.globaldispatches.org/40PercentOff Or, support the show at full price:  https://www.globaldispatches.org/

Daily News Brief by TRT World

"Israeli strikes have killed nearly 600 in Iran — US-based group " "Israeli strikes have killed at least 585 people across Iran and wounded 1,326 others, a human rights group has claimed. The Washington-based group has claimed to have identified 239 of the dead as civilians and 126 as security personnel. Iran's last update, issued on Monday however puts the death toll at 224 people killed and 1,277 others wounded. " Won't kill Iran's supreme leader — at least 'for now': Trump "US President Donald Trump has dramatically stepped up his rhetoric against Iran's supreme leader, saying on social media that the United States knows where Ali Khamenei is located but will not kill him ""for now."" In another post, Trump also appeared to demand Iran's ""unconditional surrender!"" as he fueled questions about whether the United States would join Israel's attacks on Tehran's leadership and nuclear facilities. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that they know exactly where Supreme Leader is hiding, and that he is an easy target, but is safe there, but they are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now." "Israel kills dozens of Palestinians, wounds hundreds in food line " "Israel has killed over 30 desperate Palestinians seeking aid in northwest of Gaza City. Israeli occupation soldiers fired at the desperate crowds of Palestinians seeking aid yesterday as they gathered at an aid distribution point to the northwest of the city, Earlier, Israeli forces had fired at Palestinians seeking food aid in the cities of Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern Gaza with tank shells, machine guns and drones, killing more than 60 civilians and wounding approximately 200 others. " China: Trump 'adding fuel to fire' in Iran-Israel conflict "China has decried US President Donald Trump's call to Iranians to evacuate the capital Tehran as ""adding fuel to the fire"" amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said adding fuel to the fire, making threats, and exerting pressure will not help ease the situation, it will only intensify contradictions and widen the conflict." Türkiye Parliament condemns Israel's genocide in Gaza and attacks on Iran "Türkiye's Parliament has unanimously adopted a motion condemning Israel's ongoing genocide on Gaza, its broader regional actions, and ongoing attacks targeting Iran. In a statement, published in the Official Gazette, the lawmakers said the Israeli regime has committed ""crimes against humanity"" through decades of occupation, systemic violence, and recent bombardments that killed thousands in Gaza. They also denounced Israeli attacks on Iran, describing them as ""provocative and threatening"" and warning they risk dragging the region into wider war."
