The American Patchwork Quartet is a group that reflects the American melting pot – the patchwork quilt of people who've come and made the U.S.A. their home. APQ features two-time Grammy winner Clay Ross, of the band Ranky Tanky, drummer Clarence Penn, and two musicians who immigrated from Asia: the singer Falu (from India) and bassist Yasushi Nakamura (from Japan). Their debut, untitled album is just out, and includes fresh, often Indian-tinged arrangements of old fiddle tunes, folk hymns, and early blues. As the famed folksong collector and producer Alan Lomax said, “America has a patchwork culture made of the dreams and songs of all its people.” The American Patchwork Quartet performs their take on old folk songs in-studio.  Set list: 1. Wayfaring Stranger 2. Lazy John 3. Shenandoah

Episode 274: Beyond his skills as a guitarist and singer, Clay Ross is what I like to call a Musical Instigator. Since heading to his current base in New York 20 years ago from his home town of Charleston, SC, he's conceived and organized three brilliant groups that bring a new global consciousness to American roots music. First it was Matuto with its infusion of Brazilian melodies and rhythms. Then with old college-era friends from South Carolina he launched Ranky Tanky, a Grammy-winning outfit that reimagines African-American Gullah music for a world stage. His latest project is the American Patchwork Quartet, with members from three continents and a completely original way of updating classic folk songs. We go deep on his background and his approach to making creative space for diverse people to truly collaborate.

Drum roll….it's the first episode of Travel Notes for 2024! I'm so excited about this year's first guest - Clay Ross, a multi-grammy award winning guitarist/vocalist, composer and educator about his group American Patchwork Quartet or APQ. I saw the American Patchwork Quartet perform at the APAP conference in NYC this past January and was absolutely blown away by their live performance and music. This dynamic and virtuosic group binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication, country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornamentation on their debut self titled album which comes out Friday, February 9th. Throughout the album, we find potent symbols of unity in diversity, exploring universal truths through a range of musical languages and cultural lenses - themes like longing, heartbreak, desire, fulfillment, tranquility and love...ultimately revealing the joys, sorrows, and unwavering hope of a nation crafted by shared dreams and diverse histories.

It is a short for the Parramatta Eels but a massive episode for The Tip Sheet. We kick off the show as we go Behind The Mic with Spiro to break down the Easter Monday loss and take a look at all the wild action in the NRL. Sixties and Forty20 are joined by Craig McLaren and Clay Ross from the Greystanes Devils as we dive deep into the lastest Parra Story. Craig and Clay talk about the rich tapestry that is the foundation of the Devils and their incredibly close-knit community. All that is left is news and previews as the boys look to power through both. They take the time though to celebrate a huge milestone for the Parramatta Eels and the Tarsha Gale with the ladies playing their first ever finals footy this week against the Newcastle Knights. The NRL preview gets serious this week as Sixties takes the team to task about their lacking defence. Forty20 tips the team to bounce back in that regard but Sixties is concerned that Newcastle might find similar success across the park as the Tigers did last week.

Santana started his career with the intent to form himself musically through local music scene, such as Maracatu, Coco, Ciranda, Afoxé, Baião, Cavalo Marinho, Candomblé. Claudinho has lived in and visited more than 12 European countries and has been influenced by musicians from African and Asia. These contacts created a desire to learn and better understand the roots of percussion and their cultures beginning with the introduction of the instruments like Talking Drum, Djembe, Udu etc. He enjoys incorporating hand percussion with drum kit and believes that Percussion is “an endless universe”. His experiences at home and abroad have added to Santana's musical vocabulary; he played with the Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante for ten years and he was introduced to the musicians Marcos Suzano and Jorginho do Pandeiro. His primary instrument is the pandeiro, but he also plays djembe, timbal, congas and peruvian Cajon. Claudinho has taught percussion for the last 21 years. He has taught courses and workshops for more than a decade in Brazil and several European countries. In the US he held Pandeiro and Maracatu workshops sponsored by Contemporânea. In Recife, he held body percussion workshops sponsored by TIM Música, Pandeiro workshops sponsored by the Culture Ministry, and many others. Santana was a student of Jorge Martins, his first teacher and founder of “Corpos Percussivos”, where he was also an instructor. He also has held workshops in other Brazilian states, like Aracaju, Maceió and Fortaleza. He was invited as the Brazilian representative to the International Festival of Pandeiro, or NAFDA in the US. Claudinho holds degrees in music from the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and in journalism from Universidade Católica de Pernambuco. In 2008 he received a scholarship to study at West Virginia University, where he studied steel drums, electronic music, sound painting, and African drumming. Santana has played with international names such as the British singer Joss Stone, accordionist Rob Curto and guitar player Clay Ross, both from NY, and the Scottish groups like Bloco Vomit and MacUmba, from UK. In Brazil, Santana has recorded and played with Zeca Baleiro, Junio Barreto, Silvério Pessoa, Geraldo Azevedo, Davi Moraes, Luizinho Calixto, Zé Calixto, Xangai and Santana “O Cantador”. With the singer Badi Assad he performed at Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea and in Rio de Janeiro with Ney Matogrosso. In the last ten years, Claudinho has immersed himself into the São Paulo Carnaval Bloco scene. He had the chance to work along with Bangalafumenga and Kizomba from Rio, Ritaleena, Charanga do França, Besta É Tu and he is currently the musical director for Bloco Pagu.
