So… what is your favorite moment in the whole wide world of Christmas movies? Is it when Buddy screams out “SANTA!!!!” in the middle of the department store from the movie Elf? Maybe it's the moment when Kevin McCallister breaks the fourth wall and says directly into the camera: “This is it. Don't get scared now,” in the 90's classic Home Alone. Or maybe you are more in favor of young Tiny Tim when he exclaims “God bless us, everyone!” from A Christmas Carol. If you're anything like me, it's probably any one of the several wild and unrepeatable phrases from the lips of Clark W. Griswold in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Whatever it is, there always seems to be one moment in any great story that sticks with you for good. It's a moment that you know is coming, but every time it does, you love it again and again each year you watch it. Join us as we explore some of the most memorable and enduring parts of the true Christmas story and we ask – how can this moment hit us in a fresh way this year?

Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The scene where the cat bit the Christmas lights cord and got electrocuted was nearly cut from the movie. Prior to the first test screening, the studio executives wanted the scene taken out, fearing that it might offend some viewers, but producer Matty Simmons begged them to leave the scene in, and they eventually gave in to his request. After the first test screening, the test audience scored the cat electrocution scene as their number one favorite scene throughout the entire movie. When Clark Griswold takes out his frustration over his 25,000 Christmas lights malfunctioning on a plastic front-yard diorama of Santa and his reindeer, you'll notice he begins to punch the decorations before pausing and resorting to kicking them instead. That is because, as the cast members featured on the commentary track reveal, Chevy Chase actually broke his pinky when he punched the reindeer but managed to stay in character, resulting in the take you see in the theatrical cut. He's Chevy Chase, and we're not. We mostly know him as "Clark W. Griswold" from the Vacation series and as the king of awkward, sarcastic humor. An early SNL cast favorite, there is no one that does banter like Chevy. Join in as Matt and Ryan discuss two of Chevy's films - one popular at the time ...but not so much today, and the other a 1980's comedy classic.
From his Saturday Night Live pratfalls to his iconic roles like ace journalist FLETCH and the VACATION series' hapless dad Clark W. Griswold (opposite fellow WTF inductee Randy Quaid), Chevy Chase was once considered one of the funniest men in America. But over the years, his bad behind-the-scenes behavior and poor treatment of talent brought his star status down to the ground. And let's not forgot the misbegotten Chevy Chase Show (not even Disney's Man of the House - a hit - could make that stink go away) Pile into the family truckster and find out “WTF Happened to Chevy Chase!”
One of my favorite movies when I was in high school was Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray as Phil Connors and Andy MacDowell as Rita Hanson. I liked it because it was hilarious. How could you not like a movie with Bill Murray who still makes me laugh from "Caddyshack" and "What About Bob?" I grew up in Pennsylvania as well, so Groundhog Day was a thing that we actually celebrated every February 2nd. Let me elaborate on the plot. A Pittsburgh weatherman, Phil Connors was assigned to go to Punxsutawney on February 1st. He has this assignment every year and he lothed going. The small town hicks as he called them drove him crazy. He was too big for this town and he made his contempt known. Phil was a total jerk and made every effort to get through the day of February 2nd, 1993. He scarred everybody in his path. When he finally laid in bed, he was so thankful that the assignment was over. Phil then awoke to the Sunny and Cher hit, "I've Got You Babe". Was it Deja Vue all over again as Yogi Berra once said? Yes it was. Phil experienced February 2nd all over again and everything was exactly the same as yesterday. It was the worst nightmare in Phil's life, but it was really happening. This character is the total opposite of the last "Don't Be Like" episode. In "Don't Be Like Clark W. Griswold". Clark was a total optimist. He never saw the potential for bad, only the potential for good. There wasn't a shred of realism in him. Phil Connors is a total pessimist. He sees only the bad in the forsaken town he was stuck in and none of the good that was all around him. As Phil wakes up day after day, you can see the transition. First, Phil realizes what is going on. He is stuck in Punxsutawney on February 2nd, 1993. This caused severe depression and in the first several days, he just tried to end his life. He was successful each time, except that he woke up to the same Sunny and Cher "I've Got You Babe" song again. He had hit rock bottom and many times people with serious mental problems need to get there before they can start climbing out. Do you know anyone in your life that hit rock bottom and did a total 180? It happens all the time. And it happened to Phil Connors. Along the way, he found the futility of trying to kill himself. He had to accept his fate. He was in Punxsutawney hell. That's where Rita enters in. He thought his producer was attractive, but didn't really care for her. He stopped trying to kill himself and made it his aim to impress Rita.Phil had every part of February 2nd timed to the second. He could save the cat as it fell from the tree. He studied Rita and learned about her as much as he could. Then on a new day, he would wow her with his understanding of her. This started to win her affection. Over time, Phil's heart changed like the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. He turned into a man of extraordinary skill and compassion. Some calculate (the movie doesn't say) that Phil Connors endured 12,403 Groundhog Days or 33 years and 358 days. It took that long for Phil to change before he experienced February 3rd! It's a crazy story line, but makes for a fun movie. Phil changed from the cold-hearted, pessimistic man to a warm-hearted, optimistic one in a mere 33 years. In the end, he wins the girl and sees the beauty in the small town that he hated before. Do you see the lesson here?Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website
I could talk about Clark W. Griswold for hours. He is one of the best characters in American cinema, hands down! Clark is a man with a big heart. He loves his family. He desires to create memories that will last a lifetime. He is a dreamer and has HUGE ideas. Everything I've just said describes me to a tee and I wonder who else it relates to. But I need to pop the balloon now. In part 1 of my Don't Be Like Series, we examined Owl from Winnie the Pooh. Owl is a highly intelligent creature with a desire to own the room. He wants everyone to hear how smart he is. Owl does not know how to read the room. He will tell you all about him on the side of the river as Pooh and Piglet are heading toward the waterfall cliff. Don't be like Owl. Clark W. Griswold has a glaring blind spot too.Ellen says this early in Christmas Vacation. "I think you're forgetting how difficult it's gonna be having everyone in the house at the same time." Clark responds "They're family. Christmas is about resolving differences and seeing through the petty problems of family life.... All my life, I've wanted to have a big family Christmas (he grew up an only child)." Ellen responds. "It's just that I know how you build things up in your mind Sparky. You set standards that no family event could ever live up to." Clark... "When have I ever done that?" Ellen goes on to name every event over the past few years. This is the perfect lead in to this episode. Clark only sees the best case and everyone else sees the reality. In the first movie, Clark had a big dream to take his family cross country to see all of the sights and go to Wally World. He was overly optimistic and had no idea of the potential downside and issues that would happen. His wife knew the potential and reality but was afraid to talk to Clark about it. She just went along. As every disaster happened, she was prepared to deal as she always did. Every time something got in the way of Clark's perfect vision, Clark would simmer and his internal pressure cooker would rise. Ellen would go with the flow as she knew the reality of what Clark was doing and expected something like this could happen. Again, Clark internalizes everything. He was in shock and felt like it was all going wrong. We laugh at his responses because it's a movie and Chevy Chase is a comedian. They never talked reality and Clark kept pushing toward a pie in the sky optimistic idea that would never really happen. It comes to a head when they arrive and the park is closed. Do you remember the Wally World scene where Clark blows a gasket, punches the moose nose, and proceeds to hold the security guard (and legendary comedian John Candy) prisoner with an air rifle. They ride on every ride and eventually get arrested. The owner of Wally World relents because he feels bad for Clark and the family. Christmas Vacation ends in similar fashion. Clark blows a gasket when he doesn't get his big Christmas bonus. He planned everything in advance. The family swimming pool. Crazy Eddie kidnaps Clark's boss and again Clark gets off. Ellen has a way of smoothing over the situation every time. Clark never learns though. It makes his character one of my favorites. I truly relate to him. Real life is the craziness, not the optimistic, never-go-wrong illusionary world of Clark W. Griswold.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website
I've had this podcast series idea for quite some time and finally decided it was time to share it. I am an avid reader and movie watcher. Plus, I'm a dad of 5 and have read and watched nearly everything out there. Combine this with my appetite for observation. I notice things in books and movies that make me think. I connect invented characters to real-life lessons. This podcast series will consist of a number of Don't Be Likes. This first one is Don't Be Like Owl. I'll do others on Don't Be Like Clark W. Griswold, or Phil Connors, or a Lemming. It's going to be a lot of fun for me to share these characters with you.You all know Owl. He's the wise, old tree-dweller in Disney's Winnie the Pooh. Owl is far too wise and smart for his own good. He is self-absorbed and loves to hear himself orate long stories. He has no idea what is going on around him when he is speaking. He has no idea if anyone is even listening. He just loves to weave his tales, no matter how boring or unrelated. In fact, his stories often go on massive rabbit trails as he describes some distant family member... and so on. Do you know anyone like this? There are two stories in Winnie the Pooh that I think epitomize Owl's inability to read the room. It's Owl's MASSIVE blind spot! In the first one, there is a gust of wind that steals poor Piglet away. Pooh is able to keep a hold of him like he's flying a kite. Piglet flies through the Hundred-Acre Wood until he smacks into Owl's window. It's obvious that Piglet is in trouble and Pooh is yelling for Owl to help. All he has to do is open the window to let Piglet in. Instead, Owl thinks of a time when the wind was also very strong. He starts a long oration about a distant family member... Piglet floats on and the scene continues as Owl is still talking with enthusiasm to no one and thoroughly enjoying it. Here's another one. Pooh's head is stuck in a honey pot, upside-down, and raging in the flood waters toward the waterfall. Piglet is also at the mercy of the flood, stuck on a chair, and heading toward the waterfall. Enter Owl. He sees his friends and doesn't even notice the danger they are in. He takes the opportunity to start another oration, completely in "Owl-land". All Owl had to do was fly over to them and help them out or extend a long branch and pull them back into safety. But that's not what Owl does. He is triggered by their appearance and loses all sense of reality. Owl is still talking as Pooh and Piglet careen over the waterfall's edge. Thankfully, they are okay or it would have been a terrible children's story. Again, I ask you. Do you know anyone like this?I have encountered so many people over the years that will talk your ear off with absolutely no regard for social queues or the ability to read the room around them. They are so self-absorbed, whether intentional or not, that they push people away. No one in their right mind wants to be around someone like this. Do you agree? There's an old saying. "Do you know that Ugly attacks 1 out of 3. Yeah, look to your right and left. If you don't see it, it's you!" I ask you this. If you don't know anyone like Owl and have no idea what I'm talking about, it's possible that YOU are Owl. Is your business stunted for growth. You cannot outgrow your level of leadership. Maybe you're the problem?! I urge everyone listening to this podcast to check themselves. Don't be like Owl!Do you like this series? I hope so because I have more to share in the coming months. If you have ideas of characters you'd like me to analyze, please email me - ken@smartcleaningschool.com.

In July of 1983, director Harold Ramis took us on a cross-country comedic adventure with one of the most well-known, and often most beloved families in pop culture today - The Griswolds. The Griswold’s first cinematic adventure takes us from Chicago to California as the good-hearted, but dimwitted patriarch, Clark W. Griswold, attempts to drive his family to “Wally World” for a good, old fashioned family Vacation. On this episode, Tim Williams and guest co-host, Chris McMichen, share their memories of this 80's classic, tell a few of their own family vacation stories, and give some behind the scenes trivia along the way. He hosted Weekend Update and then got into movies from Foul Play to Caddyshack to Fletch, and of course the series of National Lampoon's Vacation movies. Ahead of his coming to Milwaukee for a screening of Christmas Vacation where he'll do Q&A, I got to talk with Chevy Chase about falls with President Ford, working with the cast of Caddyshack characters, what Jimmy Stewart said to him when he introduced himself (it was brief), observations on making the Vacation movies, and just what the heck the "W" in Clark W. Griswold stands for. It all starts with me interrupting his breakfast at home. Listen here!

Steve wants to become sort of Jewish and pretend the day begins at sundown instead of sunrise. Our success in these endeavors is yet to be determined. Which brings us to this episode. We wondered, "What will be be like one year from now? Will we be spiritually, emotionally and physically healthy? Will we still be doing youth ministry? In unserer allseits beliebten (?) I love the Christmas season! One of the things that I think I love most about this time of year is those Christmas movies. My favorite Christmas movie---judge me if you must---is "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." One of my favorite scenes in the entire movie is where Clark W. Griswold has worked for days putting up lights on his house, and he's finally got them working. [The camera] pans to the scene where Cousin Eddy is unexpectedly there. He's got his RV and he's staying for an indeterminate amount of time. One of the things I love about this movie is it points out some of the comedy, and in a very funny way, the pain of family. We all probably have someone in our family like Cousin Eddy, where we wonder, "Are they coming this year?" If you don't have a Cousin Eddy....you might BE Cousin Eddy! The longer I've pastored, the longer I've worked with people, the longer I've counseled people, I've come to find out that Christmas, and the holiday season in general, is sort of a double-edged sword. As Dickens writes: It's the best of times and the worst of times. For some people, there's joy and elation....oh my goodness, Christmas is coming and it's marked on the calendar. For others, oh my goodness, Christmas is coming and it's marked on the calendar.....and it's sort of in 'red,' do you know what I mean? If we went around the room and shared, and if people were bold enough to say, "Hey, this is why Christmas is hard for me," a lot of what we would see if we drilled down deep enough, is a lot of the pain and a lot of the questions and a lot of the angst around the holiday season in general, has to do with family, doesn't it? For some, maybe there's a fracture in the family, so when people show up, it just reminds you that things aren't what you wish they were or what you think they should be. For some of us, we have a very empty seat at the dinner table for Christmas dinner, don't we? Some of you are coming up on that for the very first Christmas and you don't know what it's going to do to you? For some, it's just man, family's coming! It raises the level of anxiety because it's sort of a wildcard. It might be amazing, it might be great, and it might hit the fan! Who knows?...
We’re sledding back to 1989 to rap about ginormous Christmas trees, attack squirrels, flying sheets of ice, non-nutritive cereal varnish, and the jelly of the month club. Clark W. Griswold, Jr. will show you where to put a tree that big in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! Grab your moose mug and scoop up some eggnog because we’re getting ready to empty the shitter, dream about a new swimming pool, and get down with the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nut house!
We discuss Rudolph, Frosty, Ralphie, Clark W. Griswold, and John McClane ... Egg nog ... tinsel ... and all of that Merry Shtuff. Also, Jesse's Fruitcake recipe.
It is no surprise that "Christmas Vacation" starring Chevy Chase is one of the most popular Christmas movies to watch during the holiday season. Clark W. Griswold and his family never fail to deliver in giving us the wonderful gift of laughter.
