Before Bryan Turner was the president and CEO of the Preservation Society of Charleston, he worked for many years for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Send us a textEpisode 43 takes us to the beautiful Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture to speak with guest, Lauren Scharf. Lauren and her husband live in a 117 year old ‘kominka' (farmhouse / folkhouse), a home they have restored themselves and as such, they are part of an enthusiastic community of ‘minka' owners across Japan. In support of that community, Lauren is also on the board of the Minka Preservation Society, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of Japan's wonderful heritage and historic homes, backed by a passionate community of like-minded owners. Extending 100km into the Sea of Japan, Noto Peninsula is known for its rugged coastline, overall beauty, traditional craft, abundant seafood and slower pace of life. In the first part of the interview, Lauren and I discuss life on Noto Peninsula, how she and her husband came to acquire their home and the renovations they have done. Conversation then moves onto the Minka Preservation Society before discussing the major earthquake that struck Noto on New Years Day 2024, and the ongoing impact of that event. If this episode is of interest to you, you might also like to listen to earlier episodes including 2, 22 and 31 in which I also spoke with kominka owners about their experience purchasing, renovating and living in their homes. For more information about the Minka Preservation Society, visit their website and you can also find them on Instagram and Facebook. You can also follow Lauren through her personal Instagram.Outland Japan is a bi-weekly podcast hosted by Peter Carnell - a freelance tour guide based in northern Nagano – that transports you to rural, regional and the wilds of Japan in pursuit of stories that lie outside the neon hum of Tokyo and golden trimmings of Kyoto. Fairness has played a pivotal role throughout history, with the pursuit of equality and justice helping to shape the world that we live in today. Fairness also plays out in our everyday lives and in the lives of children as they grapple with real-life moments that feel “unfair.” "Fairness" in the context of social and emotional development refers to a child's growing ability to treat others equitably and considering the needs and perspectives of others. The idea of “fairness” pops up in things like taking turns, sharing, and making decisions. In this episode, three 6-8 year old children, Bodhi, Aubrey, and Will, visit with LKBH host Todd Loyd to talk about fairness. They then travel to the Land of Qook-a-lackas to help two Qook-a-lacka friends — Principal Quella and Korrik, the President of the Qook-a-berry Preservation Society — to restore fairness to the Land through a process of “qook-a-lation.” The kids listen to both sides of a conflict, ask questions, and then suggest fair solutions. Our guest stars on this episode are Vella Lovell, who plays the role of Principal Quella and Meredith Holzman, who plays the role of the President of the Qook-a-berry Preservation Society, Korrik. Sound design and mixing is by Ryan Marth, and the ukulele music you hear is by actor and composer Bill English. Please learn more about the episode online at playsparkler.org.

Hello dear listeners and a very happy spooky season to all of you! This week, I bring you my customary interview for the end of season 10. I'm joined by Nathan R. Originally formed in 1972, The Goon Show Preservation Society (GSPS) has for over fifty years championed all things Goon and achieved remarkable success in keeping the show fresh and relevant into the 21st century. One of its patrons recently got fitted for a crown so it can count among its supporters folk from the highest echelons of society right the way down to poor wretches kipping in dustbins! Over the course of Goon Pod we have played host to a number of former and current members of the GSPS, many of whom were or are active participants in society events and meetings, but this week's guest is undoubtedly one of the society's most significant figures: Chris Smith. Chris, among other things, found time to put together the quarterly GSPS newsletter, overseeing its transition from rather rudimentary, stapled together A4 sheets to a much more professional A5 booklet form. He was a key co-organiser of major GSPS events down the years (including the Fred weekends) and was fortunate enough to spend time with the three surviving Goons on a number of occasions. Chris joined the GSPS soon after its formation, while still in short trousers, and there could be nobody better to help navigate through the society's history - its highlights and (sometimes) lowlights, from the earliest days corresponding with founder Mike Coveney and putting on regional shows with the legendary Steam Count, right up to the present day (with a few gaps here and there). The GSPS would have been nothing without the enthusiasm and support of its members and has done more than most to keep the Goon Show alive, and by extension reminding us, especially in the crazy times we live in now, of mankind's capacity for idiocy. goonshow.org @TheGSPS
Today has become a testing time and a time of self-evaluation. This is also a time to recognize that we are a journey, not a destination. This is a time to elevate voices of hope and reimagine what is essential. This is a time to remember who we are today; what we can do comes with a price. And we must remember those who paid for it when we could not or did not ask. Sometimes we need help remembering that their struggle was real. "Until today, you may have misunderstood death. You may have been grieving or mourning the loss of a loved one, believing they were forever gone from your life. Today, be a living reflection of the dreams and love you shared with someone who has passed on. “People never really die. They leave their bodies. They end their physical existence to continue their spiritual journey in another form, on another plane. A person who has entered the realm of reality that we call death is never beyond your love. Death is not a cold, dark, or frightening experience. It is an essential part of life that teaches us to believe in what we cannot see. Once you have loved someone, your love will keep them alive". --Author Iyanla Vanzant. This week we will visit a place where life is resuscitated through memory. We will meet members of the Board of the Mt. Olive Cemetery Historical Preservation Society, whose mission it is to emphasize the influence and contribution of African American regarding the history, education, development, growth, and culture of the Clarkesville, Tennessee area. During my first conversation with board members, I was impressed that their volunteer commitment was born from a servant's heart. They recognize and honor those who do not have a voice to remind us that their struggle was real. Be inspired!

In our new episode we are covering the Game Preservation Society. It is a non-profit organization actively preserving Japanese retro games from the 70's and 80's as cultural assets. The members are describing their project as follows: "We see games as an important asset and work to preserve it for future generations. Our members, although having various fields of expertise, overcome differences and share our knowledge to work towards the same goal. The preservation of video games carries many difficulties: scattering, neglect, obsolescence, vast amounts of data to handle... all making it an impossible task to take on as an individual. We strive to pass on to the world the knowledge that we gather. We need more people to help us, regardless of who you are. In return, we promise to do whatever it takes to preserve this important culture." Enjoy! Interview starts at minute 12:56

That's right folks, a real life Brigadier General took time out of his day to give me a call. We're also going to talk Halloween, sword & sorcery, and cyberpunk with our buddy, Jason. This one's a real banger!
It’s a discussion of gigantic proportions as we’re joined once again by Sir Aaron Carter, host and co-creator of the Before You Log Off podcast, to talk about The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi; “a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set on an alternate Earth [about an] ‘animal rights organization’ that is way more than it appears.” Listen in as we debate whether or not we’d try the book’s “poopfruit”, Laura and Jason scold Aaron for having never watched the first Pacific Rim film, and we get fired up over how Amazon mishandled their promotion of the TV adaptation of Paper Girls. St. Anselm's church was deconsecrated — or secularized — last week and the chair of its preservation society wants to see it returned to the community that built it. The original wooden church was built in the 1700s.
Today we’re here with Ulysses Dietz, Chief Curator Emeritus and Curator of Decorative Arts at The Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey. One could call The Kaiju Preservation Society (Tor Books, 2022) a pandemic novel because a) John Scalzi wrote it during the pandemic and b) the pandemic serendipitously leads the main character, Jamie, to a new job that sets the action in motion. But the book is not about the pandemic. It's about Kaiju, Godzilla-like monsters who live in an alternate Earth. This alternate Earth is rich in radioactive elements, and the Kaiju produce energy from their own internal biological reactors. This makes them a danger when, say, they end their lives with in nuclear explosion that thins the walls between Earths, but it also makes them an object of fascination for unscrupulous humans seeking new sources of cheap energy. “So much of the way plant life and animal life on Earth works is through sunlight, which is just another type of radiation,” Scalzi says. “Plants photosynthesize, animals eat plants, other animals eat the animals that eat the plants and so on and so forth. But sooner or later it all comes back to sunlight. The only places where you don't have that happen are in very specific places where, for example, there are sulfurous heat sources at the bottom of the ocean. And then things have evolved to take advantage of the energy source there. Well, in this alternate Earth, things like uranium and thorium in the crust are another possible energy source. It makes sense to me that life would evolve to take advantage either wholly or in part of that additional energy source. And then, of course, I just built out from there.” Scalzi has contributed in myriad ways to the art of science fiction through many novels, his past leadership as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and the platform he provides other writers on The Big Idea, a feature that appears regularly on his website. His writing has earned numerous awards, including what was once upon a time known as the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, the Hugo Award for Best Novel, Hugos for Fan Writer and Best Related Book, and the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. In 1857, a lighthouse was built at the tip of Lloyd's Neck at the entrance to Lloyd Harbor, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Lloyd Harbor often served as a place of refuge for ships escaping rough conditions on Long Island Sound. The first structure, known as Lloyd Harbor Lighthouse, was considered inadequate. A new lighthouse to serve mariners entering Lloyd Harbor and adjoining Huntington Harbor was established in 1912. Built of reinforced concrete, the Beaux Arts style of the Huntington Harbor Lighthouse makes it look like a small castle. Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, New York. USLHS photo. After automation the structure fell into disrepair. As a result of a 1983 survey, the light was deemed unsafe for the Coast Guard personnel who serviced it, and it was considered too expensive to repair. The Coast Guard considered demolishing the lighthouse and erecting a steel tower in its place. In 1985, a group called Save Huntington's Lighthouse was formed to save the structure. Now known as the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, the group continues to enlist volunteers and raise funds for ongoing preservation work. It was discovered in 2008 that the foundation of the lighthouse was badly deteriorated, and a major restoration has been completed in recent years. Early 1900s postcard of Lloyd Harbor Light Station.
