He also wrote a relatively small amount of science fiction. Best known as the writer of Psycho (1959), the basis for the film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock, Bloch wrote hundreds of short stories and over 30 novels. He was a protégé of H. P. Lovecraft, who was the first to seriously encourage his talentMindwebs was a 1970's series out of WHA Radio in Wisconsin that featured weekly semi-dramatized readings of science fiction short stories performed by Michael Hansen. It aired stories by some of the genre's best writers like Robert Bloch, Arthur C. Clarke, Gordon R. Dickson, and Ray Bradbury. Many of the readings were enhanced by music, periodic sound cues, and the occasional character voice, however they are not completely dramatized.Relevant Links:"The Man Who Collected Poe" by Robert Bloch on Rish Outcast (Patreon)Theme music: Liberator by Man In SpaceTo comment on this or any episode:Send comments and/or recordings to journeyintopodcat@gmail.comPost a comment on Facebook here, or on X here
We continue the laughs this week in our #HAHAugust episode. Polish your jokes and put on your suspenders as you take the mic at 1983's THE FUNNY FARM! Written and directed by Ron Clark in his debut after working with Mel Brooks on the scripts for HIGH ANXIETY and THE SILENT MOVIE, this stars Peter Aykroyd, Howie Mandel, and even more Canadian comics. The film follows a budding comedian (Miles Chapin) and a group of ambitious young comics as they strive to make it in the LA comedy scene, but only one can find a steady girlfriend and a club to work in after only one night in town (also Chapin). In this episode we are joined by special return guest Ali Davis, who you may remember from our previous episodes COVER GIRL MODELS, and GODZILLA 1985. Laugh with us as we learn about improv for dogs, debate if strip clubs have bathrooms, and reminisce about each of our cross-country drives.
Madolyn Smith Osborne had the kind of fairy tale show business beginning that most can only fantasize about. While still in school at The University of Southern California, she won her first paycheck with a serendipitous audition before famed choreographer, Gower Champion, when a lead dancer and understudy had to be replaced in the Broadway-bound production of Pal Joey starring Lena Horne. Madolyn's passion for musical theater as well as her training with beloved choreographers Bill and Jacqui Landrum, prepared her well for the opportunity. A year later, on the eve of graduating from USC's School of Dramatic Arts., her mentor, the late, iconic theatre and film producer and Academy Award-winning actor, John Houseman, launched a swan song of sorts for her with a production of Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well, in which Madolyn starred in the role of Helena. Mr. Houseman had invited various industry professionals to see the show in the 99-seat Stop Gap Theater on campus, including his former protege, film director, Jim Bridges, who, upon seeing Madolyn's performance, invited her to play the role of John Travolta's mistress, Pam, in the cult classic, Urban Cowboy. Madolyn went on to give multiple award-winning performances in the L.A. theater scene. Among her triumphs, she created the title role of Emily in Stephen Metcalfe's play of the same name, which was directed by the renowned producer-director, Jack O'Brien, during its premiere at San Diego's revered Old Globe Theatre. When Madolyn was studying with legendary actress, Kim Stanley, and opera singer, Gloria Lane, she became a founding member of L.A. Theatre Works. Madolyn also enjoyed a terrific TV and film career in which she found herself starring in features opposite the likes of no less than Steve Martin in All of Me, Roy Scheider in 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Chevy Chase in Funny Farm, Joe Pesci in The Super, and in TV shows like Due South, Cheers, If Tomorrow Comes, and Sadat. But at the height of her powers, all of that was abruptly interrupted by a chronic illness that she fights to this day.Madolyn resides in Toronto, Canada with her husband, former NHL hockey great, Mark Osborne, and 2 adult daughters who live nearby. For the record, Madolyn and I have known one another for more years than either of us will admit, having met and worked together on a few productions while we were both in drama school at the USC.

This week, in Townshend, Vermont, what appears to be a nice story, of a couple, living a nice life, turns very dark when it's least expected. This leaves one member of this couple brutally beaten to death, in the driveway, after the other spouse had been carrying on a weird affair with a neighbor. This story includes guard llamas, Grandma & Grandpa friends with benefits, and the murderer telling everyone they know that they committed this murder. But will this unlikely killer be held responsible?Along the way, we find out that Vermont can turn anybody into the movie "Funny Farm", that old people apparently get very horny, and that just because you hide the murder weapon, doesn't mean you're innocent!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! What's it like to live with nearly a dozen dogs, 200 cats and an 800-pound rescue pig named Wilbur? Glad you asked.
To Kevin's abject horror, Chris wrests control of the wheel and sets course for Funny Farm. The 1988 comedy—characterized as a "small miracle" by Roger Ebert, and directed by George Roy Hill (The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Slap Shot)—is now, according to a citation-free claim on Wikipedia, considered one of Chevy Chase's best films. Is that true? And, if so, would that definitionally mean it has to be good? Let's all find out, together.

"Nobody enjoyed having pie in the sky turn into pie in the face." Keenly aware of the 1988 Chevy Chase vehicle Funny Farm (the last movie directed by George Roy Hill), hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs only recently discovered its source novel written by sports columnist and humorist Jay Cronley. In this episode, they travel into rural life along with city slickers Andy and Elizabeth Farmer, who've just bought a seemingly idyllic country home complete with a pond with two ducks, a drunken mailman who hurls letters from his truck as he roars past, and a dead body buried in the garden. The Farmers soon discover that Redbud, Oklahoma, the would-be Acorn Capital of the World, is pretty much hell on earth and do what they can to suffer through their new existence in an episodic narrative that's incredibly funny and often surprising. The hosts delight in this world Cronley created and probably quote more lines than any other book-themed episode. New Bakersfield College Rodeo Team Formed You'd think as big as an agricultural, beef-producing county as Kern is, there would be rodeos all the time. And, in reality, there are. We've got the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo Association producing bull riding, youth, and PRCA rodeos. There's the Glenville Rodeo and the Sheriff's Posse Rodeo. We have a Bakersfield Youth Rodeo Club. But, with all that, there was no community college rodeo. That is until adjunct professor, Andrea Prise, formed the Bakersfield college Rodeo Team. If you've listened much to the podcast, you already know I am one of the least knowledgeable people when it comes to rodeo. But, I wanted to learn more, and I've attended many classes at Bakersfield College over the years (a story for another time). I tracked down Andrea and the Bakersfield College Rodeo Team President, Chloe Griffiths for a chat. We met in a study room at BC and had a great time talking rodeo. Andrea and Chloe told me that support for the rodeo team was impressive. She's getting help from a local stock contractor, Tinoco Bulls, and the Funny Farm. She's also gotten a good response outside the ag industry with a local plumbing contractor, HPS Plumbing, providing the team with jackets to make them feel like real professionals. Andrea talked about how valuable it can be for youth riders to compete at the college level. Not only can they hone their skills and get valuable experience, but they get an education too. Chloe is a perfect example. She was going to move away to find a college to rodeo at until she learned about the Bakersfield College Rodeo Team. WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS WEEK?Leah talks about how hard it is to be an adult and ways she can tell she's no longer a kid. She talks about how overwhelming it can be to be responsible for raising a kid in today's day and age and she explores what she hopes to teach her son about the world around us. Leah shares a Facebook post that she wrote in September 2015 when she and her son, Isaac (age 2 at the time), went to the playground for the evening, and it didn't go as planned. At end the episode, Leah offers a reminder to parents for when things get stressful.WHAT QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED IN THIS EPISODE?There are 4 things that Leah talks about where can tell she's actually an adult - do you agree with these her? Do you do these things and, if you do, do you feel like more of an adult because you do? How does Laurie describe the Funny Farm?If Leah was a Texas Hold'em hand indicating her level of motherhood instincts, what numbers would she be? At the end of the episode, Leah mentions there are 4 takeaways from this episode - which is your favorite?
