It's hard to believe, but it's already time to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in a new year. Before we do, however, we'd like to take the next half an hour to review some of our favourite interviews of this year. It's become a tradition at rabble radio, after all! Let's dive right in. 2024 at a glance… In January, then-Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow Madison Edward-Wright sat down with associate professor at Concordia University Ted Rutland to talk about his research work on anti-Black racism and policing in Canada – and specifically, in Montreal. In this clip, Rutland will take us through a brief history of policing in Quebec and give us a temperature check of the situation today. At the end of her term as Jack Layton Journalism for Change fellow in 2023, Kiah Lucero covered the Kearl mine tailings leak, and how the Alberta Energy Regulator and Imperial Oil both failed to report those leaks for a disastrous nine-month period. Brandi Morin, an award-winning Cree/Iroquois/French journalist, released Killer Water, a documentary which shines a light on the environmental impacts of Alberta's oil sands industry. Morin shares with Lucero the grave ways the community of Fort Chipewyan has been impacted by the Kearl mine tailings spill. May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, and this year we were very excited to share with our listeners a two-part discussion on the history of Asian labour in Canada. Kiah Lucero sat down with Patricia Chong and Karine Ng from the Ontario and BC branches of the Asian Canadian Labour Alliance. In this clip, we'll hear them dive into the concept of a “model minority” and how all racial justice fights are intertwined. This year, a major win for the pro-choice movement – and indeed a win for women's health across Canada – came in the form of an announcement by the Liberal federal government that crisis pregnancy centers and charities must now clearly reveal to their clients whether they offer abortion or abortion referrals. This new policy will prevent anti-choice pregnancy crisis centers from misleading women to try to deter them from having an abortion. In the months leading up to this policy being announced, Joyce Arthur, the founder and executive director of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, joined rabble editor Nick Seebruch to talk about belief-based denial of care and the state of abortion rights in Canada. And finally, listeners, the last clip we wanted to highlight today came from a conversation between Nick Seebruch and Louise Smith from Independent Jewish Voices Canada. Solidarity with Palestine was a huge topic of conversation this year on the podcast and on rabble.ca, and in this interview Smith and Seebruch outline the important work Independent Jewish Voices Canada does to advocate for peace and justice in Israel-Palestine and explain how all forms of oppression are connected. In this clip, Smith aims to dispel the myth that solidarity with Palestine equals antisemitism and criticizes the Jewish groups in Canada which tout that sentiment. Did we miss a favourite interview of yours from 2024? Let us know on social media or by leaving a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube! Thank you for listening to rabble radio! Monday, October 7, 2024 marked the one year anniversary of the deadly Hamas-led attacks in Israel-Palestine, which was followed by Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Over the past year, activist organizations, groups and citizens worldwide have done their part to call for an end to this genocide. One such organization is Independent Jewish Voices (IJV). Today, Louise Smith from IJV sits down with rabble editor Nick Seebruch to talk about the work IJV does to promote peace in the Middle East, how solidarity with Palestine does not equal antisemitism, and how all forms of oppression are connected. “There are a lot of really strong voices in the Jewish community that are invested in confusing people about anti-semitism and anti-zionism. And the Israel Lobby and funders of the Israeli state, they really want people to be so afraid of being accused of anti-semitism that they stop protesting any of the humanitarian violations committed by the state of Israel. And we really need to make a distinction between people who are critical of Jews for being Jewish or Jewish conspiracy theories that are focused on Jewish people or perceived Jewish traits and separate that from legitimate criticism of state decisions. It is very normal for people to criticize state actions, state policies; and that shouldn't be any different for the state of Israel.” – Louise Smith About our guest and Independent Jewish Voices Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) is a grassroots organization grounded in Jewish tradition that opposes all forms of racism and advocates for justice and peace for all in Israel-Palestine. IJV has active chapters in cities and on university campuses across Canada. Learn more about IJV here. Louise Smith grew up in and lives in Toronto, on Dish with One Spoon territory. She is proudly Jewish and organizes in solidarity with Palestinians as part of Independent Jewish Voices and the Jews Say No to Genocide coalition. Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with painter Amrita Singhal, known for her vibrant oil paintings and the Rama Prayer mural in Berkeley. Amrita discusses her background, growing up in a culturally rich city in India, and how her former career as a tax lawyer enriched her artistic practice. After leaving law due to health issues, Amrita pursued painting, finding her voice in oil paints. Her work often explores themes of spirituality, with influences from Giotto and Matisse, and she creates immersive virtual reality experiences based on spiritual practices. Amrita also shares her inspirations and favorite places in the Bay Area. About Artist Amrita Singal:Amrita Singhal is based in Berkeley, California. She had the good fortune to study drawing and art history with the brilliant and reclusive painter Louise Smith who was a contemporary of the Bay Area Abstract Expressionists (Diebenkorn, Park, Bischoff et al.) and a one time student of Hans Hoffman, Erle Loran and Margaret Peterson O'Hagan. Two of Amrita's paintings are in the permanent collection of the UC Berkeley Art Museum (BAM). She has painted a Berkeley Public Works Art mural for Meyer Sound and regularly exhibits her work in solo and juried group shows. Amrita is currently producing one of her painting series in virtual reality and as an immersive exhibit.Visit Amrita's Website: AmritaSinghal.comFollow on Instagram: @AmritaSinghalStudioCLICK HERE to check out the Rama Mural in Berkeley. --About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. Story One: In January 1976, three Kentucky women - Louise Smith, Mona Stafford and Elaine Thomas - were driving home after having a late dinner in Stanford, Kentucky. Suddenly, just outside of town, a strange UFO swooped down in front of and then behind their moving car, causing the vehicle to move at 85 miles per hour. The next thing the ladies knew was they were eight miles away from where they just had been, and they experienced about 80 minutes-worth of missing time. During subsequent hypnosis sessions, the three women remembered what had occurred during that unaccounted for 80 minutes - they were subjected to terrifying examinations by weird, alien creatures. Story Two: On Valentine's Day 1967 in Tuscumbia, Missouri, 64-year-old farmer Claude Edwards discovered a large mushroom-shaped craft had landed on his property. Even stranger, the craft was surrounded by green, penguin-shaped alien beings. The February-March 1977 issue of the UFO Newsclipping Service, has four articles describing what would become “classic” UFO cases. One looks into the report (page 12 of the pdf) of nine-year-old Jose Cantu who said he saw “two greenish creatures about three feet tall, who rotated on a base instead of having feet, and two ‘steely' crafts in which 2 other creatures were sitting.” His drawing showing one of the creatures with only one eye has caused them to be dubbed “The Cycloptic Aliens of Harrah.” The other three articles describe two abduction cases that have become well-known, one involving Judy Kendall covered in two papers from California, and one involving three women: Elaine Thomas, Louise Smith, and Mona Stafford covered in a paper from their home state, Kentucky. By this time, abduction claims and creature reports had come out from under the umbrella of contactee reports and the stigma that came with this association thanks to cases such as the 1973 Pascagoula Incident and the 1975 Travis Walton Incident, and news agencies were more open to reporting on them. That being said, there is an obscure case reported (page 3) in the February 2, 1977, Clarkesville, Tennessee, Leaf Chronicle, that has aspects of a contactee case, and the story told by the man who said he had an encounter with otherworldly beings is strange to the point of being ridiculous. Even so, the reporter who covered it wrote about it with a good deal of objectivity and restraint.Read more →Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.

Why be boring when you can live your life being free? I absolutely love this question, this statement, and I first read it on the Instagram page for author Hannah Louise Smith. Hannah is joining me on the show today to talk about her books from The Mythics and Mortal trilogy, and we talk about writing, the creative process, and how to avoid being scammed in the self-publishing industry. This is an important call out. Self-publishing is not a new concept, but every day it seems that, more and more offers are popping up with the intent to take advantage of self-published creatives. Hannah is sharing one of her own experiences on the show today, and it is a great reminder to make sure you are doing research before signing up with any specific service. If it doesn't feel right, if something feels "off" about the claims they make, it could potentially be a scam. I know as an author, it can be easy to get excited and want to share the work out there. Remember, though, it is okay to ask questions. It is okay to tell them you will get back to them, and it is okay to need a minute before you make a decision. If 2022 was the year of talking about menopause could 2023 be the year of looking at life beyond it? Joining Krupa to discuss the positive side of life after menopause is Caryn Franklin, fashion and identity commentator. Her latest audio book is SKEWED: Decoding Media Bias, which explores why women and girls are educated to fear ageing. And Supriya Nagarajan who made a life-changing decision during the menopause to focus on her first love - performing the traditional music of her south Asian roots. According to the National Police Chiefs Council, nearly 5,000 cases of needle and drink spiking were recorded by forces across England and Wales between September 2021 and August 2022. There were more than 2500 cases of spiking by needle, with women accounting for three quarters of the victims. However, only three per cent of blood samples sent for analysis were found to “contain a controlled drug that supports a spiking incident”, so potential victims of spiking are being urged to report to the police and get tested quickly - as some substances can leave the body within 12 hours. Krupa is joined by Deputy Chief Constable Maggie Blyth, the National Police Chiefs Council lead on violence against women and girls. A new film and exhibition called Turning the Tide looks at the role of women in the renewable energy sector through movement and dance. The short film features women in graceful action at landmarks such as the Humber Bridge, and at an offshore wind turbine blade factory in Hull. Created in partnership with the Women's Movement 100 project which is celebrating the 100 years of female suffrage, it's the brainchild of choreographer Freddie Garland, who has done similar projects recognising women in industry in Sheffield and Newcastle. She speaks to Krupa along with Louise Smith, one of the dancers in the film and director of the University of Hull's Aura Innovation Centre. A new historical drama begins this evening on BBC Two, about the ill-fated French queen Marie Antoinette. The award-winning French costume designer Madeline Fontaine is the woman who was tasked with recreating the sumptuous and extravagant outfits that are paraded around Versailles on the show. She joins Krupa. Is it OK to be jealous of your friends? With the festive period in full swing, it can be a time of feeling envious of people gathering and having a good time on social media – but how do we tame the green-eyed monster that can surface when we see that our friends are happy and doing well? Krupa is joined by female friendship coach Danielle Bayard Jackson and journalist and author Claire Cohen to discuss.

Jordan-Louise Smith is currently a finalist for the Miss Universe Great Britain 2022 competition, with hopes of winning the crown in a couple of weeks (9th July) and being able to represent her nation on what she considers to be the most prestigious pageant stage in the world. Jordan grew up in a coastal town in Cumbria (England) before moving to become the first person in her family to go to university, where she obtained a first-class honours degree in accounting and finance at a top 10 university. Since 2020, she has lived in Edinburgh working in financial services at one of the world's largest professional services firms, where she is also currently training to become a chartered accountant. Outside her job, Jordan uses her accounting knowledge to provide advice to female entrepreneurs and small businesses as a way to support women in business, and also feeding her love for sustainable shopping. A few years ago, Jordan was diagnosed with a rare eating disorder called ARFID after a lifelong struggle with food. Following this diagnosis, she realised that the years of torment endured were due to a lack of knowledge and understanding, so she made it her mission to raise awareness about the different types of eating disorders, and to educate about the associated effects and stigmas. Because of her experience, Jordan set up @ed.ucate, which is an online platform to educate through posts and live videos that enable other people to share their experiences with eating disorders. She has recently featured in the national press and visited Scottish Parliament to speak with members about the key issues faced by those with eating disorders, and how parliament can help. She is also an ambassador for Beat, the UK's eating disorder charity, as well as being a regular volunteer for SHOUT, a mental health crisis line, which enables her to help those currently struggling in a more direct and personal manner. ---⠀ ⠀ Be more than just a queen. In May 2020, the English city of Havant was under COVID-19 lockdown, and 16-year-old Louise Smith had just moved into a 1-bedroom flat shared by her aunt and uncle. The past few years had been hard for Louise, with her parents divorce, a sexual-assault, and teenage hormones. As mentioned last week, in part three of this four-part series, investigators from the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization, the Mutual UFO Network, and the Center for UFO Studies travelled to Liberty, Kentucky, to interview three women there who'd reported an unusual UFO encounter. According to the women, Louise Smith, Mona Stafford, and Elaine Thomas, they suffered physical effects after the encounter including one-inch-by-three-inch rectangular burn-like marks on the backs of their necks, a burning sensation on certain areas of skin when in contact with water, and red irritated eyes. They also seemed to have lost around 80 minutes. This was on January 6, 1976, so it was an early abduction case before the narrative of a “typical” abduction by beings that came to be known as “greys” became prominent.Jim and Coral Lorenzen of APRO were told about the case by APRO Field Investigator Bill Terry. He told them that abduction might have been involved, and they arranged for APRO Psychiatric Consultant Dr. Leo Sprinkle to travel to liberty and interview the women at APRO's expense. He was a specialist in hypnotic regression and APRO was hoping that the women would agree to undergo the procedure.Read more →
In last week's blog, we looked at a UFO encounter in Kentucky reported by three women, Louise Smith, Mona Stafford, and Elaine Thomas. According to them, they saw a craft that shone a blue light into their car and seemingly took control of it. They felt pain down through the tops of their heads and in their eyes, felt the car being pulled backwards and then suddenly found themselves almost eight miles away in what seemed like an instant. The UFO was gone. They continued on to Liberty, Kentucky and stopped at the trailer home of Smith, who had been the driver. They became aware that they all had a number of physical ailments, including burning and tearing eyes, skin that burned when in contact with water and one-inch-by-three-inch marks on the backs of their necks. There was also about 80 minutes they couldn't account for. Smith looked to see if any of her neighbors were awake and she saw a light on in the trailer next-door belonging to Lowell Lee. The women went over to his house and Lee listened to their story. He looked at the marks on their necks, and then had them go to separate areas and draw what they said they saw. The drawings were almost identical. The story found its way into the press and it wasn't long before interested UFO investigators approached the women to look into the case. Read more →
In our last blog, we looked at a case involving three women in Kentucky who experienced actinic conjunctivitis after a UFO encounter. Since the blog was about multiple UFO-related conjunctivitis cases, we focused on that aspect of the encounter, but there was more to their story – a lot more.According to the October 1976 APRO Bulletin (date from February 12, 1976 Kentucky Casey County Press) on January 6, 1976, Louise Smith, Mona Stafford, and Elaine Thomas were all sitting in the front seat of Smith's 1967 Chevy, which she had bought the day before. Smith was driving and they were on their way back to Liberty, Kentucky, where they all lived, after having had dinner at the Redwoods restaurant 29 miles away, five miles north of Stanford, Kentucky. They had gone there to celebrate Stafford's birthday (they reportedly didn't drink any alcohol) and left at 11:15 p.m.They were about one mile south of Stanford when they spotted a large metallic disc-shaped object with a glowing white dome. There were “three or four” lights on the underside that were red and yellow, and “a bluish beam of light issued from the bottom.” The object descended from their right to left and then hovered at tree level over the road in front of them. At this point, they were able to estimate its size. Smith said it was “as big as a football field,” and Stafford said it was about the size of two houses. It gently rocked back and forth for a couple of seconds and then moved off to their left.Read more →

Lockdown in the UK during May 2020. Not a good time for teenagers or the young. Imagine being a sixteen year old teenager having fallen out with her mother, suffering from anxiety and self harm, with a difficult background staying in a one bedroom flat with your auntie and uncle who do not approve of your life style. Add into this mix a 30 year old male (Uncle Shane) who acts inappropriately and claims he has forgotten what he has done from one day to the next.It is difficult to argue against a mother's claim of 'pure evil' when describing the actions of Shane Mays. Shane Mays IQ was defined as 'feeble-minded', some testing (Levine & Marks) defined him as a moron. Shane Mays defence team seemed to want to use this as an excuse for his behaviour. It was the wrong time at the wrong place for Louise Smith as she was experiencing her difficult teenage years.
Shane Mays, 30, is on trial for the brutal killing of his niece Louise Smith, after she denied his advances. While Mr Mays denies that he actually killed the 16 year old girl, he did plead guilty for manslaughter. Keith Ashley, the owner of Nine Band Brewery, and North Texas Money Management has been arrested for killing his friend Jim Seegan, and making his death look like a suicide in order to take control of the man's finances. He went as far as to alter a life insurance policy payout for $2 million away from Seegan's wife. 23-year-old Celeste Manno was found dead in her home this week. She was allegedly murdered by a 35-year-old coworker who reportedly refused her advances. Her family believes that the man was stalking Celeste Manno before breaking in to her home and killing her. He then fled the scene, and later turned himself into the police for his crime. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/milkcartonmysteries/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/milkcartonmysteries/support
