William Mulmer was born in 1832. For historical context, the oldest known Daguerrotype is from 1837, so Mulmer was born right around the same time as photography, and he loved the new medium, but started off as a hobbyist. Mulmer worked as a jewelry engraver, but in his spare time, he liked taking photographs of his family and friends. In 1860 though, he took a selfie that would change the course of his life. In his self portrait, he noticed something strange. There appeared to be a ghost behind him. It just so happened that his wife was a healing medium who would help people make contact with the spirits of dead loved ones. The spiritualist movement was quite popular in the late 19th century and William Mulmer had found a way to use the latest scientific technology to photograph spirits providing dramatic and compelling images as evidence to validate the seances. With the advent of photography in the 19th century came the inevitable inclusion of the new process in the spiritualist movement. William Mumler gained fame in the 1860s when he developed a photo that showed the ghostly image of his deceased cousin. He then went to to great fame taking photos of people with their ghostly loved ones appearing in the frame. While he was accused of fraud, he was never convicted and mediums and others still claim to be able to take spiritual photographs today.

(Kristin) The 19th-century was on the cutting edge of some new technology and a new religious movement, and they intersected in some interesting – and surprising – ways. Find out how spirit photography became A Thing and how William Mumler “captured” the ghost of Abraham Lincoln in this week's episode of Footnoting History.
Spirit photography refers to the practice of capturing images that are believed to depict ghosts, spirits, or other supernatural entities. It gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the rise of spiritualism, a movement centered around communicating with the spirits of the deceased. Here are some key points about spirit photography:Origins: Spirit photography emerged during the mid-19th century, with practitioners claiming to capture images of deceased loved ones or spiritual beings using photographic technology. It was seen as a means to provide evidence of an afterlife and communicate with the spirit world.Techniques: Spirit photographers used various techniques to create their images. Some claimed to capture spirits directly on photographic plates or film, while others utilized double exposure, superimposition, or manipulation of the negatives or prints. Critics argue that many spirit photographs were produced through trickery and manipulation rather than genuine supernatural phenomena.Famous Practitioners: One of the most well-known spirit photographers was William H. Mumler, who gained popularity in the 1860s. He claimed to capture spirits alongside living individuals in his photographs. However, Mumler was later exposed as a fraud, and many of his images were revealed to be the result of double exposure techniques.Controversy and Skepticism: Spirit photography has long been met with skepticism and controversy. Many argued that the images were the product of intentional deception or the result of photographic flaws, such as accidental double exposures or light leaks. Critics also questioned the scientific validity of spirit photography and considered it a pseudoscience.Decline and Modern Perspectives: As advancements in photography and the understanding of optics increased, the credibility and popularity of spirit photography declined. Today, spirit photography is generally viewed as a historical curiosity or a subject of interest within the context of spiritualism and the history of photography. While spirit photography has a rich history and cultural significance, it is important to approach such images with a critical mindset. The paranormal claims associated with spirit photography have been widely discredited, and many instances of spirit photographs have been debunked as hoaxes or the result of photographic manipulation techniques.

Spirit photography is the act of taking pictures, and having spirits / ghosts appear in your images. One man claimed that he could do this without fail, and produced many pictures of people posing for a picture and having a deceased loved one in the picture. This worked out great for him until one day, he took a picture of a local doctor, when he reviewed the picture he noticed the gentlemen who was supposed to be a ghost in the picture. That person was very much alive. Even P. T. Barnum got involved proving the pictures to be fraudulent. The man was even tried for fraud, but was acquitted of the charges. Listen and decide if he was a fraud or real.Thoughtography is the ability to use one's mind to imprint images onto photographic paper. A man from Chicago created thousands of these images in the course of three years. All of these images were created under the careful eye of witnesses trying to debunk him, and a research doctor conducting the experiments. The one big catch was the man had to be intoxicated to produce the images. Can this be real? You be the judge.Thank you for listening to the Paranormal Peeps Podcast. Many out there have claimed to have captured photographs of spirits. Believe it or not, spirit photography has been around as long as photography itself. In fact, during the Victorian era, photographs of spirits were not only oddly common, but for some years it was quite the craze. While there were many photographers during this time producing such photos, it all began with one man in particular, and this is his story.
Hey there friends and weirdos! This week, we investigate the haunted history of the infamous Raynham Hall in England! How did this mansion of British highfalutin politicians and their intermingling families create a volatile location for ghosts and spirits? Is this era of ghost stories the result of the rise of Gothic literature, or is the Brown Lady ghost really the result of painful, lost love? We discuss all this and much more!

While Mulmer created his spirit photographs using double exposure, basically he would put a plate of the “ghost” in front of the sensitive photographic plate while he took the spirit photo, double exposure is not the only trick people can use to capture a ghost on film. A famous ghost image was created in 1891 without a double exposure. In the image we see a seemingly empty room with a faint image of a ghostly man on a chair. We barely see the man as really only his head and arm are visible. He seems to be fading from the image and just a part of the ghostly body hangs in the air. The photo was taken in the library of Combermere Abbey shortly after Lord Combermere died in a riding accident. He was being buried at the time the photo was taken leading many to the seemingly obvious conclusion that the man in the picture was the ghost of Lord Combermere. In reality, it was a quirk of a long exposure photograph. Who ARTed is an Airwave Media Podcast. Part 2 of the mystery of William H. Mumler. Guest Timothy Donahue, filmmaker and tall former co-host of the deep cable show "Auto/Biography", strangely stuck around for the conclusion. Tim wears his skeptic hat as Michael introduces him to the story of William H. Mumler, the father of spirit photography and a likely conman. It was in New York City in 1869 when William Mumler was accused of fraud. Mumler was a medium who would take portraits of people, and on their photographs would magically appear ghosts. The practice became known as Spirit Photography. While we might look at Mumler's photographs with a modern eye and clearly see double exposure as a method to create the spirits, no one could figure out how Mumler was pulling off his deceit. Mumler's case is connected directly to our cultural beliefs and distrust of the media today. And, we still don't know how he did it. Thank you for listening! This week I had an amazing conversation with artist, Adie Russell. We discussed her incredible new "Lacuna" series of charcoal works on cotton rag paper (based on old Victorian glass negative studio portraits that are put through an obscure Photoshop filter) and also, her newest video work, "Hydriogenesis," which was born of a craving for a feeling of safety in nature and from the long periods of introspection we all experienced during the pandemic. We also talked about the trickiness of navigating Instagram in an authentic way, what can be used as a sourdough starter for abstraction, Adie's "Covers" video project and Marlon Brando's idea about how everyone is ALWAYS acting, AND of course, the Caterpillar Pillar. (Please check out Episode 30 to learn all about said Pillar where I do a deep dive into Adie's recommended artist-pick-me-up book from the 70's: Hope for the Flowers.) Today we're talking about spiritualism. Wait, what? Spiritualism deals with seances and trying to contact spirits after death. There was a lot of fraud and some debunking, and Houdini even promised he'd escape death if it was possible. We're back! This week, in honor of Adam starting his own photography business & pursuing his artistic passions we are going to talk about Spirit Photography. Wikipedia gives us a little background & describes spirit photography this way. Spirit photography (also called ghost photography) is a type of photography whose primary goal is to capture images of ghosts and other spiritual entities, especially in ghost hunting. It dates back to the late 19th century. The end of the American Civil War and the mid-19th Century Spiritualism movement contributed greatly to the popularity of spirit photography. Photographers such as William Mumler and William Hope ran thriving businesses taking photos of people with their supposed dead relatives. Both were shown to be frauds, but "true believers' ', such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, refused to accept the evidence as proof of a hoax. As cameras became available to the general public, ghost photographs became common due to natural camera artifacts such as flash reflecting off dust particles, a camera strap or hair close to the lens, lens flare, pareidolia, or in modern times, deceptions using smartphone applications that add ghost images to existing photographs.
We are finishing out spooky season with a very special show! Why is it that human beings are so obsessed with photographing the paranormal? In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, I speak with monster expert, Dr. Emily Zarka from the PBS show Monstrum about all sorts of monsters and why they can or can't be photographed (according to legend). From ghost hunts to Bigfoot to vampires that don't show up on film, we talk about why, even in stories, it is so difficult to get photographic evidence of monsters! About My Guest “I'm Emily Zarka. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy in English from Arizona State University, specializing in British Romantic literature with an emphasis on the Gothic. I approach literature and film through monsters, applying the theory that human history is monster history. I am the writer and host for “Monstrum,” an online series with PBS's Storied channel on YouTube that looks at complex histories and motivations behind some of the world's most famous monsters. I also wrote and hosted a one-hour documentary for PBS called Exhumed: A History of Zombies.“ You can also follow the good doctor on Twitter. Are You Entertained? Do You Enjoy the Podcast?
