I'm so glad you found me at Two Bridges. I grew up in the St. Louis Metro area but on the Illinois side. When I married and moved to Missouri with my husband, the bridge between our states seemed like a great divide. I felt equal parts excitement about what my future might hold and grief about what I was leaving behind. When we moved to St. Charles, it was yet another bridge for me to get back home. I've done a lot of work to integrate who I have always been with what life has taught me—making me who I am today.I know that I wouldn't be complete without embracing my past, and I need that part of my life to launch me into my future. My way of doing therapy is to focus on your story. Your identity is not locked into where you came from; it is also who you are becoming. In that quest there is joy and sorrow. Pain and beauty. Hurt and healing. Maybe some of those hurts require “two bridges” to restore.I would be honored to walk with you through your past—the triumph and the regret—to help you realize a peaceful present and anticipate a hopeful future.I currently live in St. Charles, MO, with my husband of 24 years, 3 teenagers, and a sweet dog named Blu. I find my “happy place” in a good cup of coffee, walks in nature, and belly laughs with friends and family. I value my faith as part of my wellbeing and am open to exploring yours with you as well.I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your story. And if you truly believe in ghosts, then these stories should especially disturb you as they take place in actual locations throughout the city -- from the Lower East Side to the Bronx. By Davy Crockett You can read, listen, or watch Dan Brannen (1953-) of Morristown, New Jersey, has made a lifetime contribution to ultrarunning and the running sport in general. His dedicated work, mostly from behind the scenes, helped to establish world and national ultrarunning championships. His efforts have affected thousands of ultrarunners in America and around the globe for decades. Dan was inducted into the American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame in 2022. Early Running Brannen's senior picture The Brannen family were Irish Catholics from Upper Darby, a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Catholic schools growing up, including St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia. In high school, he was required to participate in an athletic extracurricular activity. Dan explained, “I was a shrimpy little kid. I played little league baseball, but I wasn't particularly athletic or coordinated. One of the sophomores who came in to give the orientation, said, ‘If you can't do anything else, go out for cross-country.' So, I did, my freshman year even though I was terrible at it.” St. Joe's Prep Cross Country Team During Dan's senior year, a new coach, Larry Simmons (1942-2004), a successful distance runner and racewalker took over the team. He lit a fire into the team and into Dan whose course times dramatically improved, resulting in his promotion to the varsity team. His rapid success, instilled by the inspiration of Simmons, turned him into a runner for life. The cross country team at Bucknell Dan went to Bucknell University in Central Pennsylvania and got in on the ground floor of a new cross-country team. His coach, Art Gulden (1942-2001) developed the team into a highly successful running program at Bucknell. Dan continued to improve under his tutelage and recalled, “Each year Gulden was able to recruit faster and faster high school runners. They included state champions, and it was very competitive. I was able to stay with the second tier of those guys. One of the best feelings I had about myself as an improving runner was when I was running and keeping up with state high school champions.” Brannen as a coach Dan ran a few marathons during college, graduated in 1975, and joined the well-established road-racing scene in the Philadelphia and New Jersey area. He was a self-described “running bum,” living a subsistence lifestyle as he concentrated on his running passion. His weekly mileage would average about 100-120 miles per week. Boston in 1979 His personal best marathon occurred at the 1979 Boston Marathon which he ran in 2:31:13. He was intoxicated with distance running and it would later evolve into a true career for life. Part-time he worked editing research manuscripts which enhanced his writing skills. He also coached cross country at his former high school for a few of these years in the late 1970s. Dan was a member of the Haverford Athletic Club. Road running was very competitive in the Philadelphia area during the late 1970s. He became acquainted with the future ultrarunning legends in the area. “One of the prime organizers in the area was Browning Ross who was a great Villanova runner and Olympian. Browning founded the Road Runners Club of America and started the Long Distance Log which was the very first running magazine. I would go over to South Jersey and met Ed Dodd, Tom Osler, and Neil Weygandt in those races.” Dan ventured into the shorter ultrarunning races in 1978, running the Knickerbocker 60 km in Central Park, and ran in a few others the next year, including the classic ultra, Two Bridges 36-mile Road Race in Scotland. Win at 1980 JFK 50 In 1980, Dan ran a 50-mile race for the first time at JFK 50 in Maryland.  To convince himself that he could do well, he ran two sub-3-hour marathons on back-to-back days leading up to the race, a 2:58 at Kane, Pennsylvania, and 2:57 at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He also did a 60-mile training run,

[EPISODE] A Tale of Two Bridges Join me as we travel across the East River on two of New York's famous bridges: the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge. My guests will be Joyce Gold, founder of a Joyce Gold History Tours, and Justin Rivers, Chief Experience Officer and lead tour guide of Untapped Cities. Segment 1 Jeff welcomes his first and returning guest, Joyce Gold as they begin to talk about tonight’s topic: bridges in the big city. Specifically, talking about the Brooklyn Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge. Joyce mentions how the Brooklyn Bridge was not always called that. Joyce talks about not just the bridges but the ferries that first went from Brooklyn to Manhattan. She continues about how the Brooklyn Bridge came to be and the man who wanted to build it. Joyce talks about the trials and tribulations of that came with the actual building of the bridge Segment 2 Joyce talks about the Roebling and how they were in charge of creating the Brooklyn Bridge. She mentions how the family actually invented a type of steel wire that was incredibly strong, John Roebling’s family wanted the bridge to connect the past and future. Joyce talks about how the city of Brooklyn paid for the construction. Joyce talks about how people got around in Manhattan versus Brooklyn and mentioned that most in Brooklyn would use the trolleys. Joyce also talks about how the creation of the bridge actually changed the neighborhood and where people moved. Segment 3 Jeff brings on his next guest, Justin Rivers. Justin talks about his background, growing up in New Jersey and starting tours in New York City. One of Justin’s first tours was actually about Penn Station. Jeff and Justin talk about the origins of the Queensboro Bridge, and why they first created in it the first place. Justin talks about how Queens was very underdeveloped, and how the bridge got more people to move there. Segment 4 Justin talks about the Queensboro and compares it to the Tappen Zee bridge and how they were both revolutionary. Jeff asks about the engineering challenges of a double decker bridge. Justin talks about the shift of labor unions and how they were main way things were getting built. Justin also mentions an almost, bombing of the bridge while it was getting built. He moves on to talk about the original names of the bridge. Justin talks about different stories the bridge has had in the past, and what it means to New York.

The Meigs Elevated Railway—one of the world’s first monorail systems—looked like something out of a Jules Verne novel. But it was very real. In this week’s episode, hear how nineteenth-century Bostonians missed their chance to build a steam punk utopia. The monorail system was the brainchild of Joe Meigs, a Civil War veteran and tinkerer who had political and financial backing from Massachusetts governor Benjamin Butler. Meigs envisioned a system that would soar above the streetcar traffic clogging Boston’s streets. Beginning in 1884, thousands of people boarded his distinctive cylindrical train cars for 20-mph rides around a test track in East Cambridge, MA. The system was a technical success, and eventually Meigs obtained a charter to build miles of monorail track around Boston. But a fateful attack one winter night in 1887 dashed his hopes—and proved that the best technology isn’t always the one that wins widespread adoption. Featured guest: Charles Sullivan of the Cambridge Historical Commission. Charlie also provided key historical perspective in Soonish 1.09, A Tale of Two Bridges. Check the full version of these reports and individual reports at: https://www.newyorkmarketreports.com   This episode is brought to you by: http://www.theratnerteam.com   Welcome to the Manhattan Multi-Family Sales Real Estate Market Report for the fourth quarter of 2017. Whether you already own or you’re looking to buy into the City’s fastest growing market, we’ll keep you up to date. You’re listening to New York’s Real Estate Market Update from the Ratner Team. Manhattan’s iconic skyline is home to millions, but the Multifamily market is still steadily suffering a decline – both across the borough and across the city. Sales volume this quarter totaled $1.7 billion: a large number in theory, but a shocking 30 percent decline over last year’s Q4. However, there is good news. Square-footage pricing continues to rise, up 29 percent from 2016 to an average of $630. Average selling prices in Manhattan have increased enormously, up 37 percent from last year’s records and coming in at $554,000 across the island. While total transactions have decreased 40 percent, with just 103 sales in the 2017’s fourth quarter, sales are still as lucrative as expected from this vibrant borough. Though Manhattan’s volume market is trending down, the top sales numbers still rival the skyline in height. December’s top sale is located in the Two Bridges neighborhood, where 275 South Street sold for a striking $167,500,000. This magnificent waterfront property commands not only impressive views but also impressive living spaces: 19 newly-renovated floors with modernist appeal and prime access to nightlife, galleries and restaurants. At just $637 per square foot, that sale doesn’t even begin to the average square-footage of these top ten most expensive Manhattan neighborhoods this quarter: Chelsea, home to the High Line elevated park and art galleries galore, tops off the list at an average of $1,802 per square foot. Greenwich Village comes in second at $1,535, with the Upper West Side a close third at $1,225. Lincoln Square listed at $1,020 per square foot, Kips Bay at $1,011, East Village at $983, Lenox Hill at $920, Yorkville at $881, and Manhattan Valley at $843. Tenth but certainly not least, Clinton – Hell’s Kitchen area averaged in at $728 per square foot. Harlem was the neighborhood with the highest volume of multifamily sales in Q4 2017, with 25 total transactions. Both Yorkville and Washington Heights followed close behind, claiming 10 sales each. Bargain-seekers should consider looking in Washington Heights, as the average price per square foot was only $276 at the close of the year despite growing interest and activity in the neighborhood.     - If you like this information, the best way you can support us is with a 5-star rating. Share it with someone you know, and subscribe. Episode 1.09: When Boston’s elegant Longfellow Bridge opened in 1907, it was innovative example of classical European bridge architecture adapted for a busy American city. But over the next century, officials allowed the bridge to rust to the point of near-collapse. And recently, a futuristic new cable-stay bridge, the Zakim Bridge, was built across the Charles River just a mile downstream, displacing the Longfellow as an icon of the city and proving that Bostonians still have a taste for modernity. Now the Longfellow Bridge is being painstakingly restored and recreated, down to the last rivet. But for the price of fixing it, the state could have built at least two Zakim-scale bridges in its place. This week Soonish asks: Why go to all that trouble? When should we preserve the parts of our urban environments that connect us to the past? When should we boldly remodel our cities to support growth and innovation in the future? And how can we balance the two impulses? The Soonish theme is by Graham Gordon Ramsay. Additional music by Tim Beek, timbeek.com. More information about this episode at www.soonishpodcast.org.
