Taylor is a New York Times best-selling author, teacher, and Episcopal priest. After serving three congregations—two in downtown Atlanta and one in rural Clarkesville, Georgia—she became the first Butman Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Piedmont College, where she taught until 2017. Since then, she has spoken at events with wonderful names like Wild Goose, Evolving Faith, Awakening Soul, and Gladdening Light, but her favorite gig is being the full-time caretaker of a farm in the foothills of the Appalachians with her husband Ed and very many animals. Her new book, Coming Down to Earth, from Convergent Books, will be out in 2026. Chu serves as an editor-at-large at Travel+Leisure, teacher in residence at Crosspointe Church in North Carolina, and parish associate for storytelling and witness at the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley in California. He is the author of Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America and Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand. He is also the co-author, with the late Rachel Held Evans, of the New York Times bestseller Wholehearted Faith. Chu is a former Time staff writer and Fast Company editor whose work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and Modern Farmer. In his weekly newsletter, “Notes of a Make-Believe Farmer,” Chu writes about spirituality, gardening, food, travel, and culture. An ordained minister in the Reformed Church in America, he lives with his husband, Tristan, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The February-March 1977 issue of the UFO Newsclipping Service, has four articles describing what would become “classic” UFO cases. One looks into the report (page 12 of the pdf) of nine-year-old Jose Cantu who said he saw “two greenish creatures about three feet tall, who rotated on a base instead of having feet, and two ‘steely' crafts in which 2 other creatures were sitting.” His drawing showing one of the creatures with only one eye has caused them to be dubbed “The Cycloptic Aliens of Harrah.” The other three articles describe two abduction cases that have become well-known, one involving Judy Kendall covered in two papers from California, and one involving three women: Elaine Thomas, Louise Smith, and Mona Stafford covered in a paper from their home state, Kentucky. By this time, abduction claims and creature reports had come out from under the umbrella of contactee reports and the stigma that came with this association thanks to cases such as the 1973 Pascagoula Incident and the 1975 Travis Walton Incident, and news agencies were more open to reporting on them. That being said, there is an obscure case reported (page 3) in the February 2, 1977, Clarkesville, Tennessee, Leaf Chronicle, that has aspects of a contactee case, and the story told by the man who said he had an encounter with otherworldly beings is strange to the point of being ridiculous. Even so, the reporter who covered it wrote about it with a good deal of objectivity and restraint.Read more →Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.

Today has become a testing time and a time of self-evaluation. This is also a time to recognize that we are a journey, not a destination. This is a time to elevate voices of hope and reimagine what is essential. This is a time to remember who we are today; what we can do comes with a price. And we must remember those who paid for it when we could not or did not ask. Sometimes we need help remembering that their struggle was real. "Until today, you may have misunderstood death. You may have been grieving or mourning the loss of a loved one, believing they were forever gone from your life. Today, be a living reflection of the dreams and love you shared with someone who has passed on. “People never really die. They leave their bodies. They end their physical existence to continue their spiritual journey in another form, on another plane. A person who has entered the realm of reality that we call death is never beyond your love. Death is not a cold, dark, or frightening experience. It is an essential part of life that teaches us to believe in what we cannot see. Once you have loved someone, your love will keep them alive". --Author Iyanla Vanzant. This week we will visit a place where life is resuscitated through memory. We will meet members of the Board of the Mt. Olive Cemetery Historical Preservation Society, whose mission it is to emphasize the influence and contribution of African American regarding the history, education, development, growth, and culture of the Clarkesville, Tennessee area. During my first conversation with board members, I was impressed that their volunteer commitment was born from a servant's heart. They recognize and honor those who do not have a voice to remind us that their struggle was real. Be inspired!

"I like it much better than ‘religious' or ‘spiritual' — to be a seeker after the sacred or the holy, which ends up for me being the really real."– Rev. Barbara Brown TaylorFrom Krista, about this week's show:It's fascinating to trace the arc of spiritual searching and religious belonging in my lifetime. The Episcopal priest and public theologian Barbara Brown Taylor was one of the people I started learning about when I left diplomacy to study theology in the early 1990s. At that time, she was leading a small church in Georgia. And she preached the most extraordinary sermons, and turned them into books read far and wide. Then in 2006, she wrote Leaving Church — about her decision to leave her life of congregational ministry, finding other ways to stay, as she's written, "alive and alert to the holy communion of the human condition, which takes place on more altars than anyone can count.” She's written other books since, with titles like An Altar in the World, Learning to Walk in the Dark, and Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others. Being in the presence of Barbara Brown Taylor's wonderfully wise and meandering mind and spirit, after all these years of knowing her voice in the world, is a true joy. I might even use a religious word — it feels like a "blessing." And this is not a conversation about the decline of church or about more and more people being "spiritual but not religious." We both agree that this often-repeated phrase is not an adequate way of seeing the human hunger for holiness. This is as alive as it has ever been in our time — even if it is shape-shifting in ways my Southern Baptist and Barbara's Catholic and Methodist forebears could never have imagined.Barbara Brown Taylor is the author of many books, including An Altar in the World,  Leaving Church, Holy Envy, and Learning to Walk in the Dark. Her 2020 book is Always a Guest, a compilation of recent sermons. She is the former rector of Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church of Clarkesville, Georgia, and she taught for two decades in the religion department at Piedmont College. This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode "Barbara Brown Taylor — ‘This Hunger for Holiness'." "I like it much better than ‘religious' or ‘spiritual' — to be a seeker after the sacred or the holy, which ends up for me being the really real."– Rev. Jessica Mathisen hails from Marietta, Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 2010 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation, she moved to Chihuahua, Mexico, where she taught elementary grades at a mission school. Upon returning to Athens, she taught for another four years in the public school system and at Downtown Academy. Jessica and Rory met on eHarmony in 2014, and unbeknownst to them, they both attended Watkinsville First Baptist Church, where she is now the Executive Administrative Assistant. They were married in 2015, and you can find them in Athens, Georgia, hanging out with friends, eating yummy food, or reading on the couch with their dog, Bailey. In this episode, Jessica reminds us we don't have to be perfect to pursue our dream. In fact, our desire for perfection can often stand in the way of our dream. She encourages us that our dream is really God's dream, and it's meant for His glory and the good of others. You're going to love her story about being bold with her former boss to go after a need she knew she could fill. (Don't we all need a little more boldness as we walk towards our dreams?)
